Stereolithography (SLA) is an emerging technology in three-dimensional printing that has garnered significant attention in the biomedical field due to its high printing fidelity, good biocompatibility, and high spatial resolution. Polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) is commonly used as a photosensitive printing ink in SLA, and it possesses excellent biocompatibility, photosensitivity, processability, water solubility, and biomechanical tunability. Additionally, PEGDA exhibits unique anti-protein, platelet, and cell adhesion possibilities, making it a promising material for blood contact applications. However, cross-linking PEGDA using chain growth photopolymerization results in a high concentration of reactive functional groups, leading to high print volume shrinkage, decreased precision of the finished product, warping, deformation, and cracking. This study introduces a chemically modified methacryloylated chitosan (CSMA) as a cross-linking agent into the PEGDA ink. This strategy effectively reduces the volume shrinkage of the ink and imparts antimicrobial properties to the final product. The dual anticoagulation properties of PEGDA were achieved by loading divalent copper ion (Cu II ) into the ink, which better addresses the antimicrobial and anticoagulant needs in the physiological environment of blood. The results show that SLA printable inks based on PEGDA/CSMA/Cu II have low swelling, high print fidelity, high stability, and good cell compatibility. Furthermore, by verifying the functionality of PEGDA/CSMA/Cu II , the research shows that the bioprinting ink exhibits excellent antibacterial and anticoagulant properties, making it a promising material candidate for SLA 3D printing of blood purification, central venous catheter, and other semi-implanted blood materials. This study provides new ideas for developing multifunctional photosensitive inks in biomedical engineering.

Bacterial biofilms are the major etiology agent of peri-implant disease. Chemical decontamination is a promising treatment strategy against bacterial biofilms; however, its applications are limited by its low efficiency and poor biocompatibility. In contrast to three conventional cleaners (sterile saline, hydrogen peroxide, and chlorhexidine), this study used resveratrol and naringin solutions to remove mature Staphylococcus aureus and Porphyromonas gingivalis biofilm on sandblasted (with large grit and acid-etched (SLA) titanium surface. To determine changes in surface characteristics, the surface wettability and roughness were measured, and micromorphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy. With crystal violet (CV) and live/dead bacterial staining, residual plaque quantity and composition were measured. The biocompatibility was tested using pH and cytotoxicity, as well as by osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1) adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation, and fibroblasts (L-929) proliferation were also analyzed. It was found that resveratrol and naringin solutions were more effective in restoring surface characteristics and also showed that less plaque and viable bacteria were left. Naringin removed S. aureus biofilms better than chlorhexidine. Alkaline resveratrol and naringin solutions increased cell adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation without any cytotoxicity. Resveratrol increased the expression of mRNA and protein associated with osteogenesis. In conclusion, resveratrol and naringin effectively restored SLA titanium surface characteristics and decontaminated the biofilm with good biocompatibility, suggesting their therapeutic potential as chemical decontaminants.

Objective: The study aims to investigate the biocorrosion behavior of Porphyromonas gingivalis on pure and SLA titanium surfaces and its effects on surface characteristics and osteoblast behavior. Methods: Pure and SLA titanium specimens were immersed in culture medium with P. gingivalis and incubated for 7 days. P. gingivalis colonization on the pure and SLA titanium surfaces was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pure and SLA titanium surface characteristics were analyzed via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), surface roughness and surface wettability. The corrosion behaviors of pure and SLA titanium specimens were evaluated by electrochemical corrosion test. The osteoblast behavior of MC3T3-E1 cells on the pure and SLA titanium surfaces after P. gingivalis colonization was investigated by cell adhesion and western blot assays. Results: P. gingivalis colonized on the pure and SLA titanium surfaces was observed by SEM. The XPS analysis demonstrated reductions in the relative levels of titanium and oxygen and obvious reductions of dominant titanium dioxide (TiO2) on both titanium surfaces after immersing the metal in P. gingivalis culture. In addition, their roughness and wettability were changed. Correspondingly, the electrochemical corrosion test results revealed significant decreases in the corrosion resistance and increases in the corrosion rate of the pure and SLA titanium specimens after immersion in P. gingivalis culture. The results of the in vitro study showed that the pre-corroded pure and SLA titanium surfaces by P. gingivalis exhibited lower osteocompatibility and down-regulated the adhesion, spreading and osteogenic differentiation abilities of MC3T3-E1 cells. Conclusions: P. gingivalis was able to colonize on the pure and SLA titanium surfaces and weaken their surface properties, especially a decrease in the protective TiO2 film, which induced the biocorrosion and further negatively affected the osteoblast behavior.

An ideal biomimetic periosteum should have excellent biocompatibility to promote osteoclast adhesion and improve osseointegration, which is significant in promoting bone regeneration. In this work, a bionic artificial periosteum printed by the SLA-3D printing was prepared, consisting of a poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA)/chitosan/tricalcium phosphate (TCP) fibrous layer and a gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)/ammonium molybdate (Mo) cambium layer. Distinct surface characteristics were achieved on both sides of the biomimetic periosteum. Among them, the fibrous layer has high mechanical properties and low porosity, which is conducive to preventing the pulling of muscle tissues and the invasion of soft tissues. The cambium layer has a porous structure and bioactive factors that can effectively promote osteogenic differentiation of preosteoblasts. Combined with mild photothermal therapy triggered by NIR light, the biomimetic periosteum could promote bone regeneration at both the chemical and physical levels. This 3D-printed bilayer hydrogel can provide a promising strategy for preparing advanced tissue-engineered periosteum with excellent physical and bone regeneration properties.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is among the rapidly evolving technologies with applications in many sectors. The pharmaceutical industry is no exception, and the approval of the first 3D-printed tablet (Spiratam®) marked a revolution in the field. Several studies reported the fabrication of different dosage forms using a range of 3D printing techniques. Thermosensitive drugs compose a considerable segment of available medications in the market requiring strict temperature control during processing to ensure their efficacy and safety. Heating involved in some of the 3D printing technologies raises concerns regarding the feasibility of the techniques for printing thermolabile drugs. Studies reported that semi-solid extrusion (SSE) is the commonly used printing technique to fabricate thermosensitive drugs. Digital light processing (DLP), binder jetting (BJ), and stereolithography (SLA) can also be used for the fabrication of thermosensitive drugs as they do not involve heating elements. Nonetheless, degradation of some drugs by light source used in the techniques was reported. Interestingly, fused deposition modelling (FDM) coupled with filling techniques offered protection against thermal degradation. Concepts such as selection of low melting point polymers, adjustment of printing parameters, and coupling of more than one printing technique were exploited in printing thermosensitive drugs. This systematic review presents challenges, 3DP procedures, and future directions of 3D printing of thermo-sensitive formulations.Keywords:3D printing;thermolabile;thermosensitive;FDM;SSE;SLA;DLP

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology, specifically stereolithography (SLA) technology, has recently created exciting possibilities for the design and fabrication of sophisticated dosages for oral administration, paving a practical way to precisely manufacture customized pharmaceutical dosages with both personalized properties and sustained drug release behavior. However, the sustained drug release achieved in prior studies largely relies on the presence of hydrophilic excipients in the printing formulation, which unfortunately impedes the printability and formability of the corresponding printing formulations. The current study developed and prepared mini-sized oral pellets using the SLA technique and successfully accomplished a hydrophilic excipient-independent drug release behavior. With ibuprofen as the model drug, the customized photopolymerizable printing formulation included polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) as a monomer and diphenyl (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phosphine oxide (TPO) as a photoinitiator. The produced mini-sized pellets were thoroughly investigated for various factors, including their printability, physical properties, microscopic features, drug content, and drug-release profiles. The drug release profiles from the printed pellets that were larger size (3 mm and 6 mm) followed the Ritger–Peppas model, demonstrating that the release was influenced by both the diffusion of the dissolved drug and by the erosion of the hydrophilic excipients (PEG400). The profiles from the smaller printed pellets (1 mm and 2 mm) followed first release kinetics, not only illustrating that the release was impacted only by drug diffusion, but also indicating that there is a size boundary between the dependent and independent hydrophilic excipients. These results could create practical benefits to the pharmaceutical industry in terms of the design and development personalized dosages using the SLA printing technique with controllable drug release by manipulating size alone.Keywords:stereolithography;three-dimensional printing;3D printed oral dosage forms;mini-sized pellets;modified release

Balancing osteogenic activity and antibacterial efficacy on commercially pure titanium implant surfaces remains a significant challenge. In this study, a strontium-copper composite coating (SLA-Sr-Cu) was developed on sandblasted, large-grit, acid-etched (SLA) titanium surfaces via hydrothermal treatment and polydopamine-assisted deposition. XPS confirmed the successful incorporation of Sr and Cu as evidenced by characteristic Sr3d and Cu2p signals. ICP-OES verified controlled, sustained release of Sr 2+ and Cu 2+ . Surface characterization further showed favorable hydrophilicity and appropriate roughness. In vitro evaluations demonstrated that the SLA-Sr-Cu surface maintained rBMSCs adhesion and viability and significantly enhanced osteogenic differentiation, substantiated by increased ALP activity, upregulated expression of osteogenic genes ( ALP, Col-1, OPN ), and elevated extracellular matrix mineralization. Furthermore, the coating exhibited potent antibacterial properties attributable to Cu 2+ release, achieving inhibition rate over 40% for Staphylococcus aureus and inhibition rate over 80% for Porphyromonas gingivalis , and effectively suppressing initial bacterial adhesion and metabolic activity. Collectively, these findings highlight the merit of Sr-Cu co-modification for concurrent promotion of osteogenesis and antibacterial activity, offering a viable strategy for multifunctional dental implant surfaces.

Organically modified nanofillers, including nano SiO 2 , montmorillonite and attapulgite were loaded to stereolithography resin (SLR). The surface of nanofillers were modified using organic modifier of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (γ-MPS) and (1-hexadecyl)dimethyl allyl ammonium chloride (C 16 -DMAAC), and were characterized by FTIR and small angle XRD analysis. The morphology of nanocomposites were observed by TEM. Viscosity and curing speed of SLR nanocomposites at increasing nanofillers loading were also studied. The mechanical properties of printed samples fabricated by a home-made stereolithography apparatus (SLA) 3D printer were tested. The influence of nanoparticles on the accuracy was measured and discussed. It was found that addition of 5% w/w of nano SiO 2 increased the tensile strength and modulus by 20.6% and 65.1% respectively, and the printed accuracy was not significantly influenced. This study opens the way to the application of nanocomposites in the desktop level SLA 3D printing .

Stereolithography (SLA) has been regarded as the most promising rapid prototype (RP) production method for ceramic parts recently because of its better precision in size and site control. The rheological behavior and curing behavior of suspensions are controlling factors for ceramic stereolithography. In this work, oleic acid (OA), stearic acid (SA) and Poly(Acrylate Ammonium) (PAA-NH 4 ) were studied as the surfactant for HDDA-based suspension formulation. Modified alumina particles exhibit different wettability with HDDA monomer and thus the different rheology behavior and stability between the formulated suspensions. OA shows the best performance among all three dispersants . 40 vol% alumina suspensions with a viscosity ˂3 Pa s at 30 s −1 shear rate were successfully formulated with OA and SA. A sintering density of 95% can be reached for the OA- and SA-modified alumina UV-curable resins.

Improving the sustainability and processability of shape memory composites is key to expanding their applications. This work introduces a novel bio-based shape memory composite resin with renewable cellulose nanocrystals, suitable for stereolithography (SLA) printing. We prepared epoxy soybean oil-based composites by incorporating Itaconic acid monomethyl ester (IAME) modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs-IAME) into IAME modified epoxy soybean oil (IESO). The CNCs-IAME/IESO composite resin, with a viscosity of 1.01–1.22 Pa•s, is ideal for SLA printing. Adding 0.75 wt% CNCs-IAME particles enhances mechanical properties, yielding a tensile strength of 19.54 MPa and elongation at a break of 34.03%. Demonstrated applications include flexible supports and temperature-responsive sensors. This innovative composite offers excellent sustainability and SLA-printability, showing great potential for new bio-based heat-activated shape memory materials.

Stereolithography (SLA) is highly valued in high-end manufacturing for its exceptional design flexibility. However, the inherent flammability of photosensitive resins significantly limits their safe application. This study designed and synthesized an intrinsically flame-retardant photosensitive resin (TPH) containing phosphorus and sulfur elements. The TPH resin was blended with a phosphorus-containing reactive diluent and an ionic liquid (TFS) to prepare a photosensitive resin (TPHP) suitable for SLA technology. An innovative approach was employed where macroscopic pore structures were constructed through 3D printing, and due to phase separation between the ionic liquid and the 3D-printed samples, microscopic pores were incorporated within the SLA-printed specimens, a porous framework was formed. These pores served as reaction sites for in-situ growth of a nano-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) layer on the surface. Thermogravimetric and flame retardancy tests demonstrated that the incorporation of α-ZrP significantly enhanced the material's thermal stability, flame retardancy, and smoke suppression properties. Compared with unmodified samples, the char residue was increased to 47.3%, the limiting oxygen index reached 29.0%, and the UL-94 rating achieved V-0. Cone calorimetry tests showed reductions in peak heat release rate, total heat release, and total smoke production by 42.1%, 65.4%, and 75.1%, respectively. The results indicate that this work provides a new strategy for flame-retardant 3D printing. It resolves the intrinsic conflict between flame retardancy and printability by combining surface pore engineering with in situ growth to achieve surface functionalization without sacrificing printability.

Conventional forming methods for MgAl 2 O 4 (MAS) ceramics struggle to fabricate complex geometries and face the inherent trade-off between densification and grain growth, while SLA-printed MAS have rarely matched the mechanical properties of their conventionally sintered counterparts. This work proposes an integrated strategy that combines stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing, pressureless sintering, and Y 2 O 3 -induced in-situ Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (YAG) phase formation. Unlike conventional doping studies, we systematically quantified the grain-boundary pinning effect using the Smith–Zener model. As the Y 2 O 3 content increased from 2 to 10 wt%, the YAG content correspondingly rose from 3.3 to 18.0 wt%, and the theoretically predicted limiting grain size of MAS first decreased from 48.09 to 8.04 μm, and then increased to 11.81 μm. The variation trend shows good consistency with the experimentally observed grain size evolution. At an optimal Y 2 O 3 content of 4 wt%, the ceramic achieved a high densification (apparent porosity 0.17%, bulk density 3.48 g cm -3 ), a flexural strength of 256.49 MPa, and a critical thermal shock temperature (ΔT c ) of 214.94 °C. The synergy between SLA and in-situ YAG pinning enables the fabrication of complex-shaped, high-strength, thermally stable MAS components, offering new insights for the development of high-performance engineering ceramics.
