To mitigate the attachment of fouling organisms , Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surfaces (SLIPS) hold tremendous potential as a green and broad-spectrum antifouling solution, capable of replacing traditional antifouling coatings. However, the complexity of current preparation methods and the limited lifespan of lubricating oils constrain their widespread application in marine antifouling for vessels. In this study, melamine sponge (MS) was used as a substrate, and modifications were made by introducing superhydrophobic silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 NPs), a biocompatible adhesive (ethyl cyanoacrylate, ECA), and a highly stretchable polymer (poly-ε-caprolactone, PCL). By combining natural surface microstructures with additional nanomaterials , we successfully obtained a superoleophilic surface, effectively capturing liquid lubricants and maintaining their long-term stability. The sponge substrate possesses distinctive contractility, with the lubricant stored in the grid spontaneously compensating for the loss of surface lubricant, thereby effectively enhancing its durability. This study provides a straightforward fabrication method with reduced manufacturing costs for environmentally friendly marine anti-fouling coatings. The approach demonstrates a prolonged cyclic anti-fouling effect, effectively advancing the development of SLIPS for anti-fouling applications in shallow marine environments.

Slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) hold great promise in fields requiring adhesion resistance such as self-cleaning, anti-fouling, anti-icing, and anti-scaling. However, their road to practical application is still blocked by the complicated fabrication process and the restricted coating area. To address these challenges, we propose a new concept of endogenous SLIPS in which the porous structure grows from the solution coating of polypropylene/caprylyl methicone undergoing a thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) process. Caprylyl methicone serves as the diluent during TIPS as well as the lubricant in the SLIPS so that the coating can be fabricated in one step and unrestrictedly. The dissolution and phase separation mechanisms have been revealed by molecular dynamic simulation and in situ microscopic observation. Such SLIPSs exhibit impressive sliding property even for sticky and viscous liquids and exhibit extremely low ice adhesion in anti-icing tests.

Marine biofouling constitutes a pervasive biological threat that seriously impedes the sustainable development of the marine economy. Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) were typically employed as marine coatings to mitigate biofouling. However, SLIPS are often hindered by rapid lubricant leaching, short service life, and a simple antifouling strategy, thereby limiting their applicability in marine environments. To circumvent the limitations of conventional SLIPS, synergistic antifouling strategies were frequently adopted. In this study, we developed a copper/graphene nanofluid-infused porous surface (Cu/G@uPDMS-oil) utilizing the breath figure method. The nanofluid can be firmly locked into the microstructure within polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to form a stable lubricating layer and provide a sustained release of silicone oil due to dynamic hydrogen bonding. In addition, when silicone oil is released from the coating surface, the intrinsic copper (Cu) and graphene (G) nanoparticles come into substantial contact with the surrounding solution, leading to galvanic corrosion. Galvanic corrosion produces synergistic antifouling through a dual mechanism of induced oxidative stress and copper ion (Cu2+) release. Consequently, the resulting coating exhibits high stability, continuous silicone oil leaching, and self-replenishing properties. Due to the labyrinth effect of graphene, the release rate of Cu2+ is significantly diminished to 6.2 μg·cm–2·day–1. Furthermore, this nanofluid-based smooth surface demonstrates superior antibacterial, anti-algal, and anti-conch properties. The developed Cu/G@uPDMS-oil coating holds great potential for significantly mitigating marine biofouling.

SLIPS with biomimetic grid microstructures were successfully fabricated on aluminum alloys. • The as-prepared surfaces exhibit remarkable slipperiness and robust structural stability. • The proposed method is applicable for functional treatment of metallic alloy surfaces. As a typical engineering metal material, the research on surface protection methods of aluminum alloy has attracted much attention. Inspired by the slippery interface of Nepenthes pitcher plants, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have been developed for engineering metal protection. However, traditional SLIPS generally have problems such as poor durability and easy loss of lubricants, which seriously restrict their practical applications. To solve above problem, we proposed a SLIPS with biomimetic grid microstructures (SBGM) that inspired by microstructure of the Tirumala limniace, which was obtained through multiple laser processing to fabricate grid microstructures. The SBGM exhibited good self-cleaning and anti-fouling performance. Sandpaper abrasion, tape peeling, lubricant retention, and natural environment storage tests demonstrated that the SBGM retained its slippery functionality under the tested conditions. The electrochemical corrosion test showed that the corrosion current density of SBGM was approximately 58.3% lower than that of Bare Al, indicating improved corrosion resistance. At -10 °C± 1 °C, the delayed freezing time of SBGM was 3.5 times that of the Bare Al. SBGM exhibits good lubricant retention and durability, together with improved corrosion protection and anti-icing performance, indicating its potential for engineering metal surface protection. Smart slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have aroused remarkable attention owing to tremendous application foreground in biomedical instruments and industry. However, challenges still remain in fabricating durable SLIPSs. In this work, a fast and highly efficient self-repairing slippery surface (SPU-60M) was fabricated based on a polyurethane membrane and silicone oil. By introducing a great quantity of reversible disulfide bonds into the polymer backbone and hydrogen bonds in the polymer interchain, this SLIPS material could be quickly repaired in 15 min with 97.8% healing efficiency. Moreover, the self-healing efficiency could be maintained at 42.75% after the 10th cutting–healing cycle. Notably, SPU-60M showed excellent self-repairing ability not only in an ambient environment but also in an underwater environment and at ultralow temperatures. Besides, the icing delay time (DT) of SPU-60M could be prolonged to 1182 s at −15 °C, and the ice adhesion strength was only 10.33 kPa at −30 °C. In addition, SPU-60M had excellent anti-fouling performance with BSA adsorption of 2.41 μg/cm2 and Escherichia coli CFU counts of 41 × 104. These findings provide a facile way to design highly efficient self-repairing SLIPSs with multifunctionality.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) with anti-icing properties are challenged by the lubricant loss. Many strategies (such as structure optimization, lubricant improvement) are used to retain the lubricant in the porous structure. However, the matching of modifier and lubricant is rarely studied, which is another key factor for durable anti-icing performance of lubricated surfaces. Herein, proper matching of different lubricants and modifiers were investigated. Perfluoropolyether oil (PFPE) and silicone oil (SO) are chosen as lubricants. Linear alkane (OTS) and fluorinated alkane (FAS) are chosen as modifiers. A series of SLIPSs were prepared by infusing lubricants into unmodified and modified anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) surfaces. The suitable matches (OTS with SO, FAS with PFPE) make the prepared SLIPS have high water mobility and enable high affinity between the lubricant and modified AAO surface. The former contributes to improving the anti-icing performance in the simulated glaze icing test, and the latter is beneficial to improving the durability during the icing/deicing cycles. This work provides useful information to determine the suitable pairs of lubricant-modifier for durable anti-icing lubricated surfaces.

A slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) was developed, based on MgAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH), in order to improve the corrosion and wear resistance of AZ31 Mg alloys. In particular, different concentrations of SiO 2 nanoparticles were incorporated into the silicone oil to further ameliorate the performances of Mg alloys, which can effectively seal the nanopores constructed by MgAl-LDH. With increasing SiO 2 nanoparticle concentration, the nanosheet microstructure of MgAl-LDH was gradually covered by the hierarchical structure of SiO 2 nanoparticles. The formed composite SiO 2 -SLIPSs exhibited good surface hydrophobicity and superior corrosion and wear resistance. When the concentration of SiO 2 nanoparticle was 10 mg mL −1 , the composite SLIPS showed the best performances, with the lowest corrosion current density of 2.43 × 10 -10 A cm −2 and wear volume of 0.041 mm 3 . The developed composite SLIPSs could find wide applications in effective corrosion and wear protection of Mg alloys in industry.

Biomimetic slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have emerged as a promising solution to solve the limitations of superhydrophobic surfaces, such as inadequate durability in corrosion protection and a propensity for frosting. However, the challenge of ensuring strong, lasting adhesion on diverse materials to enhance the durability of the lubricant layer remains. The research addresses this by leveraging amyloid phase-transitioned lysozyme (PTL) as an adhesive interlayer, conferring stable attachment of SLIPS across a variety of substrates, including metals, inorganics, and polymers. The silica-textured interface robustly secures the lubricant with a notably low sliding angle of 1.15°. PTL-mediated adhesion fortifies the silicone oil attachment to the substrate, ensuring the retention of its repellent efficacy amidst mechanical stressors like ultrasonication, water scrubbing, and centrifugation. The integration of robust adhesion, cross-substrate compatibility, and durability under stress affords the PTL-modified SLIPS exceptional anti-fouling, anti-icing, and anti-corrosion properties, marking it as a leading solution for advanced protective applications.

Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) accelerates the corrosion and degradation of metal materials due to the settlement of microorganisms on the surface. However, environmentally friendly and efficient methods to fabricate antifouling and anticorrosion surfaces are still lacking. Inspired by Nepenthes, a slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) has been proven to be an efficient way to inhibit settlement of microorganisms on the metal surface and the following MIC due to the existence of a mobile defect-free lubricant layer. However, the stability of the lubricant layer and substrate of the SLIPS prevented its long-term antifouling and anticorrosion application. Herein, a highly stable slippery organogel was fabricated by depositing a homogeneous mixture of PDMS (base and curing agent), silicone oil, triethoxyvinylsilane, and SiO2 on Q235 and curing in an oven. Triethoxyvinylsilane was not only able to cross-link with the curing agent of PDMS through hydrosilylation but also able to interlink the organogel and Q235 through condensation between the −OH of the metal surface and hydrolyzed siloxane. As a result, the adhesion force between the organogel without triethoxyvinylsilane and the substrate (0.45 MPa) increased to 1.50 MPa for the organogel with triethoxyvinylsilane and SiO2. Also, the tensile strength of the organogel without SiO2 (0.97 MPa) increased to 3.88 MPa for the organogel with 2 wt % SiO2 because of the high elastic modulus of SiO2, which was important to improving its stability under external force. In addition, the organogel showed stable oil distribution and slippery performance after spinning at 4000 rpm for 30 s. Then, the bacterial settlement demonstrated that the organogel could effectively inhibit Pseudoalteromonas sp. settlement on the substrate under both static and dynamic conditions. Finally, an electrochemical test indicated that the MIC could be effectively mitigated by the organogel. This study provides an efficient method to fabricate a highly stable slippery surface on a metal surface for its potential application in mitigating MIC.

We present a citrus-peel-like micro-cavity structure for the design of durable Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surfaces (SLIPSs). Owing to the re-entrant and enclosed nature of micro-cavity, lubricant oils can be stabilized by mitigating mass loss resulting from liquid displacement and shear drainage, respectively. Citrus-peel-like micro-cavity SLIPS displays two orders of magnitude enhancement in durability in the droplet-sliding test when compared with micro-pillar SLIPS and smooth lubricant surface. We demonstrated precise droplet manipulation without liquid loss and cross-contamination by harnessing the Marangoni effect with photo-thermal control. Cavity-smooth SLIPS with large adhesion contrast was patterned to initiate multiple droplet coalescences for on-demand neutralization reaction. The citrus-peel-like micro-cavity SLIPS would be beneficial to various applications, such as multi-step chemical reactions and bio-detections that require loss-free, contamination-free, and programmable droplet manipulation.

Zinc and its alloys are valuable crucial materials applied in the fields of automobile, ship manufacturing and construction industries. However, their application is limited due to poor performance on water-resistance, condensation and anti-icing property. Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) has been widely used owing to excellent water-repellent, condensation and anti-icing properties. In this work, a SLIPS was fabricated based on zinc substrate by using electrochemical etching, low surface energy modification and lubricant infusion, successively. According to the SEM morphologies and EDS images, it could be confirmed that the rough porous surface structure, low surface energy modification and infused lubricants are key factors accounting for the excellent anti-wetting property of fabricated slippery Zn surface. The experimental results showed that the SLIPS on zinc substrate exhibited outstanding water-repellent performance at a wide range of temperature and drop impact velocity. Moreover, its anti-wetting ability can be sustained even under the impacts of droplets or the continuous water jet. Owing to its dropwise condensation strategy, the SLIPS shows reasonable water collection efficiency, which exceeds 60 mg/(cm 2 ·h) at relative humidity of 90%. The excellent anti-icing property is demonstrated by the simulated ice rain test and deicing force test. And the results showed that only tiny residue ice left on the SLIPS and the deicing force was 2–3 times smaller than ordinary surface. The prepared SLIPS is expected to be an adaptable and efficient method for enhancing the water-repellent, condensation and anti-icing properties of zinc substrate, and may expand the application in energy-efficient fluid handing & transportation, medicine and anti-fouling operating in low temperature environment.

Inspired by Nepenthes pitcher plants, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have recently attracted increasing attention for directional transport and movement manipulation of water droplets. Nevertheless, infused lubricants are generally instable and easy to deviate from such surfaces during applications, resulting in the lost control on the fog capture and motion of droplets as well as serious risk of water safety. Here, a highly stable SLIPS with improved lubricant storage is developed through the structure design of synergistically constructing regular micro-pincushion and nanoparticles. Notably, on the basis of the microstructure, the presence of nano-architecture shows great contribution to obviously increased capillary force as well as suppressed lubricant loss during water collection. Featuring the stable surface-slippery property, the biomimetic SLIPS displays well maintained dropwise coalescence of water from fog and efficient water harvesting performance. The water collection efficiency is as high as 852 mg cm–2 h–1 and is stable within continuous 20 h application. This fundamental illustration of structural synergism can be further applied to construct more new water manipulation and harvesting platforms with stably slippery surfaces/interfaces.
