Promotional effect of phosphorus addition on improving the SO2 resistance of V2O5-MoO3/TiO2 catalyst for NH3-SCR of NO

Li Huang,Yiqing Zeng,Yibo Gao,Hu Wang,Yuhao Zong,Zhengfeng Chang,Shule Zhang,Pei Han,Yang Yu

The oxidation of SO 2 into SO 3 promote the formation of NH 4 HSO 4 (ABS), which can cover surface active sites catalyst, and then leading to the decrease of NH 3 -SCR De-NO x activity. In this work, phosphorus species were loaded on the V 2 O 5 -MoO 3 /TiO 2 De-NO x catalyst to enhance its SO 2 resistance via inhibiting the SO 2 /SO 3 conversion. XRD and N 2 -adsorption results showed that phosphorus has little impact on the structure and pore property of the catalyst. The results of XPS , H 2 -TPR, and NH 3 -TPD analyses illustrated that suitable amount of phosphorus (1%) increases the content of polymeric vanadate and chemisorbed oxygen (O α ) of the catalyst, which is benefit to the SCR process. Phosphorus species decreases the SO 2 absorbability and SO 2 oxidation activity of V-Mo-P/Ti catalysts, thus it exhibits higher NH 3 -SCR activity than that of the P-free catalyst at presence of SO 2 due to the lower SO 2 /SO 3 conversion and fewer amount of NH 4 HSO 4 deposition.

Study on competitive absorption of SO3 and SO2 by calcium hydroxide

Kejia He,Qiang Song,Zhennan Yan,Na Zheng,Qiang Yao

Alkaline injection is an effective way to control the emission of high concentration SO 3 caused by the use of high-sulfur coal and selective catalytic reduction (SCR), but its performance is affected by the competitive absorption of SO 2 . A fixed-bed reactor was used to study the competitive absorption of SO 3 and SO 2 by Ca(OH) 2 . The dynamic absorption curves in different atmospheres were obtained, the intermediate products were characterized, and the competitive absorption mechanism was discussed. The absorption of SO 3 and SO 2 consists of the chemical kinetics-controlled and product layer diffusion-controlled stages. In the chemical kinetics-controlled stage, the SO 3 and SO 2 removal efficiencies were around 90% and 55% at first and then decreased; the SO 3 selectivity was around 0.1 at first and then increased. In the product layer diffusion-controlled stage, the SO 3 removal efficiency gradually decreased but kept greater than 10%, while the SO 2 removal efficiency deceased to zero; the SO 3 selectivity continued to increase and reached 0.31 at most when SO 2 absorption ceased. There existed significant competition between SO 3 and SO 2 absorption. The increasing SO 3 concentration promoted the SO 3 absorption and the increasing SO 2 concentration decreased it. The absorption of SO 3 increased the intensity of the SO 4 2 - SO42- band, decrease the intensity of the SO 3 2 - SO32- band, and made the product layer more compact. The possibility of SO 3 reacting with the components (CaSO 3 , CaSO 4 and CaCO 3 ) on the reacted Ca(OH) 2 surface was analyzed. Ionic diffusion was proposed as the main mechanism of the continuous SO 3 absorption after the formation of a dense product layer.

Efficient and Prioritized Lithium Recovery from Spent Li(Ni0.5Co0.2Mn0.3)O2 Cathodes via SO2 Treatment

Zejia Wu,Jiashu Yuan,Hui Wang,Zaifa Pan,Jie Gao,Yonggao Xia

With the wide application of ternary lithium-ion batteries, the increased usage of batteries has resulted in a corresponding rise in the amount of discarded batteries. Here, we propose an efficient and prioritized lithium extraction process with a low environmental impact for the recovery of valuable metal components from spent LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cathode materials. SO2 calcination–water leaching was used to recover Li, while H2SO4 acid leaching facilitated the recovery of Ni, Co, and Mn, yielding a precursor solution for the treatment of discarded NCM batteries. The effects of calcination temperature, calcination time, water leaching time, water leaching liquid–solid ratio, different battery ratios, acid leaching time, acid leaching liquid–solid ratio, and acid leaching temperature were optimized. The acid leaching process was controlled by surface chemical reactions through kinetic analysis. Under optimal conditions, Li was converted to soluble Li2SO4, achieving an impressive leaching rate of 99.7%. Ni, CO, and Mn were converted to their respective oxides. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the formation of Li2Mn(SO4)2 from Mn with Li during calcination enhances the leaching efficiency across different battery composition ratios. The activation energies of Ni, Co, and Mn during the acid leaching process were determined by kinetic calculations, yielding values of 130.19, 133.05, and 134.09 kJ mol–1, respectively. This study provides a novel method for recycling spent NCM cathode materials.

SO2-resistant hollow carbon spheres encapsulated Pt nanoparticles for benzene oxidation

Jiaqi Wu,Jian Tian,Weijian Zhou,Siyu Liu,Daohua Sun

In the catalytic combustion of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using noble metal catalysts, resistance to SO 2 poisoning poses a significant challenge. To tackle this problem, Pt nanoparticle catalysts encapsulated in hollow carbon spheres (Pt@HCS catalysts) are synthesized. The Pt@HCS catalyst exhibits excellent benzene conversion, achieving 100 % conversion at 165 °C under an air velocity of 20,000 mL/(g h). Compared to the conventional supported Pt/HCS catalyst, the Pt@HCS catalyst demonstrates a significantly improved resistance to SO 2 poisoning. In the presence of 25 ppm SO 2 , the Pt@HCS catalyst is capable of maintaining a 100 % benzene conversion rate within 24 h, whereas the conversion rate of Pt/HCS drops substantially to approximately 52 %. It is confirmed that the hollow porous structure provided a larger specific surface area and more adsorption sites, thereby facilitating benzene oxidation. More importantly, in situ DRIFTS reveals that the adsorption and desorption processes of SO 2 , along with the generation of substances like SO 3 2− , are strictly limited to the surface of the carbon shell, thereby preserving the integrity of the internal reaction environment. Multiple characterizations combined with density functional theory (DFT) have demonstrated a unique separation effect over Pt@HCS, whereby the hydroxyl groups on the carbon shell preferentially capture SO 2 while allowing benzene molecules to enter the cavities of the catalyst. In this way, any internal ingress of SO 2 and competition with benzene for Pt adsorption is effectively avoided. This study offers a potential solution to enhance the performance of noble metal catalysts in the presence of sulfur compounds.

Mesoporous carbon spheres loading with ionic liquids for adsorption of low-concentration SO2

Ying Zeng,Xinlu Li

Biomass-activated carbon is generally used in ultra-clean rooms to remove sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) molecular impurities. However, its high air resistance and excessive chemical residues needs resolution. In this study, we have developed millimeter-sized mesoporous carbon beads (MCBs) using a silica sol and reverse-phase suspension polymerization. The microstructure of MCBs was characterized by various techniques, including X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The MCBs were categorized into three distinct groups based on particle size and were loaded with tetramethyl guanidine lactate (TMGL) or 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate   ([EMIM][OAc]), respectively. It was found that the MCBs exhibit a perfect spherical shape, smooth surface, high strength, and effectively reduce air resistance. Notably, the MCBs loaded with [EMIM][OAc] demonstrated a remarkable SO 2 adsorption capacity of up to 36.7 mg/ml, and the feasibility to remove SO 2 as a new absorption material for ultra-clean room.

Two-Step Treatment of Corn Cob in H2O–SO2 System

Jiahe Yan,Yucui Hou,Shuhang Ren,Muge Niu,Weize Wu

Because of its controllable and recoverable properties, the H2O–SO2 system was studied as a reaction medium to hydrolyze corn cob to produce chemicals by a two-step treatment. The results indicated that, after the first-step treatment of corn cob, 27.0% xylose, 3.3% glucose, and 3.2% arabinose could be obtained at 140 °C for 1.5 h with 0.024 g/cm3 SO2; after the second-step treatment, 8.6% glucose could be obtained at 190 °C for 0.5 h with 0.048 g/cm3 SO2. The total yield of products by the two-step treatment of corn cob was 48.4%, which was greater than that obtained by the one-step treatment, 32.4% at 190 °C for 0.5 h with 0.048 g/cm3 SO2. Furthermore, the degradation products obtained from the two-step treatment were less than those obtained from the one-step treatment. More importantly, after the reaction, SO2 could be swept by stream stripping and reused.

Efficient SO2 Capture by 2-(Diethylamino)ethanol/Hexadecane Phase Separation Absorbent

Xuefei Li,Dong Feng,Muyuan Chai,Shengchao Xu,Ammar Mohammedomar,Wenbo Zhao

Removal of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from flue gas by developing a highly efficient phase-change absorption solution is an effective way to tackle increasingly serious air pollution problems. In this study, the phase-change absorption behaviors of SO2 by using low cost 2-(diethylamino)ethanol (DEEA)/hexadecane as absorbent/solvent was systematically studied. The homogeneous solution could be facilely and quickly changed into two immiscible liquid phases upon introducing low partial pressure SO2. The liquid–liquid phase-change phenomenon was attributed to the formation of zwitterionic product by the reaction of DEEA with SO2, which was insoluble in low polarity hexadecane. Specifically, the absorption capacity of DEEA toward SO2 under 20 °C could reach 0.51 and 1.56 g of SO2/g of DEEA at 0.02 and 1 atm, respectively, which exhibited front-rank absorption capacity to most reported works. In addition, it was suggested that the present absorbent exhibited a highly selective absorption property and high removal efficiency of SO2. The well-matched absorbent/solvent phase-change system holds a promising application in the treatment of industrial flue gases.

NH3 Weakens the Enhancing Effect of SO2 on Biogenic Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation

Lin Du,Li Xu,Kun Li,Christian George,Maofa Ge

Anthropogenic air pollutants can be involved in biogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. However, such interactions are currently one of the least understood aspects of atmospheric chemistry. Herein, SOA formation via chemical interactions between anthropogenic SO2, NH3, and O3 and biogenic β-caryophyllene was investigated. It is shown that although SO2 considerably enhanced SOA formation, this enhancing effect was weakened by NH3 when SO2 and NH3 coexisted. NH3-induced neutralization of particle acidity generated by SO2 oxidation may be the primary driving factor of this weakening effect. Molecular-level characterization using high-resolution quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry revealed additional connections between NH3-induced changes in SOA composition and aerosol acidity. Specifically, the lower relative abundances of several main products generated in the presence of SO2 and NH3 than those formed in the presence of only SO2 were consistent with their suppressed formation by lower seed acidity. The suppression of oligomer formation by NH3 provided more evidence for the weakening of acid-catalyzed processes caused by acidity neutralization. Accordingly, the current study demonstrates that NH3 as a less effectively regulated alkaline gas resulting from an unbalanced reduction of different pollutants must be considered with caution when evaluating effects of SO2 on SOA formation via anthropogenic–biogenic interactions.

Preparation of ZnFe2O4/AC composite and its adsorption behaviour for SO2

Huiqiang Wang,Minghua Liu,Xin Luo,Yifan Liu,Shuna Hou,Yuancai Lv

ZnFe2O4/AC composites were prepared by a one-pot hydro-thermal method using the activated carbon as a carrier. The structural, textural and surface properties of the adsorbent have been comprehensively characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, physical adsorption instrument (BET) and TG-DSC analysis. The removal capacities of the composites were investigated via testing the adsorption capacity at the self-made desulfurization equipment. The process of adsorption for SO2 was analysed by kinetic model and thermodynamic model. The results show that the adsorption capacity of ZnFe2O4/AC composites adsorption kinetics process was conformity with the first kinetics mode1. The adsorption process was in accordance to the Langmuir and Freundlich equation. Additionally, the whole process belonged to spontaneous and exothermic reaction.

Solubility and thermodynamic properties of SO2 in three low volatile urea derivatives

Yaotai Jiang,Xiaobang Liu,Dongshun Deng

The solubilities of SO 2 in three dipolar aprotic urea diversities, 1,1,3,3-tetramethylurea (TMU), 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone (DMI), and 1,3-dimethyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2 (1H)-pyrimidinone (DMPU) was measured at temperatures ranging from (293.15 to 323.15)   K and pressure up to 120   kPa. By correlating the solubility results with a reaction equilibrium thermodynamic model (RETM), Henry’s constants ( H m ), reaction equilibrium constants ( K °), and enthalpy (Δ H r ) in the absorption process were obtained. The results indicate that the three solvents exhibit both strong physical and weak chemical interactions with SO 2 . Further comparison of the capture performance with ILs, deep eutectic solvents (DESs), and several organic solvents, DMI, DMPU and TMU are noted to be excellent absorbents for acidic SO 2 .

Enhance SO2 adsorption performance of biochar modified by CO2 activation and amine impregnation

Jingai Shao,Junjie Zhang,Xiong Zhang,Ye Feng,Han Zhang,Shihong Zhang,Hanping Chen

To enhance the SO 2 adsorption of biochar, CO 2 activation and impregnation with methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) was simultaneously employed to improve its physicochemical characteristics. Furthermore, the effects of the pore structure and nitrogen functionality on SO 2 adsorption were also explored. The results show that after CO 2 activation, the specific surface area of biochar increased from 56.91 m 2 /g to 755.35 m 2 /g, while this figure dropped to 25.54 m 2 /g or even lower after impregnation with MDEA. Although the pore structure of activated biochar was destroyed, the surface nitrogen content of the nitrogen-enriched biochar (with 10% MDEA impregnation) increased from 1.46% to its highest level (7.20%); moreover, as indicated by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the nitrogen functional groups introduced on the surface of the nitrogen-enriched biochar were mainly C-N. After 10% MDEA impregnation, the maximum SO 2 adsorption capacity increased from 57.8 mg/g to 156.2 mg/g. Changes to physical and chemical properties in the nitrogen-enriched biochar indicate that the nitrogen functional groups on the surface are more important than the pore structure for SO 2 adsorption at 393 K, and that the dominant nitrogen species are quaternary nitrogen.

Improving the Performance of Gd Addition on Catalytic Activity and SO2 Resistance over MnOx/ZSM-5 Catalysts for Low-Temperature NH3-SCR

Jinkun Guan,Lusha Zhou,Weiquan Li,Die Hu,Jie Wen,Bichun Huang

SO2poisoning is a great challenge for the practical application of Mn-based catalysts in low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reactions of NOxwith NH3. A series of Gadolinium (Gd)-modified MnOx/ZSM-5 catalysts were synthesized via a citric acid–ethanol dispersion method and evaluated by low-temperature NH3-SCR. Among them, the GdMn/Z-0.3 catalyst with the molar ratio of Gd/Mn of 0.3 presented the highest catalytic activity, in which a 100% NO conversion could be obtained in the temperature range of 120–240 °C. Furthermore, GdMn/Z-0.3 exhibited good SO2resistance compared with Mn/Z in the presence of 100 ppm SO2. The results of Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed reduction of H2(H2-TPR) and temperature-programmed desorption of NH3(NH3-TPD) illustrated that such catalytic performance was mainly caused by large surface area, abundant Mn4+and surface chemisorbed oxygen species, strong reducibility and the suitable acidity of the catalyst. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS) results revealed that the addition of Gd greatly inhibited the reaction between the SO2and MnOxactive sites to form bulk manganese sulfate, thus contributing to high SO2resistance. Moreover, in situ DRIFTS experiments also shed light on the mechanism of low-temperature SCR reactions over Mn/Z and GdMn/Z-0.3, which both followed the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) and Eley–Rideal (E–R) mechanism.Keywords:SO2poisoning;low temperature;NH3-SCR;in situ DRIFTS
