Monitoring TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) that are released from functional textiles is significant for assessing the potential risk to consumers. However, determining the size distribution of TiO2 NPs is still a challenge due to agglomeration. The present study employed single particle–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) to quantify TiO2 NPs released from functional textiles. Through screening dispersants and validating the standard samples, an accurate method for determining the size and number of TiO2 NPs was developed. The validated procedure was successfully used to determine the release of TiO2 NPs from yarn in sweat and water media throughout the day. The result revealed that the yarn decorated with TiO2 NPs released approximately the same particle size distribution from 60 to 260 nm in both media. The released particle concentration was 0.094 µg/mL with a mean size of 136 nm in water and a particle concentration of 0.120 µg/mL with a mean size of 133 nm in sweat. Additionally, based upon transmission electron microscopy, anatase TiO2 NPs were identified. It is expected that this work is significant in the evaluation of the toxicological effects of multifunctional textiles modified by TiO2 NPs on human health.

Plants can absorb and accumulate engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) through water and soil, providing a potential way for nanoparticles to be enriched in humans through the food chain. In this paper, a combination of enzymatic digestion method and SP-ICP-MS analysis was used to quantitatively characterize the enriched AuNPs in mustard and lettuce plants. The results showed that Macerozyme R-10 enzyme can extract AuNPs from plants without obvious aggregation/dissolution. Both mustard and lettuce plants can absorb and enrich the complete AuNPs to the above-ground organs, and the particle number concentrations detected are 1.24 × 10 7 particles L −1 and 4.39 × 10 7 particles L −1 , respectively. With different exposure level of AuNPs(0.5 mg L −1 ,), a particle number concentration of 2.32 × 10 7 particles L −1 was detected in the stems of lettuce plants, while the mustard failed to transport AuNPs to the above-ground organs. The transport efficiency of Au ions by plants is higher than that of AuNPs, and the plants have stronger bioavailability for ions.

For understanding the environmental behavior and toxicity of Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NPs), a quantitative method for characterizing the AgNPs in soils and sediments is urgently needed. In this study, we validated a previously developed extraction method by optimizing the extraction of silver nanoparticles from soil and sediment samples to which engineered AgNPs had been added. The samples were analyzed by single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS). Initially, different extraction conditions were evaluated to validate the optimal extraction procedure. Then the optimal extraction procedure was applied to environmental soil and sediment samples spiked with AgNPs. The extraction data for Ag-NPs with sizes below 30 nm was not shown due to the particle size detection limit of the SP-ICP-MS method (∼20 nm). The number concentrations of Ag particles extracted from different environmental soils and sediments matrices were in the range of (12 ± 1–23 ± 1) × 107 particles/g soil. Similarly, 53.4–100.0% of the particulate Ag mass was recovered. For the relatively low Ag mass recovery of Guiyu agricultural soil, the Ag mass recovery shows great improvement (from 53.4 to 105.8%) by the soil dilution using SiO2. The optimal method was validated to be feasible for extracting Ag-NPs from environmental soils and sediments, except for the soil with high soil organic matter (SOM) content. The SiO2 dilution of soil provides a promising way to promote the extraction of Ag-NPs in soil (or sediment) with high SOM content, which could further promote the study on the environmental behavior and toxicity of Ag-NPs in soil and sediment environment.

Silver Nanoparticles (Ag-NPs), an emerging type of pollutant, might occur various physical and chemical transformations, which would affect its environmental fate, transformation and biological effects. Sulfurization is the most common conversion of Ag-NPs, accompanied by the formation of nano-silver sulfide (Ag 2 S-NPs). The method of Ag 2 S-NPs analysis and characterization is of great significance for assessing the environmental risks of Ag. In this study, cloud point extraction (CPE) and Single Particle-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) were used in combination to establish a simple and reliable analysis method to quantify Ag 2 S-NPs in water, with the morphology unchanged. Non-Ag 2 S-NPs were dissociated into Ag + firstly, and Ag 2 S-NPs and Ag + were separated by CPE, followed by SP-ICP-MS analysis. The extraction rate based on particle number concentration was between (76.19 ± 0.56) % to (106.35 ± 0.00) % in environmental waters. Compared with the (76.96 ± 2.18) nm Ag 2 S-NPs spiked, the particle size extracted increased slightly with (94.19 ± 2.72) nm- (97.25 ± 0.22) nm as the large-size Ag 2 S-NPs originally presented in waters, instead of agglomeration. This method could be generally applicable to the analysis of Ag 2 S-NPs in waters, and provide ideas for other metal sulfide nanoparticles (MS-NPs), which has certain significance.
