Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) caused by sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) is a serious challenge in many industries, but biofilm greatly decreases the toxicity of bactericides to cell inside. d-amino acids are potential enhancers for bactericides due to their excellent performance on biofilm inhibition. However, the mechanism of d-amino acid cooperating with bactericides for MIC inhibition is still unknown. In this study, d-tyrosine(D-Tyr)and disoctyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DDAC) were selected as the typical d-amino acid and bactericide, respectively, to evaluate their synergetic inhibition on the corrosion caused by Desulfovibrio vulgaris . D-Tyr obviously enhanced the role of DDAC in inhibiting corrosion with high corrosion inhibition efficiency at 77.23 %. The attachment of EPS and live cells on the coupon surface decreased in the presence of D-Try, leading to more cells directly exposed to DDAC. Besides, D-Try decreased the amount of live cells on the surface and thus reduced the utilization of Fe by SRB and corrosion current. Moreover, dead cells settling to the coupon surface may form a protective lay to retard the contact between live SRB and Fe, leading to slow cathode reaction and less corrosion. Therefore, D-Tyr can reduce the coverage of biofilm, thereby reducing its protective effect on SRB and achieving better corrosion inhibition effect. This work provides a new strategy for improving bactericides and inhibiting MIC.

This study investigated the degradation of aluminum-based sacrificial anodes caused by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in marine mud. Through self-discharge tests simulating real cathodic protection conditions, alongside macroscopic observations, electrochemical analysis, and microscopic characterization, we systematically elucidated the corrosion behavior and mechanisms of the anodes with and without SRB. The results showed that the electrochemical capacity of anodes in SRB-inoculated mud was only 1281.28 Ah·kg−1(efficiency: 44.82%), failing to meet the design requirement of ≥1500 Ah·kg−1. In contrast, in sterile mud, the capacity was 1972.84 Ah·kg−1(efficiency: 69.01%), which met the standard. SRB promoted the formation of discrete corrosion pits with depths reaching up to 0.43 mm, 3.07 times deeper than those observed under sterile conditions. The local pH within the pits dropped to 3–4, accelerating the selective dissolution of active elements such as Al and Zn. Mechanistic analysis revealed that the sulfides produced by SRB not only disrupt the passive film but also exacerbate the inefficient consumption of the anode through a positive feedback loop involving “acidic corrosion and electron consumption”. This led to a reduction in the protective current density, accompanied by significant fluctuations. This study provides the underlying mechanisms by which SRB degrade the performance of sacrificial anodes and valuable insights for optimizing the design of cathodic protection systems for steel structures in marine mud environments.

Sulfidated zero-valent iron (S-ZVI) is an attractive material of permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) for the remediation of contaminated groundwater. However, S-ZVI is prone to be passivated due to the oxidation of reactive and conductive iron sulfide (FeS x ) shell and the formation of inactive and non-conductive ferric (hydr)oxides, which serve as electron transfer barriers to hinder the electron flow from Fe° core to contaminants. This study thus proposed a novel approach for in-situ reactivation and reuse of micronsized S-ZVI (S-mZVI) in PRB using sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) enriched culture to realize long-lasting remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater. S-mZVI were passivated after reactions with Cr(VI) due to the formation of electron transfer barriers (mainly inactive and non-conductive Fe(III) (hyd)oxides, which increased the polarization resistance from 16.38 to 27.38 kΩ cm 2 and hindered the electron transfer from the Fe° core. Interestingly, the passivated S-mZVI was efficiently reactivated by providing the SRB-enriched culture and organic carbon within 12 h, and the Cr(VI) removal capacity of S-mZVI in the three use cycles increased to 37.4 mg Cr/g, which was 2.1 times higher than that of the virgin S-mZVI. After biological reactivation, the R p of reactivated S-mZVI decreased to 12.30 kΩ cm 2 . SRB-mediated reactivation removed the electron transfer barriers via biotic and abiotic reduction of Fe(III) (hyd)oxides. Especially, the microbial Fe(III) reduction mediated by FmnA-dmkA-fmnB-pplA-ndh2-eetAB-dmkB protein family enhanced the Fe 2+ release from the surface and the subsequent re-formation of reactive and conductive FeS x shell. A long-term PRB column test further demonstrated the feasibility of in-situ biological reactivation and reuse of S-mZVI for enhanced Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater remediation. Within 64 days, the Cr(VI) removal capacity of S-mZVI in the four use cycles increased by 3.2 times, compared to the virgin one. The bio-reactivation using the SRB-enriched culture and sulfate locally-available in groundwater will reduce the chemical and maintenance costs associated with the frequent replacement of reactive ZVI-based materials. The PRB technology based on the bio-renewable S-mZVI can be a sustainable alternative to the conventional PRBs for the long-lasting and low-cost remediation of groundwater contaminated by oxidative pollutants.

Porous polymer support beads modified by a silicone resin with bifunctional groups were prepared by using High Internal Phase Emulsion (HIPE) templated method. Their surface properties and morphological characteristics were investigated. The effect of silicone resin content has been highlighted. When the content of the silicone resin was 30%, the support exhibited a relatively higher hydrophobicity (contact angle was 118.8°) and suitable pore diameter distribution. The Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) loading biofilm/support and its desulfurization experiments for the sewage with 1000–4000 mg SO 4 2− /L have been performed, and the result shows that the polymer bead support has given higher sulfate reducing rates than that of the traditional active carbon (AC) beads and the maximum sulfate reducing rate reached to 84.56% for the wastewater with 1000 mg SO 4 2− /L after 12 h.

Detecting sulfoxide in sediment and water is an essential channel in understanding redox processes and maintaining water quality. Therefore, the creation of quick and efficient sulfoxide detection techniques is crucial to comprehending the ecotoxicity of sulfoxides. However, sulfur oxides were mainly detected in a pure water system, which greatly limited their potential practical applications. Difficulties related to selecting a detection system are a common bottleneck for applications. Herein, a brand-new fluorescent probe called BZ-QL was designed. This probe emits different fluorescence intensities in the sediment and water samples from a natural lake (China's Dianchi Lake). For the first time, the detection of sulfoxide in natural lake was realized on the basis of the correlation of the gene abundance of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) with fluorescence intensities. Results indicated a significant negative correlation between the fluorescence intensities of BZ-QL and the abundance of dsrA for the water samples ( R 2 = 0.35, P < 0.01) and sediments ( R 2 = 0.16, P < 0.05). The combination of fluorescence intensities and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) of SRB could provide unique techniques for detecting sulfur oxides in water samples. Compared with other sulfur dioxide fluorescent probes, the fluorescence detection method in this study introduces the parameter of gene abundance, and applies the probe technology to detect sulfur oxides in natural lakes. In the future, this simple and rapid detection technology could be converted into kits for promotion. In addition, other compounds could be detected by changing the recognition site of the probe.

Biosynthetic metal sulfides showed great application prospects in the environmental treatment against high-valence metal pollutants. However, the efficiency of biosynthesis, agglomeration during the reaction process, and the formation of the passivation layer during the reduction process were always the important factors restricting its development. This study explored the composition of the culture medium to promote the growth of highly corrosive sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and its metabolism to produce FeS nanoparticles (NPs). The results showed that reducing the carbon source (CS) and adding electron carriers in the culture medium effectively promoted the production of small, dispersed, and loose FeS NPs in cells. At pH = 7, 24 °C and 10 min reaction time, 0.1 g/L FeS NPs produced by SRB under the conditions of 10 % CS with 10 ppm cytochrome c medium could achieve 100 % removal efficiency of 1 mM hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). Under this condition, FeS NPs could be produced by intracellular metabolism in SRB cells, and environmental factors such as pH, metal cations, and Cl − had little effect on the removal of Cr(VI) by this FeS NPs. The surface proteins of FeS NPs significantly enhanced their antioxidant properties. After 7 days of natural environment exposure, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency of FeS NPs was only reduced by 16 % compared with the initial sample. This work provided an in-depth understanding of Cr(VI) removal by SRB biosynthesis of FeS and contributes to the widespread application of FeS in the future.

The endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) can be adopted as an indicator for the indirect detection of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB), which considered to be closely related to pipeline corrosion and human intestinal health. Unfortunately, the in-situ detection of endogenous H 2 S from SRB in the complex culture medium still faces huge challenges. Besides nonspecific adsorption from the culture medium of SRB, the problem of electrode passivation by produced elemental sulfur during electrochemical detection processes of H 2 S cannot be ignored. To address these challenges, herein a synergistic sensing platform based on self-cleaning electrode interface and indirect detection strategy (specific H 2 S-induced chemical reaction) is developed. This indirect sensing strategy-assisted self-cleaning electrochemical platform showed a relatively good linear response toward H 2 S in the range of 0.5 − 5 μM, and the corresponding limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be 5.09 nM. More importantly, the satisfactory self-cleaning electrode interface in indirect detection system (with only a 4.10% decrease in signal over 50 electrochemical repeated cycles) showed the electrode surface not being disturbed by elemental sulfur. Furthermore, this good selectivity of the indirect detection strategy in combination with the reproducibility, stability, and antifouling activity of the self-cleaning interface, enabled a synergistic sensing platform to detect H 2 S directly in the complex culture medium of SRB without time-consuming sample pretreatments . Moreover, this proposed construction strategy of synergetic sensing platform could be explored to other endogenous molecules in complex environment based on different antifouling materials and specific reactions.

Iron-based peracetic acid (PAA) advanced oxidation process (AOP) is widely used in water purification because of its high efficiency and low toxicity. In this study, for the first time, ferrous iron (Fe 2+ ) and PAA were dosed jointly into the rising main sewer reactor, to verify the feasibility of sulfide and methane control as well as investigate the comprehensive mechanism of Fe 2+ /PAA on sewer biofilm. Results demonstrated the superior biocidal effect of Fe 2+ /PAA dosing than that of PAA alone. Intermittent Fe 2+ /PAA dosing showed that the average inhibitory rate of sulfide production rate (SPR) and methane production rate (MPR) was 52.0% and 29.9%, respectively, at a Fe 2+ /PAA molar ratio of 1:1 and PAA concentration of 3 mmol/L (i.e., the mass-based concentrations of Fe 2+ and PAA were 6.79 mg-Fe/L and 228 mg/L, respectively). Beside, sewer biofilm was found to be resistant to PAA during repeated dosing events. However, resistance could be alleviated by introducing sulfide in situ in the Fe 2+ /PAA process, and SPR and MPR were further reduced to 27.39% and 67.32% of the control, respectively. LIVE/DEAD Staining showed that Fe 2+ /PAA exhibited a strong destructive effect on microbial cells, with the proportion of viable cells being 26.34%. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and free radical quenching results indicated that the inhibitory order was R-O• > •OH > Fe(IV), which led to the disruption of cellular integrity (i.e., 17.24% increase in LDH) and intracellular enzyme system (i.e., cellular metabolic disorders). Microbial analysis revealed that long-term Fe 2+ /PAA dosing decreased the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) abundance, and the dominant genus of methanogenic archaea (MA) shifted from Methanofastidiosum, Methanobacterium to Methanosaeta . The cost of Fe 2+ /PAA dosing on methane and sulfide control in rising main sewers was $1.81/kg-S, economically and environmental-friendly attractive for practical applications.

The treatment of heavy metal(loid) (HM) composite pollution has long posed a challenge for the bioremediation of organohalide-contaminated sites. Given the prevalent cohabitation of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) with organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB), we proposed a sulfate-amendment strategy to achieve synergistic remediation of trichloroethene and diverse HMs [50μM of As(III), Ni(II), Cu(II), Pb(II)]. Correspondingly, 50–75 μM sulfate was introduced to HM inhibitory batches to investigate the enhancement effect of sulfate amendment on bio-dechlorination. Dechlorination kinetics and MATLAB modeling indicated that sulfate amendment comprehensively improved the reductive dechlorination performance in the presence of As(III), Ni(II), Pb(II) and mixed HMs, while no enhancement was observed under Cu(II) exposure. Additionally, sulfate introduction effectively accelerated the detoxification of Ni(II), Pb(II), Cu(II), and As(III), achieving removal efficiencies of 76.87 %, 64.01 %, 86.37 %, and 95.50 % within the first three days, respectively. Meanwhile, propionate dynamics and acetogenesis indicated enhanced carbon source and e-donor supply. 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomic analysis results demonstrated that HM sequestration was accomplished jointly by SRB and HM-resistant bacteria via extracellular precipitation (metal sulfide) and intracellular sequestration, while their contribution depended on the specific coexisting HM species present. This study highlights the critical role of sulfate in the concurrent bioremediation of HM-organohalide composite contamination and provides insights for developing a cost-effective in-situ bioremediation strategy.
