To avoid potential ecological and health problems caused by phosphorus-based flame retardants, a novel phosphorus-free PBA-Salen-Ni flame retardant is successfully synthesized in this work. In a nutshell, boron-containing metal complexes are prepared by nickel salts and chelating PBA-Salen molecule (PBA: p -phenylenediboronic acid). While the obtained material inherently has good compatibility and can endow polymers with good flame retardant properties at low addition levels. Besides, the char shielding layer and the “labyrinth effect” of the special porous char layer structure formed after the combustion of EP/PBA-Salen-Ni retard the transfer of volatile products, giving EP excellent smoke suppression properties. The results show that the limiting oxygen index value of the EP/PBA-Salen-Ni composites is increased from 25.6% (pure EP) to 30.5%, and it can pass the UL-94 V-0 rating when the addition amount is only 5wt%. Particularly, compared with pure EP, the total smoke production (19.9 m 2 ) and peak heat release rate (859.6 kW m −2 ) of EP/PBA-Salen-Ni composites are reduced by 36% and 33%, respectively. Therefore, this work provides a new idea for the rational design of phosphorus-free flame retardants that are mainly on condensed phase flame retardancy and have a good smoke suppression effect.

A functionalized cross-linked polyphosphazenes microsphere (Salen-PZN-Ni@DHPP-PTS) was prepared by wrapping Salen-Ni basis polyphosphazenes (Salen-PZN-Ni) with a kind of hybrid flame retardant (DHPP-PTS) to improve the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of epoxy (EP) composites. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the addition of Salen-PZN-Ni@DHPP-PTS greatly improved the thermal stability of the EP composites. The addition of 5 wt% Salen-PZN-Ni@DHPP-PTS remarkably improved the fire safety of EP, which was illustrated by the results of the cone calorimeter. For example, the peak heat release rate and total heat release rate of the EP composites were reduced by 44.2% and 33.1%, respectively. The limiting oxygen index value of 5% Salen-PZN-Ni@DHPP-PTS/EP composite reached 29.8% and UL-94 achieved V-1 rating. In addition, the introduction of Salen-PZN-Ni@DHPP-PTS effectively suppressed the production of toxic CO and other volatiles. Meantime, the synergistic effect between Salen-PZN-Ni and DHPP-PTS was found. The potential flame retardant mechanism of Salen-PZN-Ni@DHPP-PTS is regarded as the synergistic catalytic carbonization effect and the extremely thermally stable components forming. Enhanced fire safety of EP composites by synergistic interaction of various components (nickel and DHPP-PTS) with polyphosphazenes microspheres.

To enhance the flame retardancy and smoke suppression performance of epoxy resins (EP), this study reports the synthesis of a high-efficiency flame retardant (SLDH-Ni-KD) through sequential intercalation modification and surface functionalization of layered double hydroxide (LDH). The optimized design addresses both the flame-retardant efficacy enhancement and the inherent compatibility limitations of LDH in EP matrices. Comprehensive combustion characterization was conducted through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), cone calorimetry testing (CCT), limiting oxygen index (LOI) determination, and UL-94 vertical burning assessment. The underlying flame-retardant mechanism was systematically investigated using scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetry-infrared spectroscopy analysis of char residues. Experimental results revealed that the synergistic interaction between LDH and DOPO components, combined with the bi-phase catalytic charring effects mediated by magnesium/aluminum ions, enabled the 7% SLDH-Ni-KD/EP composite to achieve exceptional fire safety performance. Specifically, the composite demonstrated an elevated LOI value of 33.8% ± 0.1%, accompanied by substantial reductions in total heat release (THR) and smoke production rate (SPR). Mechanical property assessments identified 5 wt.% SLDH-Ni-KD as the optimal loading for maintaining EP matrix compatibility. This work successfully develops an innovative LDH-based nano-flame-retardant system that integrates high-efficiency fire-retardant and smoke-suppressing functionalities, establishing a novel multielement synergistic strategy for polymer flame retardancy.

Two novel Salen-DPCPs metal complexes (Salen-DPCP-1 and Salen-DPCP-2), containing both Salen-Schiff base (Salen), phenyl phosphate structures (DPCP) and nickel component, were prepared to reduce fire hazards of epoxy resin (EP). The results showed that 5 wt % addition of Salen-DPCP-1 brought a higher flame-retardant efficiency to the EP, where the V-0 rating in UL-94 burning test and 31.5% of limiting oxygen index (LOI) were achieved. Meanwhile, total heat release, total smoke production, and total CO yield dramatically decreased by 28.1, 23.6, and 21.4%. In addition, these results basically reappeared when Salen-DPCP-2 were introduced into EP to obtain Salen-DPCP-2/EP composites. Chemical structure and morphology characterization of the carbon residue confirmed that Salen-DPCPs improved the catalytic charring ability and the noncombustible gas releasing ability by the Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Scanning electron microscopy technology. Therefore, it is an efficient strategy to develop novel Salen composites modified by flame-retardant groups to improve the fire rating of polymers. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.
