EDXRF analysis of TiO2 nanoparticles bioaccumulation in aquatic plant, Salvinia natans

Qing Shan,Yong Liu,Xinlei Zhang,Jinfa Shao,Daqian Hei,Yongsheng Ling,Wenbao Jia

In this work, the biological enrichment of TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) by Salvinia natans was studied, and the EDXRF technology was used to evaluate the ability of Salvinia natans to enrich TiO 2 NPs. At the same time, with the accumulation of TiO 2 Nps in Salvinia natans, the changes of nutrient elements (P, S, Ca, Fe, and Zn) in its leaves and root tissues of Salvinia natans were observed simultaneously. The experimental results indicate that the Salvinia natans showed a strong potential to enrich the TiO 2 NPs. It had accumulated about 14.9 mg/g and 2.2 mg/g of titanium in roots and leaves when they were cultured in the highest TiO 2 NPs concentration (20 mg/L) to saturation. By calculating the bioconcentration factors (BCF), the enrichment ability of TiO 2 NPs in S. natans was evaluated. It was found that the enrichment effect of Salvinia natans on TiO 2 NPs showed negative correlation with the culture concentration. As to nutrient elements, the contents of P, S, and Ca in the roots and leaves were significantly increased with the increase of Ti enrichment. It might mean that the TiO 2 NPs have a positive effect on the growth and development of Salvinia natans. Besides, the reduction of Fe might indicate that the absorption of TiO 2 NPs affects the bioaccumulation of metal ions in Salvinia natans.

Enhanced competitiveness of Spirodela polyrhiza in co-culture with Salvinia natans under combined exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics and polychlorinated biphenyls

Guanglong Chen,Ting Pan,Dandan Gao,Hongping Liao,Jun Wang

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are prevalent in the environment and pose potential threats to ecosystems. However, studies on the phytotoxicity of MNPs and PCBs on primary producers are limited. This study investigated the effects of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs, 10 mg/L) and 2,2′,5,5′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB-52, 0.1 mg/L), on the growth of Spirodela polyrhiza and Salvinia natans , and their impact on plant competitive ability under co-culture conditions. Laser confocal microscopy images revealed that PS-NPs accumulated on the leaf and root surfaces of both species. Combined exposure to PS-NPs and PCB-52 significantly inhibited the average specific and relative growth rates (RGR) of both species, reduced chlorophyll a and b levels, and slightly increased carotenoid content, disrupting the photosynthetic system. PCB-52 exacerbated PS-NPs accumulation on plants, leading to increased hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and superoxide anion (O 2 − ) production in both roots and leaves. This affects the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and the soluble protein content. The combined treatment with PS-NPs and PCB-52 induced greater ecological stress in both species than the treatment with PS-NPs alone. In addition, the combined treatment with PS-NPs and PCB-52 significantly improved the relative yield and competition balance index of S. polyrhiza , indicating that PS-NPs + PCB-52 enhanced the competitive ability of S. polyrhiza when co-cultured with S. natans . This study confirmed the effects of co-exposure to PS-NPs and PCB-52 on aquatic plant growth and species competition, contributing to better insight into the ecological impacts of MNPs and organic pollutants.

Salvinia natans-Based Hierarchical Structures for Solar Thermal Clean Water Production from High-Salinity Wastewater

Yuting Zhang,Yimeng Shi,Dongpu Hu,Sha Liang,Wenbo Yu,Fang Xu,Zhen Hu,Jiakuan Yang,Shushan Yuan,Bart Van der Bruggen

Biomaterial-based solar-driven evaporation has great potential for wastewater treatment and seawater desalination with a high energy conversion and utilization efficiency. However, technology gaps still exist for effectively and directly applying multiscale structures and intrinsic water transport channels of natural materials to enhance high-efficiency photothermal evaporation. In this study, a high-performance biomass-derived photothermal evaporative material was obtained using Salvinia natans, a common aquatic floating plant, together with simple poly(m-phenylenediamine) oxidation modification, building a hybrid biomass evaporator. With advantageous natural features of adequate water transport, microscale–nanoscale hierarchical structures, effective water activation, and antisalt-fouling function, the hybrid biomass evaporator achieves a high evaporation rate of 2.24 kg m–2 h–1 under one sun radiation (1 kW m–2). In addition, modified Salvinia natans also demonstrate certain ability to remove heavy metals during the photothermal evaporation of wastewater. This work offers a new perspective on the synthesis of an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solar-driven evaporator material, which has the advantages of low cost, simple process, and high photothermal conversion efficiency, and can be widely applied to seawater desalination and the treatment of wastewater with high salt concentrations.

Bionic design of multifunctional superhydrophobic fiber-based nonwoven fabric inspired by salvinia natans for efficient photothermal oil-water separation and micro plastic extraction on aero-engine filters

Xiangyu Han,Zuozhu Yin,Yingping Yang,Haitao Yang,Jilin Xu,Zhen Hong,Chan Xie,Yidan Luo,Mingshan Xue

Existing aero-engine filters are susceptible to clogging by water, oil, microplastics and other contaminants under complex operating conditions, resulting in reduced filtration efficiency and shorter maintenance intervals. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a multifunctional superhydrophobic material that can efficiently separate oil and water and adsorb pollutants. Based on this, we prepared a multifunctional superhydrophobic nonwoven fabric made of ethylene-propylene side by side (ES) fiber, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and Mg Fe layered double hydroxide (Mg Fe LDH). This multifunctional fiber-based nonwoven fabric imitates the rough structure of the surface of salvinia natans through bionic design, which shows excellent hydrophobic performance, and the water contact angle can be as high as 160 ± 2°. At an ambient temperature of 70 °C, the oil-water separation efficiency can reach 98.8 % by thermal radiation. The oil-water separation efficiency was 98 % when the material was irradiated by halogen lamps simulating infrared light, and 97 % at ambient temperature without any light. Compared with the modified polyurethane sponge widely used for oil-water separation, the super hydrophobic multi-functional non-woven fabric has three advantages. Firstly, modified polyurethane sponge only performs a single function: oil-water separation, while superhydrophobic multifunctional non-woven fabric can achieve synergistic effects of photothermal oil-water separation, organic pollutant degradation, and microplastic extraction. In addition, the mechanical and chemical stability of superhydrophobic multifunctional non-woven fabric is stronger, which means that it has greater potential for application in aircraft engines under harsh working conditions. Finally, the preparation of multifunctional non-woven fabrics is very simple and has the potential for large-scale production.
