Significant amounts of Sb(III) and Sb(V) are present in printing and dyeing wastewater (PDW), which leads to the detrimental effects on the environment if not treated properly. In this paper, the adsorptive removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V) by TiCl 4 derived flocs and the oxidation process were investigated. The results showed that TiCl 4 conducted superior coagulation performance on Sb(III) removal than Sb(V) in terms of dosage, pH range and immunity to interference. When the dosage was 50 mg/L and the final pH was 5.0, the concentration of Sb(III) and Sb(V) was reduced from 2000 μg/L to 100 μg/L and 180 μg/L, respectively. According to the Langmuir model, The adsorption for Sb(III) (74.27 mg/g) by TiCl 4 derived flocs was higher than Sb(V) (68.45 mg/g). The Sb(III) in the solution could partially inhibit the adsorption of Sb(V). It was also observed that the Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V), which was owing to the molecular oxygen during the coagulation and the flocs might act as catalyst. The actual printing and dyeing wastewater treatment experiments results showed that pre-reduction of Sb(V) to Sb(Ⅲ) could considerably improve the total Sb removal from 83 % to 98.8 %. The characterization results, such as zeta potential and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), indicated that the Sb(Ⅲ) removal was mainly achieved by chemisorption. The Sb(V) removal was mainly dependent on chemisorption and electrostatic adsorption, while the latter contributed more than former. The results of DFT calculations explained the reason for higher removal efficiencies of Sb(III) than Sb(V) in the TiCl 4 coagulation system. This study provides a new idea for the efficient removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V) using TiCl 4 in PDW to save the cost in engineering practice.

In this study, effects of antimony Sb(V) on growth, pigments content, oxygen evolution, and photosystem II (PSII) activity of Microcystis aeruginosa were investigated. JIP-test, Q
− A
reoxidation kinetic test and S-state test were used in this study to study the energy distribution and electron transport in PSII. Treatment with Sb(V) at various concentrations ranging from 5 to 100 mg/l had long-term effects on growth, pigments content, and oxygen evolution of M . aeruginosa . Low concentration of Sb(V) had no significant inhibition of the biomass production and PSII activity but inhibited the pigment synthesis. Growth, pigments content, oxygen evolution, and PSII activity were seriously inhibited when treated by high concentration of Sb(V) (100 mg/l). The target sites of Sb(V) toxic effect on the PSII of M . aeruginosa were mainly on the donor side and the apparatus in the light-dependent reaction. The quantum yield for photochemistry, density of reaction centers and photosynthesis performance index decreased, whereas the dissipated energy increased. PSII activity of M . aeruginosa was promoted when exposure to 50 mg/l Sb(V) by increasing the density of active reaction centers and electron transport after Q

Herein, the synergistic removal of Sb(Ⅲ) and Sb(Ⅴ) from wastewater by polymeric ferric sulfate (PFS) and the oxidation process were investigated. The results showed that PFS exhibited superior performance on Sb(Ⅲ) removal in terms of coagulant dosage, applied pH, and anti-interference properties than Sb(V) removal. For the Sb liquid in pure water matrix (Sb=1000 μg/L), when the dose was 60 mg/L and the final pH was 5.0, the independent removal of Sb(Ⅲ) and Sb(V) was 95% and 90%, respectively. Meanwhile, Sb(Ⅲ) removal in the PFS coagulation system remained stable within a wider pH range (pH=3–9). Sb(Ⅲ) could be preferentially removed in the solution column and had an inhibitory effect on the adsorption of Sb(V). Sb(Ⅲ) was also partially oxidized to Sb (V) during the coagulation process, which was influenced by the coagulant dosage and the solution pH. The results of the actual printing and dyeing wastewater (PDW) treatment indicated that the pre-reduction of Sb(V) to Sb(Ⅲ) could significantly increase the total Sb removal from 72.0% to 97.5%. The characterization results, such as Zeta potential and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), indicated that the Sb(Ⅲ) removal by PFS was achieved mainly through chemical adsorption. While the Sb(V) removal was realized by both chemical adsorption and electrostatic adsorption, the electrostatic adsorption contributed more than the chemical adsorption. This study provides a new idea for understanding the synergistic removal of Sb(Ⅲ) and Sb(V) using PFS in PDW advanced treatment.

Simulating the adsorption behavior of Sb(V) on goethite is of great significance for predicting the mobility of Sb(V) in soil. However, there is still a lack of charge distribution and multisite surface complexation (CD-MUSIC) models that conform to the actual adsorption mechanism. Therefore, our research combined the previous EXAFS results with the SCMs and established two CD-MUSIC models (Model I, which introduced bidentate binuclear and bidentate mononuclear complexes, and Model II, which introduced bidentate mononuclear and monodentate mononuclear complexes). It is also one of the rare cases that bidentate edge- and corner-sharing adsorption complexes have been distinguished by introducing different amounts of H + . The results showed that Model I was more suitable for predicting the adsorption behavior of Sb(V) on the goethite surface than Model II. However, at low pH and high Sb(V) loading, the presence of the monodentate complex ≡FeOHSb(OH) 5 0.5- was possible due to the fast and slow two-step mechanism. Using the optimized CD-MUSIC model parameters, the contribution of surface species to the equilibrium adsorption under different conditions was determined. In the adsorption edge and adsorption isotherm simulation process, the edge-sharing bidentate mononuclear complex ≡(FeO) 2 H 2 Sb(OH) 4 was always the most important product, which was consistent with the results of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. The applicability of the model parameters was verified by predicting the competitive adsorption between PO 4 3− and Sb(V). The CD-MUSIC model established in the present study could be a useful tool for evaluating the equilibrium distribution behavior and environmental risk of Sb(V) in different types of soils.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with ability to create rich defects in the structures for exposed binding sites are beneficial for wastewater treatment. However, the inter-relation between the defect concentration and heavy metal removal performance still deserves the exploration. Herein, UiO-66-X crystal materials are successfully synthesized in the presence of monocarboxylic acid of acetic, benzoic, and trifluoroacetic acid, and the effect of defect concentration on Sb(V) removal performance is systematically studied. XRD, TG, EPR and XPS characterizations reveal that the addition of modulators increases the content of defects in the UiO-66-X, which is beneficial to improve the sites utilization. As expected, the Sb(V) adsorption properties of UiO-66-AA, UiO-66-BA and UiO-66-TFA are boosted by 54.1%, 140.0% and 197.7% compared to that of pristine UiO-66. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirm that UiO-66-TFA with the most defects exhibits lower adsorption energy and higher charge transfer, significantly improving the uptake performance of Sb(V). Additionally, the UiO-66-TFA successfully removes antimony in actual water from the Tianyi Lake and Ganjiang River with residual concentrations below 5 μg L −1 , meeting the drinking water standard. This work provides guidance for the rational selection of modulators for efficient heavy metal removal from wastewater.

The extracellular polymeric substances coating magnetic powders-supported nano zero-valent iron (nZVI@EPS@Fe 3 O 4 ) was synthesized, using reduction and adsorption to treat Sb(V) wastewater. The adsorption performance and mechanism were investigated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The adsorption capacity of nZVI@EPS@Fe 3 O 4 (79.56 mg/g at pH = 5) was improved compared to that of the original materials (60.74 mg/g). The spectral analysis shows that both nZVI and EPS@Fe 3 O 4 in nZVI@EPS@Fe 3 O 4 played an important role in reducing Sb(V) to Sb(III) and adsorbing Sb. The reducibility and adsorption capacity of nZVI@EPS@Fe 3 O 4 towards Sb(V) remained strong under aerobic condition (62% Sb(III), 79.56 mg/g), although they were slightly weaker than those under anaerobic condition (74% Sb(III), 91.78 mg/g). nZVI@EPS@Fe 3 O 4 showed good performance in regeneration experiments. nZVI@EPS@Fe 3 O 4 is promising as a cost-effective and highly efficient material for Sb(V)-contaminated water. This study is meaningful in understanding the redox behaviour of nZVI composites in aerobic and anaerobic conditions.

In this study, the selective adsorption performance of different Fe-Mn binary oxides (FMBOs) towards Sb(V) in the textile wastewater under different concentrations of coexisting anions, surfactants and dyes were investigated. Results showed that the influences of different anions on the Sb(V) removal followed an order of phosphate > carbonate > sulfate > nitrate > chloride. The frequently-used organic acid of acetate was found to have insignificant effect. The coexisting surfactant with sulfonic groups could have adverse effect on the removal due to sulfonic groups could compete the adsorptive sites on Fe oxides with Sb(V). While the quaternary ammonium surfactant might have minor effect. The influences of the three widely used dyes on the Sb(V) adsorption decreased in the following order: reactive black-5 >acid orange-7> disperse blue-60, which confirmed that the dyes with sulfonic groups would have relatively higher effect. The selective adsorption capacities of Sb(V) by FMBOs followed an order of FMBO 3 > FMBO 5 >FMBO 10 > FMBO 20 >PFO. Fixed-bed column adsorption supplied useful parameters and evidently indicated that the cyclic utilization of FMBO 3 was cost-efficient for practical dynamic Sb(V) removal. The Sb(V) removal by FMBO 3 from real textile wastewater can simultaneously improve the removal efficiency, stabilize pH and prevent the increase of iron concentration as compared to the traditional coagulation, further demonstrating the high practical applicability of FMBO 3 .

Antimony enrichment in aquatic environments is of great concern to international community. High-temperature geothermal waters usually contain excessive Sb, which are apt to contaminate the groundwaters or surface waters used as drinking waters in and around a hydrothermal area. However, Sb removal from geothermal water is rarely documented and the effect of high temperature on Sb removal has not received much attention. In this study, batch sorption experiments were conducted to investigate Sb removal from water by a hydroxyl-intercalated, mechanochemically synthesized Mg-Fe-LDH (i.e. Mg-Fe-OH-LDH) capable of avoiding secondary pollutions commonly related to other Mg-Fe-LDH intercalated by undesirable anions, such as Cl − and NO 3 − . The sorption capacities of Mg-Fe-OH-LDH for Sb(III) and Sb(V) were up to 48.7 and 30.0 mg/g, respectively. Notably, Mg-Fe-OH-LDH performed even better in removing aqueous Sb(V) at higher temperatures, superior to sorption of Sb by iron oxides that is generally exothermic and tends to be inhibited by increasing reaction temperature. The removal of Sb(V) existing as Sb(OH) 6 − by Mg-Fe-OH-LDH was attributable to its exchange with interlayer hydroxyl, and therefore could be impaired to some degree by coexisting anions with stronger electronegativity or smaller ionic radii . In contrast, anion exchange didn't contribute so much to Sb(III) sorption, because the main Sb(III) species at pH < 10 is neutral Sb(OH) 3 . XPS analyses confirmed that inner-sphere complexation between sorbed Sb(III) and Fe on Mg-Fe-OH-LDH layers was formed, which was hardly affected by competitive anions. Mg-Fe-OH-LDH is promising to be practically applied in removing both Sb(III) and Sb(V) from contaminated natural waters, wastewaters, or geothermal waters potentially acting as a pollution source .

Wastewater generated during mining remains a significant source of antimony pollution, because techniques to quickly and efficiently remove antimony from wastewater do not exist. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a specific type of Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs), was successfully used to remove trace levels (1 mg L −1 ) of Sb(V) with a high removal efficiency when the ZIF-8 dose was 0.5 g L −1 . Scanning electron microscopy-X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) indicated that Sb(V) was adsorbed onto the ZIF-8surface. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of ZIF-8 before and after adsorption of Sb(V) indicated that ZIF-8 was successfully synthesized, and remained structurally stable after Sb(V) was adsorbed. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) both suggested complexation of zinc on ZIF-8 with Sb(V), where removal of Sb(V) by ZIF-8 followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm with pseudo second-order kinetics. Thus, a possible removal mechanism was proposed which involved Sb(V) complexing with the zinc hydroxyl groups on ZIF-8 (Zn–OH–Sb). Practically, ZIF-8, could remove 78.6% of Sb(V) from a mining wastewater containing 20 μg L −1 Sb(V). Furthermore, ZIF-8 could be remain active after repeated uses and could still remove and 42.3% of Sb(V) from wastewater containing 1 mg L −1 ) Sb(V) even when the ZIF-8 was reused five time. This indicated that ZIF-8 had potential for practical removal of Sb(V) from mining wastewaters.

Fe-Mn binary oxides (FMBO) with different Fe/Mn molar ratios were synthesized to investigate the influence of the changed iron oxides forms and the manganese oxide on the removal efficacy of Sb(V) from water under neutral pH. The characterization tests by electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy showed that FMBO gradually changed from granular to aciculiform or fibrous structure and their crystalline degree increased with the decreasing Mn content. The ferric oxides in FMBO transformed from 2-L ferrihydrite-like substance with amorphous state to goethite or lepidocrocite with high crystalline as the amount of added Mn reduced during the preparation. The Sb(V) adsorption rates and capacities of FMBO both decreased and the influence of pH on the Sb(V) removal became greater with the decreasing Mn oxide content. All the results indicated that the addition of Mn could greatly improve the Sb(V) removal performance of FMBO through promoting the formation and preventing the transformation of amorphous ferric oxide in FMBO during the preparation, whose Sb(V) adsorption ability was confirmed to be stronger than that of goethite or lepidocrocite. Further exploration indicated the complexation reaction between Sb(V) and amorphous ferric oxide played a key role in Sb(V) adsorption by FMBO. Meanwhile, FMBO with a Fe/Mn molar ratio of 3:1 (FMBO 3 ) exhibited excellent regeneration performance and the amorphous iron oxide in FMBO 3 gradually transformed into crystalline iron oxide during the consecutive recycling.

Since antimony (Sb) is a toxic metalloid cost-effective method for the simultaneous removal of the two major Sb species from mining wastewater has attracted much attention. In this study, phytosynthesized iron nanoparticles ( n Fe) prepared using a eucalyptus leaf extract were successfully used to simultaneously remove Sb(III) and Sb(V) via an adsorption and oxidation mechanism with removal efficiencies of 100 and 97.7% for Sb(III) and Sb(V), respectively. Advanced analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ion chromatography-atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (IC-AFS), and electrochemical analysis confirmed that Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V) by Fe(III) on the n Fe surface while Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) indicated that both Sb(III) and Sb(V) were adsorbed onto n Fe. Adsorption of both Sb(III) and Sb(V) best fit the Langmuir adsorption model with R 2 of 0.999 and 0.989, respectively and both followed pseudo-second-order kinetics with R 2 of 0.999 and 0.981, respectively. Furthermore, the adsorption rate of Sb(III) was faster than that of Sb(V) due to inner-sphere complex formation, and the Fe–O bonds in the asymmetric tetrahedron structure of Sb(III) were easier to break due to a lower energy barrier (0.863 eV). Consequently, a simultaneous removal mechanism of Sb(III) and Sb(V) was proposed. Finally, n Fe was used practically to remove Sb in mining wastewater with a removal efficiency of 93.5%, demonstrating that n Fe have significant potential to remove Sb in contaminated mining wastewaters.

Although ferrihydrite (Fh) exhibits good Sb(V) adsorption behavior, the instability of its amorphous structure limits its engineering applications. In this study, siliceous ferrihydrite (SiFh) was prepared via coprecipitation to resolve these limitations. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and SiFh aging tests revealed that the growth of Fh particles covered with Fe–O–Si links was inhibited while maintaining their amorphous structure. Meanwhile, the XRD patterns indicated that SiFh maintained excellent stability after five adsorption–desorption cycles. During the aging process, the added Si decreased the electrostatic interaction between SiFh and Sb(V), which weakened the affinity between Sb(V) and Fh; however, most of the Sb(V) still entered the Fe lattice after seven days of aging, which was favorable for Sb(V) recovery during reutilization. Furthermore, Sb(V) adsorbed from the simulated textile wastewater onto SiFh had the highest adsorption energy (E ads ), which meant its unstable inner-sphere complexation on the surface of SiFh. Meanwhile, the presence of SO 4 2− , NO 3 − , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ contributed to Sb(V) outer-sphere adsorption. Both of these factors were conducive to Sb(V) desorption. Hence, SiFh is a promising adsorbent owing to its facile preparation process, stability, and optimal regeneration properties.
