The rational design and fabrication of nanostructures has become a fashionable strategy for pursing high thermoelectric performance in solid-state materials. Here we report nanostructured Te–Sb2Te3 composites with significantly enhanced thermoelectric performance through a scalable bottom-up method followed by a rapid sintering process. The power factor along with the carrier concentration could be significantly enhanced by increasing the number of point defects of . Meanwhile, a great number of boundaries and hetero-interfaces between the Te and Sb2Te3 nanoparticles could play an important role in blocking phonons, resulting in the evident suppression of lattice thermal conductivity. Ultimately, a highest zT value close to 1.0 could be achieved at 623 K in samples with components of 2.6 mol% Sb2Te3 and 97.4 mol% Te. Such a peak zT value is comparable to that of doped Te materials synthesized by the conventional solid-state reaction process. This work reveals that high thermoelectric performance could be realized in an intentionally designed nanocomposite by synergistically improving the power factor and suppressing the lattice thermal conductivity.

The p-type Sb2Te3alloy, a binary compound belonging to the V2VI3-based materials, has been widely used as a commercial material in the room-temperature zone. However, its low thermoelectric performance hinders its application in the low-medium temperature range. In this study, we prepared Sb2Te3nanosheets coated with nanometer-sized Pt particles using a combination of solvothermal and photo-reduction methods. Our findings demonstrate that despite the adverse effects on certain properties, the addition of Pt particles to Sb2Te3significantly improves the thermoelectric properties, primarily due to the enhanced electronic conductivity. The optimalZTvalue reached 1.67 at 573 K for Sb2Te3coated with 0.2 wt% Pt particles, and it remained above 1.0 within the temperature range of 333–573 K. These values represent a 47% and 49% increase, respectively, compared to the pure Sb2Te3matrix. This enhancement in thermoelectric performance can be attributed to the presence of Pt metal particles, which effectively enhance carrier and phonon transport properties. Additionally, we conducted a Density Functional Theory (DFT) study to gain further insights into the underlying mechanisms. The results revealed that Sb2Te3doped with Pt exhibited a doping level in the band structure, and a sharp rise in the Density of States (DOS) was observed. This sharp rise can be attributed to the presence of Pt atoms, which lead to enhanced electronic conductivity. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that the incorporation of nanometer-sized Pt particles effectively improves the carrier and phonon transport properties of the Sb2Te3alloy. This makes it a promising candidate for medium-temperature thermoelectric applications, as evidenced by the significant enhancement in thermoelectric performance achieved in this study. Keywords:thermoelectric materials;Sb2Te3nanosheets;Pt nanoparticles;solvothermal method

Two-dimensional transition-metal chalcogenides (TMCs) have great potential as high-efficiency hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts to replace the traditional noble-metal catalysts. Although many strategies have been developed to improve the efficiency of the HER of TMCs, how to accurately and appropriately regulate the catalyst to increase the catalytic activity remains a challenge. Here, this work reports a strategy for regulating the defects of Sb2Te3 by ion irradiation technology to improve the activity of HER and studies the effect of irradiation dose on material properties in detail. Electrochemical tests show that compared with the original Sb2Te3, the HER performance of Sb2Te3 irradiated with Fe10+ is significantly improved in an acidic solution. Through the analysis of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images, it is found that various defects appear on the surface of Sb2Te3 after irradiation with iron ions. The generation of defects not only increases the active sites but also improves the conductivity of the material. It is worth noting that the Fe10+ irradiation changes the surface hydrophilicity of the Sb2Te3 material and accelerates the desorption of hydrogen bubbles, which can expose the active sites in time and reduce the damage to the material caused by the desorption of large bubbles. This strategy of regulating the surface defects of materials by changing the irradiation dose provides an idea for the performance control of electrocatalysts.

Many recent efforts on the electrode design for advanced Li-ion batteries (LIBs) are often devoted to increasing the gravimetric capacity, but little attention is paid to the volumetric capacity which is more critical for practical application. Though the alloying-type anode materials are quite attractive, the challenge is that they must be composited with a large amount of carbon materials (e.g., GO, rGO, CNT) to buffer their large volume change, which would undoubtedly sacrifice the volumetric energy density of the whole electrode due to the carbon’s low tap density (∼0.05 g/cm3). Herein, we propose the unique layered Sb2Te3, which possesses high conductivity and a large volumetric capacity (3419 mAh/cm3), to be served as the alternative anode for LIBs. Furthermore, we introduce natural graphite, which is low price and with high density (2.25 g/cm3), into Sb2Te3 to successfully build a novel Sb2Te3@Gra composite in which the Sb2Te3 particles are wrapped by graphite layers. Interestingly, this modified Sb2Te3@Gra exhibits much more superior cycle stability (570 mAh/g after 200 cycles, 96% retention) than pure Sb2Te3 (130 mAh/g after 200 cycles, 22% retention), while keeping its original large volumetric capacity output (∼3200 mAh/cm3) at the same time. More specially, it enables a reversible structure recovery of Sb2Te3, guaranteeing the electrode integrity and cyclability. These extraordinary phenomena are investigated in detail, whose results display that the outer graphite layer plays an important role by facilitating the intimate contact with Sb2Te3 particles and protecting them from pulverization. Besides, such graphite layer greatly promotes the electron-transfer during lithiation, helping to improve the rate capability (372 mAh/g at 2000 mA/g, 60% retention). Consequently, the assembled Sb2Te3//LiCoO2 full cell delivers a large capacity of 500 mAh/g, with stable discharge plateau and cycle stability, revealing its high potential for practical application.

As a sustainable and green technology for producing high-purity hydrogen, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has received extensive attention. The development of an electrocatalyst with good HER activity is the key to economic water electrolysis. Here, this work reports a defect-mediated successive ion layer adsorption and reaction method to construct Ag 2 S/irradiated Sb 2 Te 3 heterojunctions with good HER activity. First, ion irradiation is used to introduce a large number of defects into Sb 2 Te 3 . The defective Sb 2 Te 3 is continuously cyclically immersed in AgNO 3 solution and Na 2 S solution. Ag + and S 2- ions are adsorbed on the defect sites of Sb 2 Te 3 and deposited as Ag 2 S and the heterojunction of Ag 2 S/irradiated Sb 2 Te 3 is obtained. By this strategy, the electrochemical active surface area of the material is increased, reduces the charge transfer resistance, and improves the hydrophilicity of the material surface, thus exhibiting good HER activity. In this work, ion irradiation is used to regulate the surface defects of materials and then to regulate the growth of heterojunction to achieve the purpose of regulating the properties of material. The heterojunction growth method controlled by defect engineering can be widely used in the preparation of heterojunction materials in other energy and environmental fields.

Antimony telluride (Sb2Te3) and its based alloys are of importance to p-type semiconductors for thermoelectric applications near room temperature. Herein, we report a simple, low-energy intensive, and scalable surfactant-assisted reflux method for the synthesis of Sb2Te3 nanoparticles in the solvent ethylene glycol (EG) at low temperatures (120–180 °C). The formation mechanism of platelike Sb2Te3 nanoparticles is proposed. Also, it is found that the size, shape, and chemical composition of the products could be controlled by the introduction of organic surfactants (CTAB, PVP, etc.) or inorganic salts (EDTA-Na2, NaOH, etc.). Additionally, the collected Sb2Te3 nanoparticles were further fabricated into nanostructured pellets using cold-compaction and annealing techniques. Low resistivity [(7.37–19.4) × 10–6 Ω m], moderate Seebeck coefficient (103–141 μV K–1), and high power factor (10–16 × 10–4 W m–1 K–2) have been achieved in our Sb2Te3-nanostructured bulk materials. The relatively low thermal conductivity (1.32–1.55 W m–1 K–1) is attained in the nanobulk made of PVP-modified nanoparticles, and values of ZT in the range of 0.24–0.37 are realized at temperatures ranging from 50 to 200 °C. Our researches set forth a new avenue in promoting practical applications of Sb2Te3-based thermoelectric power generation or cooling devices.

2D layered Sb 2 Te 3 has emerged as a promising material for thermoelectric and optoelectronic applications. However, fabricating single-crystalline Sb 2 Te 3 flakes with the desired size, shape, and orientation remains challenging due to limited understanding of their growth mechanisms. In this study, how the substrate, growth time, carrying gas, and its flow rate influence the growth behavior of Sb 2 Te 3 flakes through a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach combined with van der Waals epitaxy (vdWE) is elucidated. By fine-tuning these growth parameters, Sb 2 Te 3 flakes with controlled size, morphology, and crystal orientation on mica substrates are successfully achieved. Notably, a record-high anisotropy ratio in Sb 2 Te 3 flakes exceeding 10,000 is obtained. Photodetectors fabricated from these flakes demonstrate excellent optoelectronic performance, achieving a responsivity of 1.34 A W −1 , a large external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 332%, and a high external specific detectivity (D * ) of 1.38 × 10¹⁰ Jones under a light power density of 10 mW cm − 2 . Moreover, the device exhibits modulated photocurrent under pulsed light, suggesting potential applications in optoelectronic synapses. This work provides detailed insights into the controlled growth of single-crystalline Sb 2 Te 3 flakes, offering unprecedented opportunities for exploring their fundamental properties in the development of next-generation thermoelectric and optoelectronic devices.

An optimal structure design of the lattice mismatched GaInP/GaInAs/Ge solar cell with high photoelectric conversion efficiency was proposed. Two-dimensional Bi 2 Te 3 and Sb 2 Te 3 nanosheets were prepared by solvothermal synthesis method used as thermoelectric (TE) functional materials, which is further hybrid with high conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). TE film was then fabricated based on above materials. The power factor of the n -type TE film is 19.31 μW/mK 2 , and the power factor of the p -type TE film is 97.40 μW /mK 2 . The flexible TE device was integrated with flexible solar cell. Compared with the single photovoltaic (PV) cell, the efficiency of the as-prepared flexible integrated device measured under the AM1.5 illumination is significantly improved. The efficiency of the two parallel tests is increased from 27.26% and 26.59%, to 29.11% and 28.92%, respectively. The increasing ratio reaches 6.7%–8.8%.

Photodetectors based on two-dimensional (2D) materials are revolutionizing optoelectronics by enabling high sensitivity, ultrafast response, and broadband detection. However, standalone 2D materials often suffer from high dark current, slow response times, and limited light absorption. Here, we demonstrate a high-performance photodetector based on a Sb2Te3/MoSe2 van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction, leveraging the topologically protected surface states of Sb2Te3 and the strong light absorption of MoSe2. The built-in electric field at the heterojunction interface enhances charge separation, suppresses recombination, and significantly reduces dark current. As a result, the device exhibits a high detectivity of 5.14 × 1012 Jones, an exceptional photoresponsivity of 178 A W−1, and fast response times of 110 μs (rise) and 230 μs (fall) under 532 nm illumination at 1 V bias. Additionally, the heterojunction enables broadband photodetection spanning 532 to 1550 nm, making it suitable for optical communication and sensing applications. This work provides new insights into the integration of topological insulators with transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) to achieve next-generation optoelectronic devices with superior performance.

The heterostructures incorporated with two or more distinctive two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted great attention because they could give rise to enhanced property in comparison with their individual counterparts. Here, a water-assisted twostep rapid physical vapor deposition (rPVD) method was explored and used to synthesize Bi 2 Te 3 -Sb 2 Te 3 lateral heterostructures (LHS) successfully. The Bi 2 Te 3 -Sb 2 Te 3 LHS is in nearly uniform size, and grows along three particular orientations with the intersection angles of 120°. Interestingly, we found that the water molecules play a significant role in determining the growth orientation, namely whether it will grow along the vertical or lateral direction in 2D structure. Hence, a growth mechanism of LHS based on the water-assisted two-step rPVD was present, which can be used as a general strategy and extended to the growth of other 2D heterostructures or homostructures, such as SnS-SnSe LHS and SnS-SnS lateral homostructures. Furthermore, the second-harmonic generation intensity of the Bi 2 Te 3 -Sb 2 Te 3 LHS is much stronger than that of the Bi 2 Te 3 /Sb 2 Te 3 vertical heterostructures (VHS). This work opens a new approach for the synthesis of water-assisted lateral 2D heterostructures or homostructures and offers a new method to enhance the second-harmonic generation properties of topological insulating materials.

PbTe-based thermoelectric materials are promising for mid-temperature waste heat recovery, yet n-type PbTe underperforms its p-type counterpart. Herein, high-performance n-type PbTe is achieved through I/Ge co-doping and in-situ composite engineering with Sb 2 Te 3 prepared by melting combined spark plasma sintering. Sb 2 Te 3 alloying introduce in-situ formed Sb/Sb 2 Te 3 precipitates. Furthermore, iodine doping optimizes the carrier concentration to ∼3.4 × 10 19 cm –3 , boosting the room-temperature electrical conductivity to ∼1404 S cm −1 and yielding a high power factor of ∼17.4 μW cm −1 K −2 for the PbTe-Sb 2 Te 3 sample. Meanwhile, lattice thermal conductivity is synergistically suppressed to ∼0.37 W m –1 K –1 at 673 K through Ge-induced point defects/off-center anharmonicity and Sb/Sb 2 Te 3 precipitates. This synergistic strategy results in a peak ZT of ∼1.30 at 823 K and a high average ZT of ∼0.91 at 323–823 K. This work demonstrates that synergistic I/Ge co-doping and composite precipitation effectively enhance thermoelectric performance in n-type PbTe.

Decoupling the intrinsically coupled electrical and thermal transport remains a central challenge for achieving high-performance thermoelectrics. Herein, we report a defect-modulated transport-decoupling strategy in anisotropic Bi 2 Te 3 /Sb 2 Te 3 (BT/ST) heterojunction nanomaterials with silver nanowires. By guiding defect evolution at the BT/ST phase boundaries, nanopore-containing heterointerfaces are constructed. Combined spatially resolved EELS observations and HRTEM/IFFT suggest that nanopores are preferentially associated with dislocation-rich heterogeneous interfacial regions. These engineered nanopores and heterogeneous interfaces effectively suppress phonon transport, leading to an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of ∼0.13 W m –1 K –1 at 600K. Meanwhile, the two-dimensional nanoplate framework provides anisotropic transport characteristics, while silver nanowires provide additional conductive pathways and modify the interfacial electronic transport, enabling enhanced electrical conductivity while preserving a high Seebeck coefficient. As a result, the electrical and thermal transport processes are spatially regulated. The optimized BT/ST nanoheterojunctions containing 2 vol % AgNWs exhibits a peak ZT ⊥ of 0.74, corresponding to a substantial ∼174% enhancement compared with the pristine matrix. More importantly, the combination of suppressed phonon transport and preserved electrical transport parallel to the SPS pressing direction yields a high S ∥ of 169 μV K –1 and an outstanding peak ZT ∥ of 1.25 at 600 K. This work demonstrates that controllable nanopore construction and directional electrical pathway engineering are effective for realizing anisotropic carrier-phonon decoupling in high-performance thermoelectric materials.
