BACKGROUND With the rapid development of modern industry and agriculture, large amounts of sewage of various types are being discharged into water bodies every year, causing huge environmental pressure and posing a threat to organisms. Amongst different solutions to this problem, microalgae can remove pollutants including pesticides and antibiotics from water . In this work, an algal strain designated as Scenedesmus sp. TXH. was isolated from the Tangxun Lake Sewage Treatment Plant (Wuhan, China) and used to remove imidacloprid (IMI) from sewage. The removal efficiency, degradation products, removal of conventional contaminants [total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N), total dissolved phosphorus (TDP)], the biochemical response of the microalgae, and the effects of environmental factors such as light intensity and temperature were investigated. RESULTS The results showed that: (i) the highest IMI removal efficiency of ≈60% was achieved under 80 μmol m −2 s −1 at 25 °C; (ii) the removal of NH 4 + -N, TDP and TDN in the sewage reached 90%, 90% and 65%, respectively; (iii) there was a significant linear relationship between the concentration of total chlorophyll and the removal of IMI in the sewage; and (iv) finally, based on the analysis of degradation products by mass spectrometer, three potential IMI degradation pathways were proposed. CONCLUSION In summary, our results showed that Scenedesmus sp. TXH can remove IMI and conventional nutrients efficiently from sewage, implying a potential application in sewage treatment in the near future. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Ciprofloxacin (CIP) and oxytetracycline (OTC) are commonly detected antibiotic species in breeding wastewater, and microalgae-based antibiotic treatment technology is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective method for its removal. This study evaluated the effects of CIP and OTC on Scenedesmus sp . in the breeding wastewater tailwater and the removal mechanisms of antibiotics. The results showed that Scenedesmus sp could increase antibiotic tolerance by enhancing antioxidant system activity. Compared to CIP, Scenedesmus sp showed better performance for OTC removal, the removal efficiencies were 100%, 96.87%, 95.75%, 90.18% and 83.91% at 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5, and 10 mg L − 1 OTC, respectively. The removal routes indicated that CIP was mainly removed by biodegradation (38.88%) and photolysis (14.30%) whereas OTC was mainly removed by hydrolysis (43.47%) and biodegradation (33.45%). Product toxicity predictions showed that most of the degradation products of CIP and OTC were less toxic than their parent compounds, confirming the feasibility of microalgae biotreatment for antibiotic removal.

Cell wall disruption is an essential downstream processing step for improving the efficiency of lipid extraction from microalgae. Enzyme-assisted extraction of lipid from microalga Scenedesmus sp. with cellulase , xylanase and pectinase, using various parameters, such as enzyme concentration , temperature, pH and incubation time, was optimized by central composite design (CCD) coupled with response surface methodology (RSM). Both the lipid extraction from microalgae and the fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) production under optimal conditions showed a ∼twofold in the yields compared to the control group with no enzymatic treatment . SEM images, FTIR measurement, XPS and HPLC analysis showed that the enzymatic pretreatment caused significant alterations in the cell wall structure of microalgae. And the disruption of microalgal cell walls was primarily attributed to the breakage of β-glucosidic linkages in cellulose and hemicellulose . The study showed a promising approach can lead to an improvement in the lipid extraction yield from microalgae and further provide valuable information for the use of enzymes in microalgal processes.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in increasing the usage of iodinated contrast media (ICM), and thus an increase in the prevalence of ICM-contaminated wastewater. While ICM is generally safe, this has the potential to be problematic because as medical wastewater is treated and disinfected, various ICM-derived disinfection byproducts (DBPs) may be generated and released into the environment. However, little information was available about whether ICM-derived DBPs are toxic to aquatic organisms. In this study, the degradation of three typical ICM (iopamidol, iohexol, diatrizoate) at initial concentration of 10 μM and 100 μM in chlorination and peracetic acid without or with NH 4 + was investigated, and the potential acute toxicity of treated disinfected water containing potential ICM-derived DBPs on Daphnia magna , Scenedesmus sp. and Danio rerio was tested. The degradation results suggested that only iopamidol was significantly degraded (level of degradation >98%) by chlorination, and the degradation rate of iohexol and diatrizoate were significantly increased in chlorination with NH 4 + . All three ICM were not degraded in peracetic acid. The toxicity analysis results indicate that only the disinfected water of iopamidol and iohexol by chlorination with NH 4 + were toxic to at least one aquatic organism. These results highlighted that the potential ecological risk of ICM-contained medical wastewater by chlorination with NH 4 + should not be neglected, and peracetic acid may be an environment-friendly alternative for the disinfection of wastewater containing ICM.
