Dietary low-fishmeal (FM) have negative impacts on growth performance and metabolic responses in aquatic animals, while Schizochytrium limacinum have multiple benefits due to its rich contents of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). However, little information is available on the effects of S. limacinum on Pacific white shrimp ( Litopenaeus vannamei ) in a low-FM diet (LF). An 8-week feeding trial were used to investigate the impacts of S. limacinum on growth performance, as well as morphological changes, biochemical indicators, antioxidant capacity, and transcriptomic profiles of hepatopancreas in shrimp fed a low-FM diet. Compared to LF diet, 0.3% S. limacinum (LFLD) diet significantly decreased the specific growth rate (SGR), and did not affect the feed conversion rate (FCR) and weight gain rate (WGR); whereas 0.6% S. limacinum (LFHD) diet did not affect the SGR, FCR and WGR. Histological structures of hepatopancreas showed that LFLD and LFHD treatments reduced the number and size of secretory cells and increased the number of storage cells, compared to LF group. LFLD and LFHD diets significantly decreased the concentrations of triglyceride and total cholesterol, significantly increased the levels of glutathione peroxidase and total antioxidative capacity, while did not affect the levels of malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase. A total of 135 differential expression genes (DEGs) were identified in LFLD group and 108 DEGs were identified in LFHD group (both compared to LF group). Administration of S. limacinum altered the transcriptomic profiles, while LFHD induced a pattern similar to that of LF. LFLD and LFHD treatments mainly affected the 9 KEGG metabolic pathways, including “Arachidonic acid metabolism” and “Glutathione metabolism”. In conclusion, LFLD treatment impaired the growth performance of shrimp, while LFHD treatment did not affect it; and both treatments improved the morphological structure, lipid accumulation and antioxidant capacity of hepatopancreas.

Furan fatty acids (FuFAs) have been recognized as beneficial food ingredients to human health. Herein, a targeted quantitation approach by gas chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (GC-TQ/MS) was developed for the identification of FuFAs in common marine and other edible oils in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode without any isolation and enrichment. The limit-of-quantitation (LOQ, 0.6 pg) was determined under the optimized parameters in MRM mode. Identification of FuFAs in common edible oils demonstrated that marine fish oils were concentrated sources of 9-(3-methyl-5-pentylfuran-2-yl)nonanoic acid (9M5), 11-(3,4-dimethyl-5-propylfuran-2-yl)undecanoic acid (11D3) and 11-(3,4-dimethyl-5-pentylfuran-2-yl)undecanoic acid (11D5). However, FuFAs were not identified in common plant oils. Additionally, 11D5 was identified in the lipids of Schizochytrium limacinum at a comparable level with that in marine fish oil. We believe that this protocol could facilitate the qualitative and quantitative analysis of FuFAs in food and biological samples.

Tetracycline (TC) is the one of the largest used antibiotics and its resulting water environment pollution has received widespread attention. In this paper, biochar was prepared by using the defatted Schizochytrium limacinum (microalgae) residue as raw material and KHCO 3 as activator, and its adsorption properties for TC were investigated. The results showed that KHCO 3 -activation biochar possessed the developed hierarchical porous structure. The specific surface area was up to 2295.26 m 2 ·g −1 , which was 409.6-fold higher than the pristine biochar. When the mass ratio of the pristine biochar to KHCO 3 was 1:1, the as-prepared biochar displayed the best adsorption performance for TC. The pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics can better describe the kinetic experiment results. The maximum adsorption capacity was 1357.5 mg·g −1 , which was more favorable than other biochar derived from agricultural waste reported previously. The adsorption capacity was stable under different solution conditions, suggesting that the microalgae residue-based biochar has a promising application foreground in wastewater treatment.

Bioactive composite films have emerged as promising candidates for sustainable food packaging due to their multifunctional performance and environmental compatibility. In this study, a novel active packaging film (SL/CS) was developed by incorporating Schizochytrium limacinum (SL) oil-based Pickering emulsions, stabilized by soy protein isolate (SPI), into a chitosan (CS) matrix via a casting method. SL oil is a marine-derived bioactive lipid rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and antioxidant carotenoids. Its incorporation into the CS film increased the surface contact angle to 91.79° and reduced the water vapor permeability (WVP) to 1.354 × 10 −12 g·cm/cm 2 ·s·Pa, indicating improved moisture barrier capacity. Additionally, UV–vis analysis confirmed that the SL-10 % film effectively blocked UV light across 200–380 nm. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of the SL/CS film was 89.67 % at 10 % SL oil loading. Antibacterial assays revealed maximum inhibition zone diameters of 28.84 mm for S. aureus and 14.90 mm for E. coli , with corresponding growth inhibition rates reaching 95.19 % and 88.19 %. In strawberry preservation experiments, the SL/CS film extended the shelf life of strawberries by reducing weight loss and mitigating the loss of firmness and titratable acidity during storage. Therefore, the results of this work support the potential of SL/CS films as a natural and effective packaging material for postharvest fruit preservation.

Marine algae are important sources of biological substances. Polysaccharides and oil in algae have a broad range of biological activities. The aim of our study was to develop a novel method for the extraction of polysaccharides and oil from Schizochytrium limacinum by enzyme-assisted three-phase partitioning. S. limacinum was pretreated by protamex hydrolysis for 2 hr, at pH 3.0, temperature of 45°C, and enzyme concentration of 2.0%. Response surface was used to analyze the three-phase extraction and Box–Behnken design was employed to model algae oil and polysaccharides. The following optimal conditions were obtained by global optimization: 34% mass fraction of ammonium sulfate, 1:2.4 ratio of slurry to t -butanol, 41 min time, 40°C temperature, 35.69% oil yield, and 5.16% polysaccharides yield. The polysaccharides exhibited potential antioxidant activity in DPPH, ABTS, and reducibility assay. The results indicated that the algal polysaccharides may be used as a natural antioxidant in food. Practical applications The application on Schizochytrium limacinum is mainly to extract DHA, but the algal polysaccharide has not been used. Algae oil and polysaccharides are simultaneously extracted from S. limacinum by enzyme-assisted three-phase partitioning (EATPP). The results suggest the EATPP is a novel method to obtain simultaneously oil and polysaccharides.
