Synergistic removal of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) can be achieved using multifunctional catalytic membranes. In this work, CePO4 nanorods were loaded on the pore surfaces of SiC membranes to construct the CePO4/SiC-X catalytic membranes. The stacked nanorod structure of the CePO4 catalyst layer facilitates the diffusion of gases to the catalyst surface during reactions. Owing to the high specific surface area, rich surface acidity, and strong redox capacity, the CePO4/SiC-400 catalytic membrane exhibits the best ammonia-selective catalytic reduction (NH3–SCR) denitration activity, achieving >90% NO conversion at a temperature of 250–380 °C and negligible N2O byproduct. In addition, the CePO4/SiC-400 catalytic membrane demonstrates excellent H2O and SO2 resistance. The performance of dust filtration and simultaneous dust filtration and denitration at 250–350 °C proposed that the dust rejection efficiency reached more than 99% at various conditions, and the dust filtration process did not affect the NH3–SCR performance of the CePO4/SiC-400 catalytic membrane. From the above results, the CePO4/SiC-400 catalytic membrane presents a broad application prospect in the simultaneous dust removal and denitration of high-temperature flue gas.

Ceramic membranes with tailored surface wettability have gained increasing attention for improving their separation efficiency and antifouling ability, while most of the previous work focused on the underwater oleophobic behavior. In this work, in-air highly oleophobic and hydrophilic SiC membranes were achieved through the UV irradiation triggered polymerization and controlled crosslinking between oleophobic perfluorodecyl acrylate (TFOA) and hydrophilic methacrylic acid (MAA). These key processing parameters including MAA content, soaking time and irradiation duration were systematically studied through examining the changes in porous microstructure, surface wettability and separation performance in oil-in-water emulsion. Results showed that the flux attenuation rate of SiC membranes can be effectively reduced by regulating the content of hydrophilic components. Due to the alternation of the surface wettability to highly oleophobic in air, the oil droplets can hardly attach on the surface of modified SiC membranes at the beginning of filtration process, and the membrane fouling was significantly slow down yet dominated by the intermediate blocking. Correspondingly, a combined cleaning procedure was proposed to regenerate the fouled SiC membranes. Further, the antifouling ability of modified and original SiC membranes was comparatively studied under the conditions of a fixed permeate volume (15 ml) and various oil concentrations (200 ∼ 1000 ppm) in the separation of oil-in-water emulsion. The advantages of modified SiC membranes become more notable when used for highly concentrated oil–water emulsion as reflected by the slower flux decline and higher stable flux. This work provides a feasible pathway to realize the in-air highly oleophobic and hydrophilic surface on ceramic membranes, and primarily demonstrates the advantages of antifouling ability in oil-in-water emulsion separation.

Cordierite-bonded porous SiC membrane supports with diatomite as silicon source were prepared in air at 1150–1400 °C via reaction bonding technique. The phase composition, microstructure, flexural strength , open porosity, pore size distribution as well as dielectric properties of membrane supports were investigated as a function of the mass ratio of different starting materials, sintering temperature , graphite content and holding time. It was found that the diatomite addition strongly promoted the phase transformation towards cordierite, meanwhile, due to the enhancement of necks at the contacting pionts growth by the additions of diatomite (5.17 wt%), a high three-point flexural strength of 49.19 MPa was achieved at an open porosity of 37.72% sintered at 1250 °C for 3 h. Meanwhile, the cordierite structure can incorporate of diatomite (like Fe 2 O 3 ) by solid solution formation, which can highly enhance on the electrical properties of cordierite-bonded SiC porous ceramics .

Airborne fine particles have severe effects on abating the duration and efficiency of filters due to their high penetration probability. One-dimensional (1D) nanomaterials-constructed filters show great promise in efficient removal of fine particles. In this work, in situ growth of 1D nanostructure membrane without introducing a transition or sacrificial layer on large-pore SiC support was creatively developed. The controllable growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) can bridge a loose structure on the neighbored SiC particles. This CNTs-constructed hierarchical structure can significantly ameliorate the large pores of the SiC support (SiC pore size ∼32.9 μm, CNTs/SiC membrane pore size ∼15 μm). By adjusting the CVD parameters, different configurations of CNT membranes were controllably prepared, in which the special structure of the CNT membrane (S-CNTs/SiC) showed a comparatively higher gas permeance of ∼450 m3/(m2·h·kPa) and fine particle removal efficiency (99.48%). In addition, the S-CNTs/SiC membrane also showed a good long-term filtration performance for fine particles. This work provides a new insight into the preparation of a 1D nanostructure membrane on large-pore ceramic supports high-efficient removal of fine particles.

Superhydrophobic-superoleophilic ceramic membranes with chemical, thermal and mechanical robustness are promising for efficient water-in-oil emulsion separation. Here, we report a facile approach to fabricate superhydrophobic-superoleophilic SiC membranes via ZnO nanosphere (NS) deposition and n-octyltriethoxysilane surface grafting. ZnO NSs were grown onto SiC grains by chemical solution deposition method to form micro-nano hierarchical structures for the membrane surfaces. By tuning the precursor concentration, the surface structures of SiC-25, SiC-50 and SiC-75 membranes (C(Zn 2+ ) = 25, 50 and 75 mM) were tailored with the increasing density of ZnO NSs. We found that the surfaces of SiC-50 and SiC-75 membrane were superhydrophobic-superoleophilic. Compared with pristine and simply grafted SiC membranes, the three SiC membranes with ZnO NS and grafting modification displayed excellent water rejection (>99.0%) and superior oil flux. The SiC-50 membrane displayed the optimal performance with steady-state flux was up to ~1000 L m -2 h -1 under 1 bar for 500 ppm water-in-hexane emulsion. The effects of surface structure and wettability on water-in-oil emulsion separation performance is revealed. We also confirmed the stability of the superhydrophobicity for the SiC-75 membrane. This work offers new insights into constructing robust superhydrophobic-superoleophilic ceramic membranes for high-performance water removal from oil products.
