Membrane distillation (MD) is considered a promising technology for desalination. In the MD process, membrane pores are easily contaminated and wetted, which will degrade the permeate flux and salt rejection of the membrane. In this work, SiC ceramic membranes were used as the supports, and an Al2O3micro-nano structure was constructed on its surface. The surface energy of Al2O3@SiC micro-nano composite membranes was reduced by organosilane grafting modification. The effective deposition of Al2O3nanoflowers on the membrane surface increased membrane roughness and enhanced the anti-fouling and anti-wetting properties of the membranes. Simultaneously, the presence of nanoflowers also regulated the pore structures and thus decreased the membrane pore size. In addition, the effects of Al2(SO4)3concentration and sintering temperature on the surface morphology and performance of the membranes were investigated in detail. It was demonstrated that the water contact angle of the resulting membrane was 152.4°, which was higher than that of the pristine membrane (138.8°). In the treatment of saline water containing 35 g/L of NaCl, the permeate flux was about 11.1 kg⋅m−2⋅h−1and the salt rejection was above 99.9%. Note that the pristine ceramic membrane cannot be employed for MD due to its larger membrane pore size. This work provides a new method for preparing superhydrophobic ceramic membranes for MD.

High-temperature filtration is an energy-saving and efficient technology for treating high-temperature dusty exhaust, while most of the current studies focus on the design and preparation of high-temperature filtration materials and their application in room-temperature filtration. In this work, SiC ceramic membranes were prepared as typical high-temperature filtration materials to systematically investigate the high-temperature filtration process at 25–400 °C. The experimental results show that the filtration temperature has a significant effect on both initial filtration and cake filtration processes. The increase of temperature results in an increase of gas viscosity, which contributes to the increase of the initial filtration pressure drop (ΔP0). Meanwhile, temperature can affect the forces on dust in the pore of the SiC membrane, and a higher temperature leads to the easy penetration of dust (especially for the ultrafine particles) through the membrane layer into the support body layer at the initial filtration process. Moreover, the higher temperature can reduce the porosity of the dust cake, leading to an increase in the cake pressure drop (ΔPc). All above results were further proved during the experiments on studying the effect of the filtration velocity, dust concentration, and regeneration on the filtration performance of SiC membranes at 25 and 300 °C. Through this work, we expect to shed some light on the design and preparation of high-temperature filtration materials and on the understanding of the high-temperature filtration process.

Brine purification process using ceramic membrane has the advantages of short process, high filtration precision, low cost and long life. Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic membranes are featured by excellent hydrophilicity and unique negatively charged surface. This work focused on the application of low-temperature reaction bonded SiC membranes in brine purification, and commercial SiC membranes prepared by the recrystallisation method were also adopted for comparison. Under low-energy conditions (transmembrane pressure ≤0.1 MPa, crossflow velocity ≤2 m·s -1 ), the low-temperature reaction bonded SiC membranes exhibited higher stable flux and superior antifouling performance (i.e., lower flux decline), attributed to the formation of a cake layer on the membrane surface. However, at high pressures (>0.1 MPa) and velocities (>2 m·s -1 ), some precipitated particles entered the pores of reaction bonded SiC membranes, resulting minor pore blockage, reducing permeability. Interestingly, the gradually increased initial permeate flux observed in cycling filtration was attributed to the increased surface hydrophilicity of SiC membranes. Therefore, low-temperature reaction bonded SiC membranes can provide a high-efficient and energy-saving brine purification process in the chlor-alkali industry.

In this work, TiO 2 nanocones grown on SiC membrane was used as the support of V 2 O 5 -WO 3 species to prepare V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 @SiC (VWTi(C-X)@SiC) catalytic membrane for dust filtration and NH 3 -SCR denitration. On account of the large specific surface area, abundant surface acid sites and prominent redox property, the optimized VWTi(C-550)@SiC catalytic membrane shows >90% NO removal efficiency at the temperature of 280–360 °C, which are much higher than VWTi(P-550)/SiC catalytic membrane (TiO 2 nanoparticles prepared by traditional vacuum coating titanium sol method was used as the support of V 2 O 5 -WO 3 species, NO conversion <80% at whole tested temperature). Additionally, VWTi(C-550)@SiC displays superior stability during the SO 2 + H 2 O resistance and 300 h long-term test at 300 °C, and exhibits an excellent dust filtration performance (2.5 μm SiO 2 particles interception rate exceeded 99.99%) under all test conditions. More importantly, the structure of nanocones decrease the influence of tensile stresses due to the different thermal expansion coefficients of TiO 2 and SiC membranes, which significantly suppress the fall of VWTi catalyst layer from the surface of SiC during pulse-jet cleaning. Among above results, it can be concluded that the optimized VWTi(C-550)@SiC catalytic membrane shows a prosperous application prospect for the simultaneously dust filtration and NH 3 -SCR denitration of medium–high temperature flue gas .

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic membrane supports, as critical components of ceramic membrane filters, must exhibit outstanding performance in mechanical properties, porosity, and chemical stability. In this study, MoO₃ was employed as a sintering aid, with SiC and α-Al₂O₃ serving as raw materials and walnut shell powder as a pore-forming agent. The effects of varying sintering temperatures (1250–1400°C) and MoO₃ contents on the properties of SiC porous ceramic membrane supports were systematically investigated. Special emphasis was placed on elucidating the mechanisms by which MoO₃ addition influences porosity, flexural strength, pore size distribution, and chemical stability. Experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of MoO₃ facilitates low-temperature sintering of SiC supports through a dissolution-precipitation mechanism. This process promotes the formation of mullite whiskers that reinforce interparticle necking regions while enhancing the uniformity of neck connections. Optimal performance was achieved at 1350°C with 8 wt% MoO₃ addition, yielding a bending strength of 37.01 ± 1.72 MPa, average pore size of 1.735 μm, most probable pore size of 1.7 μm, open porosity of 39.12 %, and exceptional corrosion resistance. This work establishes both theoretical foundations and practical strategies for low-temperature fabrication of high-performance SiC porous ceramics, while expanding the application potential of molybdenum-based sintering aids in structure-function integrated ceramic materials.

High-purity SiC ceramic membrane has gained tremendous attention in the treatment of various corrosive wastewaters. Additive manufacturing technique makes it possible to fabricate high-purity SiC ceramic membrane with complex configurations. Here, we proposed a route for the preparation of high-purity SiC ceramic membrane support using digital light processing and SiC whisker reinforcement. With the increase of whisker content, the viscosity of SiC w /SiC photosensitive slurry increased due to the formation of whiskers agglomerations; the average pore size shifted from 3.15 μm to 1.35 μm with the occupation of large pores by SiC whiskers. In addition, the compressive strength of the ceramic support increased from 10.7 MPa to 16.7 MPa because of the decline in pore size and the toughening effects by SiC whiskers. So, the introduced SiC whiskers enhanced the pore connectivity and mechanical strength of the porous ceramics. This work provides a feasible path to manufacture high-purity SiC ceramic membrane support with complex configuration, high pore-connectivity and excellent mechanical properties.

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic membranes fabricated by recrystallization sintering can be used in some harsh environments because of their remarkable chemical and thermal stabilities. However, the commercial membranes can only meet the demands of microfiltration applications because of the challenge in pore-size control during recrystallization sintering. Here, a SiC ultrafiltration membrane with triple-layer asymmetric structures was prepared with micro-scale SiC particles for the substrate and nano-scale SiC particles for the selective layer. Defects-free selective layers were successfully coated on the high-purity SiC substrate by spin coating. The average pore size of the membrane was 60 nm when sintered at 1300 ℃. The surface roughness of the membrane increased with the increase in sintering temperature, leading to the improvement in hydrophilicity. Oil-in-water emulsion filtration analysis found that the oil rejection of the membrane exceeded 99.9 %. Thus, this SiC UF membrane provides new possibility to treat the corrosive and oily wastewaters.

Engineering of superhydrophobic-superoleophilic (SHB-SOL) ceramic membrane surface with hierarchical structures remains challenging and the relation between physicochemical structure-dependent wettability and separation performance lacks investigation. Herein, SHB-SOL SiC ceramic membranes with different hierarchical micro-nano structures were fabricated by ZnO nanoflower (NF) deposition and silane grafting. Three SiC ceramic membranes with different pore sizes were purposefully used as the pristine, these membranes displayed similar geometric structures in different scales. The modified SiC membrane surface becomes stronger in SHB-SOL property as the pore size decreases and the optimal membrane possessing the lowest pore size presented a water contact angle of 172.46° and a water sliding angle of 5°. When used for pure oil or oily mixture separation, all the SHB-SOL SiC membranes exhibited enhanced oil fluxes compared with their pristine forms. At a pressure of 0.5 bar, the optimal membrane could completely reject water droplets and graphite solids (D 50 =4.8 µm) for the oil-water-solid mixture containing 0.05 wt% water and 0.05 wt% graphite, showing a stable oil (hexane) flux of 1383.8 L·m −2 ·h −1 . This work also reveals the effects of the hierarchical structures on the SHB-SOL property formation and the resulting antifouling mechanism, which offers novel insights into boosting ceramic membranes with desired surface wettability for enhanced separation performance.

To endow SiC ceramic membranes a catalytic self-cleaning capability, a pore-functionalized SiC ceramic membrane with impregnated a perovskite-type catalyst La 0 · 8 Mn 0 · 2 FeO 3 was fabricated by a urea-assisted one-step combustion method. Diffraction of X-ray (XRD), canning electronic microscopy (SEM) with an energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to investigate the effects of the impregnating of La 0 · 8 Mn 0 · 2 FeO 3 on SiC membrane pore-structure (La 0 · 8 Mn 0 · 2 FeO 3 -CM). The catalytic self-cleaning performance of the as-prepared membranes was assessed through peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation under a cross-flow filtration mode. Results indicate that La 0 · 8 Mn 0 · 2 FeO 3 has been successfully impregnated into the macropores of SiC membranes without pore blocking, and 92.4 % of the flux recovery rate (FRR) was achieved when the PMS concentration was 70 mM and catalytic flushing time was 45 min. Therefore, the La 0 · 8 Mn 0 · 2 FeO 3 impregnated SiC membrane exhibited excellent catalytic self-cleaning property, which can effectively avoid the environmental pollution and the deterioration of membrane materials caused by chemical cleaning for membrane fouling . In addition, the radical quenching experiment and electron spin resonance (EPR) tests were conducted in the catalytic self-cleaning process, and the results suggested that the hydroxyl radical (⋅OH) and sulfate radical (SO 4 • ‾) are simultaneously captured and ⋅OH is the dominant active species. This study embarks on a novel and environmental friendly membrane cleaning approach for irreversible fouling eliminates in diverse membrane separation applications.
