In this work, we fabricated a new type of Pd/SiO2@ZIF-8 core–shell catalyst composed of a Pd/SiO2 microsphere as the core and a ZIF-8 membrane as the shell. The preparation procedure involves first loading Pd nanoparticles onto nonporous SiO2 microspheres to obtain the Pd/SiO2 core and then coating a perfect layer of ZIF-8 shell on the core by electrostatic induction to form a Pd/SiO2@ZIF-8 core–shell structure. It is crucial that the modification of the Pd/SiO2 core with polyelectrolyte was employed to improve the charge distribution of the core surface and preferably adsorb Zn2+ cations in the synthesis solution so as to assist the formation of a continuous ZIF-8 shell. The compactness and thickness of the shell were optimized by increasing the number of cycles of ZIF-8 growth. The hydrogenations of alkenes with different molecular sizes showed that the Pd/SiO2@ZIF-8 catalysts can provide excellent product selectivity and antipoisoning and antileaching properties for the hydrogenations of alkenes.

Nowadays, modern industries are rapidly developing, which is caused by a significant amount of high-temperature exhaust gases in the atmosphere, and it contains complex pollutants, formaldehyde, solid particles, and harmful gases that are discharged. For this scenario, the conventional filtering materials are challenged for prevention of high-temperature exhaust gas formaldehyde volatilization because they are composed of metal and inorganic materials caused by oxidation-prone and resilient wear. A recently introduced technique to fabricate composite nanofiber membranes with high strength, modulus, efficiency, low resistance for high-temperature exhaust gas filtering, and its capability to adsorb formaldehyde was discussed in this study. Initially, Polyamide acid (PAA) solution and silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) nanomicrospheres are used as raw materials for producing electrostatic and thermal imidization Polyimide (PI/SiO 2 ) nanofiber membranes (NFMs) in co-spinning processes. Furthermore, zeoliticimidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was transferred into PI/SiO 2 NFMs and produced the PI/SiO2@ZIF-8 NFM. These findings show that adding SiO 2 nanomicrospheres reduced the fiber packing density as well as air filtration resistance, and PI/SiO2@ZIF-8 NFMs achieve up to 99.703% filtration efficiency and maintain a pressure drop of 178.7 Pa. The weight loss rate is only 4% at temperatures above 300 °C, and the heat resistance is outstanding. Moreover, the PI/SiO2@ZIF-8 NFMs demonstrate a good formaldehyde adsorption performance with a saturation adsorption capacity for formaldehyde within 4 hours of 41.58 mg/g, which is more than 12 times that of the PI/SiO2 NFMs without ZIF-8.

A simple strategy to fabricate a fluorescent SiO2@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) core–shell nanosensor for Cu2+ detection was demonstrated in this work. The nanosensor was synthesized using carboxyl-functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) as a template to induce the growth of ZIF-8 on its surface. The porous SiO2@ZIF-8 exhibited extremely good adsorption properties and a large specific surface area to accumulate Cu2+, and the pyridyl nitrogen sites in imidazole played vital roles in the recognition of Cu2+. The fluorescent intensity decreased linearly with the increasing of Cu2+ concentration in the range of 10–500 nM and the detection limit was estimated to be 3.8 nM. The SiO2@ZIF-8 nanosensor could be further used to determine trace amounts of Cu2+ in real water samples, while some previous sensors had to be dispersed in organic solution for use, such as DMSO and MeCN. The core–shell nanostructures of SiO2@ZIF-8 made it possible for it to be dispersed directly in aqueous solution and prevented ZIF-8 from aggregation, which enhanced the sensing performance of the SiO2@ZIF-8 nanosensor.

The frequent spills of offshore oil pose a great threat to the ecological environment and human health. Therefore, developing an adsorption material that is efficient, environmentally friendly, and easy to operate in complex environments to replace traditional technologies with low efficiency has become a major challenge in the field of oil-water separation. In this work, a green and superhydrophobic melamine sponge was first developed, inspired by lotus leaves. Then, a core-shell structure of inorganic metal oxide @ metal-organic framework (SiO 2 @ZIF-8) was synthesized by a simple sol-gel method. Finally, the structure was anchored onto the melamine sponge using low-surface-energy polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), forming a unique hierarchical micro-nano structure. The modified sponge exhibited excellent superhydrophobicity (water contact angle = 156°) and oil adsorption capacity (ranging from 58.5 to 114.3 g/g). It still exhibited perfect mechanical properties, hydrophobicity stability, and thermal stability even under prolonged high temperatures, strong acids/bases, and multiple cycles of extreme compression. Furthermore, the material also demonstrated remarkable flame retardancy, which significantly enhances the safety of the sponge in practical applications. This study provides an efficient and sustainable practical solution for responding to oil spills, with broad application prospects.
