Herein, a ball-milled composite mineral derived from shell powder and phosphate rock (BSPR) was innovatively coupled with smooth vetch (SV) planting to remediate Cd-polluted soil. The results showed that BSPR coupled with SV could reduce the bioavailability of Cd in soil by 68.1%, which was 2.2 and 3.4 times those of BSPR (31.1%) and SV (20.0%) alone, respectively. The outstanding passivation performance was confirmed to be due to the synergistic effect of BSPR and SV. Specifically, the employment of BSPR not only increased the biomass of SV but also promoted its decomposition, which directly led to the conversion of SV into more humic acid (HA). Under the action of HA, more calcium and phosphorus were released by BSPR and combined with Cd to form stable compounds (e.g., Cd3(PO4)2, Cd5(PO4)3Cl, and CdnCa5–n(PO4)3OH). Amazingly, due to the excellent performance of synergetic BSPR and SV on Cd passivation and soil improvement, the Cd content in pepper fruit decreased by 38.2% (6.3 times that of SV), and the fresh weight and Ca content of pepper fruit were enhanced by 28.2% and 43.4% (6.7 and 22.8 times that of SV, respectively). Overall, this study provided a novel strategy, i.e., green manure coupled with mineral, for simultaneous remediation of Cd-contaminated farmland and enhancement of pepper’s yield and quality, thus achieving “killing three birds with one stone”.

Herein, phosphorus/sulfur co-doped biochar (P/S-BC) coupled with smooth vetch (SV) as an innovative remediation strategy was proposed for the remediation of Cd-contaminated farmland. P/S-BC showed a high adsorption performance for Cd(II) and strong tolerance for the change of environmental pH, and the maximum uptake amount reached 204.26 mg/g. Furthermore, the bioavailability of Cd was significantly reduced by 37.27% with addition of 1.0% P/S-BC into soil for 20 days. Noticeably, when crushed fresh SV and 1.0% P/S-BC were applied to soil, the bioavailability of Cd in soil descended by 58.01%, meanwhile, the contents of soil organic matter (SOM) and available phosphorus (AP) in soil increased sharply, thereby improving the soil fertility. This double improvement was owing to that the application of P/S-BC could release more P through the action of organic acids produced by the decomposition of SV, which further bound with Cd to form stable compounds. The synergistic passivation mechanisms of SV + P/S-BC on Cd were surface chelation, precipitation, pore filling, and electrostatic interaction. Overall, this study proposed a promising strategy for achieving simultaneous remediation of heavy metals and supplement of nutrient to soil using heteroatom doped biochar coupled with green fertilizer.

Phosphorus-rich calcium-based bentonite (BM-PCB) was synthesized via a ball milling process and synergistically integrated with smooth vein (SV) to establish a coupled remediation system for Cd-contaminated soil. The combined application of BM-PCB and SV resulted in a 61.28% reduction in bioavailable Cd content, exhibiting 2.81- and 5.13-fold enhancements compared with those of BM-PCB (21.81%) and SV (11.94%) alone, respectively, confirming the existence of a strong synergistic passivation effect. BM-PCB enhanced the Cd enrichment capacity of SV by 2.83 times by promoting root development, subsequently increasing humic acid (HA) production by 33.33% by catalyzing the condensation reactions between phenolic compounds and amino acids following SV incorporation. The interaction between HA and BM-PCB enhanced Cd adsorption by improving the interlayer spacing, pore structure, functional group content, and charge characteristics of BM-PCB. Additionally, the beneficial microorganisms recruited by the coupling of BM-PCB and SV reduced Cd bioavailability as well as facilitated the decomposition and transformation of SV residues, thereby improving soil nutrients. This approach consequently increased the maize yield by 61.31% while concurrently reducing the Cd content in grains to comply with food safety standards. Life cycle assessment confirmed that the proposed BM-PCB+SV system represented a cost-effective and low-environmental-risk “three-in-one” strategy, simultaneously achieving Cd immobilization, soil fertility enhancement, and food security assurance.

Herein, an innovative coupling remediation system integrating a functionalized bacterial agent (BBC-BS) derived from bone char (BC) and Bacillus subtilis (BS) combined with smooth vetch ( Vicia villosa var.) (SV) was developed and applied to actual Cd-contaminated farmland soil. Results revealed that mechanical ball milling significantly enhanced the S BET of BBC-BS, refined its particle size, and modified its crystalline structure, enabling effective BS immobilization while providing a stable microenvironment. This optimization elevated the phosphate solubilization capacity, representing a 26.9% increase compared to free BS. The coupled BBC-BS+SV system exhibited dual synergistic effects during plant growth: (1) BBC-BS promoted SV growth, while (2) markedly suppressing Cd accumulation in SV. Furthermore, after 28 d of SV pressed into soil, the DTPA-extractable Cd content treated by BBC-BS+SV decreased by 53.1% compared to the control (CK), surpassing the combined remediation efficiencies of individual BBC-BS application and SV incorporation alone (37.3%). The application of BBC-BS not only stimulated SV biomass accumulation but also accelerated SV residue decomposition via functional microbiota activation, generating more low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) and humic acid (HA). Reciprocally, these products enhanced active sites on the BBC-BS surface, promoted Ca and P release from BBC-BS, and further strengthened Cd passivation. The coupled system ensured compliance with Cd residue standards in pepper while significantly improving fruit nutritional quality, achieving simultaneous soil remediation and safe crop production. This strategy provided a practical solution for Cd-contaminated farmland rehabilitation and sustainable enhancement of subsequent crop yield and quality.
