Despite the multiple advantages of high tissue penetration depth, selectivity, and noninvasiveness of photothermal-assisted antitumor synergistic therapy, developing photothermal agents with multifunctional characteristics, desirable tumor therapeutic effects, and biological stability remains a key challenge. Herein, an electronic structure-regulated strategy is proposed to activate self-adaptive Sn–Fe electron pair centers (Sn2+/Sn4+ and Fe2+/Fe3+) through loading the electron donor Pt (Pt/SFO-1, -2, -3, -4). Experimental and theoretical calculations indicate that abundant dynamic active centers can facilitate the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which enables Pt/SFO samples to possess catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and oxidase (OXD) enzyme-like activities. Upon near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, Pt/SFO-2 with a Pt load of 0.9% achieves the highest ROS production, showing a 9-fold compared with SnFe2O4 and implements the synergistic therapy of photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and chemodynamic therapy (CDT). The electronic state regulation of inorganic photothermal agents not only improves tumor therapeutic effects but also offers a novel strategy to regulate the electron structure of active centers.

The Sn-Fe alloy coating is a potential choice for decorative coatings and electronic products because of its excellent performance. However, oxidation of the bath is likely to occur in the process of use, which limits the production of electrodeposition of Sn-Fe alloy. Resveratrol has excellent antioxidant capacity and is considered as a non-polluting natural antioxidant. However, the understanding of using of resveratrol as stabilizer for electroplating solution in the field of electrodeposition is limited. In this study, resveratrol, hydroquinone and TBHQ are selected as the stabilizers of the electroplating bath to conduct comparative experiments for measuring the stability effect of resveratrol. The antioxidant capacities of three stabilizers are compared by means of the natural oxidation experiment, H 2 O 2 accelerated oxidation experiment and electrochemical testing. The natural oxidation experiment and H 2 O 2 accelerated oxidation experiment confirm that the antioxidant effect of resveratrol is higher than hydroquinone and TBHQ. To determine the optimal concentration of resveratrol in the electroplating solution, EIS and salt spray test were conducted. These results show that appropriate resveratrol can improve the corrosion resistance of the coating, but excessive resveratrol is detrimental to corrosion resistance. Therefore, the optimal concentration of resveratrol in the electroplating solution is 1.0 g/L.

Hybrid flow batteries are one of the most promising technologies for storing the electricity generated from intermittent renewables , such as wind and solar. However, most of the existing hybrid systems currently suffer from low power density and poor cycle performance resulted from the parasitic reactions. To mitigate these issues, here we report a tin-iron hybrid flow battery in which the stannous chloride anolyte is separated from the ferric/ferrous chloride catholyte. With the reversible tin metal deposition/stripping and ferric/ferrous chloride redox reactions at carbon surfaces , the present battery delivers an energy efficiency of 78.5% even at the current density of 200 mA cm −2 . In addition, owing to high hydrogen overvoltage of metallic tin, the parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction in the negative electrode can be largely avoided so that the battery can stably operate over 700 cycles without obvious efficiency decay. With the excellent rate and cycle performance, it is envisioned that the tin-iron flow battery is a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage applications .

Component materials and flow fields are key design parameters that influence the advection-diffusion-reaction process and thereby the performance of a Sn–Fe hybrid flow battery . In this work, various electrode configurations (empty chamber and porous carbon-based electrodes), membranes (cation and anion conducting) and flow fields (serpentine and interdigitated) are systematically investigated to elucidate their effects on the unique charge/discharge behaviors of the Sn–Fe flow battery with tin metal plating/striping. It is found that the battery capacity roughly increases linearly with the porosity of the porous electrode especially at low current densities , and a highly porous electrode (graphite felt) is more desirable than an empty chamber configuration in terms of capacity and power density. In addition, as compared to cation exchange membrane (Nafion 212), the anion exchange membrane (Fumasep FAP-450) exhibits improved capacities and columbic efficiencies in sulfuric acid-based electrolytes at low current densities due to the reduction of cation crossover. Interestingly, it is showed that although a serpentine flow field and a low flow rate generally lead to poor battery performance, they tend to ameliorate the maldistribution of plated tin at the negative electrode owing to the restricted mass transfer of reactants.

As global energy demand continues to grow, developing scalable and efficient energy storage systems with high energy density becomes increasingly critical. This study addresses these needs by exploring the use of mixed-acid electrolytes and premixed configurations in Sn-Fe redox flow batteries. We demonstrate significant improvements in solubility, electrochemical stability, and cycling durability. Specifically, incorporating sulfate ions into the electrolyte mitigates the common-ion effect, greatly increasing the solubility of ferrous and stannous chlorides and enabling higher energy densities of 24.22 Wh·L −1 at 80 mA cm −2 under room temperature. Electrochemical analyses reveals that sulfate ions positively shift the Sn 2+ /Sn redox potential by 120 mV at the negative side and also expand the operational voltage window beyond 1.44 V vs. SHE at positive side, significantly reducing undesirable side reactions such as chlorine evolution. Sulfate-rich electrolytes maintain superior stability, achieving coulombic efficiencies above 98 % under diverse operating temperatures. Additionally, a novel hydrogen-Fe 3+ rebalancing method is developed to effectively address Fe 3+ accumulation, restoring battery capacity from near depletion to around 15 Wh·L −1 . These findings underline the potential of mixed-acid premixed electrolyte systems and hydrogen-mediated rebalancing as robust strategies for advancing high-performance, scalable, and sustainable aqueous energy storage solutions.

Rutile Sn-Fe-TiO 2 photocatalysts with high visible-light-driven activity were synthesized by an improved soft chemical solution process for investigating the potential correlation between their photocatalytic performance and coordination structure. The prepared photocatalysts were systematically characterized by XRD, BET, Raman, TEM, UV–vis, XPS, XAFS and Mössbauer techniques. Their photocatalytic performances were evaluated by degrading the model pollutant of methylene blue aqueous solution under visible light irradiation ( λ ≥ 400 nm). The results indicated that tin and iron ions could substitute Ti 4+ in the rutile TiO 2 lattice, and specially, iron ions were located at tetrahedrally coordinated titanium sites. Their visible-light-driven photocatalytic activities were found to culminate at a very low level of iron doping (Fe/Ti = ∼0.1 at.%, Sn/Ti = 2.0 at.%), this was 5-fold of P25 and 2-fold of undoped rutile TiO 2 . It was confirmed that besides the high surface area, fine crystallinity, enhanced visible light absorption and optimized oxygen vacancy concentration, the mole ratio of tetrahedrally coordinated iron and titanium was also essential to modify their visible-light-driven photocatalytic properties.

Ni–M/SiO2 with different binary metals M (M = Ce, Co, Sn, Fe) prepared by an incipient impregnation method was used in the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of low-temperature coal tar distillate, which is rich in phenolic compounds. p-Cresol, as a model compound of the distillate, was used to evaluate the activity and selectivity of BTX products on the series of reduced Ni–M/SiO2 catalysts in a fixed bed reactor. The properties of the catalysts were characterized by N2 adsorption–desorption, ICP-AES, XRD, H2-TPR, and XPS. Benzene and toluene as the direct deoxygenation (DDO) products and cyclohexane and methylcyclohexane as the hydrogenolysis (HYD) products were detected to evaluate the selectivity of the path in the deoxygenation process. In this series of catalysts, the order of reactivity was Ni–Ce > Ni–Sn > Ni–Co > Ni–Fe > monometallic Ni. Meanwhile, the addition of Ce and Co loaded in the Lewis acid sites of the catalyst affected the electron distribution of nickel atom and its atomic arrangement on the surface of the carrier. Compared to monometallic Ni, the DDO path become dominant on Ni–Ce and Ni–Co and the selectivity for BTX products increased from 58.8% to 77.4% and 71.1%, respectively. The binary metal Sn, unlike the former two metals, formed a Ni3Sn crystal form with Ni, which resulted in significant enhancement of the HYD path while obviously increasing the reactivity.

Developing cost-effective, high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for advanced clean energy technologies. This work details Sn–Fe bimetallic nanoparticles anchored on S,N-codoped graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4)-derived tubular carbon (SnFe/SNC_T), which are synthesized via a facile pyrolysis method at 850 °C (SnFe/SNC_850). The optimized SnFe/SNC_850 catalyst, which is characterized by a distinct bamboo-like tubular morphology, demonstrates superior ORR activity with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.86 V vs RHE in 0.1 M KOH, surpassing commercial Pt/C (0.82 V). Furthermore, it exhibits excellent OER performance, requiring only 340 mV overpotential to achieve 10 mA cm–2, and displays remarkable overall bifunctionality. When SnFe/SNC_850 is integrated into an anion exchange membrane fuel cell (AEMFC), it delivers a peak power density of 277 mW cm–2, significantly outperforming Pt/C-based cells (168 mW cm–2). The catalyst also demonstrates exceptional durability, with only 20 mV of E1/2 decay after 30,000 cycles, compared to 50 mV for Pt/C. This enhanced performance is attributed to the synergistic interplay between Fe–Nx/Fe–Sx active sites and intermetallic Fe3SnC/FeS domains. These findings establish SnFe/SNC_850 as a highly promising nonprecious-metal bifunctional electrocatalyst for practical energy-conversion applications, paving the way for sustainable clean-energy solutions.

For the mono-metal Pd based catalysts, the O–O bond in O2 and H2O2 is easily dissociated due to the higher energy sites of Pd, which decreases the selectivity and productivity of H2O2. To address this issue, non-noble metals M (M = Sn, Fe, Co, Ni) were doped into palladium precursors to create a series of yolk–shell structure bimetallic catalysts Pd–M@HCS (H = hollow; C = carbon; S = sphere) with Pd–M as the core and porous carbon as the shell. The results indicated that the catalyst Pd–M@HCS doped with Sn, Fe, Co, and Ni has a weak dissociation ability for O2, and both the adsorption and dissociation ability for H2 are improved. Of these catalysts, the catalyst Pd–Sn@HCS gives the best performance, which is benefited by the suitable Pd–Sn nanoparticle size and the best Pd2+/Pd0 ratio. The influence of the nPd/nSn ratio in the Pd–Sn@HCS system on catalyst performance was further explored, and the findings revealed that Pd–Sn@HCS had the best catalytic activity and stability when the nPd/nSn ratio was 2. The catalyst's H2 conversion, H2O2 selectivity, and productivity were 35%, 97%, and 3961 mmol gPd−1 h−1, respectively. After 10 cycles, the H2O2 productivity of this catalyst remained at 92.1%, which was greater than the H2O2 productivity of the typical Pd-based catalyst Pd/C, which stayed at 37% under the same conditions.
