Adjusting Microstrain via Interface Engineering for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Xian Xie,Wei Zhang,Yanzhuo Gou,Pan Deng,Kai Zhang,Shihao He,Jinhua Li,Sujuan Hu,Xianbao Wang,Liangyou Lin

The presence of strain can affect the performance of perovskite solar cells, but strain is often unavoidable in the preparation of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, 4,5-dichloroaniline-2-sulfonic acid (DCSA) served as a passivator to treat the SnO2 electron transport layer, which led to a reduction of trap states in the SnO2 film and enhanced the energy level alignment between the SnO2 and perovskite layer. The −Cl in DCSA effectively interacts with the uncoordinated Sn4+ that fills the oxygen vacancy sites on the surface of SnO2. Meanwhile, the −SO3H functional group in DCSA interacts with the uncoordinated Pb2+ in perovskite, thus retarding the nonradiative recombination process. These interactions eventually contribute to the decrease in lattice strain within the device. The optimized device achieved a champion power conversion efficiency of 23.32% and retained above 90% of its initial PCE value after 1032 h of storage under ambient conditions without encapsulation.

Solvent engineering of SnO2 ETL for enhanced performance of carbon-based CsPbIBr2 PSCs

Du Tianheng,Jin Liguo

This study thoroughly investigates the effects of different solvent engineering strategies on the structure and properties of SnO 2 electron transport layers (ETLs) and evaluates their performance-enhancing effects on carbon-based all-inorganic CsPbIBr 2 perovskite solar cells (PSCs). By comparing the SnO 2 ETLs prepared with ethanol (ET-SnO 2 ) and isopropanol (IPA-SnO 2 ) solvents and constructing corresponding CsPbIBr 2 PSCs devices, we comprehensively analysed the structure, morphology, wettability, light transmittance and electronic transport properties of the SnO 2 ETLs using characterization methods such as XRD, SEM, contact angle measurement, transmission spectroscopy, steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Combined with the J-V characteristics of the device, we revealed the mechanism of the effect of solvent engineering on the performance of PSCs. The results showed that IPA-SnO 2 exhibited better performance with lower contact angle and higher compactness, which is conducive to electron transport and reduces interfacial defects. IPA-SnO 2 also promoted the growth of CsPbIBr 2 crystals, forming larger and denser crystal structures and reducing pinhole defects. In addition, IPA-SnO 2 improves the light transmittance of the FTO substrate and the light absorption of the CsPbIBr 2 film, thereby increasing the light trapping efficiency. Finally, the IPA-SnO 2 -based PSCs achieved a PCE of 5.95%, an improvement of 25% compared to ET-SnO 2 , demonstrating good application prospects. This study provides an important experimental basis for optimizing the preparation process of SnO 2 ETL and improving the performance of carbon-based CsPbIBr 2 PSCs. Graphical

Two Birds with One Stone: Minimizing Voltage Deficit via Three Moieties of F, COOH, and NH2 of Carbon Dots Modifying the SnO2 Electron Transport Layer and Buried Interface for Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells

Dongxue Fan,Kai Cui,Yang Li,Caiqin Miao,Qun Wang,Xiaohong Wu

Flexible perovskite solar cells (F-PSCs) have demonstrated remarkable potential for next-generation wearable platforms. Nonetheless, the reduction of open-circuit voltage (VOC) at the interface within F-PSCs poses a significant barrier to improving the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE). Herein, we reported an effective “two birds with one stone” strategy by utilizing carbon dots (CDs) as a multifunctional treatment modulator to modify the SnO2 electron transport layer (ETL) and buried interface. On the one hand, CDs were explored to passivate trap states associated with Sn dangling bonds and oxygen vacancies on SnO2 surfaces through Lewis acid–base coordination, thereby enhancing the electron mobility of SnO2 films and facilitating charge extraction from perovskite layers. On the other hand, the functional groups (including carboxyl, fluorine, and amino) on CDs enable the formation of coordination and hydrogen bonding with PbI2, promoting the formation of high-quality perovskite films with reduced defect densities. The collective enhancements effectively mitigate trap-assisted charge recombination and interfacial energy loss, significantly reducing the device voltage deficit and enabling F-PSCs to attain a PCE of 22.97% with enhanced VOC from 1.06 to 1.18 V. Notably, CDs-incorporated devices demonstrate exceptional operational durability, maintaining 83% of initial PCE after 400 h of continuous illumination (AM 1.5G) in an air atmosphere and retaining 81% PCE following 4000 cyclic bending tests (6 mm radius). This methodology establishes a robust framework for simultaneously enhancing both the efficiency and stability in FAPbI3-based F-PSCs.

Yb-doped SnO2 electron transfer layer assisting the fabrication of high-efficiency and stable perovskite solar cells in air

Dixin Liu,Wenyuan Zhang,Ziqiu Ren,Xin Li

To date, most preparation processes of polycrystalline perovskite films still have to be performed in a glovebox filled with inert gas, limiting the application due to their high cost and complexity. In this work, we exploit a facile processing technique for the preparation of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) under ambient conditions by the Yb3+ doping effect for SnO2 electron transfer layer. This remarkable and facile interface doping strategy promotes all-air processed planar PSCs, giving enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 15.69% to 17.31% with a decreasing hysteresis effect. Moreover, the heating and illumination stability of modified devices by virtue of defect suppression located at electron transfer layer (ETL)/perovskite interface has been effectively improved, retaining over 85% of its initial PCE after 7 h heating at 100 °C in ambient condition and 85% of its initial PCE under 7 h continuous light illumination without any encapsulation. Therefore, it is believed that this Yb-doping strategy for SnO2 ETL can provide a novel way of promoting the efficiency and stability of devices prepared in the air.

Highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells based on E-beam evaporated SnO2 and rational interface defects passivation

Mengjia Li,Lihua Zhu,Xian Zhang,Chen Wang,Deyu Gao,Jiaheng Han,Chunlei Chen,Hongwei Song,Sai Xu,Cong Chen

Owing to the significant roles in balancing carrier transport, bandgap alignment, and perovskite crystallization, realizing high-quality electron transport layers (ETLs) and their effective electronic contact with the perovskite photoactive layer is crucial for future commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, a high-quality SnO 2 ETL is firstly deposited at room temperature via the low-cost electron beam evaporation (E-beam) technology to help achieve an impressive PCE of 18.88% for rigid PSCs and a PCE of 15.73% for flexible devices. Then we introduced a novel passivating ligand molecule, 11 Maleimidoundecanoic acids (11MA), to help induce functional defects passivation at the interface of SnO 2 /Perovskite to coordinate with Pb 2+ in perovskite and Sn 4+ in SnO 2 via the functional groups (-C = O, -COOH). As a result, 11MA could help achieve the best PCE of 20.94% with negligible hysteresis for rigid devices. Also, doping 11MA in the perovskite photoactive layer further enhanced the PCE to 22.08% with much improved 2000 hours ambient stabilities. Finally, we fabricated different large-area rigid devices (10, 40, 100, and 600 mm 2 ) toward speeding up the commercialization of PSCs by industrial E-beam technology and rational defects passivation strategies.

Interface Modification Using Li-Doped Hollow Titania Nanospheres for High-Performance Planar Perovskite Solar Cells

Caixiang Zhao,Junfeng Shu,Jiaqi Fang,Shuangxia Luo,Yanjun Guo,Peng Xu,Ji Feng,Meng He,Zhan’ao Tan,Xiong Yin,Leyu Wang

Titania nanospheres have been utilized as building blocks of electron transporting layers (ETLs) for mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Nevertheless, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) reported so far for the mesoscopic PSCs containing titania nanospheres are generally lower than those of the state-of-the-art planar PSCs. Here, we have prepared Li-doped hollow titania nanospheres (Li-HTS) through a “cation-exchange” approach and used them for the first time to modify the SnO2 ETL/perovskite interfaces of planar PSCs. The Li-HTS-modified PSC delivered a PCE of 23.28% with a fill factor (FF) of over 80%, which is significantly higher than the PCE of the control device (20.51%). This is the best PCE achieved for PSCs containing titania nanospheres. Moreover, interfacial modification using Li-HTS greatly improves the stability of the PSCs. This work demonstrates the potential of interface modification using inorganic nanostructures for enhancing the efficiency and stability of planar PSCs.

Dual-anchor interface engineering with a phosphonic acid modifier for improving perovskite solar cell performance

Wang Yao,Zijin Qiao,Zhirui Chen,Jiaqi Wang,Cheng Mu

Solution-processed planar SnO2 electron transport layers (ETLs) fabricated via sol–gel methods offer promising scalability for manufacturing perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, inherently, interfacial defects at both the SnO2 surface and the perovskite buried surface severely degrade device performance. Interface engineering of SnO2 ETLs using molecular modifiers presents a promising pathway toward high-performance PSCs. In this work, we propose a dual-functional interface engineering strategy employing aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), an amphiphilic molecule featuring complementary –NH2 and –PO3H2 functional groups, to simultaneously regulate charge transport dynamics and crystallization kinetics. The phosphonic acid group is firmly bound to the surface of SnO2, which effectively suppresses the surface carrier trap and leakage current and makes the surface potential uniform. At the same time, amino groups affect the growth of perovskite films, resulting in higher crystallinity, phase purity, and fewer defects. In addition, open-circuit photovoltage attenuation analysis (OCVD) tests show that the ion aggregation phenomenon of the device is weakened and ion migration is inhibited. TPC indicates a shortened recovery time constant, which may be due to reduced band bending at the interface, resulting in increased mobility of electron injection energy barriers. As a result, the PCE increased from 18.95 to 20.47% while exhibiting excellent stability.

All-Inorganic Perovskite Solar Cells with Tetrabutylammonium Acetate as the Buffer Layer between the SnO2 Electron Transport Film and CsPbI3

Hang Zhong,Wenbo Li,Yin Huang,Duoling Cao,Congqiang Zhang,Huaxi Bao,Zhiguang Guo,Li Wan,Xu Zhang,Xiuhua Zhang,Yuebin Li,Xiaoming Ren,Xianbao Wang,Dominik Eder,Kai Wang,Shengzhong Frank Liu,Shimin Wang

All-inorganic CsPbI3 perovskites have great potential in tandem cells in combination with other photovoltaic devices. However, CsPbI3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) still face a huge challenge, resulting in a low power conversion efficiency (PCE) relative to organic–inorganic PSCs. In this work, we introduced tetrabutylammonium acetate (TBAAc) as a buffer layer between the SnO2 electron-transport layer (ETL) and CsPbI3 all-inorganic perovskite film interface for the first time. TBAAc not only improved the conductivity of SnO2 ETL but also formed a 1D TBAPbI3 layer between the SnO2 ETL and the 3D CsPbI3 all-inorganic perovskite film, thereby enhancing the stability and passivating the surface defects of the CsPbI3 perovskite to fabricate high-efficiency carbon-counter electrode (CE)-based CsPbI3 solar cells. We fabricated carbon-CE-based hole-transporting layer ( HTL)-free PSCs with an FTO/SnO2/TBAAc/CsPbI3/C structure. The open-circuit voltage (Voc), short circuit current density (Jsc), PCE, and fill factor of the champion CsPbI3 PSCs simultaneously enhanced to 1.08 V, 17.48 mA/cm2, 12.79, and 67.8%, respectively. This PCE is currently one of the high efficiencies reported for the above planar-structured carbon-CE-based CsPbI3 PSCs to date. Moreover, the optimized device exhibits excellent stability, which retained over 83% of its initial PCE after 350 h. This work provides a facile way of simultaneous optimization of the SnO2 ETL and the CsPbI3 perovskite layer to fabricate stable and high-efficiency carbon-CE-based CsPbI3 PSCs.
