Oxygen-Vacancy-Rich SnO2 Nanoparticles Based Ultralow-Power MEMS Sensor for Nitrogen Dioxide Detection

Yong Yan,Xigui Lan,Yuzhou Li,Meihua Liang,Xiaodong Liu,Jiaxuan Yang,Rongrong Jia,Yuanyuan Ge,Zhili Li,Lei Huang

The development of highly sensitive and ultralow-power NO2 sensors is crucial for real-time NO2 monitoring. This study synthesizes tiny SnO2 nanoparticles with enriched oxygen vacancies for use in microelectromechanical system (MEMS) gas sensors, enabling ppb-level NO2 detection at reduced operating temperatures. PVP was used to adjust the particle size and surface oxygen vacancies in the hydrothermal method. The gas sensing performance shows that the 0.75 g PVP-SnO2 exhibited the highest response of 14.7 to 500 ppb NO2 at a low operating temperature of 102 °C, which is 3.2 times higher than that of the 0.00 g PVP-SnO2 sensor under the same conditions. Compared to similar studies, this sensor achieved a high response value and ultralow power consumption of 8.4 mW. The improvement in performance is mainly attributed to N doping and the abundance of oxygen vacancies. This research presents a promising strategy for the development of high-performance, low-energy, real-time NO2 gas sensors.

Guangkai Li,Haeseong Jang,Zijian Li,Jia Wang,Xuqiang Ji,Min Gyu Kim,Xien Liu,Jaephil Cho

For high-efficiency NH 3 synthesis via ambient-condition electrohydrogenation of inert N 2 , it is pivotal to ingeniously design an active electrocatalyst with multiple features of abundant surfacial deficiency, good conductivity and large surface area. Here, oxygen-deficient SnO 2 nanoparticles encapsulated by ultrathin carbon layer (d-SnO 2 @C) are developed by hydrothermal deposition coupled with annealing process, as promising catalysts for ambient electrocatalytic N 2 reduction. d-SnO 2 @C exhibits high activity and excellent selectivity for electrocatalytic conversion of N 2 to NH 3 in acidic electrolytes, with Faradic efficiency as high as 12.7% at −0.15 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and large NH 3 yield rate of 16.68 μg h −1 mg cat −1 at −0.25 V vs. RHE in 0.1 mol L −1 HCl. Benefiting from the structural superiority of enhanced charge transfer efficiency and optimized surface states, d-SnO 2 @C also achieves excellent long-term stability.

Investigation of Microstructure Effect on NO2 Sensors Based on SnO2 Nanoparticles/Reduced Graphene Oxide Hybrids

Ziying Wang,Tianyi Han,Teng Fei,Sen Liu,Tong Zhang

The microstructures of metal oxide-modified reduced graphene oxide (RGO) are expected to significantly affect room-temperature (RT) gas sensing properties, where the microstructures are dependent on the synthesis methods. Herein, we demonstrate the effect of microstructures on RT NO2 sensing properties by taking typical SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) embellished RGO (SnO2 NPs-RGO) hybrids as examples. The samples were synthesized by growing SnO2 NPs on RGO through hydrothermal reduction (SnO2 NPs-RGO-PR), which display the advantages such as high reactivity of the SnO2 surface with NO2, more oxygen vacancies (OV) and chemisorbed oxygen (OC), close contact between SnO2 NPs and RGO, and large surface area, compared to the samples prepared by one-pot hydrothermal synthesis from Sn4+ and GO (SnO2 NPs-RGO-IS), and the assembly of SnO2 NPs on RGO (SnO2 NPs-RGO-SA). As expected, the SnO2 NPs-RGO-PR-based sensor presents high sensitivity towards 5 ppm NO2 (65.5%), but 35.0% for the SnO2 NPs-RGO-IS-based sensor and 32.8% for the SnO2 NPs-RGO-SA-based sensor at RT. Meanwhile, the corresponding response time and recovery time calculated by achieving 90% of the current change of the SnO2 NPs-RGO-PR-based sensor for exposure to NO2 is 12 s and to air is 17 s, respectively, whereas 74/42 s for the SnO2 NPs-RGO-IS-based sensor and 77/90 s for the SnO2 NPs-RGO-SA-based sensor. The results can prove the tailoring sensing behavior of the gas sensor according to different structures of materials.

Cu-doped mesoporous SnO2 nanoparticles with rich grain boundaries and oxygen vacancies for photocatalytic CO2-to-CO conversion

Guohui Li,Pengyu Li,Zhi Ge,Dawei Yan,Wei Sun,Yuanyuan Sun,Xiaoxia Zhou

Photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide into fuels provides an effective approach to realize carbon resource utilization. However, the photocatalytic efficiency is still relatively low due to the recombination of photogenerated charges. Herein, we have designed Cu-doped SnO2 nanoparticles (Cu–SnO2) using a glucose-involved hydrothermal crystallization method for the photocatalytic reduction of CO2. The rich oxygen vacancies facilitated the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges, and the confined effect of the typical mesoporous structure promoted the adsorption of CO2, especially a high density of grain boundaries (GBs) and the doping of atomic Cu would introduce new active sites to activate CO2 molecules. This elaborately designed catalyst exhibited super and stable photocatalytic conversion activity of CO2-into-CO, with a CO optimal yield of 107 µmol g−1 in 4 h, which was 2.75 times that over pure SnO2. In situ Raman results indicated that the CO2 reduction reaction followed a *COOH pathway on Cu–SnO2. This work provides implications for the construction of a catalyst with rich defects in the field of energy and environmental catalysis.

One-step synthesis of SnO2 nanoparticles-loaded graphitic carbon nitride and their application in thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate

Qi Li,Yi He,Rufang Peng

SnO2 nanoparticle-loaded graphitic carbon nitride (SnO2NPs/g-C3N4) hybrids were successfully synthesized by one-pot calcination. Various characterization means and detection techniques were used to analyse their structure and properties. It was found that SnO2 NPs possess the synergistic effect on g-C3N4. The addition of SnO2 NPs not only increases the surface of g-C3N4 but provides extra electrons. Having added 10 wt% SnO2NPs/g-C3N4 hybrids, the onset decomposition temperature of ammonium perchlorate (AP) was decreased to 352.2 °C. Furthermore, considering the band gap of g-C3N4 (Eg = 2.7 eV) and SnO2 (Eg = 3.6 eV), the conduction band electrons (ecb− and valence band holes (h+)) were generated on their surface upon heat excitation. In addition, on the basis of the synergistic effect (the ecb− would transfer from g-C3N4 to SnO2) of SnO2, a possible synergistic mechanism was proposed to understand the thermal decomposition of AP.

Oxygen vacancy engineering for enhanced sensing performances: A case of SnO2 nanoparticles-reduced graphene oxide hybrids for ultrasensitive ppb-level room-temperature NO2 sensing

Ziying Wang,Tong Zhang,Tianyi Han,Teng Fei,Sen Liu,Geyu Lu

In this paper, SnO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) decorated reduced graphene oxide hybrids with abundant vacancies (designated as SnO 2 -RGO-OVs) have been successfully prepared by a combined hydrothermal synthesis and chemical solution deposition method. It is found that high density SnO 2 NPs with the size of 3–5 nm are uniformly distributed on the surface of RGO nanosheets. Most importantly, SnO 2 -RGO-OVs hybrids exhibit excellent room-temperature NO 2 sensing properties with the low detection limit of 50 ppb. When SnO 2 -RGO-OVs-based sensor was exposed to 1 ppm NO 2 , the response is 3.80 and response time and recovery time are 14 s and 190 s, respectively. These sensing performances are superior to those of most reported room-temperature NO 2 sensors based on RGO-based materials and other materials. The excellent sensing performances of SnO 2 -RGO-OVs hybrids can be attributed to their specific structure, e.g., RGO that could facilitate transferring carriers during sensing progress, and abundant OVs that could facilitate adsorption of more NO 2 molecules onto SnO 2 NPs in SnO 2 -RGO-OVs hybrids.

Fast and clean preparation of highly crystalline SnO2 nanoparticles incorporated in amorphous carbon, and its dye removal performance

Siyuan Li,Ali Reza Kamali

The thermal oxidation of molten SnCl 2 leads to the formation of SnO 2 nanocrystals of less than 50 nm in diameter at 600 °C. These nanoparticles grow to large crystals with sizes of up to 10 µm by increasing the heat-treatment temperature to 800 °C. The excessive growth of SnO 2 crystals can be prevented by the introduction of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and inorganic salts, through which SnO 2 @carbon nanocomposites could be prepared in a fast and clean way. Increasing the heat-treatment temperature from 600 to 800 °C leads to the enhancement of the crystalline quality of SnO 2 present in the nanocomposites, while the excessive crystal growth at high temperatures is prevented. A large number of highly-crystalline SnO 2 nanocrystals with sizes of less than 5 nm embedded in carbon substrate could be detected in the nanocomposite material prepared at 800 °C. The prepared sample exhibits an interesting combination of dye adsorption, with the capacity of 63 mg dye /g nanocomposite , as well as photocatalytic performance under normal sunlight irradiation toward the removal of methylene blue. This article suggests a clean and fast strategy for the preparation of highly crystalline SnO 2 - amorphous carbon nanocomposites.

High-performance reduced graphene oxide-based room-temperature NO2 sensors: A combined surface modification of SnO2 nanoparticles and nitrogen doping approach

Ziying Wang,Chen Zhao,Tianyi Han,Yong Zhang,Sen Liu,Teng Fei,Geyu Lu,Tong Zhang

Reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-based NO 2 sensors have attracted considerable attention due to their excellent advantages of low power consumption and manufacturability to facilitate massive deployment. However, it is still a great challenge to fabricate RGO-based room-temperatureNO 2 sensors with excellent sensing performances. Herein, we have demonstrated a combined surface modification and heteroatom doping approach to enhance the sensing performances of RGO-based room-temperature NO 2 sensors, where SnO 2 nanoparticles modified nitrogen-doped RGO (SnO 2 /N-RGO) hybrids had been used as sensing materials. The SnO 2 /N-RGO hybrids were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis method using SnCl 4 , GO and urea as precursors. The combined characterizations of X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), elemental mapping, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Raman spectra as well as N 2 sorption isotherm were used to characterize the materials thus obtained, indicating the successful preparation of SnO 2 /N-RGO hybrids. During the hydrothermal progress, SnCl 4 conversed into SnO 2 nanoparticles (NPs), and GO was reduced into RGO, while urea was decomposed into nitrogen-containing molecule and doped into RGO. It is found that SnO 2 NPs with the size of 3–5   nm are uniformly dispersed on N-RGO nanosheets. Most importantly, SnO 2 /N-RGO hybrids-based sensor exhibits superior sensing performances toward NO 2 operated at room temperature, which are better than those of pure RGO and SnO 2 /RGO hybrids. For example, SnO 2 /N-RGO hybrids show response of 1.38 to 5   ppm NO 2 with the response time and recovery time of 45   s and 168   s. The excellent sensing performances are attributed to incorporation of N atoms into RGO and the modification of RGO with SnO 2 NPs. This novel sensor based on SnO 2 /N-RGO hybrids promises to provide an essential sensing platform for the detection of NO 2 with excellent sensing performances at room temperature.

Room temperature gas sensor based on porous NiO nanoplates modified with rGO nanosheets and SnO2 nanoparticles for accurate and rapid ppb-level NO2 detection

Haineng Bai,Cheng Feng,Yiru Chen,Yunxiao Du,Yamin Feng,Kuili Liu,Yali Yan,Jia Liu,Baohua Zhang,Jin Wang,Dunjun Chen,Youdou Zheng,Fuqiang Guo

The porous NiO nanoplates modified with rGO nanosheets and SnO 2 nanoparticles are developed for accurate and rapid ppb-level NO 2 detection. The developed SnO 2 /NiO/rGO sensor towards 50 ppm NO 2 gas demonstrates an excellent gas-sensing response of 14.8 at 23 °C, which is 3.03 times that of NiO/rGO sensor (4.89) and 6.49 times that of NiO sensor (2.28), respectively. The developed SnO 2 /NiO/rGO sensor exhibits faster response/recovery speed (12.7/32.8 s @5 ppm), with extra-low theoretical detection limit of 0.15 ppb at room temperature. More fascinatingly, our sensors indicate great sensitivity, outstanding repeatability and long-term stability for longer than 7 weeks. Additionally, it also suggests that 1 °C and 1 % relative humidity have the same effect on the SnO 2 /NiO/rGO sensor signal as approximately 13 ppb and 7.0 ppb NO 2 gas change, respectively. Such excellent properties are mainly attributed to the large surface-to-volume ratio, which provides active sites to NO 2 gas spread, adsorption and diffusion on material surface in redox reaction. Moreover, the ternary heterojunctions formed by NiO, rGO and SnO 2 may serve as highly conductive channels to accelerate carrier transfer and abundant oxygen vacancies to reduce the adsorption energy for O 2 and NO 2 gas, thus further improving performance of the sensors.

Sb/Pd co-doped SnO2 nanoparticles for methane detection: resistance reduction and sensing performance studies

Jiawen Shi,Sen Liu,Peng Zhang,Ning Sui,Shuang Cao,Tingting Zhou,Tong Zhang

Methane (CH4) gas sensors play an important role in industrial safety and detection of indoor gas quality. In general, metal oxide semiconductor sensing materials with nano-structure have high responses to the target gas. However, the sensor resistance is usually very high. Considering the practical application, it is vital to reduce base resistance and improve sensitivity for gas sensors. Herein, Pd-doped SnO2 nanoparticles were prepared as the basis material by a simple sol-gel method. In order to adjust the resistance, the pentavalent metal element (Sb) was introduced via a simple doping route. As CH4 sensing layers, the prepared SnO2-sensors doped with Pd and Sb exhibited the most obvious resistance reduction effect. Meantime, excellent sensing performances including high response, fast response/recovery time, excellent reproducibility and great stability were also obtained. In-depth research has shown that the ability to reduce resistance depends on the effective internal doping of cation with high valence. The enhanced sensing capability can be attributed to the 'synergistic effects' including catalytic effects of novel metals, increased oxygen vacancies and decreased band gap energy. This work can provide a new opportunity to design metal oxide sensing materials with low resistance and high sensitivity.

3D Porous MXene Nanosheet/SnO2 Nanoparticle Composites for H2S Gas Sensing

Lu Tang,Huajing Wang,Zhenming Du,Chaoqi Zhu,Chaofan Ma,Dawen Zeng

Due to the large band gap, most metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based gas sensors operate at high temperatures, which greatly limits their performance for gas sensing. In this work, we reported the successful synthesis of nanocomposites consisting of porous MXene nanosheets formed by the sublimation of sulfur and SnO2 nanoparticles (S-PM/SnO2). To prevent the restacking of MXene flakes under van der Waals force, a sacrificial S-template method was employed to transform MXene into a three-dimensional (3D) structure. The presence of MXene lowers the operating temperature. With a high response (∼30.6 – 10 ppm of H2S), rapid response speed (∼16.6 s – 50 ppm of H2S), high sensitivity (∼3.12 ppm–1), low detection limits (distinct response to 100 ppb H2S), and good selectivity at 100 °C, the sensor based on the optimal sample of S-PM/SnO2-6 demonstrates excellent H2S sensing performance. The improvement in H2S gas-sensing capacity can be attributed to the development of heterojunctions at the interface of porous MXene nanosheets (S-PM) and SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs). This leads to an enlarged surface depletion region and an elevated potential barrier, which significantly amplifies the range of resistance variation. These results suggest that S-PM/SnO2 nanocomposite has promising prospects in the realm of low-temperature and highly sensitive H2S detection.

Binding SnO2 Nanoparticles with MoS2 Nanosheets Toward Highly Reversible and Cycle-Stable Lithium/Sodium Storage

Deliang Cheng,Wenbiao Zhang,Yi Tang,Qingsheng Gao,Renzong Hu,Lichun Yang,Min Zhu

SnO 2 , with its high theoretical capacity, abundant resources, and environmental friendliness, is widely regarded as a potential anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Nevertheless, the coarsening of the Sn nanoparticles impedes the reconversion back to SnO 2 , resulting in low coulombic efficiency and rapid capacity decay. In this study, we fabricated a heterostructure by combining SnO 2 nanoparticles with MoS 2 nanosheets via plasma-assisted milling. The heterostructure consists of in-situ exfoliated MoS 2 nanosheets predominantly in 1 T phase, which tightly encase the SnO 2 nanoparticles through strong bonding. This configuration effectively mitigates the volume change and particle aggregation upon cycling. Moreover, the strong affinity of Mo, which is the lithiation product of MoS 2 , toward Sn plays a pivotal role in inhibiting the coarsening of Sn nanograins, thus enhancing the reversibility of Sn to SnO 2 upon cycling. Consequently, the SnO 2 /MoS 2 heterostructure exhibits superb performance as an anode material for LIBs, demonstrating high capacity, rapid rate capability, and extended lifespan. Specifically, discharged/charged at a rate of 0.2 A g −1 for 300 cycles, it achieves a remarkable reversible capacity of 1173.4 mAh g −1 . Even cycled at high rates of 1.0 and 5.0 A g −1 for 800 cycles, it still retains high reversible capacities of 1005.3 and 768.8 mAh g −1 , respectively. Moreover, the heterostructure exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance in both full LIBs and sodium-ion batteries.
