Detecting nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at room temperature (RT) is crucial for advancing environmental monitoring technologies, enabling efficient and practical air quality assessment. Two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanomaterials, recognized for their large specific surface area (SSA), abundant functional groups, and tunable electrical properties, have attracted considerable attention as promising candidates for room temperature gas-sensing applications. However, despite their potential, challenges, such as low gas adsorption efficiency, limited sensitivity, and poor selectivity, hinder their broader application and development, highlighting the need for further research. Here, we introduce a zero-dimensional (0D)/2D heterojunction gas-sensitive structure by synthesizing SnS2 quantum dot (QD)-sensitized Ti3C2Tx MXene nanocomposites via a hydrothermal method. The carefully designed gas sensor exhibits a significantly enhanced response value (RV) of 5.83% for 10 ppm of NO2 and a low detection limit of 500 ppb at RT, achieving an RV that is 5.8 times higher than that of pure Ti3C2Tx. Additionally, the sensor demonstrates high sensitivity (0.76 ppm–1 in the 0.5–5 ppm range), excellent selectivity, and outstanding stability, with a performance degradation of only 3.2% over 4 weeks. The exceptional performance arises from the synergistic effects of the quantum confinement properties of SnS2 QDs and the superior conductivity of Ti3C2Tx, which together provide abundant active sites for gas adsorption and facilitate efficient charge transfer pathways. Furthermore, the formation of the heterojunction modulates the resistance, enhancing room temperature sensing capabilities. The synthesized nanomaterials offer significant potential for advancing the design of heterostructures that integrate 0D QDs with 2D nanomaterials, paving the way for highly efficient NO2 detection at RT. Moreover, maintaining an optimal operating temperature further enhances the accuracy and reliability of real-time NO2 monitoring systems.

Electrocatalytic active sites along the Mo-terminated edge of molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) are responsible for the promising hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity but poor electrical convey, and scarcity of active sites may inhibit its electrocatalytic performance. Therefore, enhancing the electronic conductivity and increasing the active sites in basal plane are required to realize more efficient hydrogen evolution activity for layered MoS 2 . Herein, by the incorporation of heterophase SnS 2 quantum dots into the basal plane to form atomic-level heterostructure, we dramatically report the enhanced HER activity from MoS 2 with current density of −10 mA cm −2 at a lowered overpotential of 240 mV, a reduced Tafel slope of 65 mV/dec and a long-term durability over 18 h operation. Structural characterization and electrochemical studies reveal the incorporation of heterophase SnS 2 quantum dots can efficaciously realize the disorder engineering in the atomic level to regulate the electronic structure, optimize the energy barrier of hydrogen adsorption/desorption, and proliferate the catalytic active sites density, thus activating the basal plane of MoS 2 for hydrogen evolution. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals the inception of the improved electrocatalytic activity stemmed from an astronomically immense reduction of the kinetic energy barrier of hydrogen adsorption on and desorption from sulfur sites and sulfur vacancies in the basal plane upon SnS 2 incorporation and Sn doping. Our work engenders an efficient method to active the basal plane of 2H-MoS 2 by the incorporation of SnS 2 heterophase into the atomic layer inducing atomic dislocation and electronic structure optimization.

In this study, a novel direct Z-scheme SnS2quantum dots/sulfur-doped polyimide (SQDs/SPI) photocatalyst was firstly fabricated by an in situ crystallization growth of SnS2quantum dots on sulfur-doped polyimide through a facile hydrothermal method. The photocatalytic hydrogen production activity of 5SQDs/SPI samples reached 3526 μmoL g−1in the coexistence of triethanolamine and methanol used as hole sacrificial agents, which is about 13 times higher than that of SPI under the same conditions and 42 times higher than that of SPI only as a hole sacrificial agent. The improvement can be related to the direct Z-scheme charge transfer in the tight interface between SQDs and SPI, which promoted rapid separation and significantly prolonged the lifetime of photoexcited carriers. The Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism was proposed. This discovery comes up with a new strategy for the development of an efficient, environmentally friendly, and sustainable sulfide quantum dots/polymer non-noble metal photocatalyst.

An efficient electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET) method is proposed which combines the luminescent materials of tris(4,4′-dicarboxylicacid-2,2′-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) (energy donor) and tin dioxide and tin disulfide quantum dots (SnO 2 /SnS 2 QDs) (energy acceptor) into the isoreticular metal − organic framework-3 (IRMOF-3) material to form a composite. In this mode, the distance between the energy donor and the acceptor was greatly shortened, reducing the energy loss, and thereby effectively improving RET efficiency and further significantly improving the ECL signal. The obtained composite (SnO 2 /SnS 2 QDs-Ru@IRMOF-3) was combined with sandwich immunoreaction to construct an ECL immunosensor for the sensitive detection of procalcitonin (PCT). Under the optimized experimental conditions with a working potential of − 1.48 V (vs Ag/AgCl), the proposed PCT biosensor exhibited a linear concentration range of 1 × 10 −4 –200 ng mL −1 , with a detection limit of 0.029 pg mL −1 ( S / N = 3). The biosensor was used to detect PCT in actual samples. The biosensor has broad application prospects in biological analysis and clinical diagnosis due to its high sensitivity, good selectivity, and good stability. Graphical abstract
