New Insight of Li-Doped Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 Thin Films: Li-Induced Na Diffusion from Soda Lime Glass by a Cation-Exchange Reaction

Yanchun Yang,Lijian Huang,Daocheng Pan

In our recent report (ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces2016, 8, 5308), Li+ ions had been successfully incorporated into the lattice of the selenized Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 thin film on a quartz substrate by substituting equivalent Cu+ ions, and Li+ ions was also found to have the little effect on the crystal growth and defect passivation. To further improve the cell performance of Li-doped CZTSSe devices, we conducted the same experiments on the sodium-rich soda-lime glass (SLG) substrate in this study, instead of sodium-free quartz substrate. Surprisingly, only trace amounts of Li (Li/Cu molar ratio ∼1 × 10–4) were detected in the final CZTSSe thin films; meanwhile, a large amount of sodium was present on the surface and at the grain boundaries of the selenized thin films. A Li/Na exchange mechanism is used to explain this phenomenon. Only on the sodium-free substrate can Li+ ions enter the CZTSSe host lattice, and doping Li+ ions on the SLG substrate are nearly identical to doping Na+ ions.

Superoxide dismutase A (SodA) is a c-di-GMP effector protein governing oxidative stress tolerance in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia

Xiao-Yu Sun,Jie Deng,Chenhui Zhang,Sin-Yee Fung,Kam-Leung Siu,Ying-Ying Cheng,Liumei Ye,Jiaoxia Qin,Ke Wang,Jiu-Xin Qu,Wenying Gao,Fuxiang Wang,Dong-Yan Jin,Liang Yang

C-di-GMP is a bacterial second messenger implicated in the regulation of many key functions including antibiotic tolerance and biofilm formation. Our understanding of how c-di-GMP exerts its action via receptors to modulate different biological functions is still limited. Here we used a c-di-GMP affinity pull-down assay coupled to LC-MS/MS to identify c-di-GMP-binding proteins in the opportunistic pathogen Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. This analysis identified Smlt3238 (SodA), a protein of the superoxide dismutase family, as a c-di-GMP-binding protein. Microscale thermophoresis showed that purified SodA protein bound c-di-GMP with an estimated dissociation constant (Kd) value of 141.5 μM. Using various in vivo and in vitro experiments, we demonstrated that c-di-GMP modulates the enzyme activity of SodA directly. Circular dichroism experiments revealed that SodA protein gradually altered its basic structure with increasing levels of c-di-GMP. Phenotypic experiments conducted in the presence of a range of intracellular c-di-GMP levels showed that SodA function is modulated by c-di-GMP. The findings thus identify a novel c-di-GMP binding protein that governs oxidative stress tolerance in S. maltophilia .

Soda lignin as a sustainable photosensitive component for conventional and controlled radical photopolymerization

Wang Min,Luo Xiongfei,Wang Qunying,Strehmel Veronika,Chen Zhijun,Li Shujun,Strehmel Bernd

Valorization of waste for chemical processes addresses a challenging task for the society. Soda lignin ( AL ) available in the pulp industry operated in a photocatalytic cycle CuX 2 / L (X: Br, Cl; L : Me 6 TREN: Tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine) and to initiate radical photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with α-bromophenylacetate (EBPA) by exposure at 420 nm. This resulted in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA ) exhibiting a dispersity <1.3 with CuX 2 /L loading of ≲ 52 ppm. Deactivator reduction increased dispersity. MMA, styrene, and benzyl methacrylate successfully served as monomers for chain extension and block copolymerization experiments. This worked with CuX 2 /L ≥ 6.5 ppm, although conventional radical polymerization additionally competed. Adding of sodium pyruvate enabled radical photopolymerization under air. Modification of lignin with an aryl sulfonate group resulted in a one-component photoinitiator. It successfully initiated radical photopolymerization of a monomer mixture of (hydroxyethyl)methacrylate (HEMA) and urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA). Scale-up experiments approved practicability of photo-ATRP.

A direct electrochemical substitution electrodialytic system for CO2 conversion into high value-added soda

Huangying Wang,Haiyang Yan,Kang Peng,Junying Yan,Rong Fu,Ruirui Li,Baoying Wang,Chenxiao Jiang,Yaoming Wang,Tongwen Xu

The growth of CO 2 emissions is a critical challenge to the global ecological system. Meanwhile, the rising use of evaporation units in industrial wastewater treatment plants has generated a large number of salts with low values for further valorization. In this study, a direct electrochemical substitution electrodialytic system is proposed for the conversion of CO 2 and Na 2 SO 4 into high value-added NaHCO 3 and H 2 SO 4 . The CO 2 is absorbed with polyethyleneimine and further metathesized with inorganic salts in an electrodialytic reactor. This unique system achieves soda preparation by avoiding the use of ammonia as a feedstock and demonstrates the ability to capture and convert CO 2 at a specific energy consumption of 1.2 kWh/kg NaHCO 3 and a current efficiency of 83%. This proof-of-concept study provides a highly effective technological pathway for the conversion of notorious wastes into valuable resources, creating possibilities for concurrent carbon reduction and wasted salt utilization.

Detoxification and resource utilization of soda ash chromite ore processing residue by copper slag

Lanbin Wang,Yangming Xu,Yanping Ma,Yu Chen,Anju Yang,Guixiang Gan,Yaguang Du,Yan Sun

Chromite ore processing residue (COPR) and copper slag (CS) are industrial waste slags that cause environmental pollution and require effective treatment. This study proposes a new strategy for the co-treatment and resource utilization of COPR and CS. Under the optimal conditions (liquid-solid ratio of 9.99; H 2 SO 4 concentration of 0.85 M; the CS/COPR mass ratio of 9.98%; temperature of 88.20 ℃; and duration of 60 min), the reduction efficiency of Cr(VI) reached 99.48%, and the total Cr leaching concentration of residue reached 1.35 mg/L, which was below the USEPA regulatory limit of 5 mg/L. In addition, the detoxicated slag containing 61.44 wt% Fe 2 O 3 can be used as a raw material in the steel industry. Through kinetic, characterization, and DFT analyses, the effective remediation of Cr(VI) in COPR by CS is a combination of adsorption and reduction. The unreacted shrinkage nuclear reaction model under the control of the surface chemical reaction is the most suitable model to describe the process, and when the apparent activation energy is 63.90 kJ/mol, the apparent rate equation is: 1-(1-x) 1/3 = 1·371×10 7 [CS/COPR] 2·35004 [H 2 SO 4 ] 2·3945 [L/S] 1·95338 exp(–63·90/RT) This is an important study for waste-waste co-treatment and resource utilization of industrial waste.

Research on Impurity Removal Processes in the Production of Sodium Carbonate from Natural Soda Ash

Lu Yi,Liu Zhenxing,Hu Wanda,Wu Bateer,Li Tuanyuan,Ma Yongpeng,Zhang Hongzhong

To address the high impurity content in sodium carbonate (Na 2 CO 3 ) from natural soda ash, which is unsuitable for advanced industries like battery manufacturing, this study developed an innovative “elutriation + adsorption” process using samples from Tongbai, China. By exploiting Na 2 CO 3 ’s temperature-dependent solubility (20°C−30°C), saturated elutriation achieved the removal of 75%−85% of Ca, Fe, Mg, Zn, and Cu impurities, while subsequent adsorption using modified clinoptilolite (45% increased surface area, 60% enhanced ion-exchange capacity) enabled 98.78% potassium removal efficiency. The integrated process delivered 99.71% total impurity reduction, surpassing the first-grade threshold of battery-grade Na 2 CO 3 (T/HNSDCHYXH001-2023) with < 0.003% residual K content. Crucially, this zero chemical-addition approach retained the "natural" production integrity while achieving lower energy consumption than conventional crystallization methods, positioning it as a sustainable solution for upgrading natural soda ash to battery-industry specifications.

Mechanochemical wear of soda lime silicate glass in water: Effect of cations in aqueous solution

Xiao Zhu,Andrew L. Ogrinc,Qingshan Li,Robert Hengstebeck,Jiaxin Yu,Seong H. Kim,Hongtu He

Surface flaws and defects of glass are known to be sensitive to the environment to which the glass surface is exposed. Previous investigations indicated that the mechanochemical wear of soda lime silicate (SLS) glass in humid air is associated with the presence of sodium ion leaching and interactions with adsorbed water, but the wear of SLS glass in aqueous solutions remains elusive. In this study, the wear of SLS glass was investigated in aqueous solutions with the presence of various electrolyte cation sizes and valences. The results show that the mechanochemical wear of SLS glass decreases as the concentration of sodium ions in the aqueous solution increases. However, the mechanochemical wear of the SLS glass surface increases with the ion size for solutions with monovalent cations, but significantly decreases with the di- and trivalent cations in aqueous solutions. Further analyzes indicate that the sodium ion migration to the glass surface plays important roles in mechanochemical wear of SLS glass in aqueous solutions, in addition to the ion-exchange and hydrolysis of Si–O–Si network. The findings of this study provide further insights into the mechanochemical damage mechanism of silicate glass in aqueous environments.

Waste to wealth: Waste liquid promotes rice growth in soda saline-alkali soil by improving Desulfocapsaceae abundance

Jianfeng Zhang,Xianfeng Lin,Xiaoyu Lin,Xu Song,Yu Wu,Fengyuan Jin,Hanchi Wang,Jing Liang,Jiejing Zhang

Lignocellulose sulfuric acid pretreatment is widely utilized in many industrial fields, but its waste liquid endangers the environment. While, the waste liquid has potential to promote plant growth in saline-alkali soil due to its strong acidity and high organic matter content. Therefore, the waste liquid was innovatively used to promote rice growth in soda saline-alkali soil, and a novel growth promotion mechanism revealed. This waste liquid promotes rice growth by lowering pH and optimizing microbial community of rice rhizosphere, especially increasing Desulfocapsaceae abundance. Desulfocapsaceae reduced sulfate into H 2 S, which increased the content of abscisic acid (ABA) and betaine in rice, thereby promoting rice growth in saline-alkali soil. The waste liquid increases rice yield in soda saline-alkali land by about 17 %. This study addresses two challenges simultaneously: the sustainable and high value-added management of industrial wastewater and the enhancement of crop growth in challenging saline-alkali soils. This study is of great significance to biomass energy utilization and saline-alkali repair.

A near-infrared spectroscopy-based end-point determination method for the blending process of Dahuang soda tablets

Si-jun Wu,Ping Qiu,Pian Li,Zheng Li,Wen-long Li

Objectives: This study is aimed to explore the blending process of Dahuang soda tablets. These are composed of two active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs, emodin and emodin methyl ether) and four kinds of excipients (sodium bicarbonate, starch, sucrose, and magnesium stearate). Also, the objective is to develop a more robust model to determine the blending end-point. Methods: Qualitative and quantitative methods based on near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy were established to monitor the homogeneity of the powder during the blending process. A calibration set consisting of samples from 15 batches was used to develop two types of calibration models with the partial least squares regression (PLSR) method to explore the influence of density on the model robustness. The principal component analysis-moving block standard deviation (PCA-MBSD) method was used for the end-point determination of the blending with the process spectra. Results: The model with different densities showed better prediction performance and robustness than the model with fixed powder density. In addition, the blending end-points of APIs and excipients were inconsistent because of the differences in the physical properties and chemical contents among the materials of the design batches. For the complex systems of multi-components, using the PCA-MBSD method to determine the blending end-point of each component is difficult. In these conditions, a quantitative method is a more suitable alternative. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that the effect of density plays an important role in improving the performance of the model, and a robust modeling method has been developed.

Production of Cellulose Pulp and Lignin from High-Density Apple Wood Waste by Preimpregnation-Assisted Soda Cooking

Shuai Gao,Guoyu Tian,Yingjuan Fu,Zhaojiang Wang

Apple wood waste (AWW), mainly tree trucks, is collectible lignocellulosic biomass from orchard rotation. The biorefinery of AWW is challenging because of the hard and dense structure. In the present work, chemical composition determination and microstructure observation was performed for the first time on AWW. Alkali-preimpregnation-assisted soda cooking (APSC) was developed to separate cellulose a pulp and lignin from AWW. APSC attained pulp yield of 34.2% at 23% NaOH, showing a 13.2% improvement compared to conventional soda cooking (SC). Fiber length analysis showed APSC-AWW pulp consisted mainly of medium and short fibers, which means blending with long-fibered pulp to enhance the physical strength of pulp sheets. A blend of APSC-AWW pulp and long-fibered pulp in the proportion of 80:20 attained comparable physical strength to hardwood kraft pulp. ASPC-AWW lignin was separated from spent liquor by acidification and then purified by dialysis desalination. The purified ASPC-AWW lignin showed a weight-average molecular weight of 4462 g/mol, similar to softwood kraft lignin but more uniform. Structural analysis revealed that ASPC-AWW lignin was composed of a syringyl unit (S), guaiacyl unit(G), andp-hydroxyphenyl unit (H), and an S unit was dominant with an S/G/H ratio of 74.5:18.2:7.3. It is believed the utilization of fruit tree wood waste as the feedstock of biorefinery is attractive to countries without sufficient forestry resources. Furthermore, the developed APSC is based on conventional SC, which ensures the feasibility of an industrial application.

Investigation on stabilization/solidification characteristics of lead-contaminated soil using innovative composite model of cement and soda residue

An Xiaoyu,Zuo Dianjun,Wang Fei,Liang Chao

The cement solidification/stabilization method of heavy metal contaminated soils has been promoted in engineering practice and applied on a large scale for site remediation, but it still reveals some scientific problems in the current complex and variable global extreme climate. To solve these problems, this study used waste soda residue as a composite additive, and established an innovative composite model (cement-soda) to remediate lead-contaminated soil. The innovative composite model for unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and toxic leaching properties under different conditions were investigated As well as curing and leaching mechanisms are discussed, and future industrial practice was evaluated. The results showed that the addition of soda residue improved the early (20 days) UCS of the composite curing agent for lead-contaminated soil by an average of 23.1% MPa. The UCS strength was 0.96 MPa, which was the maximum when the percentage of soda residue composite was 40%. The concentration of Pb 2+ in the leachate of the cement-soda residue (CSH) composite curing agent was greatly reduced (average 3.28 times) compared with that of a single cement in the same situation, with an average leached Pb 2+ concentration of 1.87 mg·L −1 . This finding indicates that the addition of alkali residue improved the curing effect. The curing mechanism was divided into four steps, mainly a complex physicochemical reaction between the CSH composite and soil particles. The leaching mechanism of CSH to aqueous solution is mainly the consumption of acid ions by alkaline substances. Collectively, this study will provide scientific data to support potential lead-containing soil in site remediation technologies and future large-scale engineering applications.

In-situ formation of CaAl-layered double hydroxides with attapulgite for synergistic remediation of soda saline-alkali soil

Zunqun Zhu,Miaomiao Yu,Peiyun Gong,Jing Zhou,Huiting Song,Jun Zhou

Novel amendment triggers in-situ CaAl-LDH formation, rapidly immobilizing soil alkalinity and carbonate. • Rapidly reduces soil pH by 2.7 units and carbonate by 83%, while cutting exchangeable Na⁺ by 76%. • Soil structure improves significantly, increasing macroaggregates 17-fold and organic matter stability by 33%. • Immediate planting is enabled, boosting pakchoi height 218% and fresh weight 70% in pots. Soda saline-alkali soils pose a severe threat to agricultural productivity due to high pH, elevated carbonate (CO 3 2 − ) concentration, and poor soil structure. However, achieving rapid alkalinity reduction and long-term stability of immobilized salts remains a significant challenge in soil remediation. This study developed a novel composite amendment comprising calcium sulfate (CaSO 4 ,), aluminum sulfate (Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ), and attapulgite clay (ATP) to induce the in-situ formation of CaAl-layered double hydroxides (CaAl-LDHs) for the efficient remediation of soda saline-alkali soils. Through a 150-day mineralization experiment, the amendment rapidly triggered the formation of crystalline CaAl-LDHs, confirmed by XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, and XPS analyses. This process effectively immobilized free CO 3 2− and hydroxyl (OH − ) into the LDHs interlayers, resulting in a significant reduction in soil pH from 10.6 to 7.9 and CO 3 2− concentration by 83%. The treatment also reduced exchangeable Na⁺ by 76% and decreased water-soluble Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Al 3+ , and Fe 3+ concentrations. Importantly, soil structure was markedly improved, with macroaggregates (> 1 mm) increasing by 17 folds, and soil organic matter (SOM) stability enhanced by 33% due to increased organo-mineral associations and Fe/Al oxide concentration. A pot experiment with pakchoi further validated the amendment’s practicality, which significantly improved seedling germination, increased plant height by 218%, and boosted fresh weight by 70%, while concurrently lowering post-harvest soil pH and salinity. This study presents a rapid, stable, and synergistic strategy for sustainable saline-alkali soil remediation based on in-situ LDHs mineralization, offering a promising solution for improving soil health and crop productivity.
