In this paper, CaAl hydrotalcite or hydroxyapatite decorated invasive plant ( Solidago canadensis )-derived biochar were synthesized by co-precipitation and high temperature pyrolysis method. The three composites and bare biochar were characterized by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, and employed to remove Eu(III) from wastewater under a series of environmental conditions. The results indicated that the Eu(III) adsorption on BC@LDH@HAP was higher than that on BC, BC@LDH, and BC@HAP, and belonged to multi-layer adsorption, which was different from the monolayer adsorption of biochar. The adsorption could be fitted best by Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacity of Eu(III) on BC@LDH@HAP was up to 714 mg/g at pH ~ 6. The characterization results suggested that this excellent adsorption of BC@LDH@HAP arose from the abundant P-, C-, O-containing functional groups rather than larger specific surface area. The spectra of XPS, FT-IR, and XRD uncovered that the adsorption mechanisms of Eu(III) on BC@LDH@HAP involved surface complexation, ion exchange, and precipitation. Moreover, the absorbed Eu(III) was formed into two precipitate induced by P-containing groups and carbonate groups. This research confirmed BC@LDH@HAP is a promising material for the removal of Eu(III) in wastewater.

Solidago canadensisis one of the most destructive invasive plants in China, and current physical and chemical control methods are often costly, inefficient, and ecologically risky, highlighting the urgent demand for green and efficient ecological alternatives. The native vineHumulus scandensexhibits strong allelopathic potential. In this study, allelochemicals from its leaves and stems were extracted using petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and n-hexane. Their allelopathic effects onS. canadensiswere systematically evaluated through seed germination, seedling growth, and rhizome propagation assays, combined with widely targeted metabolomics. Leaf extracts showed markedly stronger allelopathic inhibition than stem extracts. Among all fractions, the ethyl acetate extract exerted the most potent suppression on seed germination, significantly reducing germination rate and root elongation in a concentration-dependent manner. At 100 g·L−1, leaf extracts—especially the ethyl acetate phase—significantly decreased belowground fresh weight, rhizome number, and new seedling emergence. The ethyl acetate extract also significantly elevated root antioxidant enzyme activities at 25–100 g·L−1, indicating induced oxidative stress. UPLC-MS/MS-based metabolomics identified 186 differential metabolites among extracts. Ten flavonoids were significantly upregulated in the ethyl acetate extract and were predominantly enriched in the kaempferol aglycone biosynthesis I pathway (MetMap 113) and the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway (ko00941), suggesting that these compounds may play a key role in the observed allelopathic inhibition. Collectively, the ethyl acetate extract ofH. scandensleaves effectively suppressesS. canadensisgrowth by inhibiting seed germination and rhizome tillering and by inducing oxidative stress, probably with the 10 candidate flavonoid metabolites, highlighting its strong potential as a biological control agent against this invasive weed.

Plant invasions and microplastic (MP) pollution are widespread environmental challenges with increasing impacts on soil ecosystems. Although their individual effects on soil faunal diversity are well-documented, the interactive effects of these co-occurring stressors remain poorly understood. We investigated the short-term (two months) responses of soil faunal communities to conventional (low-density polyethylene, LDPE) and biodegradable (polylactic acid, PLA) MPs in habitats with and without invasion by Solidago canadensis L. We found that invasion by S. canadensis significantly increased overall abundance and richness of soil fauna, particularly microbivores. However, MP addition—either alone or in combination with plant invasion—did not significantly affect the abundance or richness of the total soil fauna or most trophic groups. Structural equation modeling revealed that MPs not only attenuated the positive effect of invasion on overall abundance by 48.4%, but also reversed its effect on richness from positive to a net decrease of 120.6%. Moreover, while S. canadensis invasion significantly altered soil faunal community composition in plots without MPs, this effect disappeared in most MP-amended treatments. These findings suggest that short-term MP pollution may alter the impact of S. canadensis invasion on soil fauna. However, the magnitude of MP effects varied across trophic groups, with microbivores exhibiting the most notable response. This study underscores the necessity of considering interactions among co-occurring environmental stressors in soil biodiversity assessments, as their combined effects can reshape outcomes for key functional groups within ecosystems.

Tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is a widely used synthetic phenolic antioxidant found in edible oils and other fried foods. Nevertheless, the excess use of TBHQ can reduce food quality and impact public health. In this paper, we reported the synthesis of a nanocomposite consisting of carbon and nitrogen co-doped nickel oxide (NiO-N/C-700), which was used to modify a pencil graphite electrode for the sensitive detection of TBHQ. The carbon source was biochar derived from invasive species Solidago canadensis L., combined with inexpensive pencil graphite, which reduced overall cost. The as-prepared TBHQ electrochemical sensor exhibited a linear range of 0.02–200 μM, a limit of detection of 5.53 nM. In particular, this sensor can be applied for the quantitative detection of TBHQ in edible oil, fried food and crisps, achieving a satisfactory recovery rate of 99.30 %–106.40 %, promoting TBHQ detection in actual food samples.

The allelopathy of alien plants is critical to their successful invasion. In nature, two alien plants can co-invade the same habitat. Changes in the forms of nitrogen may have the potential to alter the invasion process of alien plants by causing alterations in their allelopathy. This study aimed to evaluate the individual and combined allelopathy of two alien plants from theAsteraceaefamily,Solidago canadensisL. andConyza canadensis(L.) Cronq. This study examined the effects of aqueous leaf extracts of the two alien plants with different nitrogen forms (NO3−N, NH4−N, and CO(NH2)2−N, and the mixed nitrogen forms at a 1:1:1 ratio) on the seed germination and seedling growth of the horticulturalAsteraceaespeciesLactuca sativaL. using a germination bioassay. The allelopathy of the two alien plants significantly reduced the seed germination and seedling growth ofL. sativa. Extracts fromS. canadensisproduced stronger allelopathy on the seed germination and seedling growth ofL. sativacompared with those fromC. canadensis. The mixture of extracts from the two alien plants produced an antagonistic effect when compared with the effects of extracts from each plant species. The addition of nitrogen intensified the allelopathy of the two alien plants on the seed germination and seedling growth ofL. sativa. The degree of influence of nitrogen on the individual and combined allelopathy of the two alien plants was similar. Thus, nitrogen deposition may facilitate the independent invasion and co-invasion of the two alien plants via intensified allelopathy. Keywords:alien plant;allelochemicals;aqueous leaf extracts;nitrogen deposition;Lactuca sativaL.

This study aims to gain insights into the allelopathic effects (by using leaf extracts) of the notorious invasive Solidago canadensis L. on seed germination of the associated Pterocypsela laciniata (Houtt.) C. Shih under different nitrogen (N) forms added: inorganic (NO3--N and NH4 -N), organic (urea-N), and mixed N (a mixture of the three N forms at 1:1:1 ratio). Among the two used concentrations of S. canadensis leaf extracts the higher exhibited inhibitory allelopathic effects on seedling height and biomass, germination potential, germination index, and vigor index of P. laciniata. N demonstrated positive effects on seed germination of P. laciniata. The effects of mixed and organic N on the seedling biomass of P. laciniata were more pronounced than those of inorganic N and control treatment. The vigor index of P. laciniata under mixed N was significantly higher than those under single N form and control treatment. Thus, organic and mixed N showed higher ecological effects on seed germination of P. laciniata than inorganic and single N form. All N forms could alleviate the inhibitory allelopathic effects of S. canadensis on seed germination of P. laciniata. Overall, the inhibitory allelopathic impact of S. canadensis on seed germination of native species may be attenuated under increased and diverse N deposition, thus it could prevent its further invasion.
