Effective removal of Co(II) and Sr(II) from radiocative wastes using covalent triazine frameworks: Kinetics and isotherm studies

Yan Yu,Lele Zhou,Juntao Tang,Peng Wu,Li Feng,Beixiao Ge,Hui Chen,Jinxing Hu,Shuang Song,Tao Zeng

Adsorption of pollutants onto adsorbents is extremely important for water purification systems. In this study, the dynamic adsorption of radionuclides Co(II) and Sr(II) onto covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) was explored. The effects of the adsorption conditions such as the amount of CTF (10, 25, and 50 mg), radionuclides concentrations (0.50–500.0 mg L −1 ), and adsorption temperature (293, 303, and 313 K) on the adsorption capacity was examined. Adsorption kinetics data were analyzed by using the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Langmuir and Freundlich models were used for analyzing adsorption isotherms. The results showed that the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order models described the experimental data better than the other models. The adsorption equilibrium time of CTF-N and CTF-B are 600 s and 200 s. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity (q max ) of CTF-B and CTF-N for Co(II) were determined as 50.76 mg g −1 and 60.82 mg g −1 at 303 K. The q max of CTF-B and CTF-N for Sr(II) were 43.12 mg g −1 and 55.89 mg g −1 at 303 K. Thermodynamic analyses indicated that the adsorption process of Co(II) and Sr(II) onto CTF was spontaneous (ΔG < 0) and endothermic (ΔH > 0) and was favored at higher temperature.

Removal of Sr(II) from water with highly-elastic carboxymethyl chitosan gel

Jinfeng Mei,Siqi Mo,Hui Zhang,Xudong Zheng,Zhongyu Li

A carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CMC) gel was prepared by crosslinking and functionalizing with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) using a one-pot reaction under mild conditions. Structural characterizations have revealed that the prepared O-CMC/EDTA gel has 3D porous structure with abundant carboxyl groups distributed in the pores. The prepared O-CMC/EDTA gel was used to adsorb Sr(II) ions in water while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to explore the adsorption mechanism. In order to analyze the adsorption process, we performed the adsorption kinetics and isotherms. The results show that the maximum adsorption capacity of O-CMC/EDTA for Sr (II) ions is about 105.81 mg/g at pH = 7. Notably, it exhibited fairly high compression elasticity due to multiple hydrogen bonds in the network. The showed no deformation after 30 continuous compression cycles. The ratio of O-CMC:EDTA significantly influences the adsorption property by affecting the crosslinking degree as well as the number of active sites. The high adsorption capacity, elasticity, and reusability have demonstrated that the prepared material is an effective and promising adsorbent for Sr(II) removal.

Selective Adsorption of Sr(II) from Aqueous Solution by Na3FePO4CO3: Experimental and DFT Studies

Yudong Xie,Xiaowei Wang,Jinfeng Men,Min Zhu,Chengqiang Liang,Hao Ding,Zhihui Du,Ping Bao,Zhilin Hu

The efficient segregation of radioactive nuclides from low-level radioactive liquid waste (LLRW) is paramount for nuclear emergency protocols and waste minimization. Here, we synthesized Na3FePO4CO3(NFPC) via a one-pot hydrothermal method and applied it for the first time to the selective separation of Sr2+from simulated LLRW. Static adsorption experimental results indicated that the distribution coefficientKdremained above 5000 mL·g−1, even when the concentration of interfering ions was more than 40 times that of Sr2+. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of Sr2+showed no significant change within the pH range of 4 to 9. The adsorption of Sr2+fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, with an equilibrium time of 36 min and a maximum adsorption capacity of 99.6 mg·g−1. Notably, the adsorption capacity was observed to increment marginally with an elevation in temperature. Characterization analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidated the adsorption mechanism, demonstrating that Sr2+initially engaged in an ion exchange reaction with Na+. Subsequently, Sr2+coordinated with four oxygen atoms on the NFPC (100) facet, establishing a robust Sr-O bond via orbital hybridization.

Adsorptive removal of Sr(II) from aqueous solution by polyvinyl alcohol/graphene oxide aerogel

Jiang-bo Huo,Guoce Yu,Jianlong Wang

In this study, a new adsorbent, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and graphene oxide (GO), was prepared, characterized and used for the removal of Sr 2+ from aqueous solution. In PVA/GO composite, the inter-lamellar spacing of adjacent GO layers was dramatically enlarged due to the intercalation of PVA molecules, such a unique architecture significantly mitigated the aggregation of GO layers, which facilitated the accessible exposure of active sites and the mass transfer of strontium ions (Sr 2+ ), thus enhancing the adsorption capacity toward Sr 2+ . The adsorption of Sr 2+ by PVA/GO composite conformed to the pseudo second-order kinetic model ( R 2  = 0.9994), the Langmuir model ( R 2  = 0.9042), and the Freundlich model ( R 2  = 0.9598). The complexation interaction between Sr 2+ and oxygen atoms/π-electron domain of PVA/GO composite was primarily responsible for the adsorption mechanism, based on the characterization results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersion spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD).

Characterization of organo-montmorillonites and comparison for Sr(II) removal: Equilibrium and kinetic studies

Pingxiao Wu,Yaping Dai,Hang Long,Nengwu Zhu,Ping Li,Jinhua Wu,Zhi Dang

Organo-montmorillonites (organo-Mts) were prepared by grafting with 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES), and surface modification which was composed of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HDTMAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solutions. XRD, BET, FTIR, SEM and Zeta potential analysis were used to characterize the surface and structure properties of the as-obtained products. The XRD and FTIR results showed that APTES was successfully grafted to calcium-saturated montmorillonite (Ca-Mt) and the BET data illustrated that the surface area and microporous volume decreased largely after modification, while the pore diameter increased. Moreover, batch experiments were conducted to investigate the adsorption behavior of Sr(II) on organo-Mts. The experimental results showed that the adsorption capacity of APTES-Mt was 65.6   mg/g, much larger than those of Ca-Mt, SDS-Mt and HDTMAB-Mt (13.23   mg/g, 26.85   mg/g and 3.91   mg/g, respectively) under the chosen conditions. Pseudo-second-order model fitted well with the adsorption kinetic studies for all materials with an equilibrium time of 24   h. Further, the isotherm adsorption could be described well with both Langmuir and DKR models for SDS-Mt, Freundlich model for Ca-Mt and APTES-Mt as well. The Sr(II) removal by Ca-Mt was mainly ion exchange, nevertheless, that by SDS-Mt and APTES-Mt were surface adsorption and ligand adsorption, respectively.

Interface-Engineered ZIF-8/CS Dual-Network Aerogels for Efficient Capture of Sr(II) Ions

Guojing Yu,Qixia Zhang,Kaiyi Pan,Yueqiang Zhao,Yuanhang Zhou,Tianjiu Jiang,Ye Xiong

Due to their poor resistance to swelling, developing biomass-based radionuclide-capturing aerogel adsorbents with high adsorption capacity and excellent mechanical stability remains a significant challenge. This paper describes a dual-network aerogel constructed using a multiscale interface-control strategy, leveraging Zn2+-induced chitosan precross-linking and entanglement of oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose (ox-CMC). Within this stable framework, ZIF-8 nanoparticles were synthesized in situ. This design, through physical entanglement and chemical cross-linking, suppressed the swelling of the dual-network framework. After 30 days of soaking, its tensile strength remained approximately 0.48 MPa, and it also exhibited good compressive resilience. Simultaneously, the nitrogen-rich channels of ZIF-8 synergize with the negatively charged surface of the dual network (zeta potential: −40.5 mV), resulting in an Sr2+ adsorption capacity of 226.8 mg/g, which is significantly higher than that of many clay- or polymer-based adsorbents. After 10 adsorption–desorption cycles, the aerogel retained 85.8% of its initial properties. This multiscale interface design provides a robust strategy for preparing swelling-resistant, high-performance biomass aerogels for advanced radioactive wastewater treatment.

Preparation of K2SbPO6-Loaded Porous Geopolymer Particles for Efficient Sr(II) Removal: Adsorption Performance and Mechanism

Chufeng Cheng,Wei Fang,Gaoshang Ouyang,Jingsong Wang

To achieve efficient separation of Sr2+under complex ionic-strength conditions, porous geopolymer particles (PGs) were used as a support to construct a K2SbPO6-loaded porous geopolymer composite, denoted as K2SbPO6@PGs, via in situ loading of one-dimensional K2SbPO6by a high-temperature solid-state route. Its adsorption performance and mechanism were systematically compared with those of pristine PGs. Structural characterization (SEM/EDS, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and BET) confirmed that the K2SbPO6crystalline phase was uniformly anchored onto the PGs framework while preserving interconnected mesoporous channels. K2SbPO6@PGs exhibited excellent Sr2+removal over a wide pH range (3–12), with a removal efficiency of approximately 92% at pH 3, which was significantly higher than that of PGs (approximately 5%). The isotherm data were better fitted by the Sips model (R2= 0.982), and the maximum adsorption capacity reached 189.35 mg·g−1(theoretical qm = 201.14 mg·g−1). Kinetic fitting showed that PGs followed the pseudo-first-order model, whereas K2SbPO6@PGs were better described by the pseudo-second-order model, indicating that chemical adsorption dominated the process through K+/Sr2+exchange and surface complexation. Coexisting-ion experiments demonstrated strong resistance to monovalent ions, whereas Ca2+and Mg2+caused more pronounced competitive effects. The results indicate that PGs mainly provide interconnected mass-transfer pathways and granular structural support, whereas K2SbPO6provides selective exchange sites with high affinity for Sr2+. The synergy between these two components endows the composite with good pH adaptability and enhanced adsorption performance and suggests its potential for subsequent continuous-flow separation studies.

Enhancing the adsorption behavior and mechanism of Sr(II) by functionalized montmorillonite with different 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) ratios

Chongmin Liu,Shuai Liu,Pingxiao Wu,Yaping Dai,Lytuong Tran,Nengwu Zhu,Chuling Guo,Ihsanullah Sohoo

Modified calcium saturated montmorillonite (Mt) was prepared at different 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) loadings through grafting. The as-products were characterized by XRD, FTIR and elemental analysis. Surface analysis such as acidity was examined at different H+ concentrations, showing that the release of OH− from the modified samples increased in the following order: APTES4.0CEC–Mt > APTES3.0CEC–Mt > APTES2.0CEC–Mt > APTES1.0CEC–Mt. Batch experiments were conducted and different conditions (pH, temperature and co-existing ions) were used to evaluate the adsorption capacity of the modified samples. The study developed a new way to confirm the mechanism, which indicated that ligand adsorption was the dominant sorption mechanism for Sr(II) uptake onto APTES–Mts. In general, APTES grafted montmorillonite possessed a higher efficiency of Sr(II) uptake and showed great potential for Sr(II)-rich wastewater treatment.

Potential application of graphene oxide membranes for removal of Cs(I) and Sr(II) from high level-liquid waste

Fuyin Ma,Zheng Li,Haogui Zhao,Yiyun Geng,Wei Zhou,Qingnuan Li,Lan Zhang

As a new carbon-based membrane material used for ionic and molecular sieving, the graphene oxide (GO) membrane also has potential application in radiochemical separation. In this work, the permeation performances of some typical metallic elements in high level-liquid waste (HLLW) through the ionic sieving 5-μm-thick GO membranes were investigated. It was found that the permeation rates of ions through GO membranes markedly decreased with the increase of hydrated ionic radii. Cs(I) and Sr(II) permeated through GO membranes quickly, whereas lanthanide ions and actinide ions infiltrated much more slowly, thus providing the feasibility of separation according to the difference of hydrated ionic radii. Moreover, the concentrations of initial metal ions and acidity in feed solutions also had influences on the permeation of ions through GO membranes, and higher initial metal ions and feed solution acidity were favorable to the removal of Cs(I) and Sr(II). The barrier separation test indicated that GO membranes had promising ability for the separation of Cs(I) and Sr(II) from lanthanide and actinide ions due to the difference of hydrated ion radius, and the separation factor of Cs(I)/U(VI) and Sr(II)/U(VI) would reach about 10 and 3 in single penetration. The presented results demonstrated that the membrane separation based on GO membrane would be a promising candidate for the removal of Cs(I) and Sr(II) from HLLW.

Thermal-responsive ion-imprinted polymer based on magnetic mesoporous silica SBA-15 for selective removal of Sr(II) from aqueous solution

Liu Yan,Chen Rui,Yuan Dandan,Liu Zhanchao,Meng Minjia,Wang Yun,Han Juan,Meng Xiangguo,Liu Fangfang,Hu Zhaoyong,Guo Wenlu,Ni Liang,Yan Yongsheng

Highly thermal-responsive magnetic Sr(II)-imprinted polymer (Sr(II)-TMIIP) was successfully synthesized as a potential effective adsorbent for selective removal of Sr(II) in aquatic environments. First, magnetic polyethyleneimine-loaded mesoporous SBA-15 (Fe 3 O 4 @PEI-SBA-15) was prepared via a simple polymer-mediated self-assembly method. Then, the surface of Fe 3 O 4 @PEI-SBA-15 was endowed with reactive vinyl groups through modification with 3-(methacryloyloxy)propyl trimethoxysilane (MPS). With the aid of vinyl groups, free radical polymerization of N -isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), methacrylic acid (MAA), and N , N ′-methylenebisacrylamide (BIS) in the presence of Sr(II) was performed with 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator, which provided a desired imprinted layer coating onto Fe 3 O 4 @PEI-SBA-15. The as-prepared Sr(II)-TMIIP was characterized by Fourier transmission infrared spectra (FT-IR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), UV, and N 2 adsorption–desorption techniques. The results showed that the Sr(II)-TMIIP exhibited thermal stability, temperature and magnetic sensitivity ( M s  = 10.34 emu/g), and ordered mesoporous structure. Batch mode adsorption studies were conducted to investigate the specific binding kinetics, adsorption equilibrium, and selective recognition ability of Sr(II)-TMIIP. Adsorption equilibrium experiments showed that the adsorption amount strongly depended on temperature and reached a maximum around the lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Regeneration experiments indicated that repeated adsorption and desorption by temperature swings were possible. Compared with the nonimprinted polymer (NIP), the Sr(II)-TMIIP had good temperature response and excellent selectivity and reusability, making it possible in applying for Sr(II) separation and controlled release.

Efficient removal of Co(II) and Sr(II) from aqueous solution using polyvinyl alcohol/graphene oxide/MnO2 composite as a novel adsorbent

Jiangbo Huo,Guoce Yu,Jianlong Wang

In this study, a novel adsorbent, polyvinyl alcohol/graphene oxide/MnO 2 composite was prepared, characterized and used for efficient removal of Co 2+ and Sr 2+ from aqueous solution. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Mn 2+ played a synergistic role in the gelation of PVA/GO/Mn 2+ , while Mn 2+ can be further converted into oxide to achieve functionalized aerogel (PVA/GO/MnO 2 ). The spectroscopy analysis manifested that hydrogen bonds and electrostatic attraction were responsible for the formation of PVA/GO/MnO 2 . The functionalization of MnO 2 enhanced the adsorption capacity for Co 2+ (2.1 folds) and Sr 2+ (1.3 folds) by PVA/GO/MnO 2 . The composite showed high adsorption capacity at broad pH range of 4.0–9.0. For competitive adsorption test, Ni 2+ /Zn 2+ exerted the most interfering effect on Co 2+ adsorption, while Mg 2+ /Ca 2+ showed severe interfering effect on Sr 2+ adsorption. Both electrostatic attraction and oxygen-containing groups contributed to the adsorption mechanism. This study may provide a new adsorbent for separation of Co 2+ and Sr 2+ from aqueous solution.

A modeling study by response surface methodology (RSM) on Sr(II) ion dynamic adsorption optimization using a novel magnetic ion imprinted polymer

Yan Liu,Fangfang Liu,Liang Ni,Minjia Meng,Xiangguo Meng,Guoxing Zhong,Jian Qiu

In this paper, response surface methodology (RSM) was successfully applied for the first time to optimize the dynamic adsorption conditions for the maximum removal of Sr(II) ion from aqueous solutions using Sr(II) ion imprinted polymers (Sr(II)-IIPs) as adsorbents. Sr(II)-IIPs based on the support matrix of magnetic SBA-15 (Fe3O4@SBA-15) were prepared by a surface imprinted technique and RAFT polymerization. The adsorbents can be separated from the fixed-bed column after adsorption by an external magnetic field. The effects of the operational parameters for maximizing Sr(II) removal were studied using Box–Behnken design (BBD) combined with RSM. A second-order quadratic model was built to predict the responses. The significance of the independent variables and their interactions was studied and tested by analysis of variance (ANOVA). The adequacy of the model was tested by the correlation between the experimental and predicted values of the responses. At optimum adsorption conditions, the Sr(II) adsorption capacity of Sr(II)-IIPs was found to be 22.12 mg g−1. Moreover, Sr(II)-IIPs exhibited an excellent dynamic selectivity of Sr(II) and could be easily regenerated by a dynamic desorption process with a desorption ratio of 99.2%.
