In this work, the feasibility of applying Sr 3 P 4 O 13 :Eu 3+ , a micron phosphor, to latent fingerprint visualization was explored and discussed. The preferential occupancy of Eu 3+ in the host lattice was analyzed based on the bond energy method. The excitation-wavelength-dependent luminescence properties of the phosphor were investigated through the photoluminescence emission and excitation spectra . The phosphor could be pumped effectively by deep ultraviolet and near ultraviolet. The luminescent color of the phosphor could be tuned from reddish orange (0.6025, 0.3939) to yellow (0.4729, 0.5031) with the change of excitation wavelength from 254 nm to 394 nm. The multilevel features of the phosphor-attached latent fingerprint could be identified clearly in deep ultraviolet. The high color contrast between ridge and valley lines provided a splendid condition for the observation. Moreover, the effect of the phosphor used on different substrates for latent fingerprint visualization was explored. All the results reveal that the phosphor was a good potential choice for latent fingerprint visualization.
Novel Sr 3 P 4 O 13 :Eu 3+ , Bi 3+ red phosphor is synthesized by a solid-state reaction method in air, and the crystal structures, fluorescence lifetimes and luminescence properties are investigated. The PLE band peaking at 394 nm due to 7 F 0 → 5 L 6 transition indicates that the phosphor can be effectively excited by near-UV InGaN chip, and five PL bands within the range 570–770 nm are attributed to 5 D 0 → 7 F J ( J =1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) transitions of Eu 3+ ion, respectively. The optimal Bi 3+ doping concentration is~5 mol%. PL intensity of Sr 3 P 4 O 13 :0.04Eu 3+ phosphor can be enhanced~7 times by codoping Bi 3+ ion due to the energy transfer between Eu 3+ and Bi 3+ ions. The luminous mechanism and energy transfer process are explained by energy level diagrams of Bi 3+ and Eu 3+ ions.
