An excellent OER electrocatalyst of cubic SrCoO3−δ prepared by a simple F-doping strategy

Wanhua Wang,Yi Yang,Daoming Huan,Likun Wang,Nai Shi,Yun Xie,Changrong Xia,Ranran Peng,Yalin Lu

Driven by the increasing global energy demand, the development of innovative energy conversion and storage systems is becoming more and more urgent. As one of the attractive means, water splitting has attracted widespread attention because of its great potential in storing electricity in the form of chemical fuel which also makes it a promising solution to the utilization of non-grid electricity generated by solar or wind. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is generally deemed as the key rate-limiting step of water splitting, and thus studying efficient OER electrocatalysts with a low overpotential and good stability is of vital importance. Here, we successfully prepared an OER catalyst with excellent electrochemical performance through a simple anion doping. Firstly, a stable cubic perovskite SrCoO3−δ was prepared by anion F-doping instead of traditional A and/or B site doping. Secondly, SrCoO2.85−δF0.15 demonstrates excellent OER activity superior to its parent hexagonal compound H-Sr2Co2O5 and those perovskites prepared via complicated A- and/or B-site doping. DFT calculations and XPS investigations reveal that the cubic structure and the highly oxidative oxygen species (O22−/O−) via F− doping jointly contribute to the better OER properties of SrCoO2.85−δF0.15. Our work brings forth a promising strategy to stabilize cubic structures from hexagonal ones via a simple anion doping strategy, which may open a new avenue for the development of even more effective OER catalysts and may be applied in many other fields related to structure transformation, in addition to energy and catalysis fields.

Enhancing activity and stability of Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ cathode by surface engineering with SrCoO3-δ nanoparticles in protonic ceramic fuel cells

Chenxiao Wang,Guangjun Zhang,Qiang Xue,Xiaoyu Zhang,Ting Chen,Lang Xu,Shaorong Wang

Surface engineering has been considered as a promising technology to enhance the cathode's oxygen reduction reaction kinetics (ORR) for protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). In this work, the infiltrated SrCoO 3-δ (SCO) nanoparticles are incorporated onto the Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3-δ (BSCF) cathode via the surface engineering. The effect of infiltration volume on the distribution density of nanoparticles for electrochemical performance is investigated. The polarization resistance (R p ) of 2 μL SCO-BSCF symmetrical cell shows a value of 0.108 Ω cm 2 at 700 °C in dry air, and exhibit higher stability than the bare BSCF cathode in wet atmospheres. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that SCO-BSCF facilitates the oxygen hydrogenation process. Molecular dynamics (MD) also indicate that the SCO nanoparticles are beneficial to the oxygen adsorption. Furthermore, the PCFC with 2 μL SCO-BSCF cathode achieves the maximum power density of 938.55 mW cm −2 at 700 °C. These findings suggest that the 2 μL SCO-BSCF could potentially be utilized as a cathode material for PCFCs.

Sc-doped SrCoO3-δ cathode with enhanced oxygen reduction reaction catalytic activity and stability for low -temperature solid oxide fuel cell

Jie Gao,Hui Huang,Hang Chen,Dan Zheng,Yifan Yin,Hao Wang,Baoyuan Wang

SrCoO 3-δ (SCO) as a perovskite material delivers enormous potential in electrolyte application for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) due to its high mixed conductivity and excellent catalytic activity toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. However, SCO is suffering from the drawback of bad thermal stability at high temperatures, which limits its practical development. In our study, the doping strategy of Sc 3+ is adapted to enhance the stability and promote the ORR catalytic activity of SCO cathode. The perovskite material SrSc χ Co 1-χ O 3-δ (SS χ CO, χ=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) is synthesized by solid phase method and used as the cathode to fabricate the fuel cell. The crystal structure, oxygen transport performance, electrical conductivity and stability of the SS χ CO serial cathode are characterized. The results show that the Sc 3+ doping strategy can significantly improve the phase structure and electrochemical stability of SCO, and further facilitate ionic conduction. Among the SS χ CO serial cathode, the material with 0.2 Sc doping exhibits the lowest polarization impedance (0.35 Ω cm 2 ) at 550 °C, highlighting its superior catalytic activity toward the ORR. Notably, the fuel cell fabricated from this optimized material achieves an impressive maximum power density of 748 mW cm −2 .

High stability cubic perovskite Sr0.9Y0.1Co1-xFexO3-δ oxygen evolution by phase control and electrochemical reconstruction

Hongyuan Song,Yijia Pang,Linjie Dong,Kun Dong,Haorong Wu,Liangwei Chen,Bin Liu,Zhenhua Ge,Lan Yu

Transition metal oxides are considered ideal electrocatalyst materials due to their low cost and high intrinsic activity. Among them, SrCoO 3- δ has received increasing attention due to its multi-phase structure and tunable electronic properties, though its OER reaction kinetics and catalysis stability are unsatisfactory. Herein, based on a simple one-step solid-state reaction method, we use a small amount of rare earth Y ions (10 %) to transform H-SCO 2.52 from a hexagonal structure to a stable cubic perovskite Sr 0.9 Y 0.1 CoO 3− δ . While broadening the atomic ratio of Co and Fe in the B-site under the cubic perovskite Sr 0.9 Y 0.1 Co 1- x Fe x O 3− δ ( x = 0–1), the relationship between the B-site electronic state, oxygen vacancies, and OER performance has been explored. Sr 0.9 Y 0.1 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3− δ with a high concentration of oxygen vacancies, exhibits the lowest overpotential of 277 mV and maintains stability at 10 mA cm −2 for 88 h. The valence states of Fe and Co atoms in SYC0.2F0.8 O are optimized (Fe 2+ ∼50.81 %, Co 2+ ∼19.39 %), and the oxygen evolution activity is enhanced by electrochemical reconfiguration to form high-valence Fe and Co ions. Selective leaching of Sr ions via electrochemical surface reconstruction activates FeOOH and CoOOH amorphous layer active sites on the catalyst surface, significantly enhancing reaction kinetics.

M-O-M bond mediated three-dimensional materials accelerates photoelectrochemical kinetics across length scales and timescales

Li Fu,Zhiwei Li,Xiaoying Shang,Wei Zhang

Reasonable design and couple of efficient co-catalysts on photoanodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are crucial for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, the interaction principles and charge transport mechanisms at the interface remain unclear. Herein, SrCoO 3-δ perovskite single-crystal quantum dots (PSC QDs) are coupled onto the BiVO 4 surface via M-O-M bonds, forming a three-dimensional porous topological network structure. The band alignment between BiVO 4 and SrCoO 3-δ is favorable for charge carrier separation. The interfacial field in BiVO 4 /SrCoO 3-δ via M-O-M bonds facilitates the redistribution of charges by detailed experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The enhanced band bending at the interface promotes efficient charge separation and fast hole transfer. The introduction of SrCoO 3-δ PSC QDs modulates the electronic structure for BiVO 4 , inducing an increase in the electron density near the Bi/V sites. The p-type SrCoO 3-δ , with Co 3 + -O 2- -Co 4+ double exchange interactions, improves conductivity and provides active Co sites for OER, reducing the reaction energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) (*O→*OOH) and thus facilitating rapid water oxidation. A significant photocurrent density of 5.05 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. REH is achieved for the BiVO 4 /SrCoO 3-δ photoanode. Meanwhile, temporal and spatial evolution for charge carrier transfer kinetics and OER dynamics were systematically investigated for the BiVO 4 /SrCoO 3-δ photoanode. This work sheds new insights into the design and understanding of efficient co-catalysts for solar water splitting.

Surface regulation of perovskite oxides with cation preference for efficient trifunctional electrocatalysts

Ruoqi Zong,Xiaobing Wu,Sung Yul Lim,Yusheng Fang,Bareera Raza,Yujuan Lu,Youkun Tao,Jing Shao

This study presents a straightforward chemical approach to induce cationic surface defects on SrCoO 3-δ (SCO) perovskites by selectively etching a-site Sr elements on the surface. The modified SCO-30 catalyst from this method exhibits an optimized thickness of cobalt-rich amorphous layer enriched with oxygen vacancies. This modification enhances the trifunctional catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline electrolyte. Importantly, the perovskite's structure remains unchanged during the surface engineering process. These findings underscore cationic defect engineering as an effective strategy for the rational design of high-performance electrocatalysts, showcasing potential applications in diverse electrochemical processes.
