Designing photocatalysts with a broad reaction to sunlight is crucial for efficient clean energy conversion. However, most catalysts reported so far can only respond to UV and visible light for photocatalysis, neglecting the utilization of near-infrared light, which accounts for almost 50 % of sunlight. In this study, we obtained Au nanoparticles (NPs) decorated porous hollow SrTiO 3 material rich in oxygen defects using an acid etching-assisted hydrothermal method. The formation of a Schottky heterojunction between Au and SrTiO 3−x with matched Fermi levels enhances the electron transfer ability of SrTiO 3−x . Additionally, Au NPs exhibit two types of surface plasma resonance (SPR) effects at 480 nm (transverse SPR) and 800 nm (longitudinal SPR in the near-infrared region) by absorbing specific photons emitted by SrTiO 3−x . The "hot" electrons of the photoexcited SPR state can be further injected into the CB of SrTiO 3−x . Furthermore, the local electromagnetic field around the SPR-enhanced Au NPs effectively promotes the excitation and transfer kinetics of photoelectrons, allowing more "hot" electrons to participate in the photocatalytic reaction. Besides, the unique hollow porous structure of the catalyst ensures multiple reflections of sunlight within SrTiO 3−x . As a result, the hydrogen production efficiency of Au-SrTiO 3−x under near-infrared (NIR) and UV–vis-NIR light irradiation reaches 850 and 3206 μmol h −1 g −1 , with apparent quantum efficiency of 6.4 % and 7.2 % at 820 nm and 420 nm, respectively. The possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on thorough systematic experimental analysis and theoretical calculations.
Osteomyelitis is a refractory bacterial infection of bone, presenting significant clinical management challenges due to its limited therapeutic outcome. Here, we developed heterojunction-structured sub-1 nm copper oxide-decorated strontium titanate nanosheets (Cu-STO NSs), which integrate piezocatalytic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation with augmented copper-induced bacterial death for synergistic osteomyelitis treatment. Under ultrasound (US) irradiation, the oxygen vacancies and heterojunction structure of Cu-STO NSs facilitate the separation of piezo-generated electron–hole pairs while reducing energy barriers, thereby enhancing ROS generation. This process is augmented by the US-accelerated Cu 2+ /Cu + redox cycling, which enables sustained hydroxyl radicals supply via Fenton-like reactions. The US-driven piezocatalytic action simultaneously enhances bacterial membrane permeability, facilitating intracellular copper overload and thereby triggering copper-induced metabolic toxicity in Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Subsequent release of bioactive Cu and Sr ions from Cu-STO NSs significantly upregulates osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells. In rat osteomyelitis, Cu-STO NSs achieve efficient bacterial eradication while stimulating on-demand bone regeneration. This work thus presents a non-invasive, spatiotemporal controlled copper-induced bacterial death strategy that concurrently addresses antibacterial and osteogenic challenges in infected bone regeneration. (AgNbO 3 ) 1− x (SrTiO 3 ) x samples were successfully employed as photocatalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light. The samples were characterized by a series of techniques, including X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, UV–Vis spectrophotometry , and electrochemistry technology. The band gaps of (AgNbO 3 ) 1− x (SrTiO 3 ) x solid solutions can be tuned continuously from 3.21 to 2.65 eV and the flat-band potentials ( V fb ) can be shifted positively from −0.79 to −0.31 V vs. SHE when x decreased from 1 to 0. Band positions of (AgNbO 3 ) 1− x (SrTiO 3 ) x samples were further testified by density functional theory, suggesting that the band gap narrowing of the solid solutions derived from the hybridization of (Ti 3d and Nb 4d) and (O 2p and Ag 4d) orbital. The photocatalytic activities of samples for H 2 evolution with Pt cocatalyst were evaluated in aqueous methanol solution under visible light irradiation . The highest photocatalytic activity was obtained at (AgNbO 3 ) 0.25 (SrTiO 3 ) 0.75 . Photocatalytic activity in hydrogen evolution of these solid solutions proved to be closely dependent on band structures .
