Long-lived thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emission has gained extensive attention due to its potential application in information encryption, illumination, and bioimaging. However, developing visible light-excited TADF materials is still a significant challenge. Herein, visible light triggered TADF emission was achieved by embedding chlorine doped carbon dots (Cl-CDs) into a g-C3N4 nanosheet matrix through a simple microwave treatment. The strong electron-withdrawing effect of the chlorine dropping redshifts the excitation wavelength, and the covalent bonds between Cl-CDs and the matrix significantly stabilize the triplet state. Green TADF with a peak at 520 nm could be obtained in the Cl-CD composite when excited by the UV to visible light, and the afterglow signal can be observed by the naked eye for up to 5 s after a mobile phone flashlight irradiation. The composite also exhibited temperature-responsive color stability under UV light irradiation. Consequently, the Cl-CD composite was successfully employed in concepts of information encryption and single-component time delay WLED development. This research provides materials and strategies that may motivate the visible light-excited TADF applied in advanced information encryption and illumination areas.

The confined synthesis of carbon dots (CDs) in solid matrixes is a promising avenue for developing new afterglow materials. Benefiting from the advantages of the sol–gel preparation of nanoporous glass, we report transparent glass-confined CDs with tunable afterglow luminescence. Switchable thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of CDs were achieved by adjusting the sintering temperature and ion doping. Our findings reveal that with an increase in sintering temperature from 500 °C to 600 °C, the energy gap (ΔEST) of CD-nanoporous glass (NG) increased from 0.05 eV to 0.21 eV, while the lifetime increased from 329 ms to 548 ms, which is attributed to the enhanced carbonization degree of the CDs. Pb2+ doping is also shown to achieve switchable TADF and RTP of glass-confined CDs attributed to the alteration of interfacial interactions between the glass and confined CDs. This design concept introduces a new perspective for developing transparent afterglow materials for various unique phosphorescence applications.

Luminescent materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties have attracted considerable interest for their promising applications in light-emitting and display devices and fluorescent chemosensors. Coumarin and its derivatives are one of the most attractive chromophores due to their excellent properties, such as high fluorescence quantum yield, large Stokes shift, less toxicity, ease of modification and visible wavelength emission. A coumarin-based AIE-active red fluorogen was designed and synthesised. It was found that CDPA exhibits AIE property, red emission, self-assembly and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) in the solid state.

Improving operational stability for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) is a hotspot in scientific research. It is proposed that silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge) can exhibit hyperconjugation effects and participate in conjugated systems, thereby stabilizing molecules’ excited and polarized states. Herein, the importance of incorporating Si and Ge in multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters is revealed to improve their luminescence efficiency and intrinsic stability. Computational studies show that introducing Si and Ge atoms can strengthen the C−Si and C−Ge bonds due to the hyperconjugation effect, resulting in higher bond dissociation energies and molecular photostability. With the efficient spin-vibronic coupling and spin-orbital coupling, the flexible conformations of the emitters facilitate the spin-flip processes by enriching the characters and density of their excited states. A maximum external quantum efficiency of 30.0% for BN -Ge -based blue-emitting OLEDs, with (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage) CIE y ≤ 0.18 is realized. In particular, the LT 90 at 1000 cd m −2 of 48.3 and 7.1 h is achieved for BN-Si -based and BN-Ge -based OLEDs, respectively, using the developed deuterated SiCzCz-d 15 and SiTriCz2-d 16 as the hole-transporting and host materials. It is anticipated that the study will provide insights into the design of group IV element-containing multiple-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescent emitters for optoelectronics applications.

Multiple-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) emitters are attractive candidates for high-definition OLED displays owing to their narrowband emission and high efficiency. However, most reported through-space charge-transfer (TSCT) MR-TADF compounds emit in the green region and suffer from limited operational stability, leaving deep-blue, narrowband MR-TADF emitters underexplored. Herein, we report a series of TSCT MR-TADF emitters based on an anthracene linker and U-shaped molecular confinement. By incorporating an extended anthracene bridge, carbazolyl substitution, and targeted deuteration, this molecular design modulates TSCT character, suppresses high-frequency vibrational modes, and enhances molecular rigidity. These compounds exhibit saturated blue to green emission with photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) over 90%, full widths at half maximum (FWHMs) of approximately 30 nm in thin films, and reverse intersystem crossing rate constants (k RISC ) values up to 1.2 × 10 5 s −1 . D-U-OBN-tCz enabled a deep-blue non-sensitized TADF OLED with an EQE of up to 20% and CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.07). These findings demonstrate an effective molecular design platform for realizing color-pure and operationally stable deep-blue MR-TADF emitters for OLED displays.

Graphical A pair of organic enantiomers with aggregation-induced emission and circularly polarized thermally activated delayed fluorescence properties have been developed successfully. Furthermore, it is found that their crystals can emit strong blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence and produce bright sky-blue mechanoluminescence and remarkable mechanofluorochromism under the stimuli of force. The development of circularly polarized thermally activated delayed fluorescence (CP-TADF) luminogens with stimuli-response characteristics remains challenging. Herein, a pair of organic enantiomers, S -CzTA and R -CzTA, with aggregation-induced emission properties, have been successfully developed by introducing chiral 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene and carbazole to phthalimide. They present CP-TADF properties in toluene solutions, giving dissymmetric factors of 0.84×10 −3 and −1.03×10 −3 , respectively. In the crystalline state, both S -CzTA and R -CzTA can emit intense blue TADF and produce very bright sky-blue mechanoluminescence (ML) and remarkable mechanofluorochromism (MFC) under the stimuli of mechanical force. Single-crystal analysis and theoretical calculation results suggest that their ML activities are probably associated with their chiral and polar molecular structures and unique non-centrosymmetric molecular packing modes. Furthermore, the MFC properties of the enantiomers likely originate from the destruction of crystal structure, leading to the planarization of molecular conformation. This work may provide helpful guidance for developing new CP-TADF materials with force-stimuli-responsive properties.

Temperature sensors with unique temperature-dependent luminescent properties have a great advantage to be used as noncontact luminescence thermometers especially in biological applications . To date, most of the photoluminescent materials for temperature sensing are based on the temperature-dependent luminescent intensity or short-lived emission lifetime, which suffer from the interference from excitation power, sample concentration, or background fluorescence. Herein, we report a carbon dot (CD)-based nanocomposite showing distinct long-lived thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) property with the lifetime of 30.85 ms at room temperature and under an air atmosphere. Notably, the TADF emission presents variable long-lived lifetimes under different temperatures, which demonstrates its promising application in lifetime thermal sensing. The interaction between the functional groups of CD and SiO 2 matrix by forming Si–O–C bonds plays a key role for the synthesis process, which further improves the confinement of vibrations and rotation and harvests the triplet state efficiently. This work introduces a new perspective to prepare nanothermometers, which opens up the potential application of CD-based materials with long-lived TADF emission in highly sensitive temperature sensing with their convenience and high efficiency.

A multifunctional TADF molecule DMAC-DPS was introduced through antisolvent-assisted post-treatment to achieve in situ surface engineering of quasi-2D perovskite films. • The sulfone (S O) groups in DMAC-DPS strongly coordinate with undercoordinated Pb²⁺ ions at the perovskite surface and grain boundaries, reducing deep-level defects and nonradiative recombination. • DMAC-DPS modulates the surface potential, optimizes energy-level alignment, balances charge injection, and suppresses leakage current and ion migration. Consequently, the maximum external quantum efficiency increases from 9.0% to 24.21%. Metal-halide perovskites have emerged as promising emitters for next-generation light-emitting diodes owing to their outstanding optoelectronic properties. Surface and interfacial defects are critical bottlenecks limiting the commercialization of metal halide perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). In this work, a multifunctional thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecule, bis[4-(9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine)phenyl]sulfone (DMAC-DPS), was introduced via antisolvent-assisted post-treatment to realize in situ surface engineering of quasi-two-dimensional PEA₂Csₙ₋₁PbₙBr₃ₙ₊₁ perovskite emissive layers. The results show that the S O in DMAC-DPS forms strong coordination interactions with undercoordinated Pb 2 + species on the perovskite surface, leading to effective defect passivation. Meanwhile, post-treatment triggers secondary crystallization of perovskite films, which endows the film with enlarged grain size, reduced grain boundary density, and optimized crystallinity, albeit with a slight increase in surface roughness. Benefiting from the superior morphological and crystalline properties, the modified films deliver strengthened photoluminescence emission, extended carrier lifetime and inhibited non-radiative recombination. Further interfacial characterizations demonstrate that the DMAC-DPS modifier effectively regulates surface potential, optimizes energy level alignment, facilitates balanced charge injection, and simultaneously suppresses leakage current as well as detrimental ion migration. As a result, the maximum external quantum efficiency of the PeLEDs increases markedly from 9.0% to 24.21%, accompanied by a reduced turn-on voltage, enhanced luminance, and improved spectral stability. This work presents a facile and effective interfacial-engineering strategy based on antisolvent post-treatment, providing useful guidance for the development of efficient and stable green PeLEDs. An organic compound composed of a phenothiazine (PTZ) electron donor moiety and 4-fluoro diphenyl sulfone (FDPS) electron acceptor unit, PTZ-FDPS, which exhibited simultaneously polymorphism, aggregation-induced emission, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and mechanochromic luminescence (MCL), was reported. PTZ-FDPS formed two different aggregates: rod-like crystal (C1) and block crystal (C2). Crystallographic results indicated that C1 and C2 belonged to a quasi-equatorial conformer and a quasi-axial conformer, respectively. Due to the transformation of molecular conformation under external force, C2 exhibited significant MCL performance compared with C1. More intriguingly, the fluorescence of PTZ-FDPS nanoparticles (NPs) exhibited a clear responsiveness to the tumor cell microenvironment. Initially, the NPs emitted predominantly green fluorescence, corresponding to a quasi-equatorial conformation. However, upon cellular uptake, their fluorescence shifted to a blue-green dual emission, indicating a conformational transition from quasi-equatorial to quasi-axial. As the tumor cells grew, the fluorescence gradually reverted from blue-green dual emission back to green, suggesting a return of the molecular conformation from quasi-axial to quasi-equatorial. This study offers a valuable strategy for the design and application of multifunctional materials.

The room temperature afterglow (RTA) of carbon dots (CDs) and their wide-ranging application prospects have attracted significant attention. However, most of the synthesis and regulation methods for multicolor CDs-based RTA materials are complex. Therefore, it is still a challenge to obtain a series of CDs-based RTA materials with broad and tunable emission wavelengths via a simple preparation method using the same organic precursor and matrix. In this study, a series of CDs@Al 2 O 3 materials with ultra-broad afterglow emission range (376 ∼ 619 nm) were prepared by regulating the reaction temperature through a one-step calcination method. High-temperature consumption led to a decrease of surface functional groups and conjugation size of CDs, resulting in the gradually blue-shifted emission from red to UV region. We also discovered a unique phenomenon where the afterglow emission mode of the material shifted from room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) to thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) as the temperature increased, attributed to the stabilization of the excited triplet state from the strengthened crystallinity of Al 2 O 3 matrix. Furthermore, a continuous emission at ∼ 471 nm attributed to the oxygen defects of the matrix was observed. Multiple anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, and fingerprint detection are demonstrated based on the unique RTA properties of CDs@Al 2 O 3 .

Compared with the large number of single-function materials such as aggregation-induced emission (AIE), mechanochromic luminescence (MCL), or thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters, multifunctional emitting materials offer more opportunities in practical applications. In this report, we provide a simple molecular design strategy towards the conversion of a MCL building block to a multifunctional emitter. Through altering the substituent sites and increasing the number of electron donors and steric hindrance on a normal MCL backbone benzo[ d , e ]benzo[4,5]imidazo[2,1- a ]isoquinolin-7-one, a novel multifunctional material 10,11-bis-(4-diphenylamino-phenyl)-benzo[ d , e ]benzo[4,5]imidazo[2,1- a ]isoquinolin-7-one (10,11-2TPA-BBI) is designed and synthesized. 10,11-2TPA-BBI exhibits simultaneous polymorphism, AIE, MCL and TADF properties. It can form four different aggregate species: yellow solid (YS) and orange solid (OS), orange flake-shaped crystal (OC), and red prism-like crystal (RC). Among them, because of the small energy gaps (Δ E ST s < 0.3 eV) between the singlet and triplet excited states, OS, OC and RC exhibit TADF properties, while YS show normal fluorescence characteristics with a large Δ E ST of 0.33 eV. OS can be reversibly transformed into YS upon external stimuli, which can be attributed to the emission switch between local excited state and charge transfer state. Crystallographic study indicates that the bulky structure and weak intermolecular interactions account for polymorphism and AIE properties. This work will provide a simple molecular design strategy for multifunctional materials.

This work employs an ultrafast microwave-assisted synthesis to achieve efficient and uniform Te 4+ doping in Cs 2 ZrCl 6 within 30 min at 60 °C, addressing key challenges of slow kinetics and inhomogeneous distribution prevalent in conventional methods. Structural and optical analyses confirm that temperature and concentration critically govern dopant incorporation and luminescent properties. Temperature-dependent spectroscopy reveals undoped Cs 2 ZrCl 6 hosts dual self-trapped excitons (Zr-STE1 and Zr-STE2) exhibiting excitation-dependent thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) with a minimal singlet-triplet gap (0.060 eV). Te 4+ doping introduces efficient [TeCl 6 ] 2− emitters and modifies energy transfer pathways. Lifetime analysis demonstrates that host TADF, especially synergistic dual-channel activation under 254 nm excitation, enables highly efficient (>83.1%) resonance energy transfer to [TeCl 6 ] 2− centers. Microwave optimization, achieving homogeneous shallow doping, yields an exceptional photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 95.43% for Cs 2 ZrCl 6 :Te, significantly outperforming conventional syntheses. The material exhibits outstanding stability under thermal, UV, humidity, cycling, and ambient conditions, with prototype LEDs demonstrating superior reliability. These findings establish a synergistic design strategy combining controlled doping and TADF-mediated energy transfer for high-performance luminescence.
