In this study, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was used to fabricate a Z-scheme BiVO 4 -(rGO-Cu 2 O) photocatalyst for the degradation of Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) under sunlight irradiation. The photocatalyst was synthesized using a three-step method BiVO 4 -(rGO-Cu 2 O) photocatalyst with an rGO loading of 1% and (rGO-Cu 2 O) to BiVO 4 ratio of 50% achieved the best degradation effect for TBBPA removal. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) confirmed that the charge transfer path of BiVO 4 -(rGO-Cu 2 O) follows that of Z-scheme photocatalysts. Moreover, the addition of rGO increases the charge transfer efficiency. High performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) was used to detect and analyze intermediate products, allowing the proposal of the main degradation pathway of TBBPA. Photogenerated electrons of BiVO 4 -(rGO-Cu 2 O) were then transferred into the conduction band of Cu 2 O. Cu 2 O is located in the surface layer, which has the most effective contact area with pollutants, and therefore has a good outcome for the photocatalytic reduction of TBBPA. Photogenerated electrons (e − ) and hydroxyl radicals (∙OH) are the main factors affecting TBBPA degradation. The degradation process of TBBPA includes electron reduction debromination , hydroxylation , and β-cleavage. In our work, BiVO 4 -(rGO-Cu 2 O) was successfully synthesized to degrade TBBPA; this study brings forth a novel approach for the degradation of halogenated organic pollutants using a Z-scheme photocatalytic composite.

In this study, Fe/FeS@SiO 2 yolk-shell particles (Fe/FeS@SiO 2 YSPs) were synthesized, characterized, and applied to tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) removal in simulated groundwater. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Brunauer Emmett Teller results revealed that Fe/FeS@SiO 2 YSPs possess special structures, including active cores, mesoporous networks, shells, hollow cavities and a large surface area (85 m 2 /g vs. 8 m 2 /g) compared to Fe/FeS. The mobility of the synthesized particles in porous media was simulated with sand column experiments. Fe/FeS@SiO 2 YSPs showed a much better transportability (83.02% of particles successfully transported through the column) than Fe/FeS particles (only 1.68%), related to the better suspension stability and much lower particle surface charge (−22.7 mV vs. −7.6 mV) at neutral pH. Improved TBBPA reduction performance in synthetic solution was observed for Fe/FeS@SiO 2 YSPs over bare Fe/FeS. The transformation pathway of TBBPA was studied in detail, revealing the formation of tri-BBPA, di-BBPA, mono-BBPA and BPA as the main products. In brief, thanks to the hollow mesoporous silica spheres (HMSS) coated on the surface of Fe/FeS particles, Fe/FeS@SiO 2 YSPs showed an enhanced dispersibility, transportability and degradation of TBBPA in simulated groundwater. The results in this study proved that Fe/FeS@SiO 2 YSPs are a promising material for in situ remediation of TBBPA in soil and groundwater.

The capability to understand and construct synthetic microbiomes is crucial in biotechnological innovation and application. Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is an emerging pollutant, and the understanding of its biodegradation is very limited. Here, a top-down approach was applied for the enrichment of TBBPA-degrading microbiomes from natural microbiomes. Ten keystone taxa correlated to TBBPA degradation and their co-occurrence interactions were identified by the dissection of the degrading microbiomes. Those keystone taxa were targeted and cultivated, and the genomic information was obtained by genome sequencing of strains and metagenomic binning. The keystone bacterial strains showed efficient degradation of TBBPA, and L -amino acids were important co-metabolic substrates to promote the degradation. Guided by this knowledge, a bottom-up approach was applied to design and construct a simplified synthetic consortium SynCon2, that consisted of four strains. The SynCon2 demonstrated efficient TBBPA degradation activity and soil bioremediation. Our study demonstrates the importance of the application of multiple tools in understanding the functions of microbiomes and provides an integrated top-down and bottom-up strategy for the construction of synthetic microbiomes with various applications.

A biomass-based carbon fiber/metal–organic frameworks (MOFs/CF) electrode, with excellent electro-catalytic activity, was used for design the electro-Fenton (EF) process. The carbon fiber membrane (CF) was prepared from regenerated cotton fiber membrane through carbonization, and the MOFs were successfully introduced on the surface of the CF by the solvothermal method to obtain MOFs/CF electrode. Through the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the continuous on-site generation of H 2 O 2 was achieved over the MOFs/CF electrode. Moreover, the MOFs could efficiently catalyse H 2 O 2 to form hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which can degrade organic pollutants in the EF process. Excellent electrocatalytic performance was exhibited when the electrode was applied to degrade tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). The total organic carbon removal efficiency for TBBPA reached 80% in 240 min, which demonstrated TBBPA was also rapidly mineralized by the constructed EF system.
