Understanding the differences in the adsorption behaviors of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) on soils is critical for assessing their environmental mobility and risks. This study investigated the adsorption characteristics and patterns of TBBPA/S across various soil types. Adsorption kinetics analysis indicated that the adsorption of TBBPA/S on soils followed pseudo-secondary-order kinetics. Isotherm results revealed that the Langmuir model described TBBPA adsorption more accurately, while the Freundlich model was a better fit for TBBPS adsorption, suggesting distinct adsorption mechanisms due to their differing properties. Correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) were performed to identify the key soil physicochemical properties influencing TBBPA/S adsorption. The results showed that TBBPA adsorption was inversely correlated with soil pH and positively correlated with clay content. In contrast, TBBPS adsorption displayed negative correlations with soil pH and sand content, and positive correlations with amorphous iron, amorphous aluminum, and free iron content. Further analysis of different treated soil fractions demonstrated that soil organic matter dominated the adsorption of TBBPA/S, with humic acid playing a more significant role than humin. The adsorption behavior characteristics of TBBPA/S on different soils provide fundamental data for understanding their environmental fate in soil systems.

Herein, we compared the developmental and neurotoxic effects of Bisphenol S (BPS) and Tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) on zebrafish embryos at their environmentally relevant concentrations. Both compounds induced dose-dependent malformations like delayed hatching, shortened somites, spinal curvature, and brain deformities. TBBPS was significantly more toxic (LC₅₀ = 5.73 mg/L) than BPS (LC₅₀ = 65.2 mg/L), with the 24-48 hours post-fertilization window being most sensitive. TBBPS caused more spinal/circulatory defects, while BPS induced more eye/pericardial issues. Target prediction identified 228 genes for BPS and 165 for TBBPS, both enriched in FoxO, P53, and hormone signaling. BPS primarily affected MAPK and neurotrophin pathways, whereas TBBPS targeted PI3K-Akt and receptor-mediated carcinogenesis pathways. Both triggered brain/spinal oxidative stress, reduced neurogenesis, increased apoptosis, and impaired neurotransmission, evidenced by decreased serotonin (5-HT) and suppressed acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, leading to abnormal behavior. Hub gene analysis revealed distinct mechanisms: BPS disrupted neuronal proliferation via genes like Cdk2 , Cdk6 , Tyms; TBBPS interfered with the cell cycle via Plk4, Ccnb2. RT-qPCR confirmed these differences. TBBPS exhibits stronger developmental and neurotoxicity than BPS, indicating bromination significantly increases toxicity, providing a basis for environmental risk assessment of bisphenol analogs.

In this study, a novel strategy was exploited to prepare an ultra-efficiency NiCoMn-layered double-hydroxide (NiCoMn-LDH) catalyst for the recycle of valuable elements in spent lithium-ion batteries. Based on the developed hydrometallurgical leaching method, avoiding the drawback of separation and purification procedures, it was stated that the elements of Ni, Co, and Mn could be synchronously extracted from the spent cathode powder in less than 20 min with leaching efficiencies exceeding 98.9%. NiCoMn-LDH with a uniform flake structure was synthesized successfully from the leaching solution by a co-precipitation method and the element precipitation efficiencies all exceeded 99% in the preparation process. NiCoMn-LDH exhibited a great tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) degradation performance as a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator, TBBPS could be degraded completely in less than 100 s with an extremely low dosage (catalyst 10 mg/L and PMS 0.1 mmol/L, pH 5.6), and NiCoMn-LDH still kept a good stability after multiple reuse. Besides, ECOSAR predicted the toxicity of degradation products declined with the decrease of bromine substituents, reflecting the environmental friendliness of NiCoMn-LDH from spent lithium-ion batteries.

2′,2′,4,4′-tetrabromo diphenyl ether (BDE-47), one of the most abundant congeners of commercial pentaBDE utilized as flame retardants , has been phased out of production due to its potential neural toxicity and endocrine disrupting activities, and yet still present in the environment. Several alternatives to BDE-47, including tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS), tetrachlorobisphenol A (TCBPA) and decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), are presently employed without restrictions and their potential toxic effects on human neural development are still unclear. In this study, we utilized a human neural stem cell (hNSC)-based system to evaluate the potential developmental neurotoxic effects of the above-mentioned five chemicals, at environment and human exposure relevant concentrations. We found that those compounds slightly altered the expression of hNSC identity markers ( SOX2 , SOX3 and NES ), without impairing cell viability or proliferation, in part by either modulating glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3β) signaling (TBBPS, TCBPA and BDE-47), and slightly disturbing the NOTCH pathway (TBBPA, TBBPS and TCBPA). Moreover, the five chemicals seemed to alter hNSC differentiation by perturbing triiodothyronine (T3) cellular signaling. Thus, our findings suggest that the five compounds, especially TBBPS, TCBPA, and BDE-47, may affect hNSC self-renewal and differentiation abilities and potentially elicit neural developmental toxicity.
