We recently found that the introduction of benzene ring as connection block improved the thermal stability of glycerol carbonate derivatives. To further explore how polysubstitution on benzene influences their thermal stability, another two derivatives, benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid tris-(2-oxo-[1,3]dioxolan-4-ylmethyl) ester (BATE1) and benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylic acid tetrakis-(2-oxo-[1,3]dioxolan-4-ylmethyl) ester (BATE2), were synthesized and characterized by a combined TG–FTIR and theoretical calculation. TG results showed that both BATE1 and BATE2 had three weight loss stages. FTIR spectra of evolved gases and the bond dissociation energy for the two compounds indicated that during the pyrolysis process, the C C, C O bonds of five-membered cyclic carbonate fractured preferentially to produce volatile carbonates and CO 2 , and then the nearby C O bond of esters continued to crack to produce more fragments. Finally, benzene ring still remains in the solid pyrolysis products. Therefore, improving the thermal stability of compound cannot be achieved simply by increasing the number of substituents on the benzene ring.

Olive leaf extract pretreated by enzymolysis was selected for studying the thermal stability at different heating rates by thermogravimetric coupled with infrared spectroscopy (TG–FTIR) and nonisothermal theoretical analysis, and products analysis by pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py–GC–MS). Results revealed that thermal decomposition of ethyl acetate extract from olive leaf extract pretreated by enzymolysis (EAEEH) consisted of two steps and had a lower thermal stability. The nonisothermal decomposition kinetics mechanism of EAEEH was D3 model (three-dimensional diffusion, Jander equation, the first step) and F3 model (chemical reaction, n = 3, the second step). TG–IR showed –CH 3 , –C=C–, –OH, –C–O were continuously accelerated to produce, and evolved gas were CO 2 , water, CO and CH 4 at the end. In addition, it was found that there were mainly polyphenols with phenolic hydroxyl groups in the pyrolysis products by Py–GC–MS, and it was also explained for the thermal stability results. This will provide a theoretical guidance for thermal application of EAEEH in the safe natural food additives, cosmetic and medicine.

Facing the severe environmental and energy crisis, how to use solid waste cleanly and efficiently is imminent. In this study, coal slime and cellulose are used for co-combustion experiments. Coal slime and cellulose are tested at mass ratios of 10:0, 9:1, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, 1:9, and 0:10. When 10 % cellulose is added to the coal slime, the ignition temperature decreases by 169.3 °C, and the ignition characteristic index increased by 2.9 times. The addition of cellulose makes the comprehensive combustion performance of the sample increase exponentially. By analyzing the dominant reaction in the co-combustion process of coal slime and cellulose, the variance contribution rates of the first principal component and the second principal component are 67.84 and 29.18 %, respectively. Co-combustion of coal slime and cellulose enhances the release and combustion of early volatiles. In addition, the evolution law of gaseous products and the temperature dependence of gaseous products in the co-combustion process of coal slime and cellulose are analyzed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy, respectively. This study provides a theoretical basis for the large-scale application of co-combustion of coal slime and biomass.

The combustion of moxa floss was investigated by thermogravimetric/differential scanning calorimeter (TG/DSC), thermogravimetric/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) and an infrared radiation spectrum-detecting system. The average mass loss rate at the major stage of combustion was 1.08%/min with a peak at 7.86%/min. Moxa floss burning released the integral heat of 9188 mJ/mg from the temperature of 200 °C to 500 °C. The peak heat flow during char combustion stage was higher than those of other stages. The results indicated the combustion of moxa floss was a mild and slow process, releasing heat continuously and steadily. The infrared radiation spectra of burning moxa stick were in a range of 2.5–13.0 µm and showed double peaks at 3.75 µm and 8.75 µm. Thus, this study provided insight into why moxa floss biomass is the optimal material for thermal therapy and is beneficial for the development of electric thermal stimulation alternative.

The co-pyrolysis of petroleum coke with lignocellulosic biomass components offers a promising route for the high-value utilization of petroleum-refining by-products and sustainable biomass conversion. This study employs coupled Thermogravimetric analysis-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA-FTIR) to systematically examine the co-pyrolysis behaviour and interaction mechanisms between petroleum coke and model lignocellulosic components (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) across the temperature range 30–850 °C at heating rates of 5, 10, 15 and 20 °C·min −1 . The results demonstrate that the cellulose–petroleum coke system exhibits optimal volatile-release kinetics at 10 °C·min −1 , with a diffusion coefficient (D = 9.65 × 10 −10 min −2 °C −3 ) and a maximum mass-loss rate (DTG max = −1.47 %·min −1 ). In contrast, the lignin–petroleum coke system shows pronounced synergistic effects at high temperatures (>600 °C), as supported by activation energies of 57.60–84.14 kJ mol −1 and Gibbs free-energy changes (ΔG = 72.23–98.01 kJ mol −1 ), indicating catalytic and flame-retardant potential. Mechanistic insights reveal that lignocellulosic components exert phase-dependent modulation on pyrolysis dynamics, suppressing petroleum-coke hydration, fine-tuning volatile-diffusion kinetics and facilitating graphitization via co-carbonization pathways. These findings provide a scientific basis for the precise engineering of pyrolysis-product characteristics and advance the development of tailored thermochemical conversion strategies.

In this study, arabinose was selected as the model compound of hemicellulose . The pyrolysis experiments were conducted by combined thermogravimetry-Fourier infrared spectroscopy-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TG-FTIR-GC–MS) technique. The evolution of functional groups was observed. Experimental results indicated that the main gas products were H 2 O, CO 2 , and CH 4 . And volatiles also contained many furan derivatives, sugar derivatives, aromatic hydrocarbon derivatives, and other trace products. In addition, the quantum chemistry calculations were utilized to reveal the formation mechanisms and pathways of the significant products from arabinose pyrolysis. Initially, arabinose prefers to undergo a ring-opening reaction to form acyclic D-arabinose with the activation energy of 177.6 kJ/mol, which is the primary source of each product. Furfural (PD) is the most abundant furan derivative. The ring-condensation reaction first of arabinose and the isomerization reaction first of D-arabinose are the favorable paths to form it in terms of energy. The C1-C2 bond scission of D-arabinose is more favorable to form furan (PA) and formic acid . The dehydration mechanism first of arabinose is the dominant path to generate 2,7-dioxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-5-one (PE). The formation of acetic acid (PB) is kinetically and thermodynamically favorable. Once it is formed, it is easy to decompose into CO 2 and CH 4 . The formation of 2(5H)-furanone (PC) is restricted by the decarboxylation reaction of D-arabinose, which has a high energy barrier of 384.8 kJ/mol. To conclude, a deep understanding of the pyrolysis mechanism of arabinose could be obtained through the combination of experiments and quantum chemistry calculations.

As a crucial functional material in the continuous casting process, mould fluxes play a significant role in ensuring smooth operation and improving the quality of cast billets. To mitigate the environmental impact of fluorides in mould fluxes, TiO2 has been introduced as a network former to reduce viscosity and melting temperature. The formation of perovskite instead of cuspidine also contributes to controlled heat transfer. However, preventing the formation of titanium carbide (TiC) under high-temperature conditions remains challenging. Experimental results indicate that during heating, both CaO–SiO2–TiO2 and CaO–SiO2–CaF2–TiO2 slag systems react to form perovskite. TiO2 participates more readily in solid-state reactions with CaO than CaF2 does, thereby inhibiting the formation of cuspidine. Furthermore, in carbon-containing CaO–SiO2–TiO2 systems, TiC forms along with CO at elevated temperatures. It is revealed that TiC formation does not result from the direct reaction between TiO2 and C, but rather from the reaction between CaTiO3 and C. Under high-temperature carbon-rich conditions, carbon reduces perovskite to form TiC. Consequently, in contrast to fluorine-based fluxes, titanium-bearing mould fluxes require careful optimisation of carbon content to prevent TiC precipitation.

The pyrolytic characteristics of cellulose, cellobiose and glucose were examined by TG-FTIR combined with Py-GC–MS, in order to gain the effect of β -O-4 glycosidic bond on the pyrolysis process. In TG-FTIR analysis, two mass loss peaks were observed for cellobiose and glucose, indicating dehydration in low temperature stage and consequently intensive cracking of glycosidic bond and fragments for cellobiose. The samples were tested in Py-GC–MS at the temperature of 300, 500 and 900 °C according to their mass loss characteristics from TG-FTIR. Formation of furans from cellobiose, which involved the cracking of β -O-4 glycosidic bond, was prominent over other products, compared to that of cellulose and glucose. Four possible chemical pathways for the cleavage of β -O-4 glycosidic bond have been proposed with regard to the formation of furans and anhydrosugars from cellulose. Besides, another two reaction pathways leading to the formation of levoglucosan were also suggested.

The pyrolysis behaviors of l -tyrosine-based phthalonitrile(TPN) resin were investigated by thermogravimetric-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry-mass spectrometry (TG-FTIR-MS) and Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The small molecules produced during pyrolysis process of TPN resin were tracked in real time by TG-FTIR-MS. The larger molecules ( m / z > 40) from fast pyrolysis at 900 °C of the TPN resin using Py-GC/MS were identified. From TG-FTIR-MS and Py-GC/MS results, the production pathways of pyrolysis products such as CO 2 , CO, NH 3 , benzonitrile and phenol were analyzed. The possible pyrolysis mechanism of TPN resin under non-oxidizing gaseous environment was proposed. The results of this study provide the useful information for designing the molecular structure of l -tyrosine-based polymers which possessing high thermal stability.

Phospholipids, as key trace constituents of biodiesel, can have complex effects on the performance of biodiesel. Exploring the mechanism of their influence on the pyrolysis and oxidation characteristics of biodiesel is crucial for controlling the generation and emission of pollutants. To this end, this study employed TG-FTIR-MS experimental technology and the ReaxFF-MD simulation method to investigate the effects of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) on the activation energy ( E a ), gaseous product generation, and mechanism of Jatropha biodiesel pyrolysis and oxidation reactions. The results indicated that the addition of 400 ppm PE can reduce the pyrolysis E a of Jatropha biodiesel from 87.25 kJ/mol to 80.67 kJ/mol, consistent with simulated E a of 93.35 kJ/mol and 81.81 kJ/mol, respectively. This notably promoted the initial oxidation stage of the Jatropha biodiesel reaction, facilitating the generation of oxidation products such as CO and C 2 H 4 . In the pyrolysis reaction, PE promoted C 2 H 4 formation, primarily through reactions involving hydrocarbon small free radicals. In the oxidation reaction, the addition of PE increased the number and variety of active free radicals in the system, with the formation reactions of H 2 O and CH 2 O involving phosphorus-containing oxygen groups. Furthermore, a small amount of nitrogenous free radicals participates in the formation reactions of C 2 H 4 and CO.

Spent bleaching clay (SBC) and lignin wastes are generated from oil refining and paper industries, respectively. The complementary properties of these two types of waste enable synergistic effects in co-pyrolysis, thereby mitigating limitations characteristic of single-component pyrolysis. In this study, the co-pyrolysis behavior of the two wastes was explored at the microscopic molecular level using simultaneous TG-FTIR technology, coupled with fixed-bed pyrolysis experiments. The co-pyrolysis behavior was systematically investigated at the mass ratio of lignin and SBC (0 %L, 30 %L, 50 %L, 70 %L, and 100 %L) and different reaction temperatures (450, 500, 550, 600, and 650 °C). The results showed that the activation energy required for co-pyrolysis decreased at 50 %L and 70 %L ratios, as determined using FWO and KAS methods. The Ea required for co-pyrolysis decreased at 50 %L and 70 %L ratios. Specifically, the addition of 30 % SBC reduced the activation energy of lignin from 141.67 kJ/mol (KAS) and 146.41 kJ/mol (FWO) to 120.25 kJ/mol (KAS) and 126.04 kJ/mol (FWO), respectively. Furthermore, the 50 %L radio infrared absorbance of CH 4 and CO 2 was relatively strong due to the enhanced decarboxylation and demethoxylation reactions. Meanwhile, the fixed-bed co-pyrolysis experiment showed that the relative content of non-methoxy phenolics increased from 7.0 % to 10.6 % with bio-oil yield increasing from 27 % to 40 %, after adding 50 % SBC. Additionally, the interaction mechanism was proposed based on the TG-FTIR and fixed-bed pyrolysis experimental results. SBC served as a hydrogen donor to promote the thermal decomposition of lignin and improved the yields of phenol and alkylphenols. This work offers guidance for the synergistic conversion of renewable carbon sources with oily solid wastes.

Catalytic co-pyrolysis of biomass and hydrogen donors is one of the important ways to improve the quality of bio-oil. The hydrogen transfer pathways in co-pyrolysis are significant yet remain vague. In this study, an isotopic labeling method to label glucose (G) with deuterium (D) atoms was used to trace the hydrogen. The results show the catalysts influence the hydrogen transformation significantly and selectively. The shift of the infrared (IR) peaks proves that the hydrogen atoms in products - phenols, alcohols, carboxylic acids, aldehydes, and olefins contain both hydrogen from polypropylene (PP) and deuterium from G. While the hydrogen in aromatic rings, - CH 3 and - CH 2 all come from polypropylene. Furthermore, the deuterium atoms from G only enter the olefin products with catalyst potassium chloride (KCl) or activated carbon (AC). On the other hand, the oxygenated compound products mainly contain hydrogen atoms from polypropylene with any of the three catalysts. The potassium chloride helps the hydrogen from polypropylene transfer to the products of mainly phenols, aldehydes and alcohols. The AC transfers the hydrogen from polypropylene to the products of carboxylic acid, aldehydes, and phenols. For the ZSM-5, it helps the hydrogen from polypropylene transfer to the products of carboxylic acid and aldehydes. The results of this study are useful for improving the effective hydrogen content of the mixed pyrolysis reaction of biomass.
