The old-fashioned yet effective trans-printing method was adopted to prepare Janus fabric in the study. Nonwoven cotton fabric was firstly immersed in tetrahydrofuran solution containing P(DMAEMA-co-TMSPMA), a polymer synthesized by copolymerization between N, N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate (TMSPMA), followed by thermal treatment, thus endowing the fabric with the demulsification property. Next, one side of the above prepared fabric was overlapped and rolled with donor fabric containing PDMS-g-TMOS, a polymer synthesized by thiol/ene click reaction between multi-vinyl poly(dimethylsiloxane) (vinyl-PDMS) and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMOS). The PDMS-g-TMOS polymer infiltrated into the fabric cured with P(DMAEMA-co-TMSPMA) to a certain depth, followed by thermal treatment. Thus, the resultant fabric had both the superhyrophilic side for oil coalescence and the superhyrophobic side for oil permeation. The Janus fabric structure was confirmed by metalloscope, unidirectional water transport property (UDWT), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). When the prepared fabric was used to separate model oil hexadecane (HD) from oil-in-water emulsion, the maximum separation speed was 134.5 kg h−1 m−2. The recovery rate of HD respectively reached 96.0% after 60 min and 99.9% after 150 min. The Janus fabric prepared by the trans-printing method is particularly suitable for industrial production and of great industrial value.

In the entrapment of enzymes by sol-gel method, the special procedures for obtaining the unique structure of xerogel are sometimes destructive to enzymes, while the internal structure of xerogels is easily broken. To solve the above problems, we present an economical, bio-friendly procedure for the entrapment of Candida antarctica lipase B in silica xerogel. In this procedure, an encapsulation-structured enzyme-carrying silica xerogel was produced by controlling the evaporation rate of the solvent at ambient pressure during drying, while tetramethoxysilane and methyltrimethoxysilane were used as the co-precursors. The xerogel synthesis was modified and optimized for improving the stability and reusability of the enzyme, while the xerogel characteristic structure was preserved. Moreover, the effects of the co-precursors amount on the mechanical strength, pore structure, hydrophobicity, enzyme loading, and enzyme stability of the enzyme-carrying silica xerogels were systematically investigated. And the best performance was observed at the co-precursors content of 30.28 wt%. Finally, the catalytic performance of the enzyme-carrying silica xerogels on the transesterification of n -butanol with ethyl acetate was demonstrated.

Transparent silica aerogels significantly enhanced solar energy collection by allowing more sunlight penetration while reducing radiation scattering. This work investigated how catalyst type, catalyst concentration, and precursor concentration influenced the structural, optical, and thermal properties of silica aerogels. By optimizing these parameters, a balance between rapid hydrolysis and polymerization was achieved, resulting in a uniform porous structure with reduced scattering and improved transparency. The aerogels demonstrated a high solar-weighted transmittance (83 %) and low thermal conductivity (0.023 W/(m·K)), which remained stable after hydrophobic treatment. These findings provided valuable insights into optimizing silica aerogels for solar photothermal applications.

Rationally designing highly active electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) without relying on precious metals is critical for promoting the application of metal–air batteries and fuel cells. As a promising alternative to traditional Pt-group-based catalysts, transition-metal oxides (TMOs) with high corrosion resistivity and diverse structure configuration have exhibited great catalytic potential. However, the current favorable ORR performance of TMOs has often been achieved through their coupling with engineered carbons such as graphene and carbon nanotubes, which can obscure the intrinsic catalytic potential of TMOs. To promote TMO-based catalysts for ORR applications, comprehensively analyzing their catalytic properties and screening promising TMO-based parent materials is crucial. Herein to eliminate the research gap, 22 noble-metal-free TMOs (e.g., Co3O4, MnO, and Fe2O3) were benchmarked for ORR catalysis, with Pt/C and RuO2 as comparisons. Nb2O5 demonstrated the greatest potential as an ORR electrocatalyst among all of the studied TMOs, with higher specific activity surpassing that of Pt/C. In addition, it could achieve a larger peak power density than Pt/C in a more practical Zn–air battery setup, showing promise for applications. Regarding stability, most of the studied TMOs exhibited larger losses in limiting current densities than the degradation of half-wave potentials (from 0.65% to 7.54) after the 10,000 cycle accelerated degradation tests, pointing out the direction to improve their ORR stabilities.

BACKGROUND Encapsulation of enzymes in biomimetic silica seems to be a promising immobilization method due to mild processing conditions and short preparation time. However, biomimetic silica particles may be considered too small for industrial applications because they result in difficult recovery. Furthermore, the use of R5 peptide or polymers as catalyst usually causes protein denaturation. To overcome these drawbacks, a new stable and recyclable biocatalyst based on co-encapsulation of magnetic nanoparticles and phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) in biomimetic silica has been prepared using enzyme-assisted direct condensation reactions of silicon oxide with tetramethoxysilane (TMOS). RESULTS Under optimal conditions (10 mg mL −1 nanoparticles, 4.5 U mL −1 PAL, 0.8 mol L −1 TMOS), the highest activity recovery (52%) of encapsulated PAL was obtained. Compared with conventional PAL encapsulated in biomimetic silica (28%), the activity recovery was increased 1.86-fold. TEM, CLSM, magnetisation measurements, and FTIR confirmed that the magnetic nanopaticles and PAL had been co-encapsulated into the biomimetic silica. The resulting immobilized PAL exhibited higher activity and stability than native PAL, and the immobilized PAL can be easily separated by applying a magnetic field. CONCLUSIONS This work provides a convenient strategy to prepare stable and easy recycled biocatalyst with excellent catalytic performance. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry
