ZIF-8/TOCNF carrier coated with pectin “gatekeeper” for pH/enzyme dual-responsive releasing of carvacrol and its preservation effect on fruits

Tiantian Min,Jin Yue,Chuanxiang Cheng,Xiaoyun Ma,Shihan Weng,Yuwan Luo,Yujie Lei,Yangyang Long

Developing stimuli-responsive on-demand release systems is very important to effectively suppress microbial infections and excessive food decomposition. However, the commonly designed controlled release systems with a single responsiveness cannot accurately response to environmental changes in food packaging scenarios. Herein, a pH/enzyme dual-responsive active packaging was fabricated based on in situ growth of ZIF-8 nanoparticles (ZIF-8 NPs) on TEMPO-oxidized cellulose (TOCNF) film and loading with carvacrol (CAR), after that electrostatic adsorbing pectin as “gatekeeper” for fruit preservation. The developed CAR@ZIF-8/TOCNF/Pec film was able to respond to acidic condition and pectinase produced by microorganisms in the case of fungal infections during food storage, thus possessing a dual-responsive controlled-release function. The release rate of CAR reached approximately 86.83 ± 1.82 % at pH = 5.0 and reached 88.65 ± 1.86 % in the presence of pectinase (1.0 mg/mL) after 168 h. In addition, the CAR@ZIF-8/TOCNF/Pec film performed superior inhibition efficacy against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus , and Aspergillus niger . The CAR@ZIF-8/TOCNF/Pec film were highly effective in preserving the freshness of fungus-inoculated raspberries and mangoes, and inhibited the spread of fungal spores during storage for 5 and 7 days, respectively. Therefore, this work provided a promising, smart and eco-friendly strategy for on-demand and precise release of bioactive ingredients during food storage and preservation.

Calendering-mediated TOCNF molecular slippage and h-BN aggregation on compactness and thermal conductivity of h-BN/TOCNF composites

Xian Wu,Xiu Wang,Yiwen Chen,Yifei Qu,Hao Zhang,Tingting Xu,Huiyang Bian,Guigan Fang,Hongqi Dai,Chen Su

Pore structures and interface issues have long impeded significant improvements in the thermal conductivity of biphasic composites. This work introduced a calendering technique, adapted from the traditional papermaking industry, to address these challenges in hexagonal boron nitride/tempo-oxidized cellulose nano-fiber (h-BN/TOCNF) composites. Calendering effectively reduced porosity, enhanced compactness, and improved the interface between the two phases. The results indicated that without calendering, the thermal conductivity of the composites increased with higher h-BN loading. At 50 wt% h-BN content, the through-plane thermal conductivity reached 0.82 W/m·K, which was 116% higher than that of a pure TOCNF film (0.38 W/mK). Contrary to expectations, higher calendering pressure did not yield better performance. The optimal balance was achieved with the composites containing 30 wt% h-BN processed at 2 MPa (h-BN30/TOCNF-2 composites), achieving a high thermal conductivity of 0.71 W/m·K coupled with the highest mechanical strength (40.21 MPa). This synergistic enhancement was attributed to the molecular slippage of TOCNF and preferential orientation of h-BN induced by appropriate calendering pressure, leading to tighter bonding and the formation of a “brick-mortar-brick” structure conductive to phonon transfer and mechanical reinforcement. This work demonstrates that calendering, a simple and scalable post-processing technique, can effectively engineer the microstructure of biphasic composites, leading to simultaneous enhancement in thermal and mechanical properties.

Lithium-functionalized TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber as a novel binder and its impact on the ionic conductivity performance of lithium-ion batteries

Ma Jianzhe,Nan Hui,Yang Guijun,Li Zhike,Wang Jianhao,Zhou Jingyuan,Xue Caihong,Wang Xianlan,Xu Shiai

Flexible lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are receiving widespread attention, and how to obtain the high flexibility, safety, and energy density of LIBs at the same time are one of the main challenges in the field of flexible electronics. The multi-network structure formed by cellulose nanofiber (TOCNF) not only provided sufficient mechanical support and excellent flexibility for the electrode but also promoted uniform distribution of conductive agents and active materials. In this work, we prepared an eco-friendly TOCNF binder from wheat straw, using a method involving 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxyl oxidation and high-intensity ultrasonic treatment. Additionally, we enhanced the performance of TOCNF by introducing Li + through ion exchange, resulting in lithium-functionalized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF-Li), which were employed as a novel binder for LiFePO 4 cathodes. The findings show that, when employing TOCNF-Li binder, batteries were able to obtain an initial discharge capacity of 163 mAh g –1 at 0.1 C rate and maintained 93.2% of the initial reversible capacity after 400 cycles at 2 C rate. Notably, at 5 C rate, the discharge capacity reached 133.7 mAh g −1 , with a capacity decay of only 16.1%. TOCNF-Li played a role in increasing Li + content, opening a new pathway for Li + transport, consequently enhancing Li + diffusion efficiency and charge–discharge performance. Overall, TOCNF-Li serves as a novel, environmentally friendly, and efficient binder for flexible LIBs.

Fiber-optic VOCs sensor utilizing a tunable nanostructured PVA/TOCNF composite aerogel coating

Chaoyan Wen,Yingxuan Liu,Shuyu Li,Lin Teng,Maoqing Chen,Xiaoming Chen,Yong Zhao

This study reports a high-performance fiber-optic volatile organic compound sensor based on a tunable nanostructured polyvinyl alcohol/TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (PVA/TOCNF) composite aerogel coating, where TEMPO denotes 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl. By precisely modulating the mass ratio of PVA to TOCNF, the influence mechanism of the nanoskeleton's morphological evolution on the gas-sensing performance was elucidated. A three-dimensional porous sensitive film with a high specific surface area and abundant functional groups was constructed in situ on the interference region of an SMF-MMF-SMF structure using dip-coating combined with freeze-drying technology. The results demonstrate that the sensor achieves optimal performance at a PVA/TOCNF mass ratio of 3:1, with an acetone sensitivity as high as 4.74 pm/ppm, a 22.15-fold increase compared to the pure PVA-coated sensor, alongside significantly enhanced selectivity and response speed. Furthermore, the sensor exhibits excellent repeatability and long-term stability. This work validates, for the first time, the feasibility of PVA/TOCNF composite aerogels in the field of optical gas sensing, providing a novel strategy for the development of eco-friendly, high-performance, and cost-effective fiber-optic VOC sensors.

Thermal conversion enhancement of reconstituted tobacco via graphene-TOCNF coated thermally conductive fibrous substrate

Yuhan Li,Chunping Wang,Qi Zhang,Le Wang,Siyu Zhao,Chong Luo,Runan Wang,Bin Li,Lili Fu,Yangbing Wen

The thermal conversion characteristics of reconstituted tobacco (RT) are critically linked to the aerosol release in heated tobacco products (HTPs). The low thermal conversion efficiency and undesirable pyrolysis constituents of RT hinder its value in advanced applications. To address this, we developed a multi-coating strategy that introduces an efficient thermal conduction pathway into the RT system. Graphene was homogeneously encapsulated within a 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCNF) to form a G/TOCNF composite, which was then coated onto a fibrous substrate (FS) to fabricate a thermally conductive layer. This functional fibrous material served as a substrate for an aerosol-generating matrix to form the final RT. With a graphene loading of 0.8 wt%, the thermal conductivity of the coated substrate increased by 0.14 W/(m·K). More importantly, this enhanced thermal management significantly accelerated the pyrolysis kinetics of RT. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed a 19.62% increase in total mass loss and a higher peak mass loss rate for the G/TOCNF-0.8 sample compared to the control. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) analysis demonstrated a significant reduction in harmful heterocyclic substances, thereby establishing a predictive framework to evaluate the impact of the modified hydrogel on pyrolytic products. Consequently, the total thermal conversion rate of the G/TOCNF-0.8 RT increased by 11.81% at 260 °C. This study confirms that the G/TOCNF coating not only improves filler dispersion and heat transfer but also effectively enhances the thermal conversion efficiency of aerosol, offering a promising strategy for developing heat-responsive controlled-release systems based on engineered fibrous carriers.

A robust, eco-friendly, and biodegradable cellulose nanofiber composite film for highly effective formaldehyde removal at room temperature

Yingchun Sun,Ru Liu,Yuhui Sun,Ling Long

Formaldehyde (HCHO) poses a significant threat as a common indoor air pollutant, leading to various health issues. However, effectively addressing HCHO removal at room temperature remains a considerable challenge. This paper presents the preparation of a robust, eco-friendly, and biodegradable composite cellulose nanofiber film, incorporating CeO 2 -Ag@MnO 2 catalysts and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCNF), for high-efficiency HCHO removal at room temperature. A CeO 2 -Ag@MnO 2 ternary catalyst with a core–shell structure was constructed to enhance the catalytic oxidation activity and stability. This structure increased the number of active sites on the catalyst surface and enhanced the interfacial synergistic effect of Ce-Ag-Mn. The TOCNF physically adsorbed HCHO in the composite film , while the catalyst oxidized it to CO 2 and water. The composite films, particularly those with 20 wt% CeO 2 -Ag@MnO 2 catalyst, exhibited high HCHO removal rates of 91.2 % at 20 °C and 99.6 % at 60 °C. Furthermore, the TOCNF/20 CAM composite films demonstrated excellent mechanical properties and degradability. This composite film offers an efficient and eco-friendly solution for the catalytic oxidation of HCHO at room temperature.

Enhanced thermal response and regulated release behavior of reconstituted tobacco via a graphene/TOCNF thermally conductive network

Yuhan Li,Donglai Zhu,Chunping Wang,Ze Liu,Qi Zhang,Heng Wu,Le Wang,Xia Zhang,Yue Zhang,Yangbing Wen,Siyu Zhao,Shanzhai Shang,Bin Li,Lili Fu

Graphene thermal network in G/TOCNF-CGG substrate for reconstituted tobacco (RT) via wet pulping. • RT-5 sample (5.03 wt% graphene) achieved 8.15% higher glycerol and 7.04% higher nicotine release. • Graphene incorporation increased mean activation energy of RT from 199 to 377 kJ/mol (FWO). • G/TOCNF-CGG strategy enables scalable fabrication of thermally controlled release materials. The thermophysical properties and pyrolysis behavior of reconstituted tobacco (RT) are closely associated with aerosol release in heated tobacco products (HTPs). However, the inherently low thermal conductivity of RT restricts heat transfer and temperature uniformity, thereby limiting the efficient release of key aerosol constituents (KACs). Herein, continuous heat-transfer networks were built into the cellulose fiber matrix via graphene-derived thermal pathways. TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNF), rich in carboxylate groups, were used to stabilize graphene and suppress nanosheet restacking, forming a homogeneous G/TOCNF gel. During wet pulping, cationic guar gum (CGG) served as a positively charged bridge to mediate electrostatic adsorption between the negatively charged G/TOCNF complex and cellulose fibers, enabling uniform graphene retention and stable immobilization. This interfacial regulation produced a thermally conductive substrate (TCS) with a continuous three-dimensional graphene thermal pathway. RT-5 with 5.03 wt% graphene achieved a thermal conductivity of 0.3168 W/m·K, a 52% increase over RT-0. Owing to enhanced thermal transport, the KACs release rate increased from 57.52% to 63.13%. TG/DTG analysis revealed graphene-mediated thermal regulation and composition-dependent mass-loss redistribution, reflected by shifted decomposition peaks and a reduced high-temperature mass-loss rate from −0.426% to −0.342%/℃. Kinetic analysis showed that the mean activation energy increased from 199.44 to 376.54 kJ/mol and from 203.38 to 388.92 kJ/mol by the FWO and KAS methods, respectively, indicating elevated pyrolysis barriers and regulated decomposition kinetics. Overall, the G/TOCNF-CGG system improves thermal management, KAC release, and pyrolysis regulation for next-generation HTP functional base materials.

Ambient-pressure-dried TOCNF/rGO/BaFe12O19 composite aerogels with broadband microwave absorption in X- and Ku-band

Zhen He,Yu Hu,Miao Li,Xiaohu Ren,Yun Tang,Hongfeng Yin,Hudie Yuan,Yuchi Liu

Anisotropic TOCNF/rGO/BaFe 12 O 19 aerogels were fabricated via a simple FESTA strategy. • The anisotropic porous architecture promotes multiple reflection and scattering of EMWs. • BaFe 12 O 19 introduction enables synergistic dielectric-magnetic loss mechanisms. • A minimum reflection loss of −62.19 dB and a bandwidth of 8.91 GHz were achieved. • CST simulations confirm the excellent EMW attenuation capability. Leveraging its ultralight weight and well-developed porous structure, three-dimensional graphene aerogel demonstrates exceptional application value in electromagnetic wave absorption. Nevertheless, achieving synergistically enhanced absorption performance through simultaneous structural engineering and multi-loss mechanism integration remains a formidable challenge for lightweight graphene-based aerogels. In this work, anisotropic TOCNF/rGO/BaFe 12 O 19 aerogels were fabricated via a freezing-ethanol solvent exchange thawing and ambient drying (FESTA) strategy. By incorporating BaFe 12 O 19 , the cooperative enhancement of dielectric and magnetic losses was achieved, while the unique porous architecture promoted successive reflections and scattering of incident electromagnetic waves (EMWs) within the aerogel, thereby facilitating electromagnetic energy dissipation. With the rGO/BaFe 12 O 19 mass ratio adjusted to 1:1, the resulting aerogel achieved an RL min of −62.19 dB and an EAB of 8.91 GHz. The superior EMW absorption performance stems from the enhanced polarization and magnetic losses. Radar cross-section (RCS) analyses moreover reveal that the aerogel possesses favorable electromagnetic wave scattering suppression performance under realistic conditions. Therefore, this study offers a viable approach for realizing electromagnetic absorbing materials integrating light weight, broad bandwidth, and excellent performance. Engineered ambient-pressure-dried TOCNF/CGG aerogel with dual crosslinking strategy and its performance in electromagnetic interference shielding

Jiasheng Wei,Di Li,Qing Luo,Peiyu Zhao,Ping He,Shufan Wang,Yu Meng,Shuangquan Yao,Hao Jia,Lei Dai

Amid the global drive towards green development, biomass aerogels have garnered significant attention in the domain of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials due to their abundant sources, high porosity, and large specific surface area. Nevertheless, the development of an easy-to-operate and eco-friendly method for large-scale production of biomass aerogels remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a dual crosslinking system assisted ambient pressure drying strategy is proposed to fabricate biomass EMI shielding aerogels without specialized conditions and equipment. Specifically, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCNF) combines with cationic guar gum (CGG) and Fe 3+ to form a double crosslinked network through the electrostatic interaction and ionic bonding, yielding hydrogels that encapsulate carbon nanotube (CNT). The resulting hydrogels were sequentially subjected to freeze-thaw cycles, solvent replacement and ambient pressure drying to obtain TOCNF/CGG/Fe 3+ /CNT (TCFC) aerogel. The TCFC aerogel delivered good EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 62.65 dB at a density of 0.1071 g cm −3 with the SSE (SE/density) of 584.98 dB cm 3 g −1 . Moreover, the incorporation of polydimethylsiloxane further protects the aerogels in complex environments to maintain their EMI shielding performance. This work provides a novel strategy for the construction of ambient-pressure-dried biomass aerogels, potentially inspiring new directions in the development of EMI shielding aerogels.

Janus-structured nanocomposite films constructed with Ca2+ bridging TOCNF/CNTs networks for enhancing electromagnetic shielding and mechanical properties

Xinxin Cai,Jiayi Li,Xinqi Wang,Ruixiang Zhou,Bin Wang,Shudong Lin

With the advancement of 5G communications, the Internet of Things (IoT), and wearable electronics, there has been an increasing demand for lightweight, flexible, and high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. In this study, AgNWs/TOCNF/CNTs* nanocomposite films with Janus structure were successfully prepared by vacuum-assisted filtration followed by hot pressing. The film consisted of a conductive silver nanowire (AgNWs) layer and a supporting TOCNF/CNTs* layer. Specifically, the electromagnetic shielding and mechanical properties were effectively enhanced by constructing a three-dimensional (3D) network within the TOCNF/CNTs* layer through ionic crosslinking between Ca 2+ ions and carboxylate anions (−COO − ). Comprehensive characterization demonstrated that the film possessed excellent mechanical strength (tensile strength of 93.92 ± 3.20 MPa), superior electrical conductivity (67,114 S/m), outstanding EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SET of 63.70 dB, EMI SEE/t exceeding 10,284 dB·cm 2 /g, and a shielding efficiency of 99.999957 %), as well as rapid Joule heating response under low voltage (2.0 V, reaching 115.60°C within less than 6s). These properties underscore the film’s strong potential for applications in portable electronics, aerospace, and military technologies.

Spider web-inspired multifunctional aerogel sensor: MWCNT/MXene/TOCNF synergize to achieve high-sensitivity multiple detection of humidity, pressure, and photothermal stimuli

Yaoyao Ye,Xin Tong,Jiyang Zhou,Yan Zhang,Lizheng Sha,Tianzhong Yuan,Daliang Guo,Jing Li,Yonghao Ni

In recent years, multifunctional sensors have garnered significant attention for various applications, including wearable devices and electronic skins. However, achieving high-precision measurements of multiple stimuli within a single device remains a challenge. Inspired by the functional hierarchy of spider webs, which feature radial and spiral networks, as well as a glycoprotein coating, we developed a multifunctional aerogel sensor based on a biomimetic design. The aerogel skeleton was fabricated by directional freeze-drying of TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) and MXene composites, yielding axially aligned pores that mimic the effective transport pathways of radial and spiral networks. Furthermore, a hydrophilic layer of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT-COOH) was subsequently spray-coated on to the surface, forming a glycoprotein coating-like interface. The multifunctional MWCNT/MXene/TOCNF aerogel (MMTA) sensor demonstrates ultrasensitive detection capabilities for humidity, pressure, and photothermal stimuli, showing outstanding sensitivity values (14.35 %RH −1 , −10.51 kPa −1 , −10.53 °C −1 ) over wide detection ranges (11–97 %RH, 0.5–100 kPa, 24 °C–40 °C). This biomimetic approach of translating key structural and functional elements of spider webs into advanced sensor performance demonstrates the effectiveness of nature-inspired design for multifunctional sensing platforms.
