Abstract Two diglycolamide homologs, N,N,N′,N′ -tetraoctyl-3,6-dioxaoctane diamide (DOODA) and N,N,N′,N′ -tetraoctyl-3,6,9-trioxaundecane diamide (TOUDA), were synthesized. Their extraction behaviors of Am 3+ and Eu 3+ were investigated and compared with those of N,N,N′,N′ -tetraoctyl-3-oxapentane diamide (TODGA). The extraction ability toward Am 3+ and Eu 3+ decreased with increasing etheric oxygen number in the extractant structure. In contrast to TODGA, an very interesting inversion on the selectivity occurred for DOODA and TOUDA, which were more favor of extracting Am 3+ than Eu 3+ . The maximum SF
Am/Eu of 3.5 for DOODA can be achieved at 3.0 mol/L HNO 3 . The stoichiometries of extracted species and extraction thermodynamic parameters were also presented. Graphical Abstract

The determination of trace rare-earth elements (REEs) can be used for the assessment of environmental pollution, and is of great significance to the study of toxicity and toxicology in animals and plants. N, N, N′, N′-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA) is an environmental friendly extractant that is highly selective to REEs. In this study, an analytical method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 16 trace REEs in simulated water samples by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). With this method, TODGA was used as the extractant to perform the liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) sample pretreatment procedure. All 16 REEs were extracted from a 3 M nitric acid medium into an organic phase by a 0.025 M TODGA petroleum ether solution. A 0.03 M ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA) solution was used for back-extraction to strip the REEs from the organic phase into the aqueous phase. The aqueous phase was concentrated using a vacuum rotary evaporator and the concentration of the 16 REEs was detected by ICP-OES. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the limits of detection (3σ, n = 7) for the REEs ranged from 0.0405 ng mL -1 (Nd) to 0.5038 ng mL -1 (Ho). The relative standard deviations (c = 100 ng mL -1 , n = 7) were from 0.5% (Eu) to 4.0% (Tm) with a linear range of 4–1000 ng mL -1 (R 2 > 0.999). The recoveries of 16 REEs ranged from 95% to 106%. The LLE-ICP-OES method established in this study has the advantages of simple operation, low detection limits, fast analysis speed and the ability to simultaneously determine 16 REEs, thereby acting as a viable alternative for the simultaneous detection of trace amounts of REEs in water samples.

Responding to the need for radioactive waste disposal, the static and dynamic adsorption of Eu 3+ on TODGA-C resin in HNO 3 was investigated. The findings indicated that the adsorption of Eu 3+ on TODGA-C adheres to the quasi-second-order kinetic model. Additionally, the distribution coefficient for Eu 3+ adsorption on TODGA-C reaches 10 5 mL/g in 4 mol/L HNO 3 . Under the conditions of 3.5 mol/L HNO 3 , a flow rate of 3.6 mL/min, and an initial Eu 3+ concentration of 10 mg/L, the Thomas rate constant was found to be 1.2 mL/(mg·min), with a dynamic saturation capacity of 15 mg/mL.

Tri- n -butyl phosphate (TBP), n -octanol and N,N -dihexyloctanamide (DHOA) are often used as phase modifiers to prevent the formation of the third phase during the extraction of trivalent lanthanides and actinides by N,N,N′,N′ -tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA) in spent fuel reprocessing process. In this context, the effects of these three modifiers on the thermodynamic and kinetic behaviors of 0.20 mol·L −1 TODGA in n -dodecane toward Nd 3+ in nitric acid solution were studied and compared together for the first time. A systematic comparison of the effects of the three modifiers on the extraction distribution ratio, stripping percentage, loading capacity, aggregation and extraction kinetics was carried out with the aim of selecting a phase modifier for the TODGA-based process that would work optimally and to elucidate the impact of the modifiers in the TODGA extraction system. It is found that modifier reduces the capacity of TODGA to extract Nd 3+ in the order of DHOA > TBP > n -octanol, slightly hinders the stripping of Nd 3+ , while significantly enhancing the loading capacity of TODGA. With increasing the modifier concentration, the limiting organic phase concentration (LOC) for Nd 3+ increases. At the modifier concentration below 0.30 mol·L −1 , n -octanol has the greatest promotion effect on the LOC value, while at that above 0.50 mol·L −1 , TBP has the best effect. Meanwhile, through the dynamic light scattering analysis for the loaded organic phase, it is also found that the particle size of the aggregates in organic phase decreases significantly upon the addition of modifier. Furthermore, the extraction kinetics studies in a Lewis cell indicate that the addition of modifier can prolong the time to reach extraction equilibrium, and decrease the extraction rate. Although the modifier also exerts some influence on the reaction order and extraction rate constant to some extent, it does not alter the underlying regime of the extraction reaction.

Determining rare earth elements (REEs) and Sr-Nd isotope ratios at low abundance levels in ultramafic rocks remains a significant challenge. This study presents a simplified method for the separation of trace multi-elements using a tandem column of SR-TODGA resin combination, and thereby the elements at very low levels, and 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd ratios in ultramafic rocks were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS). The samples were digested using HF-HNO3, and prepared to HNO3-H3BO3 solutions. After loading the sample solutions onto the tandem column, Sr was eluted from the SR resin column using 10 mL of 0.045 M HNO3. The TODGA column was eluted sequentially with 10 mL of 0.45 M HNO3 and 1.4 M HF for Zr, Hf, Th and U, 7 mL of 2.1 M HCl for La, Ce and Pr, 5 mL of 1.5 M HCl for Nd, and 10 mL of 0.06 M H2SO4 for other REEs (Sm-Lu and Y). The procedural recovery yields were evaluated by adding standards, and they ranged from 97.3% for La to 103.9% for Th. The blank ranges from 0.01 ng (Ho, Tm and Lu) to 24.4 ng (Sr). Eight ultramafic reference materials, JP-1, DTS-2b, UB-N, MUH-1, SARM-6, Harz01, DZΣ-1 and DZΣ-2, were analyzed, and the analytical results exhibit good agreement with certified and literature values. Therefore, the proposed method can be applied to accurately analyze both the contents of multi-elements at very low levels and Sr-Nd isotopic ratios in ultramafic rocks.
