Bathocuproine, an Old Dog New Tricks for Boosting the Performance of Perovskite Solar Cells

Yaqi Hong,Song Zhang,Hu Shen,Xingyuan Tian,Bin Zhang,Xin Zhou,Rong Liu,Ying Liu,Yicong Gao,Ruirui Cao,Huilin Li,Fumin Li,Zhitao Shen,Chong Chen

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have demonstrated extensive prospects for future applications. However, defects remain as the crucial factor that impedes their further advancement in performance, and passivation of the interfaces (such as the buried and/or top interfaces) is regarded as one of the most effective approaches. Herein, we aim to address another important interface, namely, the indium tin oxide/electron transport layer (ITO/ETL) interface in n-i-p structured devices. Since electron transport layers are typically fabricated using commercial nano tin dioxide, which often display insufficient density. To combat this, we employ the most commonly used bathocuproine (BCP) material to treat the ITO/ETL interface. The incorporation of BCP diminishes the direct contact between the perovskite and ITO layers, while also passivating buried interface and adjusting the crystal orientation of perovskites. Furthermore, the substrate layer exhibits improved transparency, consequently elevating the utilization rate of light by perovskite. As a result, the BCP-based PSC exhibits an impressive efficiency greater than 22%, surpassing the control one of 19.91%, and which simultaneously demonstrates excellent stability. Notably, the optimization of this interface has universal applicability in the improvement of PSCs performance.

Dynamic processes of positive/negative immune-vascular crosstalk loop via functional MRI-guided monitor

Rong Zhang,Teng Jin,Yue Zhang,Xueqing Sui,Shiman Wu,Yue Wu,Dapeng Hao,Zhenwei Yao,Zhengze Yu,Xuejun Liu,Hua Zhang

Immunotherapy holds significant promise to completely eliminate tumor, yet lack of timely evaluation of immune responses, which challenged by inherent lagging and pseudoprogression during immunotherapy. Immune-vascular crosstalk (IVC), an enhancement ring for the mutual regulation linking tumor vascular normalization with immune remodeling forms, emerging as a systematic indicator for immunotherapy outcomes, necessitates timely, non-invasive, and early detection of its status to enhance clinical benefits. Herein, positive and negative loop models of tumor IVC were established using different degree of photothermal therapy (PTT) based on NaBiF 4 :Gd@PDA@PEG nanoprobes. Multi-functional magnetic resonance imaging, including fast spoiled gradient-recalled (FSPGR), time-resolved imaging of contrast kinetics (TRICKs) and dynamic susceptibility contrast perfusion weighted imaging (DSC-PWI), was applied to dynamically reflect normalized/ablated tumor vasculature, well-matched increased/decreased immune response corresponding to different status of IVC, confirmed by pathology results. This study proposes a novel biological method to noninvasively detect the positive/negative IVC loop, paving the visualized way for immunotherapy assessed benefits, which is expected to be extended to clinical translation.

Teaching a fluorophore new tricks: Exploiting the light-driven organic oxidase nanozyme properties of thiazolothiazole for highly sensitive biomedical detection

You Dou,Ran Yang,Yue Xiao,Jiao Wu,Lingbo Qu,Yuanqiang Sun,Zhaohui Li

The development of light-driven organic nanozymes possessing photoactivity is of great significance in biomedical research and biosensing given that they exhibit prominent absorption and fascinating photo-controllability in the visible range. However, the number and availability of such nanozymes is quite low. In this work, N-arylpyridinium thiazolothiazole (N, N′-dichlorophenzyled dipyridinium thiazolo[5,4- d ]thiazole difluoride, TTz-Cl 2+ ), which exhibits inherent light-driven oxidase-mimicking activity, was synthesized and it was found that 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) could be oxidized under visible light, and also underwent corresponding changes in color and absorption. Moreover, the enzymatic activity of TTz-Cl 2+ could be modulated precisely by switching the visible light on and off. Glutathione (GSH), an important biological antioxidation regulator, was shown to be capable of successfully impeding the catalytic functions of TTz-Cl 2+ . Thus, it proved possible to fabricate a facile photo-triggered colorimetric sensing system for detection of GSH based on the use of the TTz-Cl 2+ and TMB system. The sensor exhibited satisfactory analytical performance with a linear range of 1–17 μM and a detection limit of 0.47 μM and may be used to determine GSH in HeLa cell lysates with good selectivity and high sensitivity. This work not only extends the availability of organic nanozymes but also broadens the applications base of thiazolothiazole derivatives in biomedical analysis.

Methylene Blue-Stained Single-Stranded DNA Aptamers as a Highly Efficient Electronic Switch for Quasi-Reagentless Exosomes Detection: An Old Dog with New Tricks

Yanhong Wang,Han Jie,Huajuan Ye,Yuanyuan Zhang,Ning Li,Junyang Zhuang

Improving the convenience, sensitivity, and cost-effectiveness of electrochemical biosensors is crucial for advancing their clinical diagnostic applications. Herein, we presented an elegant approach to construct electrochemical aptasensors for tumor-derived exosome detection by harnessing the alterable interaction between methylene blue (MB) and DNA aptamer. In detail, the anti-EpCAM aptamer, named SYL3C, was found to exhibit a strong affinity toward MB due to the specific interaction between MB and unbound guanine bases. Thereby, SYL3C could be stained with MB to arouse a strong electrochemical signal on a gold electrode (AuE). Upon binding to EpCAM-positive exosomes, SYL3C underwent a conformational transformation. The resulting conformation, or exosomes-SYL3C complex, not only reduced the accumulation of MB on SYL3C by obstructing the accessibility of guanines to MB but also impeded the transfer of electrons from the bound MB to AuE, leading to a notable decrease in the electrochemical signal. Using MB-stained SYL3C as an electronic switch, an electrochemical aptasensor was readily established for the detection of EpCAM-positive exosome detection. Without the need for signal amplification strategies, expensive auxiliary reagents, and complex operation, this unique signal transduction mechanism alone could endow the aptasensor with ultrahigh sensitivity. A limit of detection (LOD) of 234 particles mL–1 was achieved, surpassing the performance of most reported methods. As a proof of concept, the aptasensor was applied to analyze clinical serum samples and effectively distinguish non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients from healthy individuals. As EpCAM exhibits broad expression in exosomes derived from different tumor sources, the developed aptasensor holds promise for diagnosing other tumor types.
