In this work, we develop a nonflammable low-concentration electrolyte (LCE) based on the Li+-solvation sheath structure. It consists of only 0.4 M LiPF6 in the mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), and 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE). Abundant incombustible TTE is used as an inert cosolvent to regulate the Li+-solvation sheath structure. With the addition of TTE, the oxidation stability of the LCE is enhanced as a result of reduced free-state solvent molecules and strengthened interactions between Li+ and EC/DMC molecules. The rate and cycling performances of Li‖LFP and Li‖NCM811 cells in 0.4 M LiPF6–EC/DMC/TTE (1 : 1 : 4, v/v/v) (0.4 M-114) are much better than in 0.4 M LiPF6–EC/DMC (1 : 1, v/v), and even better than in the conventional electrolyte (1 M LiPF6–EC/DMC (1 : 1, v/v)). The graphite‖LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) pouch cells using the 0.4 M-114 electrolyte show excellent cycling and safety performances, demonstrating the feasibility of using the nonflammable LCEs in practical applications. This work provides a nonflammable low-concentration electrolyte for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and provides a new insight into the development of electrolytes for LIBs.

The specific energy of Li metal batteries (LMBs) can be improved by using high-voltage cathode materials; however, achieving long-term stable cycling performance in the corresponding system is particularly challenging for the liquid electrolyte. Herein, a novel pseudo-oversaturated electrolyte (POSE) is prepared by introducing 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE) to adjust the coordination structure between diglyme (G2) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI). Surprisingly, although TTE shows little solubility to LiTFSI, the molar ratio between LiTFSI and G2 in the POSE can be increased to 1:1, which is much higher than that of the saturation state, 1:2.8. Simulation and experimental results prove that TTE promotes closer contact of the G2 molecular with Li + in the POSE. Moreover, it also participates in the formation of electrolyte/electrode interphases. The electrolyte shows outstanding compatibility with both the Li metal anode and typical high-voltage cathodes. Li||Li symmetric cells show a long life of more than 2000 h at 1 mA cm −2 , 1 mAh cm −2 . In the meantime, Li||LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) cell with the POSE shows a high reversible capacity of 134.8 mAh g −1 after 900 cycles at 4.5 V, 1 C rate. The concept of POSE can provide new insight into the Li + solvation structure and in the design of advanced electrolytes for LMBs.

Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based polymer electrolytes hold promise for application in solid-state lithium metal batteries. However, the high crystallinity of PEO poses a significant challenge to ion transport, particularly limiting its room-temperature performance. Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP), a semi-crystalline polymer with rigid fluorocarbon chains, can provide robust mechanical support to the electrolyte system. Herein, a quasi-solid electrolyte (QSE) was fabricated by using PEO and PVDF-HFP, in which succinonitrile (SN) was introduced as a plasticizer to enhance the electrochemical properties at room temperature. Innovatively, 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE) was employed as a shield layer to prevent direct contact between the Li anode and the prepared SN-modified PEO/PVDF-HFP-QSE, thus forming a stable anode/electrolyte interface. The obtained TTE-P 8 P 2 S(12%)-QSE exhibits high room-temperature electrochemical properties, with an ionic conductivity of 4.02 × 10 –4 S cm –1 , a lithium-ion transport number of 0.47, and a wide electrochemical window of 5.4 V vs. Li + /Li. By interfacial modification, TTE-P 8 P 2 S(12%)-QSE can enable long-term cycling of LiCoO 2 cathodes and Li anodes, with an initial discharge capacity of 126.9 mAh g –1 , and achieve an average capacity of 142.8 mAh g –1 within 100 cycles at room temperature. Characterizations reveal that the incorporation of TTE preserves the structural integrity of the lithium electrodes, promotes efficient utilization of active lithium ions, and tailors the composition and structure of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the lithium metal anode, thereby substantially enhancing interfacial stability. This work provides a feasible strategy for building high-energy-density lithium metal batteries for room-temperature applications.

Developing a long-term stable electrolyte is one of the most enormous challenges for Li–O2 batteries. Equally, the high flammability of frequently used solvents seriously weakens the electrolyte safety in Li–O2 batteries, which inevitably restricts their commercial applications. Here, a binary mixture of highly concentrated tetraglyme electrolyte (HCG4) and 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE) was used for a novel electrolyte (HCG4/TTE) in Li–O2 batteries, which exhibit good wettability, enhanced ionic conductivity, considerable nonflammability, and high electrochemical stability. Being a co-solvent, TTE can contribute to increasing ionic conductivity and to improving flame retardance of the as-prepared electrolyte. The cell with this novel electrolyte displays an enhanced cycling stability, resulting from the high electrochemical stability during cycling and the formation of electrochemically stable interfaces prevents parasitic reactions occurring on the Li anode. These results presented here demonstrate a novel electrolyte with a high electrochemical stability and considerable safety for Li–O2 batteries.

The triazole inhibitors of 2-(1-tosyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-ethanol (TTE) and 2-(1-tosyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-propan-2-ol (TTP) were synthesized via the click chemistry reaction. Self-assembling technique was used to form self-assembled membrane (SAM) of TTE and TTP on copper surface. The electrochemical measurement results indicate that the TTE and TTP film can strongly suppress copper corrosion in 3 wt.% NaCl solution and the inhibition efficiency of TTE and TTP are 89.4% and 93.1%, respectively. TTP shows better inhibition performance than TTE. Polarization curves show that TTE and TTP predominantly retard the anodic process of the corrosion reaction. The results of quantum chemical calculations and molecule dynamics (MD) simulations reveal that the formation of TTE and TTP SAM on copper surface is mainly achieved by the adsorption of triazole ring and O atoms at horizontal orientation.
