Photothermal controlled antibacterial Ta4C3Tx-AgNPs/nanocellulose bioplastic food packaging

Xiaotong Wang,Simin Xuan,Keying Ding,Peng Jin,Yonghua Zheng,Zhengguo Wu

Uncontrolled antibacterial, insufficient barrier and low strength are the bottlenecks of food packaging applications. Herein, Ta 4 C 3 T x nanosheet as a template was used to prepare Ta 4 C 3 T x immobilized silver nanoparticles (Ta 4 C 3 T x -AgNPs), which was compounded with nanocellulose to obtain high-strength and high barrier controllable bactericidal nanocellulose-based bioplastic packaging (CTa-Ag). The results indicated that due to the hydrogen bonding between nanocellulose and Ta 4 C 3 T x , the bridging effect of QCS (quaternized chitosan) and the filling of Ta 4 C 3 T x -AgNPs, the CTa-Ag had tightly stacked microstructure, which endowed them with excellent mechanical properties (4.0 GPa), ultra-low oxygen permeability (0.009 cm 3 /m 2 ·d·atm) and stable photothermal conversion efficiency. Importantly, the packaging exhibits the ability to control the release of antibacterial active ingredients. Moreover, the synergistic effects of controllable release of nano active factors, photothermal and photocatalysis in CTa-Ag gave it long-lasting antibacterial properties . This study brings new insights into the design and manufacture of multifunctional, controllable and long-lasting antibacterial bioplastic food packaging.

The utilization of solar-driven seawater evaporation technology has proven effective for seawater desalination. This study focuses on developing Ta 4 C 3 T X /melamine sponges through a straightforward dipping-drying procedure. The porous melamine sponges, loaded with Ta 4 C 3 T X MXene within their framework, display remarkable elasticity, amphiphilicity, sunlight absorption capacity, and thermal stability due to the synergistic effects of the MXene and the sponge matrix. The Ta 4 C 3 T X /melamine sponges demonstrate superior photothermal conversion performance under sunlight irradiation. Under 1 sun, the sponges recorded an evaporation rate of 1.33 kg∙m −2 h −1 and a conversion efficiency of 83.79 %. Furthermore, outdoor assessments corroborated the sponges' impressive efficacy in seawater evaporation across diverse weather conditions. Significantly, these sponges exhibited self-desalination capabilities and long-term stability throughout the seawater evaporation process. Notably, the photothermal efficiency of the sponges is enhanced in proportion to the content of Ta 4 C 3 T X . Beyond seawater evaporation, these sponges have also demonstrated their effectiveness in applications such as deicing and photothermal therapy applications. Additionally, the sponges demonstrated a capacity to absorb oils and organic solvents, with an absorption capacity ranging between 19 and 55 g∙g −1 . Given their affordability, straightforward fabrication process, sustainability, and effective photothermal performance, the Ta 4 C 3 T X /melamine sponges present new opportunities for the development of multifunctional materials aimed at desalination and pollution remediation.

Jiarong Zhang,Long Yu,Ya'nan Zhao,Tianran Zhao,Yi'na Yang,Chunna Yu,Chang Zhao,Guangjian Xing

The urgent need for multifunctional, high-performance materials is critical in addressing environmental pollution and energy shortages faced by contemporary society. This research presents innovative NH 2 -MIL-88B/Ta 4 C 3 T X /graphene aerogels that exhibit exceptional capabilities in photocatalysis and thermal energy storage utilizing solar energy. Synthesized through a combination of hydrothermal and freeze-drying methods, these aerogels feature unique structural characteristics, including a hierarchical porous structure, low density, and a large specific surface area. Furthermore, the synergistic effects of NH 2 -MIL-88B, Ta 4 C 3 T X MXene, and the aerogel matrix contribute to remarkable physicochemical properties, such as high sunlight absorptivity and an optimal optical band gap that aligns well with the solar spectrum. These attributes enable the aerogels to photodegrade various dye and antibiotic drug solutions with high concentrations. The photodegradation efficiencies achieved were 75.57 % for Congo red, 61.56 % for methylene blue, and 58.57 % for tetracycline hydrochloride. Additionally, these aerogels exhibit significant adsorption capacities for various dyes and drugs. Moreover, when the phase change material polyethylene glycol is successfully integrated into the aerogels, they exhibit excellent thermal energy storage performance with leak-proof capabilities. A high photothermal conversion efficiency of 90.15 %, a phase enthalpy of 202.13 J g −1 , and an enthalpy efficiency of 98.55 % provide evidence for this. This work provides valuable insights into the development of multifunctional aerogels aimed at addressing the challenges of wastewater treatment and energy shortages.

Multifunctional Ta4C3Tx MXene/HTPP - PBS composites with multi cross-linking systems to cope with complex nuclear environments

Xue Liu,Jianguo Deng,Fuhan Mai,Xin Li,Guohong Pu,Zhihua Deng,Lanxiang Ji,Xiaofeng Bai,Quanping Zhang,Yuanlin Zhou

The development of multifunctional radiation protection materials is crucial to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment in complex nuclear environments. Herein, a flexible radiation protection material integrating self-healing, thermal management, and behaviour response was prepared from Ta 4 C 3 T x MXene, Hydrogen-terminated phenyl polysiloxane, and Polyborosiloxane through esterification, “thiol-ene click” hydrosilylation reaction using L(+)-Cysteine as a bridge. The results showed that when Ta 4 C 3 T x MXene reached 20 wt%, the tensile strength of composite was 0.6321 MPa with the self-healing rate at 90.22 %. And the gauge factor of the material reached 25.83 at 100 % strain. This compensated for the gap between low strain and high sensitivity. Additionally, the multilayer structure of Ta 4 C 3 T x MXene and the absorption properties of Tantalum enable the material to attenuate γ-rays through absorption and scattering mechanisms. The attenuation capability of Ta 2 O 5 and Ta 4 C 3 T x MXene fillers for 59.6 KeV γ-rays was compared at the same Tantalum content. When the Tantalum content reaches 23.81 wt%, the Ta 4 C 3 T x MXene composite contains 20 wt% filler and has an attenuation coefficient of 0.757. Similarly, the Ta 2 O 5 composite contains 22.5 wt% filler and has an attenuation coefficient of 0.734. These results are significant for improving temperature and behaviour monitoring of workers in low-temperature nuclear environments.

Conductive Hydrogel with Ta4C3TX MXene to Detect Human Movement

Fan Wu,Long Yu,Liyi Zhou,Jiarong Zhang,Ya’nan Zhao,Chunna Yu,Chang Zhao,Guangjian Xing

Nanocomposite hydrogels with exceptional mechanical properties and sensing performance are ideal for flexible sensors designed to detect human movements and monitor human health. In this study, a composite hydrogel was prepared through in situ polymerization using a combination of poly(methacrylic acid-co-acrylamide) (P(MAA-co-AAM)), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS), and Ta4C3TX MXene. The resulting P(MAA-co-AAM)/PEDOT/PSS/Ta4C3TX hydrogel features a porous network structure closely cross-linked with hydrogen bonds, providing superior mechanical properties such as high elastic modulus, compressive strength, and low hysteresis ratio. The compressive strength of the hydrogel reaches 386.80 kPa, significantly surpassing that of pure P(MAA-co-AAM) hydrogels and other hydrogels. The piezoresistive sensor developed with this hydrogel demonstrates outstanding pressure sensing capabilities: a sensitivity of 0.44 kPa–1, a low detection limit of 38.63 Pa, a rapid response time of 44 ms, and a recovery time of 58 ms. Notably, the sensor can sustain over 1000 sensing cycles with remarkable stability and weather resistance. It can accurately detect human body movements, such as joint movements, and even recognize subtle facial microexpressions. Furthermore, the sensor can wirelessly monitor robotic movements through a Bluetooth system and accompanying software. This mechanically robust hydrogel holds significant promise for applications in pressure sensors, human-machine interaction, and portable wearable devices.

Long-Term Stability and Excellent Sensing Performance of Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Polyacrylamide/Ta4C3TX Hydrogel Sensors

Tianran Zhao,Fan Wu,Yi’na Yang,Liyang Zhao,Long Yu,Jiarong Zhang,Ya’nan Zhao,Chunna Yu,Chang Zhao,Guangjian Xing

The subpar mechanical and electrical properties of traditional conductive hydrogels limit their applicability in flexible pressure sensors for the stable and real-time monitoring of human activities. In this study, we synthesized a double-network poly(vinyl alcohol)/polyacrylamide/Ta4C3TX hydrogel using a one-pot polymerization method in the presence of CaCl2. This hydrogel benefits from the coexistence of metal coordination bonds, hydrogen bonds, and ionic interactions, contributing to its desirable mechanical properties and good compressibility. Furthermore, the incorporation of Ta4C3TX MXene significantly enhances the conductivity of the hydrogel compared to the pristine poly(vinyl alcohol)/polyacrylamide variant. The piezoresistive sensors constructed from this hydrogel demonstrate a high sensitivity of 2.67 kPa–1, a low detection limit of 38 Pa, a rapid response time of 69.1 ms, and a short-term recovery time of 39.75 ms, all while maintaining good stability. Notably, the sensors retain excellent sensing performance even after 90 days. Given these outstanding characteristics, the sensors hold promise for monitoring physiological signals, such as those from human limbs and speech, and can be utilized in the fields of detecting robotic movement and wireless wearable sensing. Additionally, the hydrogel demonstrates exceptional thermal shielding properties. This high-performance hydrogel developed in this study paves the way for advanced flexible wearable electronic devices.

Deyu Kong,Peng Huang,Fangrong Qin,Jun Liu,Jiayi Lin,Yubin Lin,Haiming Huang,Weiliang Wang,Chuang Han,Shaolin Zhang

Two-dimensional (2D) MXenes have emerged as promising gas sensor materials due to their abundant surface functional groups, excellent conductivity, and large surface area. In this work, we synthesized 2D Ta 4 C 3 T x nanosheets via hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching followed by a tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAOH) intercalation treatment. Systematical characterization reveals the as-prepared 2D Ta 4 C 3 T x exhibits promising monolayer morphology with abundant oxygen containing functional groups. The sensor device based on monolayer Ta 4 C 3 T x presents a brilliant response to ammonia gas at room temperature, well surpassing those based on other previously reported MXenes. The high selectivity of Ta 4 C 3 T x for ammonia gas was explored through first-principle calculations. This study highlights the significant potential of monolayer Ta 4 C 3 T x for developing high-performance room-temperature ammonia gas sensors.

Terahertz nondestructive evaluation of Ta4C3TX/polyacrylamide hydrogels: Microstructure characterization and structure-property correlations

Tiantian Lv,Wei He,Fan Wu,Yixu Wang,Siqi Ma,Chao Wang

This study successfully synthesized MXene/polyacrylamide (Ta 4 C 3 T X /PAM) composite hydrogels via in situ polymerization and systematically investigated their terahertz response and electrical properties. Reflective terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) was employed to characterize the composite microstructure, with a focus on evaluating MXene nanosheet dispersion and mapping the surface morphology. This approach enabled the clear visualization of both internal conductive networks and surface structural features, providing critical insights into conductive network formation and surface uniformity. A Kramers–Kronig-based phase correction method was implemented to accurately extract optical constants, while a novel compressed-sensing algorithm significantly enhanced the reconstruction quality of terahertz images. The key findings demonstrate that MXene incorporation enhances terahertz reflectivity, absorption, and electrical conductivity, with distinct resonance peaks observed across the terahertz band. Spatial analysis of terahertz parameters further enabled mapping of MXene distribution and assessment of network connectivity. In particular, directional statistical analysis of the reconstructed images was performed to derive alternating-current (AC) conductivity along different orientations, revealing significant anisotropic charge transport behavior in the composite. This work establishes terahertz waves as an effective tool for analyzing internal conductive networks and surface morphology in composite hydrogels, correlating microstructural features—such as filler dispersion, network connectivity, and surface topography—with macroscopic functional properties. A proposed multilevel interaction mechanism elucidates the synergistic roles of impedance matching, scattering, and energy dissipation in the enhanced terahertz response. These findings underscore the strong potential of terahertz technology as an advanced non‑destructive testing method for the structural and functional evaluation of functional composite materials.
