Halogenated methane serves as a universal platform molecule for building high-value chemicals. Utilizing sodium chloride solution for photocatalytic methane chlorination presents an environmentally friendly method for methane conversion. However, competing reactions in gas-solid-liquid systems leads to low efficiency and selectivity in photocatalytic methane chlorination. Here, an in situ method is employed to fabricate a hydrophobic layer of TaO x species on the surface of NaTaO 3 . Through in-situ XPS and XANES spectra analysis, it is determined that TaO x is a coordination unsaturated species. The TaO x species transforms the surface properties from the inherent hydrophilicity of NaTaO 3 to the hydrophobicity of TaO x /NaTaO 3 , which enhances the accessibility of CH 4 for adsorption and activation, and thus promotes the methane chlorination reaction within the gas-liquid-solid three-phase system. The optimized TaO x /NaTaO 3 photocatalyst has a good durability for multiple cycles of methane chlorination reactions, yielding CH 3 Cl at a rate of 233 µmol g −1 h −1 with a selectivity of 83%. In contrast, pure NaTaO 3 exhibits almost no activity toward CH 3 Cl formation, instead catalyzing the over-oxidation of CH 4 into CO 2 . Notably, the activity of the optimized TaO x /NaTaO 3 photocatalyst surpasses that of reported noble metal photocatalysts. This research offers an effective strategy for enhancing the selectivity of photocatalytic methane chlorination using inorganic chlorine ions.

Early identification and treatment of breast cancer is very important for breast conserving therapy and to improve the prognosis and survival rates of patients. Multifunctional nanotheranostic agents are of particular importance in the field of precise nanomedicine, since they can augment the visualization and treatment of cancer. We developed a novel Bi2S3 nanoparticle coated with a hyaluronic acid (HA)-modified tantalum oxide (TaOx) nanoshell (Bi2S3@TaOx-HA). The as-prepared core/shell nanoparticles exhibited a high Bi2S3 nanoparticle loading efficiency of (67 wt %). The TaOx nanoshell exhibited excellent biocompatibility and computed tomography imaging capacity, and the Bi2S3 nanoparticles exhibited an excellent photothermal transducing performance and computed tomography (CT) and photoacoustic imaging capacity. As a result of these merits, the Bi2S3@TaOx core–shell nanoparticles can act as a theranostic agent for CT/photoacoustically monitored enhanced photothermal therapy. These findings will evoke new interest in future cancer therapeutic strategies based on biocompatible functional nanomaterials.

Cancer radiotherapy (RT) is a clinically used tumor treatment strategy applicable for a wide range of solid tumors. However, during RT treatment of tumors, only a small portion of applied ionizing irradiation energy is absorbed by the tumor, in which the largely hypoxic microenvironment also limits the anti-tumor efficacy of RT. In this work, we rationally fabricate polyethylene glycol (PEG) stabilized perfluorocarbon (PFC) nano-droplets decorated with TaOx nanoparticles (TaOx@PFC-PEG) as a multifunctional RT sensitizer. The obtained TaOx@PFC-PEG nanoparticles on one hand can absorb X-ray by TaOx to concentrate radiation energy within tumor cells, on the other hand after saturating PFC with oxygen will act as an oxygen reservoir to gradually release oxygen and improve tumor oxygenation . As the result, remarkably enhanced in vivo RT treatment is achieved with TaOx@PFC-PEG nanoparticles in our mouse tumor model experiments. Our work thus presents a new nanotechnology strategy to enhance RT-induced tumor treatment by simultaneously concentrating radiation energy within tumors and improving tumor oxygenation, using one multifunctional agent.

Despite extensive use of radiotherapy in cancer treatment, there has been huge demand to improve its efficacy and accuracy in tumor destruction. To this end, nanoparticle-based radiosensitizers, particularly those with high-Z elements, have been explored to enhance radiotherapy. Meanwhile, imaging is an essential tool prior to the individual planning of precise radiotherapy. Here, hollow tantalum oxide (H-TaOx) nanoshells are prepared using a one-pot template-free method and then modified with polyethylene glycol (PEG), yielding H-TaOx-PEG nanoshells for imaging-guided synergistically enhanced radiotherapy. H-TaOx-PEG nanoshells show strong intrinsic binding with metal ions such as Fe 3+ and 99m Tc 4+ upon simple mixing, enabling magnetic resonance imaging and single photon emission computed tomography imaging, respectively, which are able to track in vivo distribution of those nanoshells and locate the tumor. With mesoporous shells and large cavities, those H-TaOx-PEG nanoshells show efficient loading of 7-ethyl-10-hydroxycamptothecin (SN-38), a hydrophobic chemotherapeutic drug. By means of the radiosensitization effect of Ta to deposit X-ray energy inside tumors, as well as SN-38-induced cell cycle arrest into radiation-sensitive phases, H-TaOx-PEG@SN-38 can offer remarkable synergistic therapeutic outcome in the combined chemoradiotherapy. Without appreciable systemic toxicity, such hollow-TaOx nanostructure may therefore find promising applications in multimodal imaging and enhanced cancer radiotherapy.
