To avoid the critical problems of effective drugs not being carried to their targeted cancers and their quantity and location not being sensed in situ, this work presents a completely new innovative strategy to achieve both smart cancer targeting (SCT) and super-sensitive sensing (SSS), where one drug carrier works for effective drug loading and release. Herein, malignant melanoma treatment is used as an example of reliable detection and effective therapy. We report two characteristic dumbbell-like nano-micelles and spherical-like nano-micelles of hyaluronan induced by the Eu3+/Tb3+complexes for effective drug loading and release, respectively. These special Eu3+/Tb3+-loaded nano-micelles (marked as ENM and TNM) have strong and sharp red/green luminescence that can sensitively detect the malignant melanoma drug dacarbazine through changes in fluorescence intensity. Cytotoxicity experiments confirmed that both ENM and TNM are not toxic to normal cells at very high concentrations of 4 mM. However, when loaded with cancer drugs (D-ENM and D-ENM), they both killed cancer cells with more than 40% efficacy at this concentration. The in vivo experiments confirmed that D-ENM and D-TNM can effectively target cancer cells in tissue and effectively impede cancer growth. The detection limits of ENM and TNM in sensing cancer drugs can reach 0.456 μg/mL and 0.139 μg/mL, respectively. Therefore, the reported Eu3+/Tb3+-induced hyaluronan nano-micelles (ENM and TNM) are distinguished carriers of this cancer drug and excellent in situ sensors, and they have highly therapeutic effects with extremely low toxicity to normal cells.
UV protection of polymer solar cells is significant to extend the duration of life and to improve their efficiency. Diatom shells doped with Eu3+/Tb3+ complexes (ETDSs) can be used as an efficient absorber and down-conversion agent for these purposes. In this work, the goal is effective UV protection and photovoltaic efficiency enhancement of polymer solar cells using DSs doped with Eu3+/Tb3+ complexes. These Eu3+/Tb3+ complexes in DSs are anchored at porous walls through a grafted coupling agent. As a strong UV absorber and efficiency enhancer, ETDSs were compounded into the cellulose acetate (CA) matrix to get an ETDS@CA flexible luminescent film. This luminescent film with high UV absorption in the range of 200–400 nm down converts UV photons into photons in visible, at 612 nm. We spin-coat the mixture solution of ETDS and CA onto the back surface of the transparent ITO/glass electrode to set up the ETDS@CA protected polymer solar cell. In this way, both UV protection and polymer solar cell efficiency enhancement are achieved. The experimental data indicated that ETDS@CA coated polymer solar cells can maintain 80% of the initial efficiency after UV-radiation for 1000 h, compared with 40% of unprotected polymer solar cells. Correspondingly, the efficiency of polymer solar cells has been enhanced by 4%. This method can be developed into a new and highly efficient way to UV protect polymer solar cells, as the original structure of polymer solar cells is not modified, with only an additional UV protection layer on the other side of the substrate.

Bimodal photoluminescence-magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technique has attracted tremendous attention due to its great potential in biomedical researches and clinical practices. Herein a novel multifunctional magnetoluminescent nanocomposite, FA-Gd-Tb@SiO 2 , was found to serve as an effective probe for bimodal time-gated luminescence/MR imaging of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo . The nanoprobe was designed by integrating a luminescent Tb 3+ complex, a Gd(III)-based contrast agent and a tumor-targeting molecule, folic acid (FA), into a silica nanoparticle . The integration of these functional moieties allows the nanoprobe to be employed for specific imaging of cancer cells with background-free TGL and non-invasive MR imaging modes. In addition, the optical and magnetic properties were dramatically improved after implicating the newly synthesized nanoarchitecture. In vitro cellular TGL imaging demonstrated that the FA-Gd-Tb@SiO 2 nanoprobe could recognize and accumulate in cancer cells overexpressing FA receptor. Furthermore, in vivo study revealed that the as-prepared nanoprobe was able to effectively enhance T 1 -weighted MR contrast and TGL intensity in tumor tissue, which might contribute to the precise detection and tracing of cancer cells, as well as diagnosis and therapy of tumor in clinical.
