In the present study, microwave-assisted biphasic extraction (MABE) was first and successfully applied to the simultaneous extraction of oil and sinigrin from field pennycress ( Thlaspi arvense ) through a one-pot process. Four potentially influencing factors on the yields of oil and sinigrin, including the ratio of lower phase to solid, ratio of upper phase to solid, microwave irradiation power, and microwave irradiation time, were selected for further optimization by Box–Behnken design, and the optimal extraction conditions were obtained as follows: ratio of lower phase to solid of 21 mL/g, ratio of upper phase to solid of 12 mL/g, microwave irradiation power of 389 W, and microwave irradiation time of 33 min. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the yields of oil (23.46 % ± 0.78 %) and sinigrin (18.42 ± 0.35 mg/g) from T. arvense seeds were maximized. The GC–MS analysis illustrated that the T. arvense seed oil obtained by MABE using n -hexane and water biphasic solvents and Soxhlet extraction using n -hexane solvent exhibited a similar fatty acid composition. The seed oil acquired by the efficient MABE demonstrated a higher quality due to its lower acid value and higher iodine value. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that the cell structure of seed tissues was obviously disrupted compared with untreated raw material and that treated by the conventional extraction method. In general, the results indicated that the proposed MABE is an efficient method for the extraction of oil and sinigrin from T. arvense seeds.

In order to produce an alternative energy of biodiesel using field pennycress ( Thlaspi arvense L.) seed oil, a novel Fe 3 O 4 /graphene oxide-phenylalanine bisulfate ionic liquid core-shell magnetic catalyst was developed. Ferroferric oxide nanoparticles and graphene oxide (GO) were employed to prepare a magnetic carrier of Fe 3 O 4 @GO nanocomposite which applied to immobilize phenylalanine bisulfate ionic liquid (PBIL). The immobilized PBIL was characterized by the means of characterization. The heterogeneous Fe 3 O 4 @ [email protected] catalyst was demonstrated to have a high catalytic efficiency that reached 92.38 % of biodiesel yield under the optimal conditions (methanol/oil molar ratio of 10:1, reaction temperature of 60 °C, reaction time of 4 h, catalyst dosage of 25 wt%, stirring speed of 1500 r/min). After transesterification processes, the catalyst could be easily removed from the reaction mixture with an external magnet and showed little deactivation after multiple recycles. The main properties of biodiesel product were reconcilable with the range of test standards of ASTM D6751 and EN 14214. In summary, the prepared Fe 3 O 4 @ [email protected] catalyst behaved a superiorly catalytic performance, which made the produced biodiesel possess the possibility of application to biofuel as an ideal substitution.

The ultrasound-assisted antisolvent precipitation method was used to prepare lignin nanoparticles fromThlaspi arvenseL. rhizomes. The influence of each experimental variable on the average particle size (APS) of the lignin nanoparticles was determined via single-factor experiments. The optimal conditions for the preparation of the lignin nanoparticles were investigated in detail, and the APS of the lignin nanoparticles was 118 ± 3 nm. Compared with those of untreated lignin, the lignin nanoparticles prepared via this method were spherical and evenly distributed, and the structure was not damaged. Ultrasound generated local extreme physical conditions through its cavitation effect to promote nucleation, triggered high-speed turbulence to refine the particle size and improve uniformity, and applied mechanical disturbance to inhibit particle agglomeration, which promoted the preparation of lignin nanoparticles with a small size and good dispersion. A solubility test revealed that the lignin nanoparticles had greater solubility, which was improved 9-fold. The determination of antioxidant capacity revealed that the lignin nanoparticles had high free radical scavenging activity, which provided a broader space for the multifaceted utilization of a kind of grass lignin with the structural characteristics ofT. arvenselignin (p-hydroxyphenyl lignin).

A dual-stage strategy purified isoorientin from Thlaspi arvense L. leaves. • X-5 resin enabled efficient pre-enrichment of target flavonoids. • Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @BA-Zn-MOFs selectively captured isoorientin via boronate affinity. • The magnetic adsorbent achieved rapid separation and good reusability. • Isoorientin purity reached 90.28% after integrated purification. Thlaspi arvense L. is a valuable industrial crop rich in bioactive flavonoids, specifically isoorientin and isovitexin. However, the efficient and selective separation of these isomers from complex plant matrices remains a significant challenge. In this study, a dual-stage purification strategy was developed by combining macroporous resin pre-enrichment with novel magnetic boronic acid-functionalized metal organic framework composites (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @BA Zn MOFs). The composite was synthesized via the coordinated assembly of 3,5-dicarboxyphenylboronic acid (BBDC) and zinc ions on magnetic silica cores. Systematic screening revealed X-5 resin as the optimal medium for preliminary enrichment, effectively removing major polar impurities. Subsequently, Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @BA-Zn-MOFs were employed to selectively capture isoorientin via reversible boronate affinity. Under optimized conditions (pH 8.0, 120 min), the composite demonstrated high selectivity for isoorientin because of the formation of catechol-type ortho-dihydroxy moiety. The magnetic properties facilitated rapid solid liquid separation within 15 s. HPLC analysis revealed that the purity of isoorientin significantly improved from that of the crude extract to 90.28%. Furthermore, the magnetic adsorbent exhibited satisfactory stability and reusability, maintaining approximately 60% of its initial capacity after five consecutive cycles. This integrated approach provides an efficient and highly selective laboratory-scale strategy for the selective purification of high-value flavonoids from industrial crop byproducts and may provide a basis for future scale-up studies.
