High-temperature thermal stability plays a crucial role in the structural application of pressureless liquid-phase sintered SiC (PLS-SiC) ceramics. In this paper, a PLS-SiC ceramic processed with CeO 2 –Al 2 O 3 as sintering additives with excellent high-temperature thermal stability was achieved by incorporating (Hf, Zr, Ta, Nb, Ti)B 2 (HEB) particles. Results showed that PLS-SiC ceramics with HEB-free underwent a structural change from dense to porous microstructure after annealing at 1800 °C/1 h. Conversely, PLS-SiC ceramics with the addition of 10 vol% HEB exhibited excellent thermal stability, as evidenced by the retention of their dense microstructure after exposure to annealing at 1800 °C/1 h. The possible primary reasons for this significantly different response to the thermal stability could be probably attributed to fact that HEB reacted with CeAlO 3 and SiC to form solid-phase products, subsequently inhibiting the formation of gas-phase products after decomposition of CeAlO 3 alone in a high-temperature vacuum environment. In addition, the formation of a compact protective outer layer containing Hf–Ta containing diboride in PLS-SiC ceramics during the annealing process could effectively hinder the volatilization of volatile substances at a high temperature.

Fully dense (Zr, Ti)B 2 -(Zr, Ti)C-SiC ceramics were prepared by reactive hot-pressing using ZrB 2 , TiC, and SiC as the initial materials for the first time. Effects of SiC addition on the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties were reported. The in-situ reaction between ZrB 2 and TiC as well as the SiC addition leads to the grain refinement. Besides, elongated (Zr, Ti)B 2 plate-like grains are obtained due to the occurrence of a transient liquid phase, which leads to the crack deflection in the matrix effectively. Mechanical properties are improved significantly due to grain-refinement and solid solution strengthening, and plate-like grains toughening effects. The ZrB 2 -10 mol%TiC composite with 10 mol% SiC additional exhibits good comprehensive mechanical properties of the hardness of 20.2 GPa, the flexural strength of 803 MPa, and the fracture toughness of 5.7 MPa m 1/2 .

To address the challenges of achieving densification at lower sintering temperatures and precise control over the microstructure in UHTCs-SiC, a novel reactive hot-pressing sintering technology was proposed to realize the low-temperature densification of fine and uniform (Zr,Ti)B 2 -(Zr,Ti)C-SiC ceramics, as well as the accurate tailoring of phase compositions. The intrinsic relationship between phase compositions, microstructural tailoring and mechanical performance was revealed. As the molar ratio of (Zr,Ti)C/(Zr,Ti)B 2 decreases, rod-shaped microstructural units (ultra-high temperature borides) progressively develop within the ceramic. These elongated features play a beneficial role in deflecting propagating cracks. When coupled with equiaxed (Zr,Ti)C grains, this combination allows the synergistic strengthening and toughening mechanisms to be fully activated, so the (Zr,Ti)B 2 -(Zr,Ti)C-SiC ceramics with a (Zr,Ti)C/(Zr,Ti)B 2 molar ratio of 1:2 exhibit a flexural strength of 479.2 MPa and a fracture toughness of 3.84 MPa·m 1/2 , which are 62.2 % and 40.7 % higher than those of (Zr,Ti)C-SiC ceramics, respectively.

Conventional ultra-high-temperature ceramic-modified carbon/carbon composites (C/C-UHTCs) face limitations such as excessive erosion in the gas environment of solid rocket motors (SRMs). In contrast, metal-reinforced C/C-UHTCs exhibit enhanced mechanical properties, thermophysical characteristics, and resistance to high-temperature erosion. These advantages indicate significant potential for metal-reinforced C/C-UHTCs to augment the thrust capabilities of SRMs. This study demonstrated the preparation of (Hf, Zr, Ti)C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)B 2 -W-Cu cermet modified C/C composites using slurry infiltration and reactive melt infiltration at 1400°C. The microstructure, formation mechanisms, mechanical properties, and thermophysical properties of C/C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)B 2 -W-Cu composite materials, as well as the ablation behavior of the composite materials under the SRM environment were compared. The results showed that the linear and mass ablation rates of the C/C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)B 2 -W-Cu composite material decreased by 112.1% and 160.4% (0.074 mm s −1 , 0.086 g s −1 ), respectively, compared with those of the C/C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)C composite material. This could be attributed to the formation of a dense, high-strength W-skeleton composite (Hf, Zr, Ti)O 2 oxide layer during the ablation of the C/C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)C-(Hf, Zr, Ti)B 2 -W-Cu composite, which effectively resisted erosion from high-temperature, high-speed and high-particle-concentration two-phase gas flow. This work presents a novel approach to enhancing the ablation resistance of C/C-UHTCs and holds significant promise for the development of structural materials in SRM environments.
