Synthesis of high pure Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlC powders from TiH2 powders as Ti source by tube furnace

Li Liang,Zhou Aiguo,Xu Lin,Li Zhengyang,Wang Libo

Titanium aluminum carbide (Ti 3 AlC 2 and Ti 2 AlC) powders were synthesized from TiH 2 powders instead of Ti powders as Ti source by a tube furnace under argon atmosphere without preliminary dehydrogenation. 95 wt% pure Ti 3 AlC 2 powders were synthesized from TiH 2 /1.1Al/2TiC at 1 450 °C for 120 min. High-purity Ti 2 AlC powders were also prepared from 3TiH 2 /1.5Al/C and 2TiH 2 /1.5Al/TiC powders at 1 400 °C for 120 min. The as-synthesized samples were porous and easy to be ground into powders. Sn or Si additives in starting materials increased the purity of synthesized Ti 3 AlC 2 obviously and expanded the temperature range for the synthesis of Ti 3 AlC 2 . With Si or Sn as additives, high pure Ti 3 AlC 2 was synthesized at 1 200 °C for 60 min from TiH 2 / x Si/Al/2TiC and TiH 2 / x Sn/Al/2TiC ( x = 0.1, 0.2), respectively.

Electrochemiluminescence platform for curcumin detection based on g-C3N4 of N-rich vacancy and Ti2AlC

Yujia Song,Li Tian,Ruidan Li,Yanjia Guo,Pengfei Han,Guangping Ma,Hanyue Jiang,Wenzhuo Wang,Juan Lu

In this work, g-C 3 N 4 of N-rich vacancy (CNNV) and mesoporous SiO 2 were synthesized. A novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for curcumin (Cur) based on CNNV@SiO 2 and Ti 2 AlC was constructed. An initial ECL signal was generated from the CNNV-S 2 O 8 2 − system. SiO 2 significantly adsorbed more S 2 O 8 2 − , thereby enhancing the ECL signal. Ti 2 AlC served as an effective co-reaction promoter, further amplifying the ECL signal of CNNV@SiO 2 -S 2 O 8 2 − system. With the addition of Cur, the ECL signal also decreased, which can be attributed to the resonance energy transfer (RET) mechanism between CNNV (donor) and Cur (acceptor). Under optimal conditions, a strong linear relationship was observed between the change in ECL signal (ΔI) and the logarithm of Cur concentration (lgC Cur ), spanning from 5 × 10 −15 to 5 × 10 −9  mol L −1 with a detection limit of 1.7 × 10 −15  mol L −1 . The constructed ECL sensor was successfully applied to detect Cur in real samples.

Lewis acid molten salt etched porous lamellar Ti2AlC powders for enhanced microwave absorption

Yi Liu,Qiqi Jia,Yao Yan,Ningkai Yuan,Wei Luo,Xiaoyan Yuan,Lei Wang,Shouwu Guo

Ti 2 AlC can be used as a microwave absorbent due to its good electrical conductivity. However, Ti 2 AlC powders synthesized using conventional solid phase reaction show low reflection loss (RL) and narrow effective absorption width (EAB), which greatly limits its application in the field of microwave absorption. Herein, porous lamellar Ti 2 AlC powders were firstly synthesized in NaCl/KCl molten salt using Ti powders, Al powders, and starch as reaction precursors, and then they were selectively etched with Lewis acid molten salt (CuCl 2 ) to prepare Ti 2 AlC/Cu/Ti 2 C hybrids. The results indicated that when the mass fraction of porous lamellar Ti 2 AlC powder in paraffin was 40 %, the maximum RL and EAB were −44.15 dB and 2.68 GHz, respectively. After Lewis acid molten salt etching, the RL and EAB of Ti 2 AlC/Cu/Ti 2 C hybrids increased to −54.88 dB and 4.48 GHz, respectively. The improvement of microwave absorption property could be attributed to the enhancement of polarization and conductivity losses caused by the formation of Ti 2 C MXene and copper nanoparticles. This study provides a simple way to tune the microstructure and microwave absorption capability of Ti 2 AlC.

Evolution of Phases, Microstructure, and Physical Properties of Ti2AlC-Reinforced Ag-Matrix Composites with Elevated Fabrication Temperature

Zhang Kaige,Ding Jianxiang,Ding Kuankuan,Xia Xinxin,Chen Liming,Ma Chengjian,Zhang Peigen,Sun ZhengMing

This work investigates the influence of sintering temperature on phase constitution, microstructure, and properties of Ti 2 AlC-reinforcing Ag-based composite. Part of active Al atomic layer in Ti 2 AlC migrates outward under the induction of relatively low sintering temperature (≤  800 °C) and then generates the Ti-Al compounds and TiC. By means of elemental analysis, obvious Ag-Al inter-diffusion is detected at Ag-Ti 2 AlC interface at 900 °C and then Al-deficient layer forms around slightly dissociated Ti 2 AlC particles. At elevated temperature (950 °C), more significant interface diffusion and dissociation accelerate the decomposition and oxidation of Ti 2 AlC and subsequently generate mixture of titanium and aluminum oxides (Ti x O y , Al x O y ). The oxides’ agglomeration and residual Ti 2 AlC lead to form network-like and ravine-like structure. The moderate Ag-Al inter-diffusion slightly increases the resistivity (94.59 × 10 −3 μΩ·m), but contributes to improving the interface bonding and mechanical properties (106 HV hardness, 298.6 MPa tensile strength) of Ag/Ti 2 AlC at 900 °C. However, the severe Ti 2 AlC decomposition and oxides agglomeration account for the significant deduction in electrical conductivity (132.79 × 10 −3 μΩ·m) and mechanical properties (87 HV, 222.3 MPa) at 950 °C. A mechanism is proposed to further understand the phase transition, microstructure evolution, and interface reaction of the Ag/Ti2AlC with the elevated sintering temperature.

Dendrite-Free Zinc Anodes via a Three-Dimensional Ti2AlC Coating for High-Performance Zinc-Ion Batteries

Qinning Gao,Wei He,Cancan Liu,Yurong You,Peigen Zhang,Lechuan Liu,Guangji Xu,Ke Gong,Aidi Zhang,ZhengMing Sun

Zinc-ion batteries have emerged as promising candidates for large-scale energy storage applications due to their low cost and high safety. However, the growth of zinc dendrites during Zn2+ deposition remains a critical obstacle to their commercialization. In this work, we first screened a more zincophilic MAX-phase material, Ti2AlC, through theoretical calculations of various common MAX-phase materials, and then developed a three-dimensional (3D) Ti2AlC MAX-phase coating on zinc metal (denoted as 3D-Ti2AlC@Zn) as an artificial intermediate phase to regulate the distribution of Zn2+ during plating/stripping. The MAX phase provides abundant active sites that attract Zn2+, while its 3D porous conductive network promotes uniform zinc deposition and suppresses dendrite formation, leading to enhanced cycling stability in aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Benefiting from the protective 3D-Ti2AlC coating, the symmetric cell exhibits an extended lifespan of over 1800 h at 1 mA/cm2. Moreover, full cells with MnO2 cathodes achieve higher specific capacity and improved stability compared to those using bare zinc anodes when they are operated at 2 A/g. This approach offers a viable strategy for developing durable zinc anodes, potentially accelerating the application of zinc-ion batteries in energy storage systems.

The Influence of Sintering Pressure on the Preparation, Friction Properties, and Magnetic Properties of Ti2AlC-TiC and Ti3AlC2-TiC Composites Under High-Pressure and High-Temperature

Liang Li,Yuqi Chen

Due to their high melting point, low density, and affordable price, TiC ceramics have emerged as one of the most promising ultrahigh temperature structural materials. However, its development and usage are severely constrained by its weak mechanical characteristics. The Ti2AlC-TiC and Ti3AlC2-TiC composites were synthesized by using the laminated metal-ceramic Ti2AlC/Ti3AlC2 as the binder, combined with high-temperature and high-pressure sintering technology (GPa order of magnitude confinement system). The thermal analysis shows that the exothermic heat of Ti/1.2Al/2TiC is less than that of 3Ti/1.2Al/2C, 2Ti/1.2Al/C, and 3Ti/1.5Al/C. The ratio of Ti/1.2Al/2TiC can suppress the thermal explosion phenomenon during the sintering process and improve the safety of the high-pressure sintering process. XRD results showed that the main composition of the sintered products was Ti2AlC-TiC at 2∼3.5 GPa and Ti3AlC2-TiC at 4∼5 GPa. As the sintering pressure increased from 2 GPa to 5 GPa, the bonding phase changed from Ti2AlC to Ti3AlC2. The thickness of the synthetic Ti3AlC2 layer is near 0.1 µm under 5 GPa. The average friction coefficient of Ti2AlC-TiC composites sintered 2 GPa with POM is as low as 0.1767, while the average friction coefficient of Ti3AlC2-TiC composites with POM increased to 0.3468∼0.3797. The wear width of Ti2AlC-TiC is lower than that of Ti3AlC2-TiC composites sintered under 4–4.5 GPa. The wear width of Ti3AlC2-TiC composites decreases following the rise of sintering pressure and is reduced to 0.3504 mm under 5 GPa. Ti2AlC-TiC and Ti3AlC2-TiC composites with PP ball counterparts have friction coefficients of 0.375 to 0.45 and worse wear resistance than that of POM balls. Ti3AlC2-TiC composites synthesized at 5 GPa with a Cu ball had the smallest friction coefficient (0.4558) and the smallest wear scar width (0.6289 mm). The friction coefficients and wear widths of synthetics with Al pairs ranged from 0.48–0.697 and 0.851–1.087 mm, respectively, and varied irregularly with increasing sintering pressure. Ti2AlC-TiC composites synthesized at 2 GPa with agate and glass pairs have coefficients of friction of 0.5 and 0.61, respectively. Abrasion widths of Ti2AlC-TiC composites synthesized at 2 GPa with agate and glass pairs were 1.3 mm and 0.72 mm, respectively. The friction coefficient of synthetics with agate and glass pairs increases with increasing sintering pressure. The magnetization and magnetization intensity of the Ti3AlC2-TiC composites are stronger than those of Ti3AlC2. Ti2AlC-TiC and Ti3AlC2-TiC composites held promise to serve in the field of ceramic grinding processing applications.

Molten Salt Synthesis of High-Purity Ti2AlC Powders and Fabrication of Conductive Ag/Ti2AlC Composites

Zheng Yue,Lisheng Cao,Jianxiang Ding,Shikun Ma,Yiming Cai,Haoyu Yang,Ruixiang Qiu,Jin Qian,Bo Li,Pengfei Feng,Wei Liu,Jinlong Wang,Chenghuan Huang

Ti2AlC, an important member of the MAX phase family, exhibits combined metallic and ceramic characteristics, showing potential for applications in conductive composites and high-temperature structural components. However, this phase possesses a narrow thermodynamic stability window, making high-purity synthesis challenging. Conventional solid-state synthesis requires temperatures exceeding 1300 °C, where aluminum volatilization and kinetic limitations of carbon diffusion lead to impurity phases such as TiC and Ti3AlC2. Based on the ionic transport characteristics of molten salt media, this study employed the eutectic NaCl-KCl molten salt method to synthesize Ti2AlC using Ti, Al, and TiC powders within the temperature range of 1000–1150 °C. Systematic investigations revealed that an optimized raw powder composition (Ti:Al:TiC = 1:1.10:0.95) at 1100 °C yielded Ti2AlC powders with 96.1% phase purity, high crystallinity, and typical laminated structure with stable stoichiometry (Ti/Al ≈ 2:1). Furthermore, Ag/Ti2AlC composites demonstrated excellent electrical conductivity (resistivity of 5.72 μΩ·cm) and favorable mechanical properties, validating the applicability of this synthetic route for conductive composite materials.

Anisotropic corrosion of Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2 in supercritical water at 500 ºC

Yina Du,Ji-Xuan Liu,Yifeng Gu,Xin-Gang Wang,Fangfang Xu,Guo-Jun Zhang

Textured and untextured M n+1 AX n compounds, Ti 2 AlC and Ti 3 AlC 2 , namely MAX phases have been synthesized and examined with respect to their corrosion resistance in static supercritical water at 500   °C. The textured ceramics were obtained by hot forging process at high temperatures. Both X-ray diffraction and SEM analysis revealed well alignment of c -plane of MAX phases parallel to the hot-forging surface. Better corrosion resistance on the surface perpendicular to the hot-forged direction was verified by SEM. On the other hand, the side surfaces of the samples showed thick oxidation layers and abundant cracks. The (00 l ) faces consist of strongly bonded Ti 3 C 2 and Ti 2 C layers in Ti 3 AlC 2 and Ti 2 AlC, respectively, hence exhibit higher resistance to water corrosion. On the contrary, the side surfaces where most of weakly bonded interlayers of these hexagonal phases were exposed tend to be easily corroded especially through Al-layers. The corrosion process involved a phase transition of oxidized product, i.e. TiO 2 from anatase to rutile phase, which gave rise to the formation of cracks due to accompanied volume changes.

Preparation of TiC/Ti2AlC coating on carbon fiber and investigation of the oxidation resistance properties

Mian Li,Kai Wang,Ji Wang,Dewu Long,Yanqin Liang,Liu He,Feng Huang,Shiyu Du,Qing Huang

MAX phases were proposed as the interphase materials for carbon fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites toward the applications in high-dose irradiation and oxidation environments. A thickness-controllable TiC/Ti 2 AlC coating was fabricated on carbon fiber using an in situ reaction in a molten salt bath. The coating showed a multilayered structure, in which the inner layer was TiC and the outer layer was Ti 2 AlC. The influence of the reaction conditions on the morphology, composition, and thickness of the coating was investigated. The oxidation resistance properties of the as-prepared TiC/Ti 2 AlC-coated carbon fiber in static air and water vapor flow at elevated temperatures were investigated. The results showed that the as-prepared TiC/Ti 2 AlC coating could provide good protection to the carbon fiber in both static air and water vapor flow up to 800°C. As these TiC and Ti 2 AlC materials have good irradiation resistance, the present work provides a potential way to develop an irradiation-resistant interphase of carbon-fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites for nuclear applications. Furthermore, this work also provides a feasible way to prepare carbide/MAX phase coating on other carbon materials.

Effect of Nb addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of additively manufactured Ti2AlC MAX-phase ceramic matrix composites

Shurui Li,Kai Zhang,Zhilong Yan,Tingting Liu,Zhiguang Zhu,Zhiwei Xiong,Zhiyong Zou,Jiansen Li,Wenhe Liao

The Ti 2 AlC MAX-phase ceramic matrix composites were successfully additively manufactured from the Ti, Al, Nb and C elemental powders via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) plus pressureless sintering (PLS) process. The phase formation, microstructure evolution , and mechanical properties of the as-fabricated samples were systematically analyzed under different Nb contents and sintering temperatures . The Nb content and sintering temperatures can significantly affect the phase formation and microstructure of samples. In the LPBF stage, all the samples are composed of TiC, Ti 3 Al, and TiAl, while adding Nb into the Ti-Al-C system powders can promote Ti 2 AlC MAX-phase. Furthermore, doping of Nb induce the transformation from Ti 2 AlC to Ti 3 AlC during the subsequent PLS. With increasing the sintering temperature from 1200 °C to 1400 °C, the width of Ti 2 AlC lamellar structure increases from 0.36 µm to 1.58 µm. The compressive strength of the Ti 2 AlC MAX-phase ceramic samples ranges between 17.5 MPa and 30.3 MPa. The optimal compressive strength of Ti 2 AlC MAX-phase ceramic matrix ceramic composite (30.3 MPa) was achieved under optimized Nb content (1 wt%) and sintering temperature (1300 °C). This work could shed light on designing Ti 2 AlC MAX-phase ceramic from the microalloying perspective via LPBF and sintering.

Superwetting MAX@SiO2 coatings with high photothermal conversion performances for efficient seawater desalination and anti-/de-icing

Helong Zhang,Chuxiong Qiu,Rong Zhang,Hao Zhang,Yunxia Chen,Tao Zeng,Fen Qiao,Lee Li,Ghafar Ali,Xiujian Zhao,Yi Xie

We develop layered MAX (e.g., Ti 3 AlC 2 , Ti 3 AlCN, Ti 2 AlC, Ti 2 AlN) into novel photothermal silica-deposited MAX (MAX@SiO 2 ) composites and coatings for efficient seawater desalination and anti-/de-icing, by combining their strong optical absorbance capacity covering UV-Vis-NIR regions with unique surface wettability. The water evaporator with a unique gradient superhydrophilicity-hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity-superhydrophobicity is achieved by incorporating the as-synthesized hydroxyl- and methyl-modified MAX@SiO 2 composites into porous melamine foam (MF). By combining the unique gradient wettability with porous structure and strong optical absorbance, the proposed MAX@SiO 2 evaporator displays excellent seawater desalination performance with high water evaporation rates of ∼2.19 and 3.45 kg m −2  h −1 under 1.0 and 2.0 sun irradiation, respectively. The photothermal water evaporation efficiency can reach to 91.2 % under 1.0 sun illumination. Besides, by sequential spray-depositing resin-based primer and MAX@SiO 2 top-coat on glass slides and insulators, the as-achieved superhydrophobic (SH) photothermal coatings displayed excellent anti-icing and de-icing performances. The procedures described here enable a convenient and novel strategy to develop micro-nanocomposites and multifunctional coatings with strong photothermal conversion ability, which would shed light on promising potentials in energy conversion and photo-thermal applications including solar freshwater generation, sewage purification, and anti-/de-icing.

Molten salt dynamic sealing synthesis of MAX phases (Ti3AlC2, Ti3SiC2 et al.) powder in air

Zetan Liu,Jingkun Xu,Xiaoqing Xi,Weijia Luo,Ji Zhou

Since the synthesis of non-oxidized ceramic and alloy powders requires both high temperature and oxygen insulation conditions, here we demonstrate a cost-efficient molten salt sealing/shielded synthesis method with dynamic gas tightness. Compared to conventional synthesis method, it can prevent the loss of reaction materials at high temperature, cut off the connection between reacting material and outside air, and does not require long-time ball milling mixing treatment or provision of applied pressing before or during heating. Only low-cost salts (e.g., NaCl, KCl), a few minutes of raw material mixing, and regular heating molds are required to obtain high-purity (>96 wt%), micron-sized Ti 3 AlC 2 and Ti 3 SiC 2 powders with narrow size distribution, which significantly decreased the complexity and production costs in the synthesis process. The effect of temperature and raw material content on the products were investigated. The mechanism of diffusion reaction between reactants in molten salt environment was analyzed. The new method developed here was also applicable to Ti 2 AlC, V 2 AlC and Cr 2 AlC MAX phases, as well as provided new ideas for the preparation of other MXenes precursors with certain stoichiometric ratios, air-sensitive materials and nanopowders .
