Titanium tin carbide (Ti2SnC) is a member a MAX phases, which are ternary carbides or nitrides with layered structure. Ti powders are normally used as Ti source to synthesize Ti2SnC. In this paper, TiH2, a relative cheaper Ti source, was used to synthesize Ti2SnC. Ti2SnC was synthesized from TiH2/Sn/TiC or TiH2/Sn/graphite powders by a tube furnace at different temperatures under Ar atmosphere. From the analysis of X-ray diffraction results, the lowest temperature to synthesize Ti2SnC was 1000 °C. Ti2SnC content increased with temperature, and high purity Ti2SnC was fabricated at 1200 °C. From scanning electron microscopy, as-synthesized Ti2SnC from TiH2/Sn/TiC was with plate-like structure. However, for Ti2SnC from graphite as carbon source, there was some stripe microstructure. Some large pores existed between the Ti2SnC particles. The existence of the pores make the mechanical properties of Ti2SnC block significantly reduced, its compressive strength was only 0.483 MPa or 0.35 MPa respectively for samples synthesized from TiC or graphite as carbon source. The low mechanical properties make the porous sample easy to be broken as powders.

Micro- and nano-sized one-dimensional (1D) metallic materials exhibit tremendous potential in various technological applications such as flexible and transparent electrodes, sensing, and catalysis. However, achieving eco-friendly and large-scale fabrication of diverse 1D metals remains a formidable challenge. The occurrence of A-site whisker growth from MAX phase presents an opportunity for developing an innovative 1D metal fabrication technique. Herein, we investigate the significant role of oxygen in promoting whisker growth from mechanically damaged Ti 2 SnC MAX phase. Our findings reveal that oxidation of the M-site (titanium) in Ti 2 SnC phases enhances the formation of atomized tin, which plays a crucial role in tin whisker growth. Furthermore, by employing alternative MAX phase precursors, this technique demonstrates the potential to fabricate 1D metals beyond tin. The diverse A-site elements in MAX phases suggest that this approach could serve as a universal strategy for synthesizing various 1D metallic materials. Graphical abstract

Tin-based anode materials, while notable for their high volumetric capacity, often experience rapid capacity decay during cycling due to volume expansion, pulverization, and agglomeration. Herein, we synthesized a nanoscale composite through a thermo-mechanochemical process utilizing the mechanical anisotropy of Ti 2 SnC MAX phase. This composite incorporates in-situ generated nano-Sn particles within a Ti 2 SnC matrix characterized by Sn vacancies. The strategic integration of uniformly nano-Sn particles and the refined granularity of the Ti 2 SnC matrix markedly enhance the electrochemical properties of the anode. Impressively, it maintains a volumetric capacity of 1430 mAh cm −3 after 400 cycles, equivalent to approximately 3370 h, at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 . Post-cycling analysis reveals the transformation of Sn into a nanocrystalline state and the gradual exposure of more Sn active sites within the Ti 2 SnC matrix, significantly enhancing lithium-ion storage performance. This study highlights the crucial role of the A-site atomic layer in MAX phases and, considering the compositional diversity of MAX phases, offers new insights and broad applicability in lithium-ion battery technologies.

In this research work, the Ti2SnC MAX phase (MP) was synthesized via the reactive sintering procedure. The layered and crystalline structure of this MP was verified by SEM, HRTEM, and XRD analyses. This nano-additive was used for improvement of different features of the polyethersulfone (PES) polymeric membranes. The blended membranes containing diverse quantities of the MP (0–1 wt%) were fabricated by a non-solvent-induced phase inversion method. The asymmetric structure of the membranes with small holes in the top layer and coarse finger-like holes and macro-voids in the sublayer was observed by applying SEM analysis. The improvement of the membrane’s hydrophilicity was verified via reducing the contact angle of the membranes from 63.38° to 49.77° (for bare and optimum membranes, respectively). Additionally, in the presence of 0.5 wt% MP, the pure water flux increased from 286 h to 355 L/m2h. The average roughness of this membrane increased in comparison with the bare membrane, which shows the increase in the filtration-available area. The high separation efficiency of the oil/water emulsion (80%) with an improved flux recovery ratio of 65% was illustrated by the optimum blended membrane.

This study investigated the erosion and degradation mechanisms of Ti 2 SnC during arc discharge at 9 kV across varying gas mixtures (N 2 /CO 2 , SF 6 /CO 2 , SF 6 /N 2 ) using a custom-built experimental setup with controllable ambient atmosphere. Arc parameters were recorded in real time using an oscilloscope. The microscopic and three-dimensional morphologies of the eroded zones were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and three-dimensional laser scanning confocal microscopy (3D SLCM). The composition of the eroded regions was characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), revealing the arc erosion mechanism of Ti 2 SnC in these mixed atmospheres. The results demonstrate that arc parameters are significantly influenced by the ambient atmosphere. The highest arc energy, arc duration, and eroded area were observed in the N 2 /CO 2 mixture, decreasing in the order N 2 /CO 2 , SF 6 /CO 2 , SF 6 /N 2 , while the breakdown strength exhibited the opposite trend. The eroded regions in all mixed atmospheres exhibited an approximately elliptical shape with typical arc erosion features such as protrusions, craters, pores, and cracks, the morphology of which is governed by the arc structure. The ionization priority of the mixed atmosphere and the arc energy collectively determine the composition of the final erosion products: SnO 2 and TiO 2 predominantly formed in N 2 /CO 2 , SnO 2 and SnF 4 were the main products in SF 6 /CO 2 , and Sn 3 N 4 was primarily generated in SF 6 /N 2 . This research expands the application scope of MAX phase materials and provides a theoretical foundation for the design of novel electrical contact materials.

The exceptional synergy of ceramic and metallic properties within MAX phases positions them as highly promising for a wide array of applications. However, their stability has been threatened by the phenomenon of A-site metal whisker growth. Herein, we have significantly mitigated tin whisker growth in Ti 2 SnC by incorporating vanadium solutes at its M-site. With an increase in vanadium concentration, there is a marked reduction in the degree of decomposition of the M-site solid solution when subjected to the same level of externally destructive treatments, thereby inhibiting whisker proliferation. Both experimental outcomes and theoretical calculations reveal that the vanadium solid solution augments the hardness, Pugh’s ratio, and Poisson’s ratio of Ti 2 SnC, enhancing its mechanical strength and toughness. The incorporation of V atoms introduces stronger V–C and V–Sn bonds, as evidenced by its electronic density of states and bulk modulus , thus significantly bolstering the resistance of MAX phases against decomposition and effectively curtailing whisker growth. Additionally, the phenomenon reported in this paper also conforms to the electrostatic theory of whisker growth. This work for the first time achieves the suppression of A-site whisker growth through an M-site solid solution , thereby extending their potential for applications where durability and reliability are paramount.
