Cu2O/Ti3C2MXene heterojunction photocatalysts for improved CO2 photocatalytic reduction performance

Junzheng Zhang,Jingjing Shi,Sheng Tao,Lei Wu,Jun Lu

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction has been viewed as a promising approach to relieve the energy crisis and green-house effect. Cheap and high performance cocatalyst is an effective approach to enhance the photocatalytic activity . Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXene) is a new family of 2D layered materials, which can be served as an electron conductor. In this work, Cu 2 O/Ti 3 C 2 T x heterojunction composites were prepared by in situ hydrothermal growth method. Cu 2 O/Ti 3 C 2 T x with the different percentages of ultrathin Ti 3 C 2 T x (2, 5, 10, 20 and 30 mg) nanosheet in the heterostructured catalysts are noted as CuTi-X (X = 2, 5, 10, 20, 30). As prepared CuTi-10 exhibits the highest photocatalytic CO 2 reaction activity (17.55 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 for CO and 0.96 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 for CH 4 ), which is 3.1 and 4.0 times higher than that of pure Cu 2 O (5.73 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 for CO and 0.24 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 for CH 4 , respectively). The advantage of the in situ growth endows the Cu 2 O/Ti 3 C 2 T x heterojunction contact interface, which is conductive to the separation of photogenerated electrons-hole pairs. The main reason is analysed and can be attributed to that Ti 3 C 2 T x can served as an electron acceptor due to its excellent conductive properties, rendering that more photo generated electrons attend the CO 2 reduction reaction. This provides a strategy to construct the Cu 2 O/Ti 3 C 2 T x heterojunction for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

Interfacial optimization of PtNi octahedrons@Ti3C2MXene with enhanced alkaline hydrogen evolution activity and stability

Yu Yan,Rongzun Zhang,Yadong Yu,Zhimei Sun,Renchao Che,Bin Wei,Alec P. LaGrow,Zhongchang Wang,Wei Zhou

It remains a great challenge to balance the activity and stability of platinum and Pt-based hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts in alkaline electrolyte. Herein, two-dimension monolayer Ti 3 C 2 MXene sheets were introduced to support PtNi octahedrons (PtNi@Ti 3 C 2 MXene), which optimizes the activity and stability of PtNi nanoparticles (NPs) through interface interactions between PtNi and Ti 3 C 2 MXene. It shows a small overpotential of 36 mV with a Tafel slope of 59 mV dec −1 at 10 mA cm -2 in 1 M KOH. It also exhibits excellent mass activity of 6.31 mA μg Pt -1 at an overpotential of 70 mV, which is ∼7.1 times that of commercial Pt/C and better than many recent reported Pt-based alkaline HER catalysts. Meanwhile, the PtNi@Ti 3 C 2 MXene gives an increased overpotential of ∼4 mV while the PtNi gives ∼25 mV during a long-time continuous CV cycles. A series of characterizations disclose these interfaces could promote the stability by alleviating the Ni atoms dissolution from surficial PtNi through uniformly lattice strain dispersion of PtNi. Simultaneously, they could keep the activity by interfacial electron transfer from PtNi to Ti 3 C 2 MXene demonstrated both by experimental tests (UPS, electrostatic potential and charge density distribution) and DFT calculation. It could decrease the energy barrier of H 2 O adsorbing and dissociating into hydrogen intermediates, further accelerating the recombination of hydrogen intermediates to H 2 . Under acidic and neutral medium, the electrocatalyst also exhibits improved HER performance compared to its counterparts. This work provides an interface optimization route for developing high-efficiency pH-universal especially alkaline HER electrocatalysts.

Robust degradation of tetracycline antibiotic through recyclable Fe3S4/Ti3C2MXene composites

Pascaline Sanga,Jia Chen,Jing Xiao,Bei Liu,Haitham Saad Al-mashriqi,Hongdeng Qiu

The efficient and sustainable removal of tetracycline (TC) from wastewater is a matter of great significance. In this study, we present a novel technique that effectively degrades TC by harnessing the synergistic effects of Fe3S4/Ti3C2MXene. The Fe3S4/Ti3C2MXene composite, specifically designed for this purpose, exhibits exceptional magnetic properties derived from Fe3S4. Our research demonstrates that this composite significantly enhances TC degradation through Fenton activity, achieving an impressive degradation rate of over 90%. Notably, when TC is subjected to the Fe3S4/Ti3C2MXene + H2O2 system, it generates a substantial amount of reactive oxygen species, including ˙OH and ˙O2−. Among these species, ˙OH, primarily produced on the surface of Fe3S4/Ti3C2MXene, plays a dominant role in TC degradation. In contrast, pristine Fe3S4 or Ti3C2MXene alone does not exhibit comparable degradation capabilities under similar conditions. Moreover, the Fe3S4/Ti3C2MXene composite demonstrates excellent reusability and high stability over four consecutive cycles. Gas/liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/LC–MS) analysis was utilized to identify the intermediates of TC degradation, and a possible degradation pathway was proposed. These findings highlight the potential of Fe3S4/Ti3C2MXene composites in enhancing the Fenton degradation process and unveil an encouraging tactic for the successful elimination of TC from wastewater.

Enhancement of photocatalytic bromate reduction by TiO2 coupled with Ti3C2MXene as efficient non-noble cocatalyst: Performance and mechanism

Shasha Tang,Jie Yao,Hongyuan Liu,Yan Zhang

Although considered as a promising candidate for photocatalytic bromate reduction, TiO 2 is restricted by its fast recombination of photo-induced charge carriers. In this paper, a series of efficient photocatalysts (TiO 2 /TC) were prepared by coupling commercial titania (P25) with titanium carbide MXene (Ti 3 C 2 ) via a simple hydrothermal method, where Ti 3 C 2 was utilized as a noble-metal-free cocatalyst. Batch experiments of photocatalytic bromate removal by TiO 2 /TC composites were conducted under UV irradiation. Its performance and mechanism were also investigated. The results showed that more than 95% of bromate could be removed by TiO 2 /TC-1 composite (Ti 3 C 2 and P25 in a mass ratio of 1%) in 15 min, and its removal rate was 4.87 times higher than that of pure P25. The photocatalytic reduction of bromate by TiO 2 /TC was an interfacial reaction, and bromide was the main product. The greatly improved activity of TiO 2 /TC composites was attributed to the improved separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers and narrower band gap. TiO 2 /TC-1 composite exhibited a longer lifetime (6.05 ns) of electron-hole pairs than pristine P25 (4.31 ns). Moreover, due to its excellent electrical conductivity, Ti 3 C 2 functioned as “an electron sink” to accumulate photoinduced electrons from the excited P25. And the Schottky barrier formed in the tight Ti 3 C 2 -P25 interface provided a unidirectional channel for electron transfer , facilitating the separation of electron-hole pairs. In addition, TiO 2 /TC-1 composite had a good stability in bromate removal. This work highlights the potential of Ti 3 C 2 as a noble-metal-free photocatalytic cocatalyst and explores the possible expansion of the application of MXene.

MXene-Functionalized Light-Induced Antimicrobial and Waterproof Polyacrylate Coating for Cementitious Materials Protection

Hongping Zhang,Pengfei Tang,Youhong Tang,Kun Yang,Qingyuan Wang

The penetration of external stimuli (microorganisms, ions, etc.) following to the pore is the key reason for the deterioration of cement and concrete structures. Although the traditional methods such as improving the chemical composition of cement and concrete materials can delay the erosion rate, the inevitable pore structure still makes its deterioration a challenge. Based on this, we reported a protective coating for cementitious materials based on phenol and Ti3C2MXene-modified polyacrylate (MXene-PG/PA). The introduction of phenols enhanced the waterproof properties of polyacrylate by increasing the interaction among molecular chains. Moreover, the introduction of Ti3C2MXene also endows the MXene-PG/PA coating with good light-induced antimicrobial properties. Beneficial to these designs, the MXene-PG/PA coating exhibited good waterproof properties (the water absorption ratio in seawater decreased by 58.2%) and antimicrobial properties (inhibition ofE. coliandS. epidermidisactivity under light). These results not only confirm that the MXene-PG/PA coating is a potential candidate of protective coating for cement-based materials, but also provide a new strategy for the design of multifunctional protective coatings. Keywords:protection coating;Ti3C2MXene;waterproof;antimicrobial;cement-based materials

Few Layer Ti3C2 MXene-Based Label-Free Aptasensor for Ultrasensitive Determination of Chloramphenicol in Milk

Fang Li,Shuyue Xiong,Pei Zhao,Panpan Dong,Zijian Wu

Quantitative detection of veterinary drug residues in animal-derived food is of great significance. In this work, a simple and label-free electrochemical aptasensor for the highly sensitive detection of chloramphenicol (CAP) in milk was successfully developed based on a new biosensing method, where the single- or few-layer Ti3C2MXene nanosheets functionalized via the specific aptamer by self-assembly were used as electrode modifiers for a glassy carbon electrode (aptamer/Ti3C2MXene/GCE). Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), and so on were utilized for electrochemical and morphological characterization. Under the optimized conditions, the constructed aptasensor exhibited excellent performance with a wider linearity to CAP in the range from 10 fM to 1 μM and a low detection limit of 1 fM. Aptamer/Ti3C2MXene/GCE demonstrated remarkable selectivity over other potentially interfering antibiotics, as well as exceptional reproducibility and stability. In addition, the aptasensor was successfully applied to determine CAP in milk with acceptable recovery values of 96.13% to 108.15% and relative standard deviations below 9%. Therefore, the proposed electrochemical aptasensor is an excellent alternative for determining CAP in food samples.Keywords:label-free;electrochemical aptasensor;chloramphenicol;Ti3C2MXene nanosheets

High-Performance Detection of Exosomes Based on Synergistic Amplification of Amino-Functionalized Fe3O4 Nanoparticles and Two-Dimensional MXene Nanosheets

Linlin Zhuang,Qiannan You,Xue Su,Zhimin Chang,Mingfeng Ge,Qian Mei,Li Yang,Wenfei Dong,Li Li

Exosomes derived from cancer cells have been recognized as a promising biomarker for minimally invasive liquid biopsy. Herein, a novel sandwich-type biosensor was fabricated for highly sensitive detection of exosomes. Amino-functionalized Fe3O4nanoparticles were synthesized as a sensing interface with a large surface area and rapid enrichment capacity, while two-dimensional MXene nanosheets were used as signal amplifiers with excellent electrical properties. Specifically, CD63 aptamer attached Fe3O4nanoprobes capture the target exosomes. MXene nanosheets modified with epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) aptamer were tethered on the electrode surface to enhance the quantification of exosomes captured with the detection of remaining protein sites. With such a design, the proposed biosensor showed a wide linear range from 102particles μL−1to 107particles μL−1for sensing 4T1 exosomes, with a low detection limit of 43 particles μL−1. In addition, this sensing platform can determine four different tumor cell types (4T1, Hela, HepG2, and A549) using surface proteins corresponding to aptamers 1 and 2 (CD63 and EpCAM) and showcases good specificity in serum samples. These preliminary results demonstrate the feasibility of establishing a sensitive, accurate, and inexpensive electrochemical sensor for detecting exosome concentrations and species. Moreover, they provide a significant reference for exosome applications in clinical settings, such as liquid biopsy and early cancer diagnosis.Keywords:exosomes;Ti3C2MXene;magnetic nanoparticles;electrochemical biosensor;synergistic amplification

An Enzymatic Biosensor for the Detection of D-2-Hydroxyglutaric Acid in Serum and Urine

Bo Wu,Zehua Li,Zepeng Kang,Chunling Ma,Haiyan Song,Fuping Lu,Zhiguang Zhu

D-2-hydroxyglutaric acid (D2HG) is overproduced as a result of the D-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria and relevant cancers, caused by gene mutation. Accurate analysis of D2HG could help rapid diagnosis of these diseases and allow for timely treatment. In this work, a D-2-hydroxyglutarate dehydrogenase fromRalstonia solanacearum(RsD2HGDH) is cloned and recombinantly expressed. This enzyme features the direct electron transfer to chemical electron mediators (such as methylene blue (MB)) in the absence of additional coenzymes. Therefore, NAD+, a natural electron acceptor for the commercial D2HGDH and usually known for being unstable and difficult for immobilization can be avoided in the preparation of biosensors. TheRsD2HGDH and MB are co-immobilized on a two-dimensional material, Ti3C2MXene, followed by drop-coating on the gold screen-printed electrode (AuSPE) to construct a compact and portable biosensor. The D2HG in samples can be catalyzed byRsD2HGDH, where the current change is measured by chronoamperometry at −0.23 V. The biosensor shows a D2HG detection range of 0.5 to 120 µM (R2= 0.9974) with a sensitivity of 22.26 μA mM−1cm−2and a detection limit of 0.1 µM (S/N = 3). The biosensor retains 72.52% performance of its incipient state after 30 days of storage. The samples of D2HG-containing fetal bovine serum and artificial urine were analyzed with the recovery of 99.56% to 106.83% and 97.30% to 102.47% further indicating the great application potential of our portable D2HG biosensor.Keywords:D-2-hydroxyglutaric acid;MXene;biosensor;screen-printed electrode;D-2-hydroxyglutarate dehydrogenase
