Agglomeration behavior of TiB 2 particles in 5%TiB 2 /Al-4.5%Cu composites (all compositions are in wt.% unless otherwise specified) is studied by adding different content of Mg to improve its strength and ductility, a widely used in-situ molten salt reaction process is used to produce the composites. The results show that addition of Mg could not only significantly segregate TiB 2 particles but also further refine the α-Al grains and then improve the mechanical properties of the composites on the basis of TiB 2 particles. Here, 0.5% Mg is considered the optimum mass fraction for dispersion, refinement, and modification of particles based on the results of investigation. The yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), elastic Young’s modulus (EM), and Vicker’s hardness (VHN) of the composites in T6 heat treatment are increased to 375 MPa, 486 MPa, 88 GPa, and 167 HV - an improvement of 21.8%, 16.5%, 20.9%, and 9.4%, respectively, versus the original TiB 2 /Al-4.5%Cu composite (308 MPa, 417 MPa, 63 GPa, and 153 HV). The elongation of the composite is improved by 20.9%. These merits are mainly attributed to addition of Mg, which increases the surface-spread coefficient of TiB 2 particles by reducing the surface tension of the Al melt, thereby improving the wettability .

In this study, a heat-resistant adhesive was prepared using molybdenum-phenolic (Mo-PF) resin as the matrix and TiB2particle as the ceramizable filler for bonding Al2O3ceramic substrates. Firstly, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) was used to characterize the chemical structure of the Mo-PF. Subsequently, thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and shear strength testing were employed to investigate the effects of heat treatment in different atmospheres on the thermal stability and residual bonding properties of the adhesive. To further explore the bonding mechanism of the adhesive after heat treatment in different atmospheres, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), compressive strength testing, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were utilized to analyze the microstructure, mechanical strength, and composition evolution of the adhesive at different temperatures. The bonding strength of Al2O3joints showed a trend of initially decreasing and then increasing after different temperature heat treatment in air, with the shear strength reaching a maximum value of 25.68 MPa after treatment at 1200 °C. And the bonding strength of Al2O3joints decreased slowly with the increase of temperature in nitrogen. In air, the ceramicization reaction at a high temperature enabled the mechanical strength of the adhesive to rise despite the continuous pyrolysis of the resin. However, the TiB2filler in nitrogen did not react, and the properties of the adhesive showed a decreasing tendency with the pyrolysis of the resin.

This study aims to achieve synergistic strength-ductility enhancement of semi-solid squeeze cast 6TiB 2 /Al–17Si–4Cu composites through in-situ particle strengthening and T6 heat treatment. The microstructure and mechanical properties of 6TiB 2 /Al–17Si–4Cu composites with different heat treatments were investigated. TiB 2 particles are semi-coherent with α-Al and primary Si, respectively. The nanoscale precipitate phases were determined by their crystal orientation relationships. The results showed that they are θ and θʹ phases. Meanwhile, the research results pertaining to the mechanical properties imply that the strength and ductility are enhanced by the TiB 2 particles and Al 2 Cu precipitates. The optimum heat treatment process (solution treatment for 9 h at 520 °C and aging for 8 h at 170 °C) of strengthened 6TiB 2 /Al–17Si–4Cu composites is revealed in this study, when the ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the composites are 263.3 MPa and 0.51%, respectively. The mechanisms governing the enhanced strength and ductility of 6TiB 2 /Al–17Si–4Cu composites were discussed.
