While high-efficiency photocatalysts have been extensively researched, there is still a scarcity of reports focusing on enhancing the practical application conditions of low-cost engineering photocatalysts. In this study, a 13.8-L continuous streamer catalytic reactor was developed utilizing low-cost self-made TiO 2 /ACF photocatalyst. Employing the Box-Behnke response surface method, the study assessed the reactor’s efficiency in treating organic wastewater using methylene blue (MB) as the model pollutant. The TiO 2 /ACF photocatalysis was characterized by XRD, EDS, and SEM, and the results showed that the nano-TiO 2 was uniformly loaded with the surface of activated carbon fibers in a lamellar form. Results indicated that with a single cycle time of 134 min and a catalyst amount of 95 cm × 95 cm, the average decolorization rate for 3 mg/L MB wastewater was 90.63%, following quasi-second-order kinetics. The MB wastewater’s decolorization efficiency swiftly reached 89.8% within the initial 120 min, maintaining around 90% during continuous 600-min treatment. The optimal catalyst condition was identified, enhancing photodegradation efficiency of MB organic molecules. The developed photocatalytic equipment exhibited high efficiency and stability in degrading low-concentration organic molecules.
Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) air pollutants could worsen air quality and adversely affect human health, thus developing more efficient low-temperature VOCs removal techniques is desired. A novel continuous system integrating UV-assisted photo-electrochemical catalysis with microbial fuel cell (UV-assisted PEC-MFC) has been established for promoting removal of gaseous ethyl acetate or toluene and generating electricity simultaneously. In this system, CeO 2 /TiO 2 /ACF catalytic cathode is prepared and used for combination with bio-anode for accelerating cathodic reaction . This UV-assisted PEC-MFC system exhibits an excellent elimination capacity (EC) of ethyl acetate (∼0.39 g/m 3 , EC: ∼2.52 g/m 3 /h) or toluene (∼0.29 g/m 3 , EC: 1.89 g/m 3 /h) under close-circuit condition. Furthermore, an outstanding elimination capacity (EC: 28.04 g/m 3 /h) for high concentration toluene (∼4.10 g/m 3 ) removal is obtained after toluene gas passes sequentially through the catalytic cathode then the bio-anode. This way of PEC degradation and biodegradation, avoids inhibition of exoelectrogens activity from toxicity of high concentration toluene. Simultaneously, the cell voltage of UV-assisted PEC-MFC system is stable at 0.11 V (vs. SCE) and 1.452×10 −4 kWh is generated from treatment of toluene gas stream in 6 h duration time. The possible mechanism of VOCs removal in this novel system has been proposed and discussed. This study provides new technical basis for treating gaseous pollutants via integrating photo-electrochemical catalysis with electricity generating microbial fuel cell for energy conversion.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), obtained by reduction from AgNO 3 solution and stabilized in polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), have been synthesized by γ-ray radiolysis . The application of photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation in ethylene gas treatment using a TiO 2 photocatalyst combined with as-prepared AgNPs on activated carbon fiber (ACF) ([Ag+TiO 2 ]/ACF) as a photoelectrode in a Nafion-based photoelectrocatalytic cell is presented. The effects on the PEC degradation of C 2 H 4 of the preparation parameters of the AgNPs, such as the radiation dose and the amount of PVP added, have been systematically investigated. Emphasis is placed on comparison of the C 2 H 4 decomposition rate constant with [Ag+TiO 2 /ACF] as a photoelectrode in a photoelectrocatalytic cell with that achieved with [TiO 2 /ACF]. The factors responsible for the enhancing effect of AgNPs on the PEC activity of the [Ag+TiO 2 /ACF] photoelectrode are discussed.
