Solar energy driving CO 2 reduction is a potential strategy that not only mitigates the greenhouse effect caused by high CO 2 level in atmosphere, but also yields carbon chemicals/fuels at the same time. Herein, a facile way to design the heterogeneous TiO 2 @In 2 S 3 hollow structures possessing robust light harvesting in both ultraviolet and visible regions is proposed and exhibits a higher generation rate of 25.35 and 1.24 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction to CO and CH 4 , respectively. The excellent photocatalytic catalytic performance comes from i) the confined heterostructured TiO 2 @In 2 S 3 possesses a suitable band structure and a broadband-light absorbing capacity for CO 2 photoreduction, ii) the rich interfaces between nanosized TiO 2 and In 2 S 3 on the shell can significantly reduce the diffusion length of carriers and enhance the utilization efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and iii) enriched surface oxygen vacancies can provide more active sites for CO 2 adsorption.

Photocatalytic production of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is an ideal pathway for obtaining solar fuels. Herein, an S-scheme heterojunction is constructed in hybrid TiO 2 /In 2 S 3 photocatalyst, which greatly promotes the separation of photogenerated carriers to foster efficient H 2 O 2 evolution. These composite photocatalysts show a high H 2 O 2 yield of 376 µmol/(L·h). The mechanism of charge transfer and separation within the S-scheme heterojunction is well studied by computational methods and experiments. Density functional theory and in-situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results reveal distinct features of the S-scheme heterojunction in the TiO 2 /In 2 S 3 hybrids and demonstrate charge transfer mechanisms. The density functional theory calculation and electron paramagnetic resonance results suggest that O 2 reduction to H 2 O 2 follows stepwise one-electron processes. In 2 S 3 shows a much stronger interaction with O 2 than TiO 2 as well as a higher reduction ability, serving as the active sites for H 2 O 2 generation. The work provides a novel design of S-scheme photocatalyst with high H 2 O 2 evolution efficiency and mechanistically demonstrates the improved separation of charge carriers.

In this work, a TiO2/In2S3heterojunction film was successfully synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal method and applied in the photocathodic protection (PCP) of 304SS. The octahedral In2S3and In2S3@TiO2nanoparticles combined and coexisted with each other, with In2S3quantum dots growing on the surface of TiO2to form In2S3@TiO2with a wrapping structure. The composite photoelectrode, which includes TiO2with a mixed crystalline phase and In2S3, exhibited significantly enhanced PCP performance for 304SS compared with pure In2S3and TiO2. The In2S3@TiO2/In2S3composites with 0.3 g of P25 titanium dioxide (P25) showed the best protection performance, resulting in a cathodic shift of its OCP coupled with 304SS to −0.664 VAgCl. The electron transfer tracking results demonstrate that In2S3@TiO2/In2S3forms a Z-scheme heterojunction structure. The enhanced PCP performance could be attributed to the synergistic effect of the mixed crystalline phase and the Z-scheme heterojunction system. The mixed crystalline phase of TiO2provides more electrons, and these electrons are gathered at higher energy potentials in the Z-scheme system. Additionally, the built-in electric field further promotes the more effective electrons transfer from photoelectrode to the protected metals, thus, leading to enhanced photoelectrochemical cathodic protection of 304SS.

Due to the excellent stability of titanium dioxide (TiO2), there is still value in improving its solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency through tremendous attempts. Metal sulfides with a narrow bandgap are good candidates to broaden the ultraviolet light absorption of TiO2 into the visible light region. However, sulfides suffer from the photocorrosion issue, leading to poor stability. Herein, a type-II heterojunction of TiO2/In2S3 is fabricated by a hydrothermal method, and a NiFe Prussian blue analog (NFP) overlayer is deposited on the surface of TiO2/In2S3 through a chemical bath deposition technique. Under AM1.5G illumination, a photocurrent density of 1.81 mA cm-2 can be obtained with NFP coated TiO2/In2S3 at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, which is six folds of the photocurrent of TiO2. This photocurrent value can reach up to about 90% of its theoretical photocurrent. During a 12 h stability test, the TiO2/In2S3/NFP photoanode exhibits a high photocurrent retention of 95.17% after an initial transient decrease. The type-II heterojunction of TiO2/In2S3 can efficiently boost the charge separation because of the built-in electric field and enhance the visible-light absorption because of the narrow bandgap of In2S3. A NFP overlayer serves as the cocatalyst for water oxidation reaction due to its valence changes of nickel and iron elements. NFP cocatalyst can rapidly extract the photogenerated holes from In2S3 and then improve the charge separation/injection efficiencies. Thanks to chemical stability of NFP, its coating can also make In2S3 resistant to photocorrosion by physically separating the photoanode from the electrolyte. Therefore, there is a good synergistic effect between the TiO2/In2S3 heterojunction and NFP cocatalyst. This work provides some crucial insights for the interface engineering and material design in photoelectrochemical systems.

The growing global concern over water pollution has amplified the demand for advanced, sustainable water treatment technologies. Photocatalysis offers a promising solution for effectively removing toxic organic contaminants, such as Rhodamine B (RhB), without generating secondary pollutants. However, despite the widespread use of TiO 2 -In 2 S 3 heterojunctions as photocatalysts to overcome the limitations of TiO 2 , the mechanisms behind their enhanced performance still need to be explored. In this study, a TiO 2 -In 2 S 3 photocatalyst with a heterojunction was constructed, and its enhanced photocatalytic performance was demonstrated by 90.6% degradation of RhB within 30 min, with a degradation rate constant 6.01 times that of pure TiO 2 and 4.89 times that of In 2 S 3 . Mechanistic investigations, including density functional theory calculations, revealed that hydroxyl radicals were the primary active species in the degradation process. Moreover, the TiO 2 -In 2 S 3 heterojunction enhanced the adsorption and stabilization of reaction intermediates, optimizing both reaction kinetics and selectivity. These findings highlight the potential of TiO 2 -In 2 S 3 heterojunctions as highly efficient photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

In 2 S 3 forms a Z-scheme heterojunction with TiO 2 , broadening the light response range, improving ROS generation. • Photothermal-photodynamic synergy reduces the required photothermal temperature. • The TiO 2 / In 2 S 3 /Chitosan composite coating exhibits enhanced antibacterial activity. • The composite coating exhibits excellent biocompatibility. Implant-associated bacterial infections remain a major challenge in orthopedic and dental applications, often compromising implant integration and longevity. For this reason, the synergistic antibacterial strategy of photothermal and photocatalysis has become one of the important methods in the field of antibacterial. To synthesize high-efficiency near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive catalysts, a titanium oxide/indium sulfide (TiO 2 /In 2 S 3 ) heterojunction antibacterial coating was prepared on the titanium-based surface using anodic oxidation and wet chemical deposition methods. Compared with titanium alloy, the TiO 2 /In 2 S 3 heterojunction showed a suitable energy band structure, improved light absorption, and enhanced carrier separation capability, thus enhancing photothermal catalytic activity and promoting the production of bacterial reactive oxygen species under NIR light. Indeed, the TiO 2 /In 2 S 3 heterojunction narrowed the bandgap (~2.5 eV) and efficiently generated reactive oxygen species (•O₂⁻ and •OH) under NIR irradiation. Furthermore, the successful deposition of chitosan (CS) endowed the TiO 2 /In 2 S 3 heterojunction with osteogenic activity, promoting the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts. In vitro , results demonstrated effective antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli and S taphylococcus. aureus , inhibited biofilm formation, and supported collagen secretion and mineralization. In vivo , NIR irradiation raised the implant site temperature to below 50 °C, enabling safe and efficient sterilization, and showing no organ toxicity. These results highlight CS-coated TiO 2 /In 2 S 3 heterojunction as a promising multifunctional coating that combines infection control with osteogenic support, providing a potential strategy for improving the safety and longevity of titanium-based implants.
