Clean, low-cost, and efficient nano-TiO2 composite photocatalyst: Preparation and performance in TiOSO4 hydrolysis system

Han Zhang,Xuan Wang,Hao Ding

Herein, SiO 2 -TiO 2 composite (STC) photocatalysts were prepared through placing SiO 2 microspheres in TiOSO 4 solution and calcining at high temperature. Using STC (containing only 5.09 wt% TiO 2 ), the degradation rate to MO with a concentration of 10 ppm was 100% at 50 min of UV illumination. The cost of the photocatalyst and the cleanliness of the preparation process were ensured due to the use of TiOSO 4 as the titanium source and the water as the solvent. Therefore, not only the photocatalytic effect and application performance of TiO 2 were improved, but realized the cleanliness of the preparation process and reduced the cost.

In situ construction of sulfated TiO2 nanoparticles with TiOSO4 for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production

Xueqing Shao,Feng Xiao,Xueying Zhao,Zhiyan Hou,Fan Yue,Lu Wang,Ronglan Wu,Jide Wang,Xintai Su,Chao Yang

Photocatalytic hydrogen production from water is a promising method to obtain clean energy in the future. In this work, the sulfated TiO2 photocatalyst is successfully constructed in situ via a soft-templated method for photocatalytic water splitting to produce hydrogen. The content of sulfate species in TiO2 can be tuned by changing the amount of the surfactant. The photocatalyst with the appropriate content of sulfate ions exhibits an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 3.9% at 365 nm and a high hydrogen production rate of 24.32 mmol h−1 g−1, which is 1.65 times that of commercial TiO2 (P25). The optimized photocatalyst has excellent photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution benefitting from the presence of sulfate ions on the surface of TiO2, large surface area and oxygen vacancies, which facilitates the rapid migration of photo-generated electrons to its surface and the improvement of the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers. This work may inspire the rational design and the development of high-efficiency photocatalysts.

Construction of anodic electron transfer chain based on CuCl2/TiOSO4 synergetic mediators for highly efficient conversion of biomass wastes into electricity at low temperature

Chenxing She,Xihong Zu,Zhiheng Yang,Liheng Chen,Zixin Xie,Hao Yang,Dongjie Yang,Guobin Yi,Yanlin Qin,Xuliang Lin,Wenli Zhang,Huafeng Dong,Xueqing Qiu

Biomass flow fuel cells (BFFCs) are promising alternatives for large-scale conversion of biomass into electricity at low temperature. However, most of them are based on single redox-active materials in anolyte which have limited capacity density and electron transfer rate, resulting in many natural biomass residues can’t generate electricity rapidly and efficiently. Herein, we develop a new anodic electron transfer chain based on CuCl 2 /TiOSO 4 synergetic mediators for BFFCs. The density functional theory (DFT) simulation and experiment results show that TiO 2+ /Ti 3+ redox couple works as an intermediate medium to construct a CuCl 2 /TiOSO 4 synergetic electron transfer chain, which strengthens the electron transfer rate between anolyte and graphite felt (GF) electrode. The CuCl 2 /TiOSO 4 synergetic mediators can efficiently and rapidly degrade glucose, industrial lignin and other natural biomasses at low temperature, and extract electrons simultaneously for generating electricity. The maximum power density (P max ) of CuCl 2 /TiOSO 4 -based BFFC is 146.7 mw·cm −2 when the anolyte is pre-reacted at 90 ℃ for 1 h with glucose as fuel and paired with VO 2 + /VO 2+ catholyte. And the fuel cell can discharge electricity continuously and stably for more than 6 h at 400 mA·cm −2 . Furthermore, it can stably power LED pattern with 92 bulbs. Besides, when the CuCl 2 /TiOSO 4 -based BFFC utilizes sodium lignosulfonate as fuel, its P max is 55.1 mW·cm −2 , and the BFFC can discharge electricity stably for more than 1 h at high output current density of 1.3 A·cm −2 . This work provides a promising approach for application in direct biomass wastes power generation.

Preparation of Calcined kaolinite/TiO2 composites by titanyl sulfate (TiOSO4) hydrolysis precipitation

Minghao Lin,Gangan Wang,Junqi Li,Chaoyi Chen,Yuanpei Lan

Calcined kaolinite (CK)/TiO 2 composites were synthesized through hydrolysis precipitation of titanyl sulfate (TiOSO 4 ) and calcination. Under optimized hydrolysis conditions (pH 2.5, duration 2.0 h, temperature 90 °C, and mass ratio (TiO 2 /CK) = 1.0), a precipitation efficiency of 81.4 % was achieved. The phase composition remained consistent under varying hydrolysis conditions after significant TiO 2 formation. Furthermore, the oil absorption (mass ratio = 2.0) and hiding power (mass ratio = 1.4) of the composites were determined to be 38.8 g/100 g and 88.4 %, respectively. The composites exhibited high good chemical stability as a pigment, maintaining resistance to strong acid erosion, with only 4.0 % dissolution observed after a 15-day immersion in a pH 2.0 solution. H 2 TiO 3 underwent the dehydration and desulfurization more rapidly in an oxygen-rich environment, and anatase formation was well-developed at a calcination temperature of 750 °C for 1 h. Further analysis revealed that phase transition process of TiO 2 was influenced by TiO 2 content, disordered structure of CK and calcination conditions. TiO 2 particles formed single- or multi-layered chemical coatings on the active CK surface, although the presence of exposed mullite impeded coating formation. This study successfully developed cost-effective CK/TiO 2 composites with favorable pigment properties, providing a certain reference for CK selection. The composites have potential applications in coatings, pigments and related fields.

In-situ Ti3+/S doped high thermostable anatase TiO2 nanorods as efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysts

Meng Li,Zipeng Xing,Jiaojiao Jiang,Zhenzi Li,Junyan Kuang,Junwei Yin,Ning Wan,Qi Zhu,Wei Zhou

In-situ Ti 3+ /S doped high thermostable anatase TiO 2 nanorods using ethanediamine-modified TiOSO 4 as precursor are synthesized under 700 °C calcination , then combined with controllable in-situ solid-phase reaction method, calcined at 350 °C in argon. The outcomes declare that the obtained photocatalyst with a high crystallinity is effectively doped with S element and Ti 3+ species, and synchronously possesses one-dimensional (1D) anatase nanorods structure with length of ∼ 2–5 μm and width of ∼0.5–1 μm. The S and Ti 3+ co-doped 1D nanorod with a narrowed bandgap (2.56 eV) stretches the optical response range to visible-light. The visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation efficiency of methyl orange and H 2 production rate for Ti 3+ /S-TiO 2 nanorods are as high as 96% and 166 μmol h −1  g −1 , showing about 6 times greater than 600-TR (TiO 2 nanorods). This is be ascribed to the synergistic reaction of S and Ti 3+ species co-doping narrows the bandgap and promotes the separation efficiency of photoexcited carriers, and the one-dimensional structure favors the transportation of photogenerated charge carriers. Hence, the prepared photocatalyst will have a great latent application prospect in fields of energy and environment.
