Efficient removal of broad-spectrum organic pollutants is crucial in wastewater treatment. This research focuses on the synthesis of three-dimensional TiVCTX MXene/graphene nanosheet-based aerogels, known as TiVCTX/GAs, using a straightforward hydrothermal self-assembly method, followed by freeze-drying. The integration of bimetallic MXene and graphene aerogel in TiVCTX/GAs results in an impressive broad-spectrum removal capability for multiple organic contaminants from wastewater. TiVCTX/GAs exhibit effective adsorption of various dyes and drugs, with adsorption capacities reaching 319.67, 303.45, 229.97, 217.87, and 283.38 mg·g–1 for methylene blue, rhodamine B, Congo red, methyl orange, and tetracycline hydrochloride, respectively. To fully comprehend the adsorption mechanism of TiVCTX/GAs, various models for the adsorption process were examined including kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic models. The adsorption process aligns with the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The intraparticle diffusion model suggests that intraparticle diffusion is not the only rate-controlling step. Moreover, thermodynamic analysis indicates that the adsorption process by TiVCTX/GAs is spontaneous. These aerogels also effectively remove common oils and organic solvents from wastewater through absorption treatment with a substantial absorption capacity ranging from 40 to 90 g·g–1. Particularly, for high-viscosity oils that are challenging to absorb, TiVCTX/GAs demonstrate remarkable absorption ability by reducing their viscosity through photothermal heating. Overall, TiVCTX/GAs show great promise as versatile adsorbents and absorbers for efficiently and comprehensively removing various organic contaminants from wastewater.

This work focuses on the application potential of novel MXene materials in the field of uranium-containing wastewater adsorption, particularly addressing gaps in existing research. Ultra-thin layered TiVCTx was selected as the core adsorbent to thoroughly investigate its adsorption performance of uranium(U(VI))-containing wastewater. By compounding with sodium alginate, we successfully prepared easily recoverable aerogel beads and evaluated their adsorption capacity for ultra-low concentrations of U(VI) in seawater. The findings of this study reveal that TiVCTx exhibits optimal adsorption capacity for U(VI) in a weakly acidic environment with a pH of 5.59, and its maximum adsorption capacity for U(VI) reaches up to 336 mg g−1, demonstrating superior performance when it comes to other MXene materials. Further research reveals that the adsorption mechanism involves the synergistic effect of electrostatic adsorption and reduction adsorption, exhibiting monolayer adsorption characteristics, and the adsorption process is a spontaneous endothermic reaction. Notably, in simulated complex seawater environments, even when the U(VI) concentration is as low as, for instance, 3.3 μg L−1, 50 mg of aerogel beads can still achieve an adsorption capacity of 3.89 mg g−1 for 60 L of seawater. These findings underscore the outstanding performance of TiVCTx as a novel MXene material in U(VI) adsorption and its broad potential for practical applications.

MXenes are widely recognized as excellent dye adsorption materials. However, their propensity to oxidize will greatly reduce their stability and performance. In the present work, a simple antioxidation treatment was applied to TiVCTx using three acid antioxidants (oxalic acid (OA), sodium citrate (SC), and tartaric acid (TA)) and their effects on the stability and methylene blue adsorption performance were investigated. The stability of TiVCTx stored in an aqueous solution within 14 days was assessed using XRD and XPS. The antioxidant-treated TiVCTx showed a significant improvement in both long-term stability and MB adsorption properties, with TA-TiVCTx demonstrating the best performance. The MB adsorption of the as-prepared TiVCTx was physical and multilayer, but it became a multilayer process where physical and chemical adsorptions coexist after antioxidation treatment. The maximum adsorption capacity of TA-TiVCTx reached 8061.03 mg g−1 and remained at 3887.28 mg g−1 after 14 days of storage, far exceeding the performance of other reported adsorbents. It is found that the enhanced stability is attributed to the dense protective layer formed by the chelation between the antioxidant and TiVCTx, and the improved MB adsorption performance is ascribed to the synergistic effect of electrostatic adsorption between TiVCTx and MB and the Bloch reaction between the antioxidants and the MB molecules. The differences in the enhancement effects of the various antioxidants are related to the number of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in the antioxidant molecules. This work provides useful reference and guidance for obtaining MXenes with better stability and adsorption performance.

Magnesium-based battery system has emerged as the potential candidate to beyond Li-ion battery system due to the numerous advantageous of magnesium anode, such as natural abundance, high capacity and dendrites free. However, the selection of cathode materials and the intercalation of magnesium-ions in the cathode host material remains a challenge due to the strong interaction of highly polar divalent magnesium ions with the cathode material, making the diffusion of magnesium ions relatively difficult. Herein, the flexible TiVCT x MXene film was developed via a facile and economical approach. As the cathode host material for magnesium-ion storage, the freestanding TiVCT x MXene film displays a high specific capacity of 111 and 135 mAh g −1 at a current density of 0.05 A g −1 for magnesium-ion batteries (MIB) and Mg/Li hybrid batteries (MLHB). Furthermore, a long-term cycling stability over 1000 cycles was demonstrated and a detailed investigation of the unique long activation phenomenon of MXene films during cycling. More importantly, the reaction mechanism of magnesium-ion storage was validated, i.e., the MXene interlayer spacing variation with the reversible Mg 2+ diffusion behavior. This work reveals the magnesium storage mechanism of MXene materials and provides a new pathway for high-performance storage of magnesium-ion cathode materials.

MXene-based electrocatalysts for hydrogen production have been extensively studied. Herein, we report an efficient and stable electrocatalyst (TiVCTx/MoS2-CNT) with a 2D/2D/1D structure, which is used for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The catalytic performance can be attributed to the rich inherent anchoring sites of TiVCTx, which contribute to the uniform growth of MoS2 nanosheets and reduce the aggregation of MoS2 nanosheets. In addition, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are connected to form a 3D nanohybrid, which increases the conductivity of TiVCTx/MoS2 and provides a pathway for the electron transfer of TiVCTx/MoS2. As expected, TiVCTx/MoS2-CNT presented impressive hydrogen evolution activity with an overpotential of 180 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and a small Tafel slope of 79 mV/dec. Furthermore, TiVCTx/MoS2-CNT catalysts exhibit an electrochemical durability of up to 17 h in 0.5 M H2SO4. This work may provide a new idea for the construction of a three-dimensional nanohybrid and the development of an advanced bimetallic MXene-based nanohybrid for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).

Magnesium-ion batteries (MIB) have gradually attracted attention owing to their high theoretical capacity, high safety, and low cost. A bimetallic metal–organic framework self-sacrificing template and a co-assembly strategy are used to prepare a high-performance, stable cycling NiSe 2 -CoSe 2 @TiVCT x (NCSe@TiVC) heterostructure MIB cathode that can be used as a flexible integrated unit to power future self-powered systems. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of TiVCT x MXene and NCSe, the NCSe@TiVC heterostructure electrode has a discharge-specific capacity of 136 mAh g −1 at 0.05 A g −1 and high cycling stability of over 500 cycles; the assembled pouch-cell device as flexible integrated unit exhibits good practicability. The magnesium ion storage mechanism is also validated using quantitative kinetic analysis, ex situ XRD, and XPS techniques. Density functional theory analysis indicates the most stable Mg-atom adsorption sites in the heterostructure. This study broadens the possibilities for applying the TiVCT x MXene heterostructure to energy storage materials and future self-powered flexible systems.
