Tiopronin (TPN) protected gold-silver bimetallic nanoclusters (TPN-AuAg NCs) were synthesized in an aqueous medium by a one-pot method. The synthesized TPN-AuAg NCs are spherical with an average diameter of 1.75 ± 0.5 nm and can emit bright fluorescence in the red spectral range ( E m = 670 nm). Based on the “on-off-on” process of the nanoclusters' fluorescence, a fluorescent probe for sequential detection of Fe 3+ and ascorbic acid (AA) was proposed. After adding Fe 3+ ions into the TPN-AuAg NCs solution, a composite Fe 3+ @TPN-AuAg NCs could be formed. Due to the internal filtering effect (IFE) between Fe 3+ and TPN-AuAg NCs, the fluorescence of the nanoclusters was quenched. Subsequently, when AA was continuously added to the fluorescence quenching system, based on the reduction effect of AA on Fe 3+ in the complex, the fluorescence of Fe 3+ @TPN-AuAg NCs could be sensitively turned on. The detection limits of the fluorescence titration measurements calculated using the equation 3σ/k, were 150 nM (Fe 3+ ) and 60 nM (AA), respectively. The proposed method has been successfully applied to detect Fe 3+ and AA in human serum samples.

In this work, an environmental-friendly surfactant named tiopronin was tested as a novel copper depressant in copper-molybdenum sulfide separation for the first time. The separation performances were evaluated by micro-flotation and the depression mechanism was revealed by means of Zeta potential , Scanning Electron Microscope and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) measurements. The micro-flotation tests demonstrated that tiopronin exhibited powerful depressing effect on chalcopyrite and it could achieve satisfactory separation results with high selectivity in wide pH range. The novel depressant had promising application prospect due to its high selectivity and low toxicity in compared with conventional one. Zeta potential, SEM-EDS, XPS and ToF-SIMS measurements manifested that tiopronin was chemisorbed on chalcopyrite surface through the strong chemical reaction of copper sites with C O and SH groups in tiopronin molecular to form five-membered chelating rings. In addition, a possible depression model was proposed.

In this study, new facile, economical and fluorescent ultrathin films (UTFs) for detection of tiopronin are developed. The UTFs have been fabricated by combining the alizarin red S–boric acid adduct (ARS–H3BO3) with MgAl layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles through the layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly technique. UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, XRD, SEM and AFM have been adopted to monitor the assembly process. The UTFs display a uniform morphology and a periodic layered structure. Using ARS as a probe, which does not emit fluorescence by itself but displays fluorescence when complexed with boron, the assembled ARS–H3BO3/LDH UTFs display a high luminescence response to tiopronin. In the presence of Cu2+, the fluorescence of UTFs was quenched, which is attributed to the complexation between Cu2+ and ARS. Upon adding tiopronin to the UTF–Cu system, tiopronin would form a complex with Cu2+ preferentially, leading to the increased fluorescence of UTFs. Based on the above mechanism, a turn-on fluorescent ensemble for tiopronin is developed. A linear response was obtained in the range of 0–80 ng mL−1, with a detection limit of 0.47 ng mL−1. Compared with ARS and other analytes, the tighter binding of tiopronin to Cu2+ led to an assay with high specificity. Therefore, this work provides a facile LBL strategy for the fabrication of a solid state sensor based on ARS dye for detection of tiopronin.

Multifunctional carbon dots have drawn considerable attention due to their potential biomedical application value. We report the preparation of blue-green fluorescence-emitting, multifunctional, nitrogen-and-sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs) synthesized via a one-step process using
1-thioglycerol as a sulfur source, glucose and citric acid as carbon sources, and polyethyleneimine as a nitrogen source. Because of abundant amino and sulfur content, the CDs exhibited high sensibility and selectivity for detecting Cu2+ (detection limit: 0.01 μM, linear range:
0.025 to 50 μM). Fast and sensitive detection of tiopronin was also achieved on the basis of the fluorescence “off-on” mode considering the strong affinity between tiopronin and Cu2+. The N, S-CDs exhibited good biocompatibility as determined by fluorescence imaging
using onion epidermal cells and gram-positive bacteria. The CDs also exhibited excellent antimicrobial ability against the gram-positive bacteria. Our results indicate that these novel N, S-CDs could be ideal candidates for several biochemical applications such as antibacterial treatment and
detection of small biomolecules.

A fluorescent probe ( N -(4-methyl-2-oxo-2 H -chromen-7-yl)-2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonamide) for selective detection of tiopronin was synthesized and characterized. The probe displays weak fluorescence attributed to electron transfer from the fluorophore to the electron-withdrawing 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyl group. However, upon effective cleavage of the electron-withdrawing 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyl moiety by tiopronin from the weakly fluorescent probe, the fluorescence intensity is significantly enhanced. Under optimal conditions, the fluorescence intensity exhibited a linear correlation with tiopronin concentration within the range of 30 nM to 50 μM. The proposed strategy is characterized by its simplicity, specificity, and sensitivity. The proposed probe was employed for the determination of tiopronin in urine samples and commercial tablets, demonstrating potential applications in disease diagnosis.

In recent years, fluorescent sensors based on carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been widely reported for pharmaceutical detection owing to their numerous advantages. In this study, a Fe³⁺-mediated fluorescence “off–on” sensor based on nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) was developed for the selective detection of tiopronin (TPN). Briefly, highly fluorescent N-CQDs were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method using citric acid monohydrate and diethylenetriamine. XPS, FT-IR, UV-Vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, and DLS confirmed that the N-CQDs exhibit uniform size, aqueous stability, excitation-independent fluorescence, and a high quantum yield of 62.99%. Fe³⁺ selectively bound to N-CQDs to form a complex, resulting in fluorescence quenching. Subsequently, upon the addition of TPN, the fluorescence of N-CQDs showed a proportional recovery. During this process, the competitive coordination between TPN and Fe³⁺ led to the release of Fe³⁺ from the N-CQDs, thereby restoring the quenched fluorescence. The limit of detection (LOD) of TPN was 80 μmol/L, with a linear range of 0.2–0.7 mmol/L and an R² value of 0.9993. The content of TPN in enteric-coated tablets was quantified using this method, yielding recovery rates ranging from 92.59% to 104.22%. This method is simple, rapid, and reliable, offering good sensitivity without the need for expensive reagents or complex equipment. This study usedRosa roxburghiiTratt. crude extract (RR) as a reducing, stabilizing, and modifying agent for the green synthesis of gold nanoparticles (RR-AuNPs) via the one-pot method for the first time and established a novel colorimetric sensor for detecting tiopronin. Initially, RR-AuNPs with a uniform particle size and stable dispersion were prepared using the reducing property of RR. Upon the introduction of tiopronin, the drug binds to the surface of RR-AuNPs through Au-S bonds and hydrogen bonds, inducing a significant aggregation of RR-AuNPs. The absorbance of the RR-AuNP solution exhibited a linear relationship with the tiopronin concentration in the range of 0.17 μM to 16.67 μM (y = 1.9157 − 0.0972x), with a detection limit of 0.19 μM. The colorimetric sensor was successfully applied to detect tiopronin in urine samples. Compared with other detection methods, this approach is simple to operate and has a high sensitivity, a wide linear range, and a low detection limit.

Tiopronin is a widely used drug for treatment of cystinuria, rheumatoid arthritis and hepatic disorders. It is also an antidote to heavy metal poisoning and a radioprotective agent. A method is described for rapid and sensitive determination of tiopronin using DNA-stabilized silver nanoclusters (DNA–AgNCs) as a fluorescent probe. Tiopronin can selectively bind to DNA–AgNCs to form a stable Ag-S bond upon which the red photoluminescence (best measured at excitation/emission wavelengths of 590/640 nm) is quenched. The finding is used to design an assay that has a linear response in the 1–150 nM tiopronin concentration range and a 270 pM limit of detection. Compared with previously reported methods, the present approach is more rapid, highly sensitive and selective. It has been successfully applied in the detection of tiopronin in spiked urine and serum, and in pharmaceutical products (tablets and injections).
An ultrasensitive and reliable method for tiopronin assay is developed using red-emissive silver nanoclusters as a fluorescent probe. It has been successfully applied in the determination of tiopronin in biological fluids and pharmaceutical products.

Two rapid and sensitive analytical methods are developed for the determination of D-penicillamine (D-PEN) and tiopronin (TP) through high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD) and capillary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence detection (CE-LIF). A boron-dipyrrolemethene (BODIPY) fluorescence labeling reagent, 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-bromomethyl-difluoroboradiaza-s-indacene (TMMB-Br) was successfully applied to derivatize these two thiol drugs. Fluorescein was used as the internal standard (IS) for the quantification of D-PEN and TP in CE-LIF. The derivatization and separation conditions were optimized carefully. Under the optimum conditions, the HPLC and CE separation of D-PEN and TP could be achieved within 12 min. The limits of detection were as low as 2.0 nmol/L for HPLC-FLD and 0.47 nmol/L for CE-LIF. The drugs in human urine and serum samples were determined successfully, and the recoveries were 95.0–06.7% and 95.2–104.3%, respectively.
