Rapid Determination of Uric Acid in Human Urine by CE with an Improved Electromagnetic Induction Detector

Yang Xiujuan,Liu Cui,Chen Zuanguang

A novel and rapid method was developed for the determination of uric acid in human urine by capillary electrophoresis with an improved electromagnetic induction detector. Electrophoretic parameters affecting the separation efficiency, such as buffer composition, buffer pH, buffer concentration, and electroosmotic flow modifier, were systematically investigated. An electrolyte solution consisting of 8.5 mmol L −1 tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (Tris), 1.5 mmol L −1 citric acid, and 0.2 mmol L −1 cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, pH 8.0, was found to be suitable for sample determination. Uric acid was separated and detected within 2.3 min, with a linear response range from 5 to 400 µg mL −1 and a correlation coefficient of 0.9998. Intraday and interday precision were 1.6 and 2.5 % ( n  = 6), respectively. The recoveries were between 98.3 and 100.5 %. This simple, effective, and stable method is a good alternative to existing methods for uric acid determination. Also, the improved electromagnetic induction detector holds great promise in clinical analysis.

Semiquinone Radical-Engineered Nanoparticles for Hypoxia-Adaptive and InflammationControlled Microwave-Immunotherapy of Liver Tumor

Meizhen Zhou,Jing Zhu,Dongyun Zhang,Jianping Dou,Wenqi Chen,Yi Zhang,Xiaopeng Gao,Jixi Zhang,Ping Liang,Jie Yu

Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) exhibit a paradoxical dual role in tumor therapy. Tumor hypoxia restricts therapeutic ROS generation, while excessive secondary ROS post-ablation suppresses T-cell function yet promotes M1 macrophage polarization. Semiquinone radical-doped reduced polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA red ) loaded is developed with resiquimod (R848) (PDA red @R848) via π–π stacking. Reduction enriches the nanoparticles with semiquinone radicals, enhancing dielectric properties and dipole polarization under electromagnetic effects. This nanoparticle enables the specific hydrogen radicals (H•)/ROS generation in oxygen-heterogeneous tumor under microwave irradiation. In microwave dynamics therapy (MDT) phase, PDA red converts protons (H⁺) to H• under microwave irradiation in hypoxic regions, targeting cytochrome c and inducing tumor cell apoptosis and immunogenic cell death; PDA red establishes an internal electric field under microwave, facilitating electron–hole separation to produce ROS and trigger ferroptosis in normoxic regions. In post-MDT phase, PDA red ’s intrinsic polyphenols scavenge excess secondary ROS produced by damaged cells, alleviating immunosuppression. Compared with blank control, PDA red @R848 increased CD4⁺/CD8⁺ T-cell infiltration (6.4-fold) and M1 macrophage polarization (2.5-fold M1/M2 ratio elevation). Pro-inflammatory cytokines are significantly reduced, and tumor volume is suppressed by 94.8%. This study proposes an innovative dual-action mechanism coordinating oxygen-adapted radical generation with secondary ROS clearance to reprogram redox/immune homeostasis for effective liver tumor eradication.

Programmable Hairpin Argonaute–Nanopore Detection System for Multiplex Mycotoxin Analysis

Zhuoqun Su,Ziye Pei,Jianing Chen,Wenya Song,Di Wu,Ying Wang,Guoliang Li

Food samples are often simultaneously contaminated with multiple small-molecule hazardous substances. However, conventional sensing methods typically detect only a single contaminant due to the lack of accurate and multiplexed signal conversion and output mechanisms. In this work, we propose a versatile sensing platform, “programmable hairpin argonaute–nanopore detection” (PHAND), which integrates Thermus thermophilus Argonaute (TtAgo)-mediated cleavage and a modular library of DNA hairpin probes to enable multiplex and portable detection of analytes. In the presence of specific targets, guide DNAs are released to activate TtAgo proteins, which cleave the corresponding hairpin probes and generate distinct nanopore reporters. These reporters produce orthogonal, characteristic current blockade signals when blocking α-hemolysin nanopores. Using the PHAND system, we successfully achieved the simultaneous detection of three major mycotoxins─aflatoxin B1, ochratoxin A, and zearalenone with high sensitivity and specificity. Validation in spiked real samples demonstrated satisfactory recovery and confirmed the practical applicability of our method. The PHAND system developed here supports portable and multiplexed detection of small-molecule hazardous substances, offering potential for rapid food safety screening.

An All-Weather Fabric Evaporator with Photonic-Electric-Thermal Conversion for Scalable and Efficient Solar Desalination

Pengshu Xie,Chuanliang Chen,Ke Tian,Minhan Cheng,Qianyang Li,Hua Deng

The development of efficient and sustainable solar-driven water evaporation systems is crucial for mitigating global water scarcity. However, the intermittent nature of solar radiation presents a major challenge for achieving continuous steam generation under all conditions. Most current fabrication methods for solar evaporators lack scalability, flexibility, and environmental compatibility. Herein, we present a scalable-fabricated solar evaporator with a gradient-heating design, constructed from PET/CNT/PDA/CNC@CuS composites for continuous steam generation. This device synergistically utilizes solar illumination and electrical heating, enabled by the strong broadband light absorption and excellent electrical conductivity imparted by a two-step spray-coating of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and CuS-decorated cellulose nanocrystals (CNC@CuS). Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) are used to uniformly load commercial CuS powder onto CNT/PDA-coated PET fabric via electrostatic and hydrogen-bond interactions. Synergistic effect combining 1-sun illumination and 5 V input elevates the evaporation rate to 5.49 kg m–2 h–1, with temperature surpassing individual modes by 6.8 °C (light-only) and 4.2 °C (electricity-only). The evaporator demonstrates remarkable salt tolerance, maintaining 5.3 kg m–2 h–1 in 3.5 wt % NaCl (1-sun and 5 V) and 2.3 kg m–2 h–1 (only 5 V), with no performance decline over 7 days. Furthermore, the CNC@CuS coatings also impart intrinsic antibacterial and UV-shielding properties. This study provides a promising approach for environmentally friendly, efficient, and all-weather seawater desalination.

Electrospun MOF-808/X Composite Membranes for Efficient Catalytic Hydrolysis of Nerve Agent Simulant

Yuzhi Li,Bingxin Lu,Jinyu Wang,Yufa Zhao,Kaibo Wang

The Zr-based metal–organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) exhibit remarkable catalytic efficacy in the detoxification of nerve agents and their simulants. However, their practical military applications remain limited due to the poor processability inherent to their powder morphology. In this study, we fabricated a flexible hierarchical FeCoOx@PAN@MOF-808-IMDC composite fiber membrane with synergistic catalytic effects through a two-step fabrication strategy: (1) in situ growth of MOF-808 on electrospun FeCoOx@PAN fibers, followed by (2) postsynthetic modification with 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid (IMDC) ligands. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that IMDC grafting reduces both the adsorption energy of DMNP on Zr clusters and the activation barrier for bond cleavage, leading to significantly accelerated reaction rates. Consequently, the optimized FeCoOx@PAN@MOF-808-IMDC exhibits exceptional DMNP hydrolysis performance, achieving complete conversion within 1 min and an ultrafast half-life of 6 s, along with high durability. This work effectively addresses the application limitations of powdered Zr-MOFs in protective systems and provides a viable pathway for integrating MOF materials into protective equipment for nerve agent detoxification.

Dual-Interface Symmetrical-Structure Solar Evaporators with Overturning Controllable Salt for High-Efficiency Desalination

Jiugang Li,Haoran Qiao,Wenqi Zhang,Zhiqiang Wang,Ruiyan Wu,Yi Hu,Kerun Hua,Wenbin Li,Jiahao He,Jiuyi Li

Solar interfacial evaporation holds significant promise for sustainable desalination, but its long-term performance and practical deployment are often hindered by salt accumulation and maintenance requirements. To overcome these limitations, a cotton fabric MoS 2 composite is synthesized by applying a MoS 2 /dopamine mixture dissolved in water–alcohol solution onto cotton fabrics. This composite is engineered into a dual-interface symmetrical-structure solar fabric evaporator (DS-SFE) with self-cleaning and salt-removal capabilities, enabling efficient evaporation of high-salinity brine. DS-SFE achieves 95.5% solar absorption and 40.0 kg m −2 water supply flux. Under 1 sun illumination, the evaporation rate in deionized water reaches 2.25 kg m −2 h −1 . Even in a 15 wt% NaCl solution, stable and excellent evaporation performance (1.75 kg m −2 h −1 ) can still be maintained. The flip-design establishes easy operation in extreme salinity (20 wt% NaCl), requiring only manual rotation every 8 h to clear accumulated salt and ensure continuous operation. This work advances eco-friendly solar evaporator design, demonstrating scalable potential for sustainable water purification.

An Integrated Pre-Amplified DNA Logic Gate Platform with Cascaded Amplification for Catalytic Fluorogenic Sensing of Prostate Cancer miRNAs

Zhihui Zeng,Zihan Yan,Hao Jiang,Anyi Li,Junyuan Yang,Xuefei Lv

Prostate cancer is one of the most common malignancies worldwide and a leading cause of cancer-related death in men. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as promising and highly specific biomarkers for its detection. However, conventional miRNA-based biosensors face challenges of limited specificity, high false positives in single-target assays, and inadequate sensitivity. Here we developed an integrated pre-amplified DNA logic gate platform with cascaded signal amplification (IPL-CAFS-PCmi) for catalytic fluorogenic sensing of prostate cancer miRNAs. The system uses an AND-gate architecture, combining rolling circle amplification (RCA) for pre amplification, hybridization chain reaction (HCR) for signal enhancement and HCR-assembled multi-component nucleic acid enzymes (MNAzymes) for final cleavage-based amplification. The platform achieved detection limits of 2.21 fM for miR-141 and 2.66 fM for miR-375, with excellent specificity in discriminating single-base mismatches. In diluted human serum, recovery rates ranged from 98.51% to 99.16%, demonstrating strong robustness. By integrating RCA with HCR-mediated MNAzyme assembly in a programmable DNA logic framework, this design provides multi-level cascade amplification at room temperature, significantly improving both sensitivity and specificity. The platform thus represents a versatile tool with strong potential for precision oncology, clinical diagnostics, and point-of-care testing.

A label-free fluorescence sensor for OTA detection based on enzymatic recycling -mediated precise regulation of DNA-templated silver nanocluster

Yan Yang,Wenxin Mai,Shuojie Wang,Guixiang Teng,Shiyu Wei,Meiling Shi,Yongqiang Tian

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a widespread mycotoxin in food chains, yet conventional aptamer-based assays remain challenging because of the background signals and matrix interference. Here, we introduced a target-triggered reporter synthesis mechanism in which OTA binding unlocks a TdT- Nt.AlwI enzymatic cycle that generates polyT strands exclusively in the presence of the target. These generated polyT products interact specifically with polyA-recognition motifs on DNA-templated silver nanoclusters (DNA-AgNCs), enabling fluorescence transduction for OTA detection. This “zero-to-one” generative logic gate ensures that signal molecules are produced exclusively after recognition, intrinsically suppressing blank background. Moreover, the enzymatic cycle allows a single OTA molecule to trigger the generation of multiple polyT strands, imparting signal amplification without external labels or immobilization. Furthermore, integrating target-initiated nucleic acid synthesis with orthogonal optical transduction enables the construction of a label-free assay that intrinsically decreases background noise from signal generation, thereby ensuring high specificity, low interference, and quantitative reliability for target detection. The assay shows a linear response from 10 pM to 50 nM, achieves a detection limit of 0.097 ng mL −1 , and yields 86.4–94.1 % recoveries with<8.1 % RSD in spiked soybean extracts. By suppressing baseline noise at the mechanism level and separating amplification from readout, this platform enables sensitive, low false-positive OTA quantification and is readily adaptable to other small molecules by exchanging the aptamer, advancing portable food-safety screening.

Investigation of performance and antifouling mechanisms of calcium borate-modified PVDF membranes: Insights from the dual-mechanism fouling model and XDLVO theory

Xinying Zhang,Yuan Liu,Bingbing Zhang,Qiaoying Wang,Yongjing Wang,Yonghao Wang,Guozheng Shen,Zhencheng Hu

Membrane modification and the development of advanced materials represent promising strategies to mitigate membrane fouling and improve separation performance. In this study, a novel calcium borate nanoparticle (CaB NPs) with a tetrahedral structure was employed to modify polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes through a synergistic surface engineering approach. The modified membranes were systematically evaluated in terms of permeability, fouling resistance, and antifouling mechanisms. At the optimal CaB NPs dosage of 15 mg (corresponding to a membrane area of 78.5 cm 2 ), the pure water flux increased by 3.59-fold, and the water contact angle was reduced from 74.9° (pristine) to 39.4°, while the zeta potential decreased from 38.4 mV to 29.8 mV. Additionally, the rejection of protein foulants improved by 20–30 % compared to that of the pristine membrane. The structural rearrangement of CaB NPs under alkaline conditions enhanced surface hydrophilicity and charge properties. Dual-mechanism fouling model analysis revealed that membrane fouling shifted from predominantly irreversible to reversible after modification, enabling effective foulant removal through physical cleaning. Furthermore, extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (XDLVO) theory indicated that the CaB-modified membrane exhibited a markedly higher energy barrier toward bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption. This study offers the mechanistic insights into protein fouling mitigation, and highlights its potential in sustainable wastewater treatment.

Electromagnetically-driven microfluidic platform combining upconversion fluorescence sensing and photothermal sterilization for sensitive detection and in situ elimination of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in seafood

Li Wang,Mengyun Wang,Anhui Lin,Zhuozhen Qian,Yanfang Wu,Zhiyu Liu,Xiaomei Chen

Traditional methods for detecting foodborne pathogens rely on culture techniques, while advanced analytical instruments, though more sophisticated, are unsuitable for rapid detection and cannot eliminate residual contamination from secondary sources. In this study, a novel method integrating near-infrared light-induced upconversion fluorescence sensing with photothermal sterilization was developed for the detection of Vibrio parahaemolyticus ( V. parahaemolyticus ). Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were used as a fluorescence signal carrier, and silica-modified hollow polydopamine (PDA)-loaded Fe 3 O 4 @Au (HS-PDA@Fe 3 O 4 @Au) functioned as a photothermal element. Based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and photothermal effect, an electromagnetic-driven microfluidic fluorescence platform was constructed to achieve sensitive detection and in situ sterilization of V. parahaemolyticus . More importantly, the platform allows programmable control of the shuttling of magnetic materials within the functional compartments of the sensing chip. Under optimal experimental conditions, the detection limit for V. parahaemolyticus was 5 CFU/mL, and the linear range was 8–10 6  CFU/mL. Additionally, the sterilization rate reached 100 % after 8 min of 980 nm near-infrared irradiation, effectively eliminating the residual pathogenic bacteria and preventing secondary pollution. Therefore, the platform developed in this study demonstrates great potential for on-site detection of V. parahaemolyticus in seafood.

Poly-adenine-thymine-mediated gold nanoparticle-based colorimetric and Tyndall effect dual-mode sensing of amoxicillin

Yu Huang,Yuyan Sun,Donghyun Kim,Zhiguo Wu,Ling Pan,Weiguang Yang,Qiongyuan Zhang,Huabin Wang,Jiangling Wu,Hua Zhang

The widespread use of amoxicillin plays an important role to treat numerous bacterial diseases, but has led to the risks and challenges to aquatic environment and human health. Therefore, an accurate, economical and efficient detection and quantification of amoxicillin is essential to trace it in environment. Herein, a colorimetric and Tyndall effect (TE)-based dual-mode sensing platform was developed to detect amoxicillin with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as the signaling labels. AuNPs conjugated with a triblock nucleotide composed of polyadenine (polyA), polythymine (polyT) and aptamer was designed as the probes. The folding of DNA aptamers towards amoxicillin enhanced the stability of AuNPs in salt solution while the AuNPs probes aggregated without target bound. Thus, the colorimetric and TE signals were generated by the aggregation/dispersion of AuNPs probes. Furthermore, the polyA and polyT design could facilitate the detection for amoxicillin by modulating the length of polyA and polyT blocks. The colorimetric mode allowed the screening of amoxicillin in the range of 25–400 nM with the limit of detection of 22.58 nM, and the TE mode supported the same quantitative detection range of amoxicillin but an improved limit of detection as 16.75 nM. Overall, this proposed dual-mode sensing technique not only enables reliable, robust detection and self-confirmation of detection results, but also provides great prospects to be extended for the analysis of other antibiotics.

Effect of coupling between pH and composite synovial fluid components on tribological behavior of PEEK-XLPE hip joint materials

Jiajia Cen,Kai Chen,Qin Chen,Xinyue Zhang,Cunao Feng,Xiaowei Li,Dekun Zhang,Shirong Ge

The tribological performance of hip joint materials in the synovial fluid is substantially influenced by environmental factors. In this study, the tribological properties of polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK)-highly crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) hip joint materials were investigated in composite synovial fluids with varying pH conditions, revealing the coupling mechanism between pH and composite synovial fluid components. The lubrication efficacy of the composite synovial fluid under physiological conditions was validated through a 2 million-cycle hip joint simulation test. Results indicated that the coefficient of friction (COF) decreased with the increasing pH, while the wear factor remained stable at pH = 7.5 and pH = 8.0 but decreased progressively at pH = 8.5. Notably, the Fluid C demonstrated significant pH sensitivity, reducing the wear factor by 89.12 % when pH increased from 8.0 to 8.5. Moreover, the results of the hip joint simulation tests were consistent with the sliding tribology tests. The component concentration regulated the lubrication efficiency, with amplified effects during long-term service. Hence, this study elucidated wear mechanisms in “soft-soft” hip joint materials under simulated physiological conditions and provided critical insights for predicting the lifespan of polymer-based artificial joints.
