The combination of adsorption and photocatalysis offers a synergistic strategy for enhanced U(VI) removal. In this study, g-C 3 N 4 /HAP composites were synthesized via a hydrothermal method to achieve efficient U(VI) removal. Hydroxyapatite (HAP) provides abundant adsorption sites for rapid U(VI) enrichment, while graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) exhibits excellent visible-light response, enabling the photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) to U(IV). The heterojunction formed between HAP and g-C 3 N 4 effectively suppresses electron-hole recombination, facilitating electron transfer and narrowing the band gap. Characterization revealed that the composite achieved a U(VI) removal efficiency of 99.28 % and a maximum adsorption capacity of 4880.95 mg/g, 1.85 times higher than single-component systems. Under solar light, photogenerated electrons in g-C 3 N 4 reduce U(VI) via interaction with dissolved oxygen to form superoxide radicals (· O 2 − ). This synergistic mechanism enhances photocatalytic performance and adsorption efficiency. The material exhibited excellent stability over multiple cycles, demonstrating its practical potential for environmental remediation. This study highlights the g-C 3 N 4 /HAP composite as a promising solar-driven material for efficient U(VI) removal, providing a sustainable and effective solution for uranium-contaminated water treatment.

As an effective treatment method for uranium removal in wastewater, the application of photocatalytic reduction has attracted extensive attention. To improve the optical performance of Nb 2 O 5 , CdS nanoparticles were introduced via a one-step hydrothermal method. Then the characterization by various methods (e.g. XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS and UV–vis DRS) were used to determine the structural and optical properties of the heterojunction of Nb 2 O 5 nanorod/CdS nanoparticles (NC). It clearly confirmed that the successful construction of the heterojunction widened the visible light absorption range, narrowed bandgap (∼2.11 eV), promoted the charge transfer and enhanced the separation efficiency of photoinduced electron-hole pairs and further improved the photoreduction activity. During the photocatalytic degradation process, the results showed the photocatalyst with the Nb/Cd molar ratio of 1/3 (NC-3) displayed the best removal of U(VI), with a removal efficiency of 97% in 90 min adsorption and 150 min visible light irradiation at the pH=6. The NC-3 photocatalyst was relatively stable and exhibited good recyclability in during the cyclic experiments. In the end, it was proposed that e - and O 2 - radicals played important roles in the process of the reduction of U(VI).

Polydopamine-coated phosphate-intercalated Mg Fe layered double hydroxides (PDA/phos-LDH) were fabricated to capture U(VI). Phosphate was intercalated in the layers of LDH because of its strong affinity for U(VI) species and the PDA was employed to provide massive binding sites for U(VI) by promoting the dispersion of LDH in the matrix. Experimental results revealed that the introduction of phosphate and PDA significantly increased the removal amount for U(VI) because of the increased functional groups (including PO 4 3− , -OH, -NH 2 and aromatic ring). The highest removal amount of PDA/phos-LDH (pH = 3.0, T = 298 K) reached 912.0 mg/g within 60 min, which was higher than many other LDH-based adsorption materials. After 5 repeated uses, the uptake percentage was still as high as 81.4 %. In addition, the excellent dynamic adsorption performance further confirmed the potential of PDA/phos-LDH in the actual processing of U(VI)-containing wastewater. Ion exchange, complexation, electrostatic attraction, cation-π interaction and precipitation were confirmed to play prominent roles in U(VI) removal. In a word, PDA/phos-LDH was an exceptional adsorbent for U(VI) immobilization.

The contaminated solvent from the Purex process is washed with alkaline detergents such as sodium carbonate, which generates a large amount of secondary wastes. Therefore, hydrazine carbonate as a salt-free reagent deserves to be studied in depth. In this study, the Ce(IV), U(VI), and Zr(IV) metal ions in organic phases containing dibutyl phosphate (HDBP) of 30% tributyl phosphate (TBP)–dodecane were washed with hydrazine carbonate. The effects of the oscillation time (1 to 15 min); temperature (25°C to 85°C); cumulative number of washes (one to four times); mass fraction of hydrazine carbonate (0.1% to 20%); volume ratio of the aqueous phase to the organic phase (0.2 to 5); HDBP concentration (0 to 0.4 M); HNO3 concentration (0.05 to 8 M); and concentration of Ce(IV), U(VI), and Zr(IV) metal ions on the removal percentages of Ce(IV), U(VI), and Zr(IV) metal ions in polluted solvents were studied. The results showed that when the organic phase containing 0.02 M HDBP was washed three times with 5% hydrazine carbonate at 25°C, the removal percentages of the Ce(IV), U(VI), and Zr(IV) ions were 96%, 98%, and 94%, respectively. Meanwhile, the retention concentrations of the three in the organic phase were 35, 28, and 78 mg/L, respectively. The increase of the mass fraction of hydrazine carbonate enhances the removal of the metal ions from the organic phase into the aqueous phase. High acid is not conducive to alkaline washing of metal ions. The increase of HDBP concentration not only promotes extraction but also increases the retention capacity of the organic phase and has the most significant effect on Zr(IV). U(VI) promotes the preferential washing of Zr(IV) while Ce(IV) increases the metal retention concentration of Zr(IV) in the organic phase.

Photocatalysis has been regarded as one of the effective methods of removing U(VI) from radioactive wastewater in recent years, due to the benefits of being environmentally friendly and efficient. In this work, a Pt cluster modified carbon nitride photocatalyst (Pt-CN) was synthesized in zinc chloride molten salt. The photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, IR, XPS, UV–vis, PL and EIS. The result demonstrated that the doping of Pt makes Pt-CN show higher electronic conductivity and better charge separation and migration, leading to an enhanced photocatalytic activity and faster kinetics compared with bulk graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ). Moreover, for uranium contained solution photocatalytic treatment, Pt-CN reached 94.6 % removal efficiency after 300 min of illumination with Xe light, and the kinetics improved by a factor of three compared to that of g-C 3 N 4 . Furthermore, the good reusability and photostability of the Pt-CN was confirmed as the removal efficiency remained at 83.7 % even after being recycled and reused five times. The photocatalytic reaction product was characterized as (UO 2 )O 2 ·2 H 2 O, and the mechanism was deduced as uranium species reacting with H 2 O 2 generated by light illumination in an open system. This molten salt one-step synthesis and Pt doping method and the performance of U(VI) extraction in air showed a promising potential for the application of Pt-CN for U(VI) extraction and removal from water.

Magnetic Fe/Zn layered double oxide decorated carbon nanotubes (M-Fe/Zn-LDO@CNTs) composites were synthesized via a hydrothermal method with further calcination treatment. The fabricated M-Fe/Zn-LDO@CNTs were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV–vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy and then applied for U(VI) elimination under diversiform experimental conditions, such as pH, temperature, ionic strength, contact time, and coexisting ions. The experimental results demonstrated that the U(VI) adsorption performance of M-Fe/Zn-LDO@CNTs was much higher than bare CNTs. The thermodynamic parameters revealed that U(VI) adsorption on M-Fe/Zn-LDO@CNTs was endothermic and spontaneous. More importantly, the adsorption performance of U(VI) on M-Fe/Zn-LDO@CNTs was still higher than ∼89% after five cycles. Furthermore, ∼95.9% of 241Am(III) could be removed by M-Fe/Zn-LDO@CNTs from solution at pH = 8.0, which confirmed that M-Fe/Zn-LDO@CNTs was an excellent material for efficient removal of long-lived lanthanides and actinides from environmental aqueous solutions in radionuclides’ pollution remediation.
